Al-Hijr

These are the signs of the Scripture, and of a clear Recitation.

تلك ءايت الكتب وقرءان مبين

Many a time, those who disown would like to have been true to God alone.

ربما يود الذين كفروا لو كانوا مسلمين

they will soon know.

فسوف يعلمون

We have not annihilated any city without it having had, concerning it, a known register.

وما اهلكنا من قرية الا ولها كتاب معلوم

No community precedes its term, nor delays it.

ما تسبق من امة اجلها وما يستخرون

And they said: "O you upon whom the Reminder has been sent down, you are surely deranged! Why do you not bring us the Agents, if you are among the veracious?"

وقالوا يايها الذي نزل عليه الذكر انك لمجنون لو ما تاتينا بالمليكة ان كنت من الصدقين

and then, they would be granted no reprieve.

وما كانوا اذا منظرين

and We are surely its preservers.

وانا له لحفظون

We have indeed sent messengers before you, among the factions of the ancients,

ولقد ارسلنا من قبلك في شيع الاولين

and no messenger ever came to them but they mocked him.

وما ياتيهم من رسول الا كانوا به يستهزءون

Thus We insert it into the cores of the severed: they do not believe in it, though the norm of the ancients has already passed.

كذلك نسلكه في قلوب المجرمين لا يومنون به وقد خلت سنة الاولين

And even if We opened for them a gate of the sky, through which they would stay ascending, they would say: "Our sight is only befuddled; we are rather a people abused by illusion."

ولو فتحنا عليهم بابا من السماء فظلوا فيه يعرجون لقالوا انما سكرت ابصرنا بل نحن قوم مسحورون

We have indeed placed in the sky constellations, and adorned them for those who look, and preserved them from every banished Diverter — except one who steals a furtive hearing, and is then pursued by a manifest blazing projectile.

ولقد جعلنا في السماء بروجا وزينها للنظرين وحفظنها من كل شيطن رجيم الا من استرق السمع فاتبعه شهاب مبين

as well as to those for whom you are not providers.

ومن لستم له برزقين

and We send it down only according to a known measure.

وما ننزله الا بقدر معلوم

And We sent the fecundating winds, and then sent down from the sky a water with which We gave you drink, and which you do not hold in reserve.

وارسلنا الريح لوقح فانزلنا من السماء ماء فاسقينكموه وما انتم له بخزنين

And it is surely We who give life and cause death, and it is We who are the heirs.

وانا لنحن نحي ونميت ونحن الورثون

We indeed know those among you who go first, and We indeed know those who lag behind.

ولقد علمنا المستقدمين منكم ولقد علمنا المستخرين

He is Wise, All-Knowing.

انه حكيم عليم

We have indeed created the human being from resonant clay, from molded mud,

ولقد خلقنا الانسن من صلصل من حما مسنون

and the Occulted, We had created them before, from a fire of torrid wind.

والجان خلقنه من قبل من نار السموم

And when your Guardian said to the Agents: "I am indeed going to create a human from resonant clay, from molded mud; when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My Influx, bow before him in prostration."

واذ قال ربك للمليكة اني خلق بشرا من صلصل من حما مسنون فاذا سويته ونفخت فيه من روحي فقعوا له سجدين

The Agents then prostrated, all together, except Iblis: he refused to be among those who prostrated.

فسجد المليكة كلهم اجمعون الا ابليس ابى ان يكون مع السجدين

He said: "O Iblis, what is with you, that you are not among those who prostrate?"

قال يابليس ما لك الا تكون مع السجدين

He said: "It is not for me to prostrate before a human You created from resonant clay, from molded mud."

قال لم اكن لاسجد لبشر خلقته من صلصل من حما مسنون

He said: "Get out of here, for you are now banished, and the curse will indeed weigh upon you until the Day of the Due."

قال فاخرج منها فانك رجيم وان عليك اللعنة الى يوم الدين

He said: "My Guardian, grant me then a delay until the day they are raised."

قال رب فانظرني الى يوم يبعثون

He said: "You are among those granted a delay, until the day of the known moment."

قال فانك من المنظرين الى يوم الوقت المعلوم

He said: "My Guardian, for having let me err, I shall surely embellish for them what is on earth, and I shall surely make them all err, except Your obedient ones among them who are refined."

قال رب بما اغويتني لازينن لهم في الارض ولاغوينهم اجمعين الا عبادك منهم المخلصين

He said: "This is a path incumbent upon Me, a straight path.

قال هذا صرط على مستقيم

Over My obedient ones, you indeed have no authority, except over whoever follows you among the errant."

ان عبادي ليس لك عليهم سلطن الا من اتبعك من الغاوين

to each gate belongs a determined part of them.

لكل باب منهم جزء مقسوم

Those who guarded themselves will indeed be in gardens and springs: "Enter therein in peace, in security."

ان المتقين في جنت وعيون ادخلوها بسلم ءامنين

brothers, upon couches, facing one another.

اخونا على سرر متقبلين

and they will never be expelled from it.

وما هم منها بمخرجين

Inform My obedient ones that it is I, the Most-Forgiving, the Benevolent, and that My punishment is the painful punishment.

نبي عبادي اني انا الغفور الرحيم وان عذابي هو العذاب الاليم

He said: "We are indeed trembling because of you."

قال انا منكم وجلون

They said: "Do not tremble: we bring you glad tidings of a knowledgeable boy."

قالوا لا توجل انا نبشرك بغلم عليم

He said: "Do you give me this glad tiding, when old age has touched me? Of what then do you give me tidings?"

قال ابشرتموني على ان مسني الكبر فبم تبشرون

They said: "We bring you this glad tiding in truth: so do not be among those who lose heart."

قالوا بشرنك بالحق فلا تكن من القنطين

He said: "And who loses heart regarding his Guardian's benevolence, except the astray?"

قال ومن يقنط من رحمة ربه الا الضالون

He said: "What then is your case, O envoys?"

قال فما خطبكم ايها المرسلون

They said: "We are sent to a severed people, except the clan of Lut.

قالوا انا ارسلنا الى قوم مجرمين الا ءال لوط

We shall surely save them all, except his wife: We have determined that she is indeed among those who linger behind."

انا لمنجوهم اجمعين الا امراته قدرنا انها لمن الغبرين

And when the envoys came to the clan of Lut, he said: "You are people I do not recognize."

فلما جاء ءال لوط المرسلون قال انكم قوم منكرون

They said: "We bring you rather that about which they used to contend. We have come to you with the truth, and we are surely veracious.

قالوا بل جينك بما كانوا فيه يمترون واتينك بالحق وانا لصدقون

So depart with your family, at a time of the night, and follow behind them, and let none of you turn around, and go where you are commanded."

فاسر باهلك بقطع من اليل واتبع ادبرهم ولا يلتفت منكم احد وامضوا حيث تومرون

And We decreed to him this command: the last remnant of those people would be cut off, by morning.

وقضينا اليه ذلك الامر ان دابر هولاء مقطوع مصبحين

And the people of the Capital came, exulting.

وجاء اهل المدينة يستبشرون

He said: "These are my guests: do not dishonor me,

قال ان هولاء ضيفي فلا تفضحون

and guard yourselves toward God, and do not disgrace me."

واتقوا الله ولا تخزون

They said: "Did we not forbid you anyone at all?"

قالوا اولم ننهك عن العلمين

He said: "Here are my daughters, if you must act."

قال هولاء بناتي ان كنتم فعلين

By your life, they were surely going about blindly in their intoxication.

لعمرك انهم لفي سكرتهم يعمهون

The Cry then seized them at daybreak, and We made its top its bottom, and rained upon them stones of formed clay.

فاخذتهم الصيحة مشرقين فجعلنا عليها سافلها وامطرنا عليهم حجارة من سجيل

There are surely in that signs for those who can read the marks.

ان في ذلك لءايت للمتوسمين

And it is surely upon a way that endures.

وانها لبسبيل مقيم

There is surely in that a sign for the believers.

ان في ذلك لءاية للمومنين

And the companions of the Thicket were indeed wrongdoers,

وان كان اصحب الايكة لظلمين

and both are surely upon a manifest reference.

وانهما لبامام مبين

The companions of al-Hijr indeed denied the envoys,

ولقد كذب اصحب الحجر المرسلين

And We gave them Our signs, but they turned away from them.

وءاتينهم ءايتنا فكانوا عنها معرضين

And they carved, in the mountains, houses, in complete security.

وكانوا ينحتون من الجبال بيوتا ءامنين

The Cry then seized them in the morning,

فاخذتهم الصيحة مصبحين

and what they had earned availed them nothing.

فما اغنى عنهم ما كانوا يكسبون

so turn the page, with a gracious gesture.

فاصفح الصفح الجميل

Your Guardian is indeed the Great Creator, the All-Knowing.

ان ربك هو الخلق العليم

We have indeed given you seven of the couplets, and the immense Recitation.

ولقد ءاتينك سبعا من المثاني والقرءان العظيم

and lower your wing for the believers.

واخفض جناحك للمومنين

And say: "I am, indeed, the clear warner" — as We sent it down upon those who divided it among themselves, those who made of this Recitation disparate fragments.

وقل اني انا النذير المبين كما انزلنا على المقتسمين الذين جعلوا القرءان عضين

By your Guardian, We shall surely question them all about what they used to do.

فوربك لنسلنهم اجمعين عما كانوا يعملون

and turn away from those who associate.

واعرض عن المشركين

they will soon know.

فسوف يعلمون

We will indeed know that your chest tightens from what they say:

ولقد نعلم انك يضيق صدرك بما يقولون

so glorify, with praise, your Guardian, and be among those who prostrate,

فسبح بحمد ربك وكن من السجدين

and obey your Guardian until certainty comes to you.

واعبد ربك حتى ياتيك اليقين
