The Rope of God

Sura 3 · 200 verses

In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent.

3:1

Alif. Lam. Mim.

الم

3:2

God, there is no deity but Him,

3:3

the Living, the Self-Subsisting. He sent down upon you the Scripture, in truth, confirming what precedes it,

3:4

and He sent down, before, the Tawrah and the Injil, a guidance for mankind, and He sent down the Discernment.

Indeed, those who have disowned the signs of God will have a severe punishment.

God is All-Powerful, possessor of vengeance.

Indeed, nothing is hidden from God, neither on earth nor in the sky.

It is He who gives you form in the wombs as He wills.

There is no deity but Him,

the All-Powerful, the Wise.

3:7

It is He who sent down upon you the Scripture;

3:7

in it are univocal signs, which are the matrix of the Scripture, and others, subject to resemblance.

3:7

As for those in whose cores is a deviation, they follow what, in the Scripture, lends itself to resemblance, in pursuit of the trial and in pursuit of its interpretation;

3:7

but none knows its interpretation, except God.

3:7

And those who are deeply rooted in knowledge say: "We believe in it; all of it comes from our Guardian";

3:7

and only the possessors of intelligence remember.

"Our Guardian, do not let our cores deviate after You have guided us, and bestow on us, from Yourself, a benevolence;

You, indeed, are the Bestower.

Our Guardian, You are the One who brings mankind together for a day about which there is no doubt.

God indeed does not fail His promise."

Indeed, those who disown, neither their goods nor their children will avail them at all against God.

3:11

And those are the fuel of the Fire, in the image of the conduct of the clan of Fir'awn,

3:11

and of those before them, who denied Our signs; God then seized them for their offenses.

God is severe in sanction.

Say to those who disown: "You will be defeated, and gathered toward Jahannam."

And what an evil bed!

3:13

You had a sign in those two battalions that met:

3:13

one fought in the way of God, and the other disowned; you saw them, with the naked eye, twice what they were.

3:13

God fortifies, by His help, whom He wills.

3:13

There is surely a lesson in that for the possessors of sight.

3:14

The love of passions has been embellished for men: women, sons, heaped quintals of gold and silver, marked horses, cattle, and tilth.

3:14

That is the enjoyment of the present life;

3:14

but it is with God that the fine place of resort is found.

3:15

Say: "Shall I inform you of something better than that?

3:15

For those who guard themselves, with their Guardian, gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally, purified spouses, and a good pleasure from God."

God is All-Seeing of His obedient ones,

those who say: "Our Guardian, we have indeed believed; forgive us, then, our offenses, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire",

the patient, the veracious, the devoted, those who spend, and those who ask forgiveness in the last hours of the night.

3:18

God bears witness, and so do the Agents and the possessors of knowledge, that there is no deity but Him, maintaining equity.

3:18

There is no deity but Him,

3:18

the All-Powerful, the Wise.

3:19

The Law, with God, is indeed being true to Him alone.

3:19

And those to whom the Scripture was given diverged only after knowledge had come to them,

3:19

out of iniquity among themselves.

3:19

And whoever disowns the signs of God — God is indeed swift in reckoning.

3:20

If they dispute with you, say then: "I render my direction true to God alone, as do those who have followed me."

3:20

And say to those to whom the Scripture was given, and to the people without a prior Scripture: "Have you become true to God alone?"

If they become so, they then let themselves be guided;

and if they turn their backs, only the transmission is incumbent upon you.

God is All-Seeing of His obedient ones.

Indeed, those who disown the signs of God, kill the informants without right, and kill those who, among men, order equity — announce to them a painful punishment.

Those are the ones whose works have collapsed, in the present life and in the last life,

and they will have no help.

3:23

Have you not seen those to whom a portion of the Scripture was given, called to the Scripture of God so that it may judge between them, then a fraction of them turns its back, turning away?

That is because they said: "The Fire will touch us only for numbered days"; and what they used to invent deluded them in their Law.

How then, when We will have brought them together for a day about which there is no doubt, and every Self will have been faithfully repaid for what it has earned, without being wronged?

3:26

Say: "O God, Sovereign of dominion! You give dominion to whom You will, and You strip dominion from whom You will; You make mighty whom You will, and You humiliate whom You will; good is in Your hand.

3:26

You are indeed capable of all things.

3:27

You make the night penetrate into the day, and You make the day penetrate into the night; You bring forth the living from the dead, and You bring forth the dead from the living; and You provide for whom You will, without reckoning."

Let not the believers take those who disown as allies, besides the believers;

and whoever does that has nothing more to do with God — except if you guard yourselves from them as a precaution.

And God warns you against Himself,

and to God is the destination.

Say: "Whether you hide what is in your chests, or make it appear, God knows it.

And He knows what is in the heavens and what is on the earth.

And God is capable of all things."

The day when every Self will find present what it has done of good,

and what it has done of evil, it would wish there were between that and itself a distant span.

And God warns you against Himself.

God is full of kindness toward His obedient ones.

3:31

Say: "If you love God, follow me: God will love you and forgive you your offenses.

3:31

And God is Most-Forgiving, Benevolent."

3:32

Say: "Defer to God and the messenger";

3:32

and if they turn their backs, God indeed does not love those who disown.

3:33–34

God has chosen Adam, Nuh, the clan of Ibrahim, and the clan of Imran, above all beings, descendants one from another.

God is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

3:35

When the wife of Imran said: "My Guardian, I make a vow to You of what is in my belly, made independent of all; accept it, then, from me.

3:35

You, indeed, are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing."

3:36

Then, when she gave birth to her, she said: "My Guardian, I have indeed given birth to her, a girl" — God knew better, though, what she had given birth to —

3:36

"and the male is not like the female;

3:36

I have given her the attribute Maryam,

3:36

and I place her, and her descendants, in Your refuge, against the banished Diverter."

3:37

Her Guardian received her with a beautiful reception, and made her grow with a beautiful growth,

3:37

and entrusted custody of her to Zakariya.

3:37

Every time Zakariya entered upon her in the oratory, he found near her a provision.

3:37

He said: "O Maryam! From where does this come to you?"

She said: "It comes from God.

God provides for whom He wills, without reckoning."

3:38

Right there, Zakariya invoked his Guardian.

3:38

He said: "My Guardian, bestow on me, from Yourself, wholesome descendants; You are indeed the Hearer of invocation."

3:39

The Agents called him while he was making contact in the oratory: "God announces to you Yahya, confirming a word from God, a chief, a man of total continence, and an informant, among those who are sound."

3:40

He said: "My Guardian, how shall I have a boy, when old age has already reached me, and my wife is barren?"

3:40

He said: "Thus it is:

3:40

God does what He wills."

3:41

He said: "My Guardian, appoint for me a sign."

3:41

He said: "Your sign will be that you will not speak to men except by gestures, for three days.

3:41

And remember your Guardian abundantly, and glorify in the evening and the morning."

3:42

And when the Agents said: "O Maryam! God has chosen you, purified you, and chosen you above the women of all beings.

3:43

O Maryam! Be devoted toward your Guardian, prostrate, and kneel with those who kneel."

3:44

That is part of the information about what escapes the senses, which We reveal to you.

3:44

You were not with them when they cast their reeds as to which of them would have custody of Maryam,

3:45

and you were not with them when they quarreled. When the Agents said: "O Maryam! God announces to you a word from Himself,

3:45

whose attribute will be Al-Massih, Issa, son of Maryam, of high standing in the present life and in the last life, and among those brought near.

And he will speak to men in the cradle and in his prime,

and will be among those who are sound."

She said: "My Guardian, how shall I have a child, when no human has touched me?"

He said: "Thus it is:

God creates what He wills.

When He decrees a matter, He only says to it: 'Be',

and it is."

3:48–49

"And He will teach him the Code, wisdom, the Tawrah and the Injil, and a messenger to the Sons of Israel: I bring you a sign from your Guardian:

I create for you, from clay, the form of a bird, then I breathe into it, and it becomes a bird, with God's permission.

And I restore the born-blind and the leper, and I bring the dead back to life, with God's permission.

And I inform you of what you eat and what you store up in your houses.

There is surely in that a sign for you, if you are believers.

And confirming what, of the Tawrah, precedes me, and to permit you a part of what was prohibited to you.

And I bring you a sign from your Guardian;

so guard yourselves toward God and defer to me.

God is indeed my Guardian and your Guardian; obey Him, then.

This is a straight path."

3:52

When Issa perceived disowning from them, he said: "Who are my helpers toward God?"

3:52

The disciples said: "We are the helpers of God.

We believe in God, and bear witness that we are true to Him alone.

Our Guardian, we have believed in what You have sent down, and we have followed the messenger; inscribe us, then, among the witnesses."

3:54

And they plotted, and God plotted,

3:54

and God is the best of those who plot.

3:55

When God said: "O Issa! I am indeed going to keep you faithfully, elevate you to Me, and purify you from those who disowned,

3:55

and place those who followed you above those who disowned, until the Day of Appearance.

3:55

Then to Me will be your return, and I will judge between you concerning what you used to differ over.

3:56

As for those who disowned, I will punish them with a severe punishment, in the present life and in the last life,

3:56

and they will have no help.

3:57

And as for those who have believed and done sound deeds, He will faithfully repay them their rewards.

3:57

God does not love the wrongdoers."

That is what We recite to you of the signs and the wise Reminder.

3:59

The example of Issa, with God, is indeed like that of Adam:

3:59

He created him from earth, then said to him: "Be",

3:59

and he was.

3:60

The truth comes from your Guardian;

3:60

so do not be among those who contend.

3:61

To whoever would dispute with you about this, after knowledge has come to you, say: "Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves, then let us pray fervently, and call the curse of God upon the liars."

3:62

This is surely the true account,

and there is no deity but God.

And God is surely the All-Powerful, the Wise.

If they turn their backs, God is indeed All-Knowing of the corrupters.

3:64

Say: "O people of the Scripture! Come to an equitable word between us and you: that we obey none but God, that we associate nothing with Him, and that none of us take others as masters besides God."

3:64

If they turn their backs, say then: "Bear witness that we are true to God alone."

3:65

O people of the Scripture! Why do you dispute concerning Ibrahim,

when the Tawrah and the Injil were sent down only after him?

Will you not then reason?

Here you are disputing about that of which you have some knowledge; but why do you dispute about that of which you have no knowledge?

God knows,

and you do not know.

3:67

Ibrahim was neither Reoriented nor a Helper, but he was wholly turned toward God, true to Him alone,

and he was not among those who associate.

3:68

Of mankind, those closest to Ibrahim are surely those who followed him, as well as this informant and those who have believed.

God is the protector of the believers.

3:69

A group among the people of the Scripture would have liked to lead you astray;

but they lead astray none but themselves, without sensing it.

3:70

O people of the Scripture! Why do you disown the signs of God, when you bear witness to them?

3:71

O people of the Scripture! Why do you cloak the truth in falsehood, and withhold the truth, when you know?

3:72

And a group among the people of the Scripture said: "Believe in what has been sent down to those who have believed, at the start of the day, and disown it at its end, perhaps they will return."

"And give credit only to him who follows your Law."

Say: "The guidance is indeed the guidance of God" — lest anyone be given the like of what you were given, or lest they dispute with you before your Guardian.

Say: "Favor is in the hand of God,

He gives it to whom He wills.

God is Vast, All-Knowing."

He reserves His benevolence for whom He wills.

And God holds the immense favor.

3:75

And among the people of the Scripture, there are some who, if you entrust them with a quintal, will return it to you;

3:75

and there are some who, if you entrust them with a dinar, do not return it to you unless you keep pressing them for it.

3:75

That is because they say: "We have, toward the people without a prior Scripture, no obligation",

3:75

and they say the lie against God, knowingly.

3:76

But yes: whoever is faithful to his pact and guards himself — God indeed loves those who guard themselves.

Indeed, those who buy, with the pact of God and their oaths, a paltry price — those are the ones who will have no allotment in the last life; God will not speak to them, will not look at them on the Day of Appearance, and will not purify them.

And they will have a painful punishment.

3:78

And among them, there is surely a fraction who twist their tongues with the Scripture, so that you might take it for an extract of the Scripture, when it is not part of it,

and they say: "This comes from God",

3:78

when it does not come from God,

and they say the lie against God, knowingly.

3:79

It is not for any human to whom God has given the Scripture, the judgment, and the charge of informing, to then say to men: "Be obedient to me, besides God"; but rather: "Be spiritual masters, by reason of what you teach of the Scripture and what you study."

3:80

And he would not order you to take the Agents and the informants as masters.

3:80

Would he order you to disown, after you have become true to God alone?

3:81

And when God took the solemn engagement of the informants: "What I have given you of Scripture and wisdom, then a messenger comes to you, confirming what is with you, you must surely believe in him, and surely help him."

3:81

He said: "Have you consented, and taken upon yourselves My yoke on this condition?"

3:81

They said: "We have consented."

3:81

He said: "Bear witness to it, then, and I am, with you, among the witnesses."

3:82

Whoever turns his back after that — those are the oversteppers.

3:83

Would they seek then a Law other than God's, while whoever is in the heavens and the earth is true to Him alone, willingly or unwillingly,

3:83

and to Him they will be returned?

3:84

Say: "We believe in God, in what has been sent down to us, in what was sent down to Ibrahim, Isma'il, Ishaq, Yaacoub, and the bloodlines, and in what was given to Moussa, to Issa, and to the informants, from their Guardian; we make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we are true."

And whoever seeks a Law other than being true to God alone, it will never be accepted from him,

and he will be, in the last life, among the losers.

How would God guide a people who disowned after having believed, and after having testified that the messenger is true, when the clear proofs had come to them?

And God does not guide the wrongdoing people.

Those are the ones whose recompense is that upon them will weigh the curse of God, the Agents, and mankind, all together, wherein they will abide eternally; the punishment will not be lightened for them, and they will not be granted a delay — except those who turn back after that, and become sound: God is indeed Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.

Indeed, those who disown after having believed, then increase in disowning, their repentance will never be accepted,

and those are the astray.

Indeed, those who disown and die while disowning, there will never be accepted from any of them the whole earth filled with gold, even were he to offer it as ransom.

Those are the ones who will have a painful punishment,

and they will have no help.

3:92

Virtue will not accrue to you unless you spend of what you love.

3:92

And whatever you spend, God is indeed All-Knowing of it.

All food was permitted to the Sons of Israel, except what Israel had prohibited to himself, before the Tawrah was sent down.

Say: "Bring, then, the Tawrah, and recite it, if you are veracious."

Whoever, after that, invents the lie against God — those are the wrongdoers.

Say: "God has spoken with veracity.

3:95

Follow, then, the doctrine of Ibrahim, wholly turned toward God,

and he was not among those who associate."

The first House set down for mankind is surely that at the place of the throng, blessed and a guidance for all beings; in it are clear signs.

The station of Ibrahim,

and whoever enters it is secure.

And the Hajj of the House is a duty toward God for mankind, for whoever has the capacity to take the way to it;

and whoever disowns — God is indeed Self-Sufficient, independent of all beings.

3:98

Say: "O people of the Scripture! Why do you disown the signs of God, when God is witness to what you do?"

3:99

Say: "O people of the Scripture! Why do you bar from the way of God him who has believed, seeking to make it crooked, while you are witnesses to it?"

And God is not heedless of what you do.

3:100

O you who have believed! If you defer to a fraction among those to whom the Scripture was given, they will bring you back, after your faith, to a disowning.

And how would you disown, when the signs of God are recited to you, and His messenger is among you?

And whoever holds firmly to God is already guided to a straight path.

O you who have believed! Guard yourselves toward God as one should guard oneself toward Him,

and do not die except being true to Him alone.

3:103

And hold, all of you, firmly, to the rope of God,

3:103

and do not divide yourselves.

3:103

And remember God's blessing upon you, when you were enemies, and He reconciled your cores, so that you became, by His blessing, brothers;

3:103

and you were at the edge of a pit of fire, and He saved you from it.

3:103

Thus does God make His signs clear to you, perhaps you will let yourselves be guided.

And let there be from among you a community that calls to good, orders what is recognized, and forbids what is disavowed.

And those are the ones who succeed.

And do not be like those who divided themselves and diverged after the clear proofs had come to them.

3:106

And those are the ones who will have an immense punishment, on the day when faces will brighten and faces will darken.

3:106

As for those whose faces will have darkened: "Did you disown after your faith? Taste, then, the punishment, for having disowned."

3:107

And as for those whose faces will have brightened, they will be in the benevolence of God,

wherein they will abide eternally.

Those are the signs of God, which We recite to you in truth.

And God wants no wrong for all beings.

And to God belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth,

and it is to God that all matters return.

You are the best community brought forth for mankind: you order what is recognized, you forbid what is disavowed, and you believe in God.

3:110

And had the people of the Scripture believed, it would have been better for them.

Among them, there are believers,

but most of them are oversteppers.

They can never harm you,

except by a nuisance.

And if they fight you, they will turn their backs to you;

then, they will not be helped.

Humiliation has been imprinted upon them, wherever they are surprised,

except by a rope from God and a rope from mankind; they incur the anger of God,

and misery has been imprinted upon them.

That is because they used to disown the signs of God, and kill the informants without right.

It is for having disobeyed and crossed the limits.

3:113

They are not all equal:

3:113

among the people of the Scripture, there is an upright community, which recites the signs of God in the hours of the night, prostrating.

3:114

They believe in God and the Last Day, order what is recognized, forbid what is disavowed, and speed toward good deeds.

3:114

And those are among those who are sound.

3:115

And whatever good they do, they will never have it disowned.

3:115

God is All-Knowing of those who guard themselves.

Indeed, those who disown, neither their goods nor their children will avail them at all against God,

and those are the companions of the Fire, they abide therein eternally.

The example of what they spend in this present life is that of an icy wind, which strikes the tilth of a people who have wronged themselves, and annihilates it.

And God did not wrong them,

but it is themselves that they wrong.

O you who have believed! Do not take close confidants apart from your own: they never cease to cause you confusion, and would like you to be overwhelmed.

Hatred has already appeared in their mouths, and what their chests hide is far graver still.

We have already made the signs clear to you, if you reason.

3:119

Here you are, you who love them, while they do not love you, and you believe in the whole of the Scripture.

And when they meet you, they say: "We have believed";

but when they are alone, they bite their fingertips, out of rage against you.

Say: "Die in your rage."

God is indeed All-Knowing of what the chests contain.

3:120

If good touches you, it vexes them,

3:120

and if evil strikes you, they rejoice at it.

3:120

But if you are patient and guard yourselves, their scheming will not harm you at all.

3:120

God indeed encompasses perfectly what they do.

3:121

And when you left your household early, to settle the believers in positions for battle.

3:121

God is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

3:122

When two of your groups almost gave ground, God being the protector of both —

3:122

and it is to God that the believers should entrust themselves.

3:123

God indeed helped you at Badr, when you were humiliated.

3:123

Guard yourselves, then, toward God, perhaps you will be grateful.

3:124

When you said to the believers: "Is it not enough for you that your Guardian reinforces you with three thousand Agents sent down?"

3:125

But yes: if you are patient and guard yourselves, and they come to you, right then, your Guardian will reinforce you with five thousand distinctly marked Agents.

And God made it only good tidings for you, and so that your cores might be calmed by it.

But help comes only from God, the All-Powerful, the Wise, so that He may cut off a part of those who disown, or lay them low, and they depart disappointed. You have, in this matter, no power: either He turns toward them with clemency, or He punishes them, for they are wrongdoers.

3:129

And to God belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth.

3:129

He forgives whom He wills, and He punishes whom He wills.

3:129

And God is Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.

3:130

O you who have believed! Do not devour usury, doubled and redoubled.

3:130

And guard yourselves toward God, perhaps you will succeed.

3:131

And guard yourselves against the Fire, prepared for those who disown.

3:132

And defer to God and the messenger, perhaps benevolence will be shown to you.

And speed toward a forgiveness from your Guardian, and a Garden whose extent is that of the heavens and the earth, prepared for those who guard themselves, who spend in ease and hardship, restrain their rage, and overlook men.

God loves those who do good.

3:135

And those who, when they commit an indecency or wrong themselves, remember God and ask forgiveness for their offenses —

3:135

and who forgives offenses, but God? —

3:135

and who do not persist in what they did, while knowing.

Those are the ones whose recompense is a forgiveness from their Guardian, and gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally.

And what an excellent reward for those who work!

Norms have indeed passed before you;

so travel through the earth and look at what was the end of those who denied.

This is a clear exposition for mankind, a guidance and an admonition for those who guard themselves.

And do not slacken, and do not grieve: you are the most exalted, if you are believers.

If a wound touches you, a similar wound has already touched that people.

3:140

Thus do the days go: We make them pass from one to another among mankind,

so that God may distinguish those who have believed, and take from among you witnesses —

God does not love the wrongdoers —

and so that God may purify those who have believed, and bring to naught those who disown.

Or did you think you would enter the Garden without God having yet distinguished those among you who have striven, and distinguished the patient?

You indeed wished for death before meeting it; you have now seen it, and you were looking on.

3:144

Muhammad is only a messenger; messengers have indeed passed before him.

3:144

If he then died, or was killed, would you turn back on your heels?

3:144

And whoever turns back on his heels does not harm God at all,

3:144

and God will recompense the grateful.

And it is not for any Self to die, except with the permission of God,

3:145

according to a register with an appointed term.

And whoever wants the requital of the present life, We give it to him;

and whoever wants the requital of the last life, We give it to him.

And We will recompense the grateful.

3:146

How many an informant has been killed, having at his side many attached to the Guardian!

3:146

They did not slacken for what struck them in the way of God, did not weaken, and did not bend.

3:146

God loves the patient.

3:147

And their only saying was to say: "Our Guardian, forgive us our offenses and our excesses in our conduct, make firm our steps, and help us against the people who disown."

3:148

God then gave them the requital of the present life, and the beautiful requital of the last life.

3:148

God loves those who do good.

O you who have believed! If you defer to those who disown, they will bring you back on your heels, and you will go back as losers.

God, rather, is your nearest Guarantor,

and He is the best of helpers.

We will cast terror into the cores of those who disown, for having associated with God that for which He has sent down no authority.

And their resort will be the Fire,

and how wretched is the sojourn of the wrongdoers!

3:152

God indeed kept His promise to you, when you were decimating them with His permission,

3:152

until, having given ground, you disputed among yourselves over the matter, and disobeyed, after He had shown you what you loved.

3:152

Among you, there were some who wanted the present life, and among you, there were some who wanted the last life;

3:152

then He turned you away from them, so as to test you.

3:152

He has indeed already overlooked it for you.

3:152

God holds a favor toward the believers.

3:153

When you were climbing, without turning back to anyone, while the messenger was calling you, at the rear of your ranks; He then requited you with anguish upon anguish, so that you would not grieve either for what you had missed, or for what had struck you.

3:153

And God is Intimately Acquainted with what you do.

3:154

Then He sent down upon you, after the anguish, a security, a drowsiness that covered a group among you,

3:154

while a group, preoccupied with its own Self, formed about God, contrary to the truth, a presumption of the age of ignorance,

3:154

saying: "Do we have any part in the matter?"

3:154

Say: "The matter, entirely, indeed belongs to God."

3:154

They hide, within themselves, what they do not make appear to you,

3:154

saying: "Had we had, in this matter, any power, we would not have been killed here."

3:154

Say: "Had you been in your houses, those for whom killing was prescribed would certainly have gone forth to the places where they were to lie down" — and so that God might test what is in your chests, and purify what is in your cores.

3:154

And God is All-Knowing of what the chests contain.

3:155

Those among you who turned their backs, on the day the two forces met, it was only the Diverter who made them slip, for a part of what they had earned.

God has indeed already overlooked it for them.

God is Most-Forgiving, Forbearing.

O you who have believed! Do not be like those who disowned, and who say of their brothers, when they travel through the land or go off on an expedition: "Had they stayed with us, they would not have died, and would not have been killed" — so that God may make of it a desolation in their cores.

God gives life and causes death.

And God is All-Seeing of what you do.

And if you are killed in the way of God, or if you die, a forgiveness from God and a benevolence are indeed better than what they amass.

And whether you die, or are killed, it is to God that you will be gathered.

3:159

It is by a benevolence from God that you have been gentle toward them;

3:159

and had you been surly, hard of core, they would certainly have dispersed away from you.

3:159

So overlook it for them, ask forgiveness for them, and confer with them on the matter;

3:159

and once your decision is made, entrust yourself to God.

3:159

God loves those who entrust themselves.

If God helps you, none can overcome you;

and if He abandons you, who then could help you after Him?

And it is to God that the believers should entrust themselves.

3:161

It is not for an informant to commit an embezzlement;

3:161

and whoever commits an embezzlement will come, on the Day of Appearance, with what he embezzled,

3:161

then every Self will be faithfully repaid for what it has earned, without being wronged.

Is he who follows the good pleasure of God, then, like him who incurs the displeasure of God, and whose resort will be Jahannam?

And what an evil destination!

They have degrees with God.

God is All-Seeing of what they do.

3:164

God has indeed graced the believers, by raising up among them a messenger, from among themselves, who recites His signs to them, purifies them, and teaches them the Scripture and the wisdom, though before they were in manifest error.

3:165

How then, when misfortune strikes you, after you had caused double that to strike, do you say: "From where, then, does this come?"

3:165

Say: "This comes from yourselves."

3:165

God is indeed capable of all things.

And what struck you, on the day the two forces met, was with God's permission, and so that He might distinguish the believers, and distinguish those who practiced hypocrisy,

and to whom it was said: "Come, fight in the way of God, or repel";

they said: "If we knew how to fight, we would certainly have followed you."

That day, they were closer to disowning than to faith,

saying with their mouths what was not in their cores.

God knows best what they withhold.

Those who, having stayed seated, said of their brothers: "Had they deferred to us, they would not have been killed."

Say: "Avert death from yourselves, then, if you are veracious."

3:169

And do not ever think that those who have been killed in the way of God are dead.

3:170

No, they are alive, with their Guardian, provided, rejoicing in what God has given them of His favor, and exulting for those who, remaining behind them, have not yet joined them: no fear upon them, and they will not grieve.

They exult in a blessing from God and a favor, and that God does not let the reward of the believers dissipate, those who responded to God and to the messenger after the wound had struck them.

To those among them who did good and guarded themselves belongs an immense reward.

3:173

Those to whom men said: "Men have indeed come together against you, so dread them" — that increased their faith.

3:173

And they said: "God suffices us; what an excellent trustee!"

3:174

They returned then with a blessing from God and a favor, without any evil having touched them, and they followed the good pleasure of God.

3:174

God holds an immense favor.

3:175

It is only that Diverter who makes you fear his allies; do not fear them, then,

3:175

but fear Me, if you are believers.

And let not those grieve you who speed into disowning:

they will not harm God at all.

God wants to assign them no share in the last life,

and they will have an immense punishment.

Indeed, those who have bought disowning at the price of faith will not harm God at all, and they will have a painful punishment.

And let those who disown by no means think that the leeway We grant them is a good for themselves:

We grant it to them only so that they may increase in transgression,

and they will have a degrading punishment.

It is not for God to forsake the believers in the state you are in, without distinguishing the vile from the wholesome,

3:179

and it is not for God to let you pierce what escapes the senses,

but God elects, among His messengers, whom He wills.

So believe in God and in His messengers;

and if you believe and guard yourselves, you will have an immense reward.

And let those who are stingy with what God has given them of His favor by no means think that it is a good for them;

it is rather an ill for them.

They will be encircled by what they were stingy with, on the Day of Appearance.

And to God belongs the inheritance of the heavens and the earth.

And God is Intimately Acquainted with what you do.

3:181

God has certainly heard the saying of those who said: "God is poor, and we are rich."

3:181

We will record what they said, and their killing of the informants without right, and We will say: "Taste the punishment of the burning fire.

That is for what your hands have prepared; and God is in no way one to wrong the constrained under compulsion."

Those who said: "God has bound us by a pact not to give credit to any messenger, until he brings us an offering that the fire consumes",

say: "Messengers before me indeed came to you with clear proofs, and with what you said; why then did you kill them, if you are veracious?"

3:184

If they deny you, messengers have already been denied before you, who had come with clear proofs, the Formularies, and the illuminating Scripture.

3:185

Every Self will taste death,

3:185

and it is only on the Day of Appearance that you will be faithfully repaid your rewards.

3:185

Whoever is pulled away from the Fire and admitted into the Garden has thus triumphed.

3:185

And the present life is nothing but a deluding enjoyment.

3:186

You will surely be tested in your goods and in your Selves, and you will surely hear, from those to whom the Scripture was given before you, and from those who have associated, much nuisance.

But if you are patient and guard yourselves, that is indeed among the matters requiring resolve.

3:187

And when God took the solemn engagement of those to whom the Scripture was given: "You will surely make it clear to mankind, and you will not withhold it"; but they cast it behind their backs, and bought with it a paltry price.

How evil is what they buy!

Do not ever think that those who rejoice in what they have done, and love to be praised for what they did not do — do not ever think that they will evade the punishment.

And they will have a painful punishment.

And to God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth.

And God is capable of all things.

There are surely, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day, signs for the possessors of intelligence, those who remember God, standing, sitting, or lying on their sides, and reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth:

"Our Guardian, You did not create this in vain. Glory be to You!

Protect us, then, from the punishment of the Fire.

3:192

Our Guardian, whoever You admit into the Fire, You have indeed covered him with disgrace,

3:192

and the wrongdoers have no help.

3:193

Our Guardian, we have heard a herald calling to faith: Believe in your Guardian — and we have believed.

3:193

Our Guardian, forgive us, then, our offenses, cover for us our evil deeds, and keep us faithfully with the virtuous.

3:194

Our Guardian, and grant us what You promised us through Your messengers, and do not cover us with disgrace on the Day of Appearance:

3:194

You indeed do not fail Your promise."

3:195

Their Guardian answered them, then: "I do not let the deed of one of you who acts dissipate, male or female —

3:195

you are of one another.

3:195

Those who have emigrated, been expelled from their abodes, been troubled on My way, fought, and been killed, I will surely cover their evil deeds, and I will surely admit them into gardens beneath which rivers flow" — a requital from God.

3:195

And it is with God that the beautiful requital is found.

Let not the movements of those who disown through the lands delude you.

It is an enjoyment of little worth,

then their resort will be Jahannam,

and what an evil bed!

But those who have guarded themselves toward their Guardian will have gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally, as a welcome from God.

3:198

And what is with God is better for the virtuous.

3:199

And among the people of the Scripture, there are surely some who believe in God, in what has been sent down to you, and in what was sent down to them, humble toward God,

not buying, with the signs of God, a paltry price.

Those are the ones who have their reward with their Guardian.

God is indeed swift in reckoning.

3:200

O you who have believed! Be patient, surpass in patience, stand ready with firmness, and guard yourselves toward God, perhaps you will succeed.
