Al-Muddaththir
The Cloaked One
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent.
O you who are covered in a cloak! Arise and warn,
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمُدَّثِّرُ قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ
and your Guardian, proclaim His greatness,
وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ
and your clothes, purify them,
وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ
and defilement, keep away from it,
وَٱلرُّجْزَ فَٱهْجُرْ
and do not hold over others what you grant, deeming it abundant,
وَلَا تَمْنُن تَسْتَكْثِرُ
and for your Guardian, be patient.
وَلِرَبِّكَ فَٱصْبِرْ
Then, when the trumpet is sounded, that Day will be a difficult day, not easy for the disowners.
فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِى ٱلنَّاقُورِ فَذَٰلِكَ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ يَوْمٌ عَسِيرٌ عَلَى ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ غَيْرُ يَسِيرٍۢ
Leave Me with the one I created alone, and made for him extensive goods, and sons present with him, and smoothed everything for him amply — then he covets that I should give more. By no means!
ذَرْنِى وَمَنْ خَلَقْتُ وَحِيدًۭا وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُۥ مَالًۭا مَّمْدُودًۭا وَبَنِينَ شُهُودًۭا وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمْهِيدًۭا ثُمَّ يَطْمَعُ أَنْ أَزِيدَ كَلَّآ
He has been obstinate toward Our signs.
إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِءَايَٰتِنَا عَنِيدًۭا
I will crush him with a steep ascent.
سَأُرْهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا
He thought and determined. So may he perish, how he determined! Again, may he perish, how he determined! Then he looked; then he frowned and scowled; then he turned back and grew proud, and said, "This is nothing but illusion passed down; this is nothing but the saying of a human."
إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ فَقُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ ثُمَّ نَظَرَ ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ وَٱسْتَكْبَرَ فَقَالَ إِنْ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحْرٌۭ يُؤْثَرُ إِنْ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا قَوْلُ ٱلْبَشَرِ
I will make him burn in Saqar.
سَأُصْلِيهِ سَقَرَ
And what will give you an idea of what Saqar is?
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ
It leaves nothing and spares nothing,
لَا تُبْقِى وَلَا تَذَرُ
visibly altering humans.
لَوَّاحَةٌۭ لِّلْبَشَرِ
Over it, nineteen.
عَلَيْهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ
And We have not made the companions of the Fire except Agents,
وَمَا جَعَلْنَآ أَصْحَٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَٰٓئِكَةًۭ
and We have not made their number except as a trial for those who disown — that those given the Scripture may be certain, and those who believe may increase in faith, and those given the Scripture and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose cores is a sickness and the disowners may say, "What did God intend by this example?"
وَمَا جَعَلْنَا عِدَّتَهُمْ إِلَّا فِتْنَةًۭ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ وَيَزْدَادَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِيمَٰنًۭا وَلَا يَرْتَابَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَلِيَقُولَ ٱلَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌۭ وَٱلْكَٰفِرُونَ مَاذَآ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَٰذَا مَثَلًۭا
Thus does God send astray whom He wills and guide whom He wills.
كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَهْدِى مَن يَشَآءُ
And none knows the armies of your Guardian except Him.
وَمَا يَعْلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَ
And it is nothing but a reminder to humans.
وَمَا هِىَ إِلَّا ذِكْرَىٰ لِلْبَشَرِ
By no means! By the moon, and the night as it declines, and the morning as it shines forth — surely, it is one of the greatest, a warning to humans, to whoever among you wills to advance or to remain behind.
كَلَّا وَٱلْقَمَرِ وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذْ أَدْبَرَ وَٱلصُّبْحِ إِذَآ أَسْفَرَ إِنَّهَا لَإِحْدَى ٱلْكُبَرِ نَذِيرًۭا لِّلْبَشَرِ لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوْ يَتَأَخَّرَ
Every Self is a pledge for what it has earned, except the companions of the right,
كُلُّ نَفْسٍۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ رَهِينَةٌ إِلَّآ أَصْحَٰبَ ٱلْيَمِينِ
in gardens, they will ask one another about the severed: "What has led you into Saqar?"
فِى جَنَّٰتٍۢ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ عَنِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِى سَقَرَ
They will say, "We were not of those who made the Contact, nor did we use to feed the destitute, and we used to immerse ourselves with those who immersed themselves, and we used to deny the Day of the Due, until certainty came to us."
قَالُوا۟ لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ وَلَمْ نَكُ نُطْعِمُ ٱلْمِسْكِينَ وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ ٱلْخَآئِضِينَ وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ حَتَّىٰٓ أَتَىٰنَا ٱلْيَقِينُ
So the intercession of the intercessors will not benefit them.
فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمْ شَفَٰعَةُ ٱلشَّٰفِعِينَ
So what is with them that they turn away from the reminder, as if they were terrified donkeys, fleeing from a lion?
فَمَا لَهُمْ عَنِ ٱلتَّذْكِرَةِ مُعْرِضِينَ كَأَنَّهُمْ حُمُرٌۭ مُّسْتَنفِرَةٌۭ فَرَّتْ مِن قَسْوَرَةٍۭ
Rather, every person among them wants to be given chronicles deployed.
بَلْ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ ٱمْرِئٍۢ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُؤْتَىٰ صُحُفًۭا مُّنَشَّرَةًۭ
By no means! But they do not fear the last life.
كَلَّا بَل لَّا يَخَافُونَ ٱلْءَاخِرَةَ
By no means! This is a reminder;
كَلَّآ إِنَّهُۥ تَذْكِرَةٌۭ
so whoever wants may remember it.
فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ
And they will not remember it unless God wills.
وَمَا يَذْكُرُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ
He is worthy that one guard oneself before Him, and He is worthy to forgive.
هُوَ أَهْلُ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ وَأَهْلُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ
