1 The sura and its neighbours 2 / 7

A root passes the baton from one sura to the next

Observation 3 examples 1 min

In runs of short suras, a root often relays the discourse from one sura to the next: the word that closes one scene returns, in another form, in the neighbouring scene. Following this relay means reading the run as a single discourse.

The root of food runs through three suras in a row. Sura 105 ends with the people without reason reduced "to the state of eaten husk" (105:5, مَّأْكُولٍۭ). Sura 106 recalls that the Guardian of the House "fed them against hunger" (106:4, أَطْعَمَهُم). Sura 107 denounces the one who "does not urge the feeding of the destitute" (107:3, طَعَامِ). From what was eaten, to food given, then to food refused: a single chain.

The root of abundance links two suras further apart: "Rivalry in accumulation has distracted you" (102:1, ٱلتَّكَاثُرُ); "We have granted you the Abundance" (108:1, ٱلْكَوْثَرَ). The same root names the accumulation that distracts and the abundance that is given.

This relay refines the principle of reading neighbours (“Reading a sura with its neighbours”): comparing themes is not enough; one must follow the roots.
