Al-Fath

The Manifest Opening

In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent.

48:1–3

We have indeed opened for you a manifest opening, so that God may forgive you your past and future offenses, complete His blessing upon you, guide you along a straight path, and help you with a mighty help.

48:4

It is He who sent down tranquility into the cores of the believers, so that they might add faith to their faith.

And to God belong the armies of the heavens and the earth.

48:5–6

God is All-Knowing, Wise — so that He may admit the believing men and the believing women into gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally, and cover their bad deeds; that is, with God, an immense triumph — and so that He may punish the hypocrites, men and women, and the associators, men and women, who form an evil presumption about God.

Upon them, the cycle of misfortune.

God became angry with them, cursed them, and prepared Jahannam for them.

And what an evil destination!

And to God belong the armies of the heavens and the earth.

God is All-Powerful, Wise.

48:8–9

We have indeed sent you as a witness, a bearer of good tidings, and a warner, so that you may believe in God and His messenger, that you may champion him, that you may honor him, and that you may glorify God morning and evening.

Those who pledge allegiance to you are only pledging allegiance to God.

The hand of God is above their hands.

Whoever violates it violates it only to his own detriment.

48:10

And whoever is faithful to the pact he made with God, He will give him an immense reward.

48:11

The notables who stayed behind will say to you: "Our goods and our families kept us occupied; so ask forgiveness for us."

48:11

They say with their tongues what is not in their cores.

Say: "Who then possesses any power over you against God, if He wished to harm you or wished to benefit you?"

God is rather Intimately Acquainted with what you do.

48:12

You rather presumed that the messenger and the believers would never return to their own people, and this was embellished in your cores; you formed an evil presumption, and you were a blighted people.

48:13

And whoever does not believe in God and His messenger — We have indeed made ready for those who disown an inferno.

And to God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth.

He forgives whom He wills, and He punishes whom He wills.

And God is Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.

Those who stayed behind will say, when you set out to take spoils: "Let us follow you."

They want to change the word of God.

Say: "You will never follow us."

Thus has God said before.

They will then say: "No, you envy us."

They understood, in fact, only a little.

48:16

Say to those of the notables who stayed behind: "You will be called to a people of severe rigor; you will fight them, or they will become true to God alone."

If you defer, God will give you a fine reward.

But if you turn your backs, as you turned your backs before, He will punish you with a painful punishment.

48:17

There is no discomfort for the blind, nor discomfort for the lame, nor discomfort for the sick.

48:17

And whoever defers to God and His messenger, He will admit him into gardens beneath which rivers flow.

48:17

And whoever turns his back, He will punish him with a painful punishment.

God was certainly satisfied with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you beneath the tree; He knew what was in their cores, sent down tranquility upon them, and requited them with a near opening and abundant spoils that they will take.

God is All-Powerful, Wise.

God promised you abundant spoils that you would take; He hastened this one for you and held back the hands of men from you,

and so that it might be a sign for the believers, and that He might guide you along a straight path.

48:21

And another, which you had not yet attained: God has already encompassed it.

And God is capable of all things.

48:22

And had those who disown fought you, they would have turned their backs, then found neither protector nor help.

48:23

Such is God's norm, already past before.

48:23

And you will never find any change in God's norm.

48:24

It is He who held back their hands from you, and your hands from them, in the hollow of Makka, after having given you victory over them.

48:24

And God is All-Seeing of what you do.

48:25

It is they who disowned and barred you from the inviolable place of prostration, and barred the offering, detained, from reaching its place of delivery.

48:25

And had it not been for believing men and believing women whom you did not know, whom you might have trampled underfoot, so that an injury would have struck you because of them without your knowing — so that God might admit into His benevolence whom He wills.

48:25

Had they been separated, We would have punished those of them who disowned with a painful punishment.

48:26

When those who disowned placed in their cores fierce zeal, the zeal of the age of ignorance.

48:26

God then sent down His tranquility upon His messenger and upon the believers, and bound them to the word of guardedness, to which they had the most right and of which they were worthy.

And God is All-Knowing of all things.

God has certainly made the vision of His messenger come true, in truth: you will enter the inviolable place of prostration, if God wills, in security, your heads shaved or your hair cut short, without fear.

He knew what you did not know, and He appointed, before that, a near opening.

48:28

It is He who sent His messenger with the guidance and the Law of truth, so as to make it prevail over every law.

And God suffices as a witness.

48:29

Muhammad is the messenger of God.

48:29

And those who are with him are severe toward those who disown, benevolent among themselves.

You see them kneeling, prostrating, seeking favor from God and His pleasure.

Their mark is on their faces, the trace of prostration.

That is their example in the Tawrah.

48:29

And their example in the Injil is that of a seed that puts forth its shoot, strengthens it, and it thickens and stands straight upon its stalk, dazzling the sowers — so as to enrage through them those who disown.

God has promised those of them who believed and did sound deeds forgiveness and an immense reward.
