Core meaning
Proper noun. The text reads it from ٱلْيَمّ, "the deep": the one whose destiny passes through the deep, from his birth to the ruin of his oppressor. The translation writes the name alone: "Moussa".
Uses
مُوسَىٰ → "Moussa" : the messenger sent to Fir'awn and to the sons of Israel.
- «وَكَلَّمَ ٱللَّهُ مُوسَىٰ تَكْلِيمًۭا» — "and God spoke to Moussa with a word" (4:164)
يَٰمُوسَىٰ → "O Moussa", "Moussa" : the call addressed to him, by God, by his people or by his adversaries; in sura 20, the translation writes "Moussa" without "O".
- «يَٰمُوسَىٰٓ إِنِّى ٱصْطَفَيْتُكَ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ بِرِسَٰلَٰتِى وَبِكَلَٰمِى» — "O Moussa! I have chosen you among mankind for My messages and for My word" (7:144)
قَوْمِ مُوسَىٰ, ءَالُ مُوسَىٰ, أُمِّ مُوسَىٰ → "the people of Moussa", "the clan of Moussa", "Moussa's mother" : his own, designated by his name.
كِتَٰبُ مُوسَىٰ → "the Scripture of Moussa" : the Scripture given to him, designated by his name.
- «وَمِن قَبْلِهِۦ كِتَٰبُ مُوسَىٰٓ إِمَامًۭا وَرَحْمَةً» — "And before him, the Scripture of Moussa, as a reference and a benevolence" (11:17)
Evidence from the text
The eight uses of ٱلْيَمّ in the whole text concern Moussa, without exception. The deep receives the child: "Hurl him into the coffer, then hurl him into the deep" (20:39; also 28:7). The deep swallows Fir'awn and his armies (7:136, 20:78, 28:40, 51:40). The deep finally receives the fabricated deity: Moussa announces that it will be scattered into it (20:97). The deep thus frames his account, from the child it receives to the oppressor it swallows.
Distinctions
- عيسى — Issa is himself called a word (كَلِمَة, 3:45, 4:171); Moussa receives the word (كَلَّمَ, 4:164)
