Al-Imran
The Rope of God
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Alif. Lam. Mim.
God, there is no deity but Him,
the Living, the Self-Subsisting. He sent down upon you the Scripture, in truth, confirming what precedes it,
and He sent down, before, the Tawrah and the Injil, a guidance for mankind, and He sent down the Discernment.
Indeed, those who have disowned the signs of God will have a severe punishment.
God is All-Powerful, possessor of vengeance.
Indeed, nothing is hidden from God, neither on earth nor in the sky.
It is He who gives you form in the wombs as He wills.
There is no deity but Him,
the All-Powerful, the Wise.
It is He who sent down upon you the Scripture;
in it are univocal signs, which are the matrix of the Scripture, and others, subject to resemblance.
As for those in whose cores is a deviation, they follow what, in the Scripture, lends itself to resemblance, in pursuit of the trial and in pursuit of its interpretation;
but none knows its interpretation, except God.
And those who are deeply rooted in knowledge say: "We believe in it; all of it comes from our Guardian";
and only the possessors of intelligence remember.
"Our Guardian, do not let our cores deviate after You have guided us, and bestow on us, from Yourself, a benevolence;
You, indeed, are the Bestower.
Our Guardian, You are the One who brings mankind together for a day about which there is no doubt.
God indeed does not fail His promise."
Indeed, those who disown, neither their goods nor their children will avail them at all against God.
And those are the ones who will fuel the Fire, in the image of the conduct of the clan of Fir'awn,
and of those before them, who denied Our signs; God then seized them for their offenses.
God is severe in sanction.
Say to those who disown: "You will be defeated, and gathered toward Jahannam."
And what an evil bed!
You had a sign in those two battalions that met:
one fought in the way of God, and the other disowned; you saw them, with the naked eye, twice what they were.
God fortifies, by His help, whom He wills.
There is surely a lesson in that for the possessors of sight.
The love of passions has been embellished for men: women, sons, heaped quintals of gold and silver, marked horses, cattle, and tilth.
That is the enjoyment of the present life;
but it is with God that the fine place of return is found.
Say: "Shall I inform you of something better than that?
For those who guard themselves, with their Guardian, gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally, purified spouses, and a good pleasure from God."
God is All-Seeing of His obedient ones,
those who say: "Our Guardian, we have indeed believed; forgive us, then, our offenses, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire",
the patient, the veracious, the devoted, those who spend, and those who ask forgiveness before dawn.
God bears witness, and so do the Agents and the possessors of knowledge, that there is no deity but Him, maintaining equity.
There is no deity but Him,
the All-Powerful, the Wise.
The Law, with God, is indeed being true to Him alone.
And those to whom the Scripture was given diverged only after knowledge had come to them,
out of iniquity among themselves.
And whoever disowns the signs of God — God is indeed swift in reckoning.
If they dispute with you, say then: "I render my direction true to God alone, as do those who have followed me."
And say to those to whom the Scripture was given, and to the people without a prior Scripture: "Have you become true to God alone?"
If they become so, they then let themselves be guided;
and if they turn their backs, only the transmission is incumbent upon you.
God is All-Seeing of His obedient ones.
Indeed, those who disown the signs of God, kill the informants without right, and kill those who, among men, order equity — announce to them a painful punishment.
Those are the ones whose works have collapsed, in the present life and in the last life,
and they will have no help.
Have you not seen those to whom a portion of the Scripture was given, called to the Scripture of God so that it may judge between them, then a fraction of them turns its back, turning away?
That is because they said: "The Fire will touch us only for numbered days"; and what they used to invent deluded them in their Law.
How then, when We will have brought them together for a day about which there is no doubt, and every Self will have been faithfully repaid for what it has earned, without being wronged?
Say: "O God, Sovereign of dominion! You give dominion to whom You will, and You strip dominion from whom You will; You make mighty whom You will, and You humiliate whom You will; good is in Your hand.
You are indeed capable of all things.
You make the night penetrate into the day, and You make the day penetrate into the night; You bring forth the living from the dead, and You bring forth the dead from the living; and You provide for whom You will, without reckoning."
Let not the believers take those who disown as allies, besides the believers;
and whoever does that has nothing more to do with God — except if you guard yourselves from them as a precaution.
And God warns you against Himself,
and to God is the destination.
Say: "Whether you hide what is in your chests, or make it appear, God knows it.
And He knows what is in the heavens and what is on the earth.
And God is capable of all things."
The day when every Self will find present what it has done of good,
and what it has done of evil, it would wish there were between that and itself a distant span.
And God warns you against Himself.
God is full of kindness toward His obedient ones.
Say: "If you love God, follow me: God will love you and forgive you your offenses.
And God is Most-Forgiving, Benevolent."
Say: "Defer to God and the messenger";
and if they turn their backs, God indeed does not love those who disown.
God has chosen Adam, Nuh, the clan of Ibrahim, and the clan of Imran, above all beings, descendants one from another.
God is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
When the wife of Imran said: "My Guardian, I make a vow to You of what is in my belly, made independent of all; accept it, then, from me.
You, indeed, are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing."
Then, when she gave birth to her, she said: "My Guardian, I have indeed given birth to her, a girl" — God knew better, though, what she had given birth to —
"and the male is not like the female;
I have given her the attribute Maryam,
and I place her, and her descendants, in Your refuge, against the banished Diverter."
Her Guardian received her with a beautiful reception, and made her grow with a beautiful growth,
and entrusted custody of her to Zakariya.
Every time Zakariya entered upon her in the oratory, he found near her a provision.
He said: "O Maryam! From where does this come to you?"
She said: "It comes from God.
God provides for whom He wills, without reckoning."
Right there, Zakariya invoked his Guardian.
He said: "My Guardian, bestow on me, from Yourself, wholesome descendants; You are indeed the Hearer of invocation."
The Agents called him while he was making contact in the oratory: "God announces to you Yahya, confirming a word from God, a chief, a man of total continence, and an informant, among those who are sound."
He said: "My Guardian, how shall I have a boy, when old age has already reached me, and my wife is barren?"
He said: "Thus it is:
God does what He wills."
He said: "My Guardian, appoint for me a sign."
He said: "Your sign will be that you will not speak to men except by gestures, for three days.
And remember your Guardian abundantly, and glorify in the evening and the morning."
And when the Agents said: "O Maryam! God has chosen you, purified you, and chosen you above the women of all beings.
O Maryam! Be devoted toward your Guardian, prostrate, and kneel with those who kneel."
That is part of the information about what escapes the senses, which We reveal to you.
You were not with them when they cast their reeds as to which of them would have custody of Maryam,

whose attribute will be Al-Massih, Issa, son of Maryam, of high standing in the present life and in the last life, and among those brought near.
And he will speak to men in the cradle and in his prime,
and will be among those who are sound."
She said: "My Guardian, how shall I have a child, when no human has touched me?"
He said: "Thus it is:
God creates what He wills.
When He decrees a matter, He only says to it: 'Be',
and it is."
"And He will teach him the Code, wisdom, the Tawrah and the Injil, and a messenger to the Sons of Israel: I bring you a sign from your Guardian:
I create for you, from clay, the form of a bird, then I breathe into it, and it becomes a bird, with God's permission.
And I restore the born-blind and the leper, and I bring the dead back to life, with God's permission.
And I inform you of what you eat and what you store up in your houses.
There is surely in that a sign for you, if you are believers.
And confirming what, of the Tawrah, precedes me, and to permit you a part of what was prohibited to you.
And I bring you a sign from your Guardian;
so guard yourselves toward God and defer to me.
God is indeed my Guardian and your Guardian; obey Him, then.
This is a straight path."
When Issa perceived disowning from them, he said: "Who are my helpers toward God?"
The disciples said: "We are the helpers of God.
We believe in God, and bear witness that we are true to Him alone.
Our Guardian, we have believed in what You have sent down, and we have followed the messenger; inscribe us, then, among the witnesses."
And they plotted, and God plotted,
and God is the best of those who plot.
When God said: "O Issa! I am indeed going to keep you faithfully, elevate you to Me, and purify you from those who disowned,
and place those who followed you above those who disowned, until the Day of Appearance.
Then to Me will be your return, and I will judge between you concerning what you used to differ over.
As for those who disowned, I will punish them with a severe punishment, in the present life and in the last life,
and they will have no help.
And as for those who have believed and done sound deeds, He will faithfully repay them their rewards.
God does not love the wrongdoers."
That is what We recite to you of the signs and the wise Reminder.
The example of Issa, with God, is indeed like that of Adam:
He created him from earth, then said to him: "Be",
and he was.
The truth comes from your Guardian;
so do not be among those who contend.
To whoever would dispute with you about this, after knowledge has come to you, say: "Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves, then let us pray fervently, and call the curse of God upon the liars."
This is surely the true account,
and there is no deity but God.
And God is surely the All-Powerful, the Wise.
If they turn their backs, God is indeed All-Knowing of the corrupters.
Say: "O people of the Scripture! Come to an equitable word between us and you: that we obey none but God, that we associate nothing with Him, and that none of us take others as masters besides God."
If they turn their backs, say then: "Bear witness that we are true to God alone."
O people of the Scripture! Why do you dispute concerning Ibrahim,
when the Tawrah and the Injil were sent down only after him?
Will you not then reason?
Here you are disputing about that of which you have some knowledge; but why do you dispute about that of which you have no knowledge?
God knows,
and you do not know.
Ibrahim was neither Reoriented nor a Helper, but he was wholly turned toward God, true to Him alone,
and he was not among those who associate.
Of mankind, those closest to Ibrahim are surely those who followed him, as well as this informant and those who have believed.
God is the protector of the believers.
A group among the people of the Scripture would have liked to lead you astray;
but they lead astray none but themselves, without sensing it.
O people of the Scripture! Why do you disown the signs of God, when you bear witness to them?
O people of the Scripture! Why do you cloak the truth in falsehood, and withhold the truth, when you know?
And a group among the people of the Scripture said: "Believe in what has been sent down to those who have believed, at the start of the day, and disown it at its end, perhaps they will return."
"And give credit only to him who follows your Law."
Say: "The guidance is indeed the guidance of God" — lest anyone be given the like of what you were given, or lest they dispute with you before your Guardian.
Say: "Favor is in the hand of God,
He gives it to whom He wills.
God is Vast, All-Knowing."
He reserves His benevolence for whom He wills.
And God holds the immense favor.
And among the people of the Scripture, there are some who, if you entrust them with a quintal, will return it to you;
and there are some who, if you entrust them with a dinar, do not return it to you unless you keep pressing them for it.
That is because they say: "We have, toward the people without a prior Scripture, no obligation",
and they say the lie against God, knowingly.
But yes: whoever is faithful to his pact and guards himself — God indeed loves those who guard themselves.
Indeed, those who buy, with the pact of God and their oaths, a paltry price — those are the ones who will have no allotment in the last life; God will not speak to them, will not look at them on the Day of Appearance, and will not purify them.
And they will have a painful punishment.
And among them, there is surely a fraction who twist their tongues with the Scripture, so that you might take it for an extract of the Scripture, when it is not part of it,
and they say: "This comes from God",
when it does not come from God,
and they say the lie against God, knowingly.

And if you are killed in the way of God, or if you die, a forgiveness from God and a benevolence are indeed better than what they amass.
And whether you die, or are killed, it is to God that you will be gathered.
It is by a benevolence from God that you have been gentle toward them;
and had you been surly, hard of core, they would certainly have dispersed away from you.
So overlook it for them, ask forgiveness for them, and confer with them on the matter;
and once your decision is made, entrust yourself to God.
God loves those who entrust themselves.
If God helps you, none can overcome you;
and if He abandons you, who then could help you after Him?
And it is to God that the believers should entrust themselves.
It is not for an informant to commit an embezzlement;
and whoever commits an embezzlement will come, on the Day of Appearance, with what he embezzled,
then every Self will be faithfully repaid for what it has earned, without being wronged.
Is he who follows the good pleasure of God, then, like him who incurs the displeasure of God, and whose refuge will be Jahannam?
And what an evil destination!
They have degrees with God.
God is All-Seeing of what they do.
God has indeed graced the believers, by raising up among them a messenger, from among themselves, who recites His signs to them, purifies them, and teaches them the Scripture and the wisdom, though before they were in manifest error.
How then, when misfortune strikes you, after you had caused double that to strike, do you say: "From where, then, does this come?"
Say: "This comes from yourselves."
God is indeed capable of all things.
And what struck you, on the day the two forces met, was with God's permission, and so that He might distinguish the believers, and distinguish those who practiced hypocrisy,
and to whom it was said: "Come, fight in the way of God, or repel";
they said: "If we knew how to fight, we would certainly have followed you."
That day, they were closer to disowning than to faith,
saying with their mouths what was not in their cores.
God knows best what they withhold.
Those who, having stayed seated, said of their brothers: "Had they deferred to us, they would not have been killed."
Say: "Avert death from yourselves, then, if you are veracious."
And do not ever think that those who have been killed in the way of God are dead.
No, they are alive, with their Guardian, provided, rejoicing in what God has given them of His favor, and exulting for those who, remaining behind them, have not yet joined them: no fear upon them, and they will not grieve.
They exult in a blessing from God and a favor, and that God does not let the reward of the believers dissipate, those who responded to God and to the messenger after the wound had struck them.
To those among them who did good and guarded themselves belongs an immense reward.
Those to whom men said: "Men have indeed come together against you, so dread them" — that increased their faith.
And they said: "God suffices us; what an excellent trustee!"
They returned then with a blessing from God and a favor, without any evil having touched them, and they followed the good pleasure of God.
God holds an immense favor.
It is only that Diverter who frightens his allies; do not fear them, then,
but fear Me, if you are believers.
And let not those grieve you who speed into disowning:
they will not harm God at all.
God wants to assign them no share in the last life,
and they will have an immense punishment.
Indeed, those who have bought disowning at the price of faith will not harm God at all, and they will have a painful punishment.
And let those who disown by no means think that the delay We grant them is a good for themselves:
We grant it to them only so that they may increase in transgression,
and they will have a degrading punishment.
It is not for God to forsake the believers in the state you are in, without distinguishing the vile from the wholesome,
and it is not for God to let you pierce what escapes the senses,
but God elects, among His messengers, whom He wills.
So believe in God and in His messengers;
and if you believe and guard yourselves, you will have an immense reward.
And let those who are stingy with what God has given them of His favor by no means think that it is a good for them;
it is rather an ill for them.
They will be encircled by what they were stingy with, on the Day of Appearance.
And to God belongs the inheritance of the heavens and the earth.
And God is Intimately Acquainted with what you do.

God has certainly heard the saying of those who said: "God is poor, and we are rich."
We will record what they said, and their killing of the informants without right, and We will say: "Taste the punishment of the burning fire.
That is for what your hands have prepared; and God is in no way one to wrong the constrained under compulsion."
Those who said: "God has bound us by a pact not to give credit to any messenger, until he brings us an offering that the fire consumes",
say: "Messengers before me indeed came to you with clear proofs, and with what you said; why then did you kill them, if you are veracious?"
If they deny you, messengers have already been denied before you, who had come with clear proofs, the Formularies, and the illuminating Scripture.
Every Self will taste death,
and it is only on the Day of Appearance that you will be faithfully repaid your rewards.
Whoever is pulled away from the Fire and admitted into the Garden has thus triumphed.
And the present life is nothing but a deluding enjoyment.
You will certainly be tested in your goods and in your Selves, and you will certainly hear, from those to whom the Scripture was given before you, and from those who have associated, much nuisance.
But if you are patient and guard yourselves, that is indeed among the matters requiring resolve.
And when God took the solemn engagement of those to whom the Scripture was given: "You will certainly make it clear to mankind, and you will not withhold it"; but they cast it behind their backs, and bought with it a paltry price.
How evil is what they buy!
Do not ever think that those who rejoice in what they have done, and love to be praised for what they did not do — do not ever think that they will evade the punishment.
And they will have a painful punishment.
And to God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth.
And God is capable of all things.
There are surely, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day, signs for the possessors of intelligence, those who remember God, standing, sitting, or lying on their sides, and reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth:
"Our Guardian, You did not create this in vain. Glory be to You!
Protect us, then, from the punishment of the Fire.
Our Guardian, whoever You admit into the Fire, You have indeed covered him with disgrace,
and the wrongdoers have no help.
Our Guardian, we have heard a herald calling to faith: Believe in your Guardian — and we have believed.
Our Guardian, forgive us, then, our offenses, cover for us our evil deeds, and keep us faithfully with the virtuous.
Our Guardian, and grant us what You promised us through Your messengers, and do not cover us with disgrace on the Day of Appearance:
You indeed do not fail Your promise."
Their Guardian answered them, then: "I do not let the deed of one of you who acts dissipate, male or female —
you are of one another.
Those who have emigrated, been expelled from their abodes, been troubled on My way, fought, and been killed, I will certainly cover their evil deeds, and I will certainly admit them into gardens beneath which rivers flow" — a requital from God.
And it is with God that the beautiful requital is found.
Let not the movements of those who disown through the lands delude you.
It is an enjoyment of little worth,
then their refuge will be Jahannam,

and what an evil bed!
But those who have guarded themselves toward their Guardian will have gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally, as a welcome from God.
And what is with God is better for the virtuous.
And among the people of the Scripture, there are surely some who believe in God, in what has been sent down to you, and in what was sent down to them, humble toward God,
not buying, with the signs of God, a paltry price.

Those are the ones who have their reward with their Guardian.
God is indeed swift in reckoning.
O you who have believed! Be patient, surpass in patience, stand ready with firmness, and guard yourselves toward God, perhaps you will succeed.
