Al-Ahzab

O Informant, guard yourself toward God,

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِىُّ ٱتَّقِ ٱللَّهَ

and do not defer to those who disown nor to the hypocrites.

وَلَا تُطِعِ ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ وَٱلْمُنَٰفِقِينَ

And follow what is revealed to you from your Guardian.

وَٱتَّبِعْ مَا يُوحَىٰٓ إِلَيْكَ مِن رَّبِّكَ

And entrust yourself to God.

وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ

God has not assigned to any man two cores within his breast.

مَّا جَعَلَ ٱللَّهُ لِرَجُلٍۢ مِّن قَلْبَيْنِ فِى جَوْفِهِۦ

Nor has He made your wives — those to whom you present the back — your mothers,

وَمَا جَعَلَ أَزْوَٰجَكُمُ ٱلَّٰٓـِٔى تُظَٰهِرُونَ مِنْهُنَّ أُمَّهَٰتِكُمْ

nor has He made your adopted sons your sons.

وَمَا جَعَلَ أَدْعِيَآءَكُمْ أَبْنَآءَكُمْ

That is your saying with your mouths;

ذَٰلِكُمْ قَوْلُكُم بِأَفْوَٰهِكُمْ

Call them by their fathers' names: that is more equitable with God.

ٱدْعُوهُمْ لِءَابَآئِهِمْ هُوَ أَقْسَطُ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ

And if you do not know their fathers, then they are your brothers in the Law, and your allies.

فَإِن لَّمْ تَعْلَمُوٓا۟ ءَابَآءَهُمْ فَإِخْوَٰنُكُمْ فِى ٱلدِّينِ وَمَوَٰلِيكُمْ

And no blame upon you in what you may have done by mistake,

وَلَيْسَ عَلَيْكُمْ جُنَاحٌۭ فِيمَآ أَخْطَأْتُم بِهِۦ

but rather in what your cores have premeditated.

وَلَٰكِن مَّا تَعَمَّدَتْ قُلُوبُكُمْ

The Informant is closer to the believers than they are to themselves,

ٱلنَّبِىُّ أَوْلَىٰ بِٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْ أَنفُسِهِمْ

and his wives are their mothers.

وَأَزْوَٰجُهُۥٓ أُمَّهَٰتُهُمْ

And those bound by kinship are closer to one another under God's Code than the believers and the emigrants — except that you do what is recognized toward your allies.

وَأُو۟لُوا۟ ٱلْأَرْحَامِ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلَىٰ بِبَعْضٍۢ فِى كِتَٰبِ ٱللَّهِ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُهَٰجِرِينَ إِلَّآ أَن تَفْعَلُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰٓ أَوْلِيَآئِكُم مَّعْرُوفًۭا

and We took from them a solemn and firm engagement, so that He might question the veracious about their veracity;

وَأَخَذْنَا مِنْهُم مِّيثَٰقًا غَلِيظًۭا لِّيَسْـَٔلَ ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ عَن صِدْقِهِمْ

O you who have believed! Remember God's blessing upon you, when armies came against you, and We sent upon them a wind and armies you did not see.

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱذْكُرُوا۟ نِعْمَةَ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ إِذْ جَآءَتْكُمْ جُنُودٌۭ فَأَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ رِيحًۭا وَجُنُودًۭا لَّمْ تَرَوْهَا

When they came upon you from above you and from below you,

إِذْ جَآءُوكُم مِّن فَوْقِكُمْ وَمِنْ أَسْفَلَ مِنكُمْ

and when a group among them said, "O people of Yathrib, there is no place for you; return,"

وَإِذْ قَالَت طَّآئِفَةٌۭ مِّنْهُمْ يَٰٓأَهْلَ يَثْرِبَ لَا مُقَامَ لَكُمْ فَٱرْجِعُوا۟

and a fraction among them was asking the Informant's leave, saying, "Our houses indeed lack privacy" — when they did not:

وَيَسْتَـْٔذِنُ فَرِيقٌۭ مِّنْهُمُ ٱلنَّبِىَّ يَقُولُونَ إِنَّ بُيُوتَنَا عَوْرَةٌۭ وَمَا هِىَ بِعَوْرَةٍ

And they had certainly made a pact with God before, not to turn their backs;

وَلَقَدْ كَانُوا۟ عَٰهَدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مِن قَبْلُ لَا يُوَلُّونَ ٱلْأَدْبَٰرَ

Say, "Flight will not benefit you if you flee from death or killing,

قُل لَّن يَنفَعَكُمُ ٱلْفِرَارُ إِن فَرَرْتُم مِّنَ ٱلْمَوْتِ أَوِ ٱلْقَتْلِ

Say, "Who, then, could safeguard you from God, should He intend for you evil, or intend for you benevolence?"

قُلْ مَن ذَا ٱلَّذِى يَعْصِمُكُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ إِنْ أَرَادَ بِكُمْ سُوٓءًا أَوْ أَرَادَ بِكُمْ رَحْمَةًۭ

God will surely distinguish those among you who obstruct, and those who say to their brothers, "Come to us," and who come to the fight only a little, being greedy toward you.

قَدْ يَعْلَمُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمُعَوِّقِينَ مِنكُمْ وَٱلْقَآئِلِينَ لِإِخْوَٰنِهِمْ هَلُمَّ إِلَيْنَا وَلَا يَأْتُونَ ٱلْبَأْسَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا أَشِحَّةً عَلَيْكُمْ

Then, when fear comes, you see them looking at you, their eyes rolling like those of one whom death makes swoon.

فَإِذَا جَآءَ ٱلْخَوْفُ رَأَيْتَهُمْ يَنظُرُونَ إِلَيْكَ تَدُورُ أَعْيُنُهُمْ كَٱلَّذِى يُغْشَىٰ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ ٱلْمَوْتِ

Then, when the fear departs, they assail you with sharp tongues, greedy for any good.

فَإِذَا ذَهَبَ ٱلْخَوْفُ سَلَقُوكُم بِأَلْسِنَةٍ حِدَادٍ أَشِحَّةً عَلَى ٱلْخَيْرِ

Those have not believed, so God has voided their works,

أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ لَمْ يُؤْمِنُوا۟ فَأَحْبَطَ ٱللَّهُ أَعْمَٰلَهُمْ

They think the parties have not gone;

يَحْسَبُونَ ٱلْأَحْزَابَ لَمْ يَذْهَبُوا۟

and were the parties to come, they would wish they had been out in the countryside among the notables,

وَإِن يَأْتِ ٱلْأَحْزَابُ يَوَدُّوا۟ لَوْ أَنَّهُم بَادُونَ فِى ٱلْأَعْرَابِ

And when the believers saw the parties, they said, "This is what God and His messenger promised us, and God and His messenger spoke truly,"

وَلَمَّا رَءَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ٱلْأَحْزَابَ قَالُوا۟ هَٰذَا مَا وَعَدَنَا ٱللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥ وَصَدَقَ ٱللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥ

Among the believers are men who have been true to the pact they made with God:

مِّنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ رِجَالٌۭ صَدَقُوا۟ مَا عَٰهَدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ عَلَيْهِ

and they have not changed in the least — so that God may recompense the veracious for their veracity, and punish the hypocrites, if He wills, or turn toward them with clemency.

وَمَا بَدَّلُوا۟ تَبْدِيلًۭا لِّيَجْزِىَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ بِصِدْقِهِمْ وَيُعَذِّبَ ٱلْمُنَٰفِقِينَ إِن شَآءَ أَوْ يَتُوبَ عَلَيْهِمْ

And God turned back those who disowned, in their rage, without any good accruing to them;

وَرَدَّ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِغَيْظِهِمْ لَمْ يَنَالُوا۟ خَيْرًۭا

and God spared the believers the fight.

وَكَفَى ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ٱلْقِتَالَ

And He brought down from their strongholds those, among the People of the Scripture, who had supported them, and hurled terror into their cores:

وَأَنزَلَ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَٰهَرُوهُم مِّنْ أَهْلِ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ مِن صَيَاصِيهِمْ وَقَذَفَ فِى قُلُوبِهِمُ ٱلرُّعْبَ

and He made you inherit their land, their abodes, and their goods, and a land you had not trodden.

وَأَوْرَثَكُمْ أَرْضَهُمْ وَدِيَٰرَهُمْ وَأَمْوَٰلَهُمْ وَأَرْضًۭا لَّمْ تَطَـُٔوهَا

O women of the Informant, whoever among you commits a manifest indecency, We would double the punishment for her, twice over;

يَٰنِسَآءَ ٱلنَّبِىِّ مَن يَأْتِ مِنكُنَّ بِفَٰحِشَةٍۢ مُّبَيِّنَةٍۢ يُضَٰعَفْ لَهَا ٱلْعَذَابُ ضِعْفَيْنِ

So do not let the tone of your saying be yielding, lest he in whose core is a sickness should covet; and speak a recognized saying, and remain in your houses,

فَلَا تَخْضَعْنَ بِٱلْقَوْلِ فَيَطْمَعَ ٱلَّذِى فِى قَلْبِهِۦ مَرَضٌۭ وَقُلْنَ قَوْلًۭا مَّعْرُوفًۭا وَقَرْنَ فِى بُيُوتِكُنَّ

and do not flaunt yourselves as was flaunted in the former ignorance.

وَلَا تَبَرَّجْنَ تَبَرُّجَ ٱلْجَٰهِلِيَّةِ ٱلْأُولَىٰ

And maintain the Contact, and give pure liberality,

وَأَقِمْنَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتِينَ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ

and defer to God and His messenger.

وَأَطِعْنَ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥٓ

And remember what is recited in your houses of God's signs and wisdom.

وَٱذْكُرْنَ مَا يُتْلَىٰ فِى بُيُوتِكُنَّ مِنْ ءَايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱلْحِكْمَةِ

And it is not for any believing man or believing woman, when God and His messenger have decided a matter, to have the option in their own affair.

وَمَا كَانَ لِمُؤْمِنٍۢ وَلَا مُؤْمِنَةٍ إِذَا قَضَى ٱللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥٓ أَمْرًا أَن يَكُونَ لَهُمُ ٱلْخِيَرَةُ مِنْ أَمْرِهِمْ

And when you said to the one God had favored and you had favored, "Retain your wife and guard yourself toward God," while hiding within yourself what God was going to make appear, and dreading mankind, when God is more deserving that you dread Him.

وَإِذْ تَقُولُ لِلَّذِىٓ أَنْعَمَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَأَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِ أَمْسِكْ عَلَيْكَ زَوْجَكَ وَٱتَّقِ ٱللَّهَ وَتُخْفِى فِى نَفْسِكَ مَا ٱللَّهُ مُبْدِيهِ وَتَخْشَى ٱلنَّاسَ وَٱللَّهُ أَحَقُّ أَن تَخْشَىٰهُ

Then when Zayd had ended all ties with her, We gave her to you in marriage, so that there would be no discomfort for the believers concerning the wives of their adopted sons, once they have ended all ties with them.

فَلَمَّا قَضَىٰ زَيْدٌۭ مِّنْهَا وَطَرًۭا زَوَّجْنَٰكَهَا لِكَىْ لَا يَكُونَ عَلَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ حَرَجٌۭ فِىٓ أَزْوَٰجِ أَدْعِيَآئِهِمْ إِذَا قَضَوْا۟ مِنْهُنَّ وَطَرًۭا

There is no discomfort for the Informant in what God has fixed for him —

مَّا كَانَ عَلَى ٱلنَّبِىِّ مِنْ حَرَجٍۢ فِيمَا فَرَضَ ٱللَّهُ لَهُۥ

such is God's norm with those who passed before.

سُنَّةَ ٱللَّهِ فِى ٱلَّذِينَ خَلَوْا۟ مِن قَبْلُ

Those who convey God's messages, and dread Him, and dread no one but God —

ٱلَّذِينَ يُبَلِّغُونَ رِسَٰلَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ وَيَخْشَوْنَهُۥ وَلَا يَخْشَوْنَ أَحَدًا إِلَّا ٱللَّهَ

Muhammad is not the father of any of your men,

مَّا كَانَ مُحَمَّدٌ أَبَآ أَحَدٍۢ مِّن رِّجَالِكُمْ

but rather the messenger of God and the seal of the informants.

وَلَٰكِن رَّسُولَ ٱللَّهِ وَخَاتَمَ ٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ

It is He who is in contact with you, He and His Agents, so as to bring you out of the darknesses into the light;

هُوَ ٱلَّذِى يُصَلِّى عَلَيْكُمْ وَمَلَٰٓئِكَتُهُۥ لِيُخْرِجَكُم مِّنَ ٱلظُّلُمَٰتِ إِلَى ٱلنُّورِ

Their greeting, the day they meet Him, will be, "Peace."

تَحِيَّتُهُمْ يَوْمَ يَلْقَوْنَهُۥ سَلَٰمٌۭ

And do not defer to those who disown nor to the hypocrites,

وَلَا تُطِعِ ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ وَٱلْمُنَٰفِقِينَ

and disregard their nuisance,

وَدَعْ أَذَىٰهُمْ

and entrust yourself to God.

وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ

O you who have believed! When you marry believing women and then repudiate them before you have touched them, you have no waiting period against them for you to number.

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِذَا نَكَحْتُمُ ٱلْمُؤْمِنَٰتِ ثُمَّ طَلَّقْتُمُوهُنَّ مِن قَبْلِ أَن تَمَسُّوهُنَّ فَمَا لَكُمْ عَلَيْهِنَّ مِنْ عِدَّةٍۢ تَعْتَدُّونَهَا

O Informant, We have permitted to you your wives to whom you have given their rewards, she who is bound to you by oath among what God has restored to you, and the daughters of your paternal uncle, the daughters of your paternal aunts, the daughters of your maternal uncle, and the daughters of your maternal aunts who emigrated with you, and any believing woman if she bestows herself on the Informant — provided the Informant wishes to marry her:

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِىُّ إِنَّآ أَحْلَلْنَا لَكَ أَزْوَٰجَكَ ٱلَّٰتِىٓ ءَاتَيْتَ أُجُورَهُنَّ وَمَا مَلَكَتْ يَمِينُكَ مِمَّآ أَفَآءَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْكَ وَبَنَاتِ عَمِّكَ وَبَنَاتِ عَمَّٰتِكَ وَبَنَاتِ خَالِكَ وَبَنَاتِ خَٰلَٰتِكَ ٱلَّٰتِى هَاجَرْنَ مَعَكَ وَٱمْرَأَةًۭ مُّؤْمِنَةً إِن وَهَبَتْ نَفْسَهَا لِلنَّبِىِّ إِنْ أَرَادَ ٱلنَّبِىُّ أَن يَسْتَنكِحَهَا

exclusively for you, to the exclusion of the believers.

خَالِصَةًۭ لَّكَ مِن دُونِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

We certainly know what We have fixed for them concerning their wives and those bound to them by oath, so that there may be no discomfort for you;

قَدْ عَلِمْنَا مَا فَرَضْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ فِىٓ أَزْوَٰجِهِمْ وَمَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَٰنُهُمْ لِكَيْلَا يَكُونَ عَلَيْكَ حَرَجٌۭ

You may postpone whom you will of them, and take to yourself whom you will;

تُرْجِى مَن تَشَآءُ مِنْهُنَّ وَتُـْٔوِىٓ إِلَيْكَ مَن تَشَآءُ

and whomever you seek of those you had set aside, no blame upon you.

وَمَنِ ٱبْتَغَيْتَ مِمَّنْ عَزَلْتَ فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْكَ

That is nearer so that their gaze may rest, and they not grieve, and they be satisfied, all of them, with what you give them.

ذَٰلِكَ أَدْنَىٰٓ أَن تَقَرَّ أَعْيُنُهُنَّ وَلَا يَحْزَنَّ وَيَرْضَيْنَ بِمَآ ءَاتَيْتَهُنَّ كُلُّهُنَّ

And God knows what is in your cores;

وَٱللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ مَا فِى قُلُوبِكُمْ

Women are not permitted to you after this, nor to exchange them for other wives, even were their beauty to dazzle you — except she who is bound to you by oath.

لَّا يَحِلُّ لَكَ ٱلنِّسَآءُ مِنۢ بَعْدُ وَلَآ أَن تَبَدَّلَ بِهِنَّ مِنْ أَزْوَٰجٍۢ وَلَوْ أَعْجَبَكَ حُسْنُهُنَّ إِلَّا مَا مَلَكَتْ يَمِينُكَ

O you who have believed! Do not enter the houses of the Informant unless permission is given you for food, without awaiting its readiness;

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَدْخُلُوا۟ بُيُوتَ ٱلنَّبِىِّ إِلَّآ أَن يُؤْذَنَ لَكُمْ إِلَىٰ طَعَامٍ غَيْرَ نَٰظِرِينَ إِنَىٰهُ

but when you are invited, enter; and when you have fed, deploy, without tarrying for discourse.

وَلَٰكِنْ إِذَا دُعِيتُمْ فَٱدْخُلُوا۟ فَإِذَا طَعِمْتُمْ فَٱنتَشِرُوا۟ وَلَا مُسْتَـْٔنِسِينَ لِحَدِيثٍ

That indeed used to trouble the Informant, though he felt shy toward you,

إِنَّ ذَٰلِكُمْ كَانَ يُؤْذِى ٱلنَّبِىَّ فَيَسْتَحْىِۦ مِنكُمْ

whereas God is not shy of the truth.

وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَسْتَحْىِۦ مِنَ ٱلْحَقِّ

And when you ask them for an item, ask them from behind a veil:

وَإِذَا سَأَلْتُمُوهُنَّ مَتَٰعًۭا فَسْـَٔلُوهُنَّ مِن وَرَآءِ حِجَابٍۢ

that is cleaner for your cores and their cores.

ذَٰلِكُمْ أَطْهَرُ لِقُلُوبِكُمْ وَقُلُوبِهِنَّ

And it is not for you to trouble the messenger of God, nor to marry his wives after him, ever;

وَمَا كَانَ لَكُمْ أَن تُؤْذُوا۟ رَسُولَ ٱللَّهِ وَلَآ أَن تَنكِحُوٓا۟ أَزْوَٰجَهُۥ مِنۢ بَعْدِهِۦٓ أَبَدًا

No blame upon them concerning their fathers, nor their sons, nor their brothers, nor their brothers' sons, nor their sisters' sons, nor the women of their circle, nor those bound to them by oath.

لَّا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْهِنَّ فِىٓ ءَابَآئِهِنَّ وَلَآ أَبْنَآئِهِنَّ وَلَآ إِخْوَٰنِهِنَّ وَلَآ أَبْنَآءِ إِخْوَٰنِهِنَّ وَلَآ أَبْنَآءِ أَخَوَٰتِهِنَّ وَلَا نِسَآئِهِنَّ وَلَا مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَٰنُهُنَّ

And guard yourselves toward God:

وَٱتَّقِينَ ٱللَّهَ

God and His Agents are in constant contact with the Informant.

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ وَمَلَٰٓئِكَتَهُۥ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى ٱلنَّبِىِّ

O Informant, tell your wives, your daughters, and the women of the believers to draw over themselves part of their outer garments:

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِىُّ قُل لِّأَزْوَٰجِكَ وَبَنَاتِكَ وَنِسَآءِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يُدْنِينَ عَلَيْهِنَّ مِن جَلَٰبِيبِهِنَّ

that is nearer so that they will be recognized and not be troubled.

ذَٰلِكَ أَدْنَىٰٓ أَن يُعْرَفْنَ فَلَا يُؤْذَيْنَ

If the hypocrites, those in whose cores is a sickness, and the rumor-mongers in the Capital do not cease, We will surely unleash you against them; then they will not remain your neighbors there except a little, being cursed.

لَّئِن لَّمْ يَنتَهِ ٱلْمُنَٰفِقُونَ وَٱلَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌۭ وَٱلْمُرْجِفُونَ فِى ٱلْمَدِينَةِ لَنُغْرِيَنَّكَ بِهِمْ ثُمَّ لَا يُجَاوِرُونَكَ فِيهَآ إِلَّا قَلِيلًۭا مَّلْعُونِينَ

Such is God's norm with those who passed before,

سُنَّةَ ٱللَّهِ فِى ٱلَّذِينَ خَلَوْا۟ مِن قَبْلُ

Men ask you about the Hour.

يَسْـَٔلُكَ ٱلنَّاسُ عَنِ ٱلسَّاعَةِ

Say: "Knowledge of it is only with God,

قُلْ إِنَّمَا عِلْمُهَا عِندَ ٱللَّهِ

and what gives you an idea?

وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ

O you who have believed! Do not be like those who troubled Moussa; God made him quit of what they said,

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَكُونُوا۟ كَٱلَّذِينَ ءَاذَوْا۟ مُوسَىٰ فَبَرَّأَهُ ٱللَّهُ مِمَّا قَالُوا۟

O you who have believed! Guard yourselves toward God and speak a straight saying: He will make your deeds sound for you and forgive you your offenses.

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَقُولُوا۟ قَوْلًۭا سَدِيدًۭا يُصْلِحْ لَكُمْ أَعْمَٰلَكُمْ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبَكُمْ

and the human being bore it: he was indeed a great wrongdoer, deeply ignorant — so that God may punish the hypocrites, men and women, and the associators, men and women, and that God turn with clemency toward the believing men and the believing women.

وَحَمَلَهَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ ظَلُومًۭا جَهُولًۭا لِّيُعَذِّبَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمُنَٰفِقِينَ وَٱلْمُنَٰفِقَٰتِ وَٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ وَٱلْمُشْرِكَٰتِ وَيَتُوبَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَٰتِ
