A Fine Paragon in Ibrahim

Sura 60 · 13 verses

In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent.

O you who have believed! Do not take My enemy and your enemy as allies,

60:1

offering them affection, while they have disowned the truth that has come to you,

driving out the messenger and yourselves, because you believe in God, your Guardian.

60:1

If you went forth to strive in My way and seek My pleasure, you confide your affection to them secretly, while I know best what you have hidden and what you have disclosed.

And whoever among you does this has strayed from the straight way.

If they surprise you, they will be enemies to you, and stretch out against you their hands and their tongues with evil,

60:2

and they would like you to disown.

Neither your kinship nor your children will benefit you,

60:3

on the Day of Appearance He will separate between you.

And God is All-Seeing of what you do.

60:4

You have had a fine paragon in Ibrahim and those with him, when they said to their people: "We are indeed quit of you and of what you obey besides God; we disown you, and there has appeared between us and you enmity and hatred forever, until you believe in God alone" — except the saying of Ibrahim to his father: "I will surely ask forgiveness for you, and I possess nothing for you against God."

"Our Guardian, to You we entrust ourselves, and to You we have recourse, and to You is the destination.

60:5

Our Guardian, do not make us a trial for those who disown,

and forgive us, our Guardian.

You, indeed, are the All-Powerful, the Wise."

You have indeed had in them a fine paragon, for whoever hopes for God and the Last Day.

And whoever turns his back — indeed God is the Self-Sufficient, the Praiseworthy.

60:7

It may be that God will place affection between you and those you have held as enemies among them,

and God is Capable,

and God is Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.

60:8

God does not forbid you from being virtuous and equitable toward those who did not fight you concerning the Law and did not expel you from your abodes.

60:8

God indeed loves the equitable.

60:9

God only forbids you from taking as allies those who fought you concerning the Law, expelled you from your abodes, and supported your expulsion.

And whoever allies with them — those are the wrongdoers.

O you who have believed! When believing women come to you as emigrants, examine them.

God knows best their faith.

60:10

If you know them to be believers, do not return them to those who disown.

They are not permitted to them, nor are they permitted to them.

And give them what they have spent.

And no blame upon you for marrying them when you give them their rewards.

60:10

And do not hold to the ties of those women who disown.

And ask for what you have spent, and let them ask for what they have spent.

That is the judgment of God; He judges between you.

And God is All-Knowing, Wise.

60:11

And if you miss any of your wives, gone over to those who disown, and you then pay back in kind, then give those whose wives have gone the equivalent of what they had spent.

60:11

And guard yourselves toward God, in whom you believe.

60:12

O Informant! When believing women come to you to pledge allegiance to you that they will not associate anything with God, not steal, not commit fornication, not kill their children, not bring forth slander they have invented between their hands and feet, and not disobey you in what is recognized, accept their pledge and ask God's forgiveness for them.

God is indeed Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.

60:13

O you who have believed! Do not take as allies a people with whom God is angry, who have lost hope of the last life, just as those who disown have lost hope of the companions of the graves.
