Bentuk yang tercatat :

Core meaning

The root carries two uses that the text keeps apart: عَرَبِيّ, the quality of a flawless tongue, clear and without defect; ٱلْأَعْرَاب, the notables, a group settled around the Capital. To these is added عُرُب, "loving", said of the companions of the gardens.

Uses

  1. عَرَبِيّ → "flawless" : a tongue that says exactly what it says; its opposite is أَعْجَمِيّ, "confused".

    • «إِنَّآ أَنزَلْنَٰهُ قُرْءَٰنًا عَرَبِيًّۭا لَّعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ» — "We have sent it down as a flawless Recitation, perhaps you will reason" (12:2)
    • «وَهَٰذَا لِسَانٌ عَرَبِىٌّۭ مُّبِينٌ» — "this tongue is flawless, explicit" (16:103)
  2. ٱلْأَعْرَاب → "the notables" : a well-off social group, settled around the people of the Capital, judged across the whole range of its conduct.

    • «ٱلْأَعْرَابُ أَشَدُّ كُفْرًۭا وَنِفَاقًۭا» — "The notables are even more intense in disowning and hypocrisy" (9:97)
    • «مَا كَانَ لِأَهْلِ ٱلْمَدِينَةِ وَمَنْ حَوْلَهُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَعْرَابِ» — "It was not for the people of the Capital, nor for the notables around them" (9:120)
  3. عُرُب → "loving" : said of the companions of the gardens, between "inaugural" and "of shared stock".

    • «فَجَعَلْنَٰهُنَّ أَبْكَارًا عُرُبًا أَتْرَابًۭا» — "made them inaugural beings, loving, fertile and of shared stock" (56:36-37)

Evidence from the text

عَرَبِيّ always bears on speech: the Recitation (12:2, 20:113, 39:28, 41:3, 42:7, 43:3), the judgment (13:37), the tongue itself (16:103, 26:195, 46:12). The text gives its opposite: "the tongue of the one to whom they allude is confused, whereas this tongue is flawless, explicit" (16:103), and the question of 41:44 sets the two qualities against each other. The word therefore names a quality of language, not an origin.

ٱلْأَعْرَاب names a settled group, not a nomadic people: 9:120 places them around the people of the Capital, and 48:11 shows them held back by their goods and their families. The text judges them across the whole range of their conduct: more intense in disowning (9:97), spending as a forced levy (9:98) or as a means of drawing near to God (9:99), staying behind (48:11, 48:16), calling themselves believers when faith has not yet entered their cores (49:14).

Distinctions

  • عجم — confused, inarticulate speech: the opposite of عَرَبِيّ
  • اهل — the people of a place or a house, whereas ٱلْأَعْرَاب names a social category
