Ash-Shura
One Single Law
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent.
Ḥa. Mim. ʿAyn. Sin. Qaf.
حم عسق
Thus God, the All-Powerful, the Wise, reveals to you — as He did to those before you.
كذلك يوحي اليك والى الذين من قبلك الله العزيز الحكيم
To Him belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth,
له ما في السموت وما في الارض
and He is the Most High, the Immense.
وهو العلي العظيم
The heavens are about to be rent asunder from above them,
تكاد السموت يتفطرن من فوقهن
while the Agents glorify their Guardian with praise and ask forgiveness for whoever is on the earth.
والمليكة يسبحون بحمد ربهم ويستغفرون لمن في الارض
Is it not so: God, it is indeed He who is the Most-Forgiving, the Benevolent.
الا ان الله هو الغفور الرحيم
And as for those who take allies besides Him, God is a preserver over them;
والذين اتخذوا من دونه اولياء الله حفيظ عليهم
and you are not for them a trustee.
وما انت عليهم بوكيل
Thus have We revealed to you a flawless Recitation, that you may warn the metropolis of cities and those around it, and warn of the Day of Reunion, about which there is no doubt:
وكذلك اوحينا اليك قرءانا عربيا لتنذر ام القرى ومن حولها وتنذر يوم الجمع لا ريب فيه
a fraction in the Garden,
فريق في الجنة
and a fraction in the Inferno.
وفريق في السعير
And had God willed, He would have made them a single community,
ولو شاء الله لجعلهم امة وحدة
but He admits whom He wills into His benevolence;
ولكن يدخل من يشاء في رحمته
and the wrongdoers have neither custodian nor help.
والظلمون ما لهم من ولي ولا نصير
Or have they taken allies besides Him?
ام اتخذوا من دونه اولياء
Yet it is God who is the Custodian,
فالله هو الولي
and it is He who brings the dead back to life;
وهو يحي الموتى
and He is capable of all things.
وهو على كل شىء قدير
And whatever you differ about, its judgment rests with God.
وما اختلفتم فيه من شىء فحكمه الى الله
That is God, my Guardian;
ذلكم الله ربي
to Him I entrust myself,
عليه توكلت
and to Him I have recourse.
واليه انيب
Originator of the heavens and the earth, He has made for you mates from among yourselves, and mates among the cattle; by this means He scatters you.
فاطر السموت والارض جعل لكم من انفسكم ازوجا ومن الانعم ازوجا يذروكم فيه
Nothing resembles Him,
ليس كمثله شىء
and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.
وهو السميع البصير
To Him belong the charges of the heavens and the earth;
له مقاليد السموت والارض
He extends provision to whom He wills, and measures it,
يبسط الرزق لمن يشاء ويقدر
for He is All-Knowing of all things.
انه بكل شىء عليم
He has ordained for you, in the Law, what He enjoined upon Nuh, what We have revealed to you, and what We enjoined upon Ibrahim, Moussa, and Issa: "Uphold the Law, and do not become divided within it."
شرع لكم من الدين ما وصى به نوحا والذي اوحينا اليك وما وصينا به ابرهيم وموسى وعيسى ان اقيموا الدين ولا تتفرقوا فيه
What you call them to weighs upon the associators.
كبر على المشركين ما تدعوهم اليه
God elects to Himself whom He wills, and guides to Himself whoever has recourse to Him.
الله يجتبي اليه من يشاء ويهدي اليه من ينيب
Yet they became divided only after knowledge had come to them,
وما تفرقوا الا من بعد ما جاءهم العلم
out of iniquity among themselves.
بغيا بينهم
And had it not been for a word that preceded from your Guardian until an appointed term, it would have been decided between them.
ولولا كلمة سبقت من ربك الى اجل مسمى لقضي بينهم
And those who inherited the Scripture after them are surely, about it, in a troubling doubt.
وان الذين اورثوا الكتب من بعدهم لفي شك منه مريب
For this, then, call and stand straight as you have been commanded, and do not follow their emotions.
فلذلك فادع واستقم كما امرت ولا تتبع اهواءهم
And say: "I believe in whatever Scripture God has sent down, and I have been commanded to be just between you.
وقل ءامنت بما انزل الله من كتب وامرت لاعدل بينكم
God is our Guardian and your Guardian;
الله ربنا وربكم
to us our works, to you yours;
لنا اعملنا ولكم اعملكم
there is no argument between us and you;
لا حجة بيننا وبينكم
God will bring us together,
الله يجمع بيننا
and to Him is the destination."
واليه المصير
And those who dispute about God after He has been answered, their argument is void before their Guardian, and upon them is anger,
والذين يحاجون في الله من بعد ما استجيب له حجتهم داحضة عند ربهم وعليهم غضب
and for them a severe punishment.
ولهم عذاب شديد
It is God who has sent down the Scripture bearing truth, and the balance.
الله الذي انزل الكتب بالحق والميزان
And what gives you an idea?
وما يدريك
Perhaps the Hour is near.
لعل الساعة قريب
Those who do not believe in it seek to hasten it,
يستعجل بها الذين لا يومنون بها
while those who have believed are filled with apprehension of it and know that it is the truth.
والذين ءامنوا مشفقون منها ويعلمون انها الحق
Is it not so: those who wrangle about the Hour are surely in far error.
الا ان الذين يمارون في الساعة لفي ضلل بعيد
God is Subtle toward His obedient ones;
الله لطيف بعباده
He provides for whom He wills,
يرزق من يشاء
and He is the Strong, the All-Powerful.
وهو القوي العزيز
Whoever desires the tilth of the last life, We increase his tilth for him;
من كان يريد حرث الءاخرة نزد له في حرثه
and whoever desires the tilth of the present life, We give him a portion of it,
ومن كان يريد حرث الدنيا نوته منها
but he will have no portion in the last life.
وما له في الءاخرة من نصيب
Or do they have associates who have ordained for them, in the Law, what God has not authorized?
ام لهم شركوا شرعوا لهم من الدين ما لم ياذن به الله
And were it not for the word of the Separation, it would have been decided between them;
ولولا كلمة الفصل لقضي بينهم
and the wrongdoers will indeed have a painful punishment.
وان الظلمين لهم عذاب اليم
You will see the wrongdoers apprehensive over what they have earned, while it is about to befall them;
ترى الظلمين مشفقين مما كسبوا وهو واقع بهم
while those who have believed and done sound deeds will be in the flowering meadows of the Gardens,
والذين ءامنوا وعملوا الصلحت في روضات الجنات
they will have whatever they will, with their Guardian:
لهم ما يشاءون عند ربهم
that is the great favor.
ذلك هو الفضل الكبير
That is the good news God gives to His obedient ones who have believed and done sound deeds.
ذلك الذي يبشر الله عباده الذين ءامنوا وعملوا الصلحت
Say: "I ask of you no reward for this, other than affection for one's close kin."
قل لا اسلكم عليه اجرا الا المودة في القربى
And whoever earns a good deed, We increase its beauty for him;
ومن يقترف حسنة نزد له فيها حسنا
for God is Most-Forgiving, Most-Grateful.
ان الله غفور شكور
Or will they say that he has invented a lie against God?
ام يقولون افترى على الله كذبا
Yet if God willed, He would seal your core;
فان يشا الله يختم على قلبك
but God blots out falsehood and makes truth prevail by His words,
ويمح الله البطل ويحق الحق بكلمته
for He is All-Knowing of what the chests contain.
انه عليم بذات الصدور
It is He who accepts repentance from His obedient ones, overlooks evil deeds, and knows what they do.
وهو الذي يقبل التوبة عن عباده ويعفوا عن السيات ويعلم ما تفعلون
And He answers those who have believed and done sound deeds, and gives them more of His favor;
ويستجيب الذين ءامنوا وعملوا الصلحت ويزيدهم من فضله
while those who disown will have a severe punishment.
والكفرون لهم عذاب شديد
And were God to extend provision to His obedient ones, they would commit iniquity on the earth;
ولو بسط الله الرزق لعباده لبغوا في الارض
but He sends down in due measure what He wills,
ولكن ينزل بقدر ما يشاء
for He is, toward His obedient ones, Intimately Acquainted and All-Seeing.
انه بعباده خبير بصير
It is He who sends down the saving rain after they have lost heart, and who deploys His benevolence;
وهو الذي ينزل الغيث من بعد ما قنطوا وينشر رحمته
and He is the Custodian, the Praiseworthy.
وهو الولي الحميد
And among His signs: the creation of the heavens and the earth, and whatever living beings He has spread throughout them;
ومن ءايته خلق السموت والارض وما بث فيهما من دابة
and He is able to bring them together, whenever He wills.
وهو على جمعهم اذا يشاء قدير
And whatever affliction strikes you is because of what your own hands have earned — and He overlooks much.
وما اصبكم من مصيبة فبما كسبت ايديكم ويعفوا عن كثير
You cannot render Him powerless on the earth,
وما انتم بمعجزين في الارض
and you have, besides God, neither custodian nor help.
وما لكم من دون الله من ولي ولا نصير
And among His signs: those that run upon the sea like raised landmarks.
ومن ءايته الجوار في البحر كالاعلم
If He wills, He stills the wind, and they stay becalmed upon its surface — surely in that are signs for every very patient, very grateful one — or He delivers them to disaster because of what they have earned, while overlooking much,
ان يشا يسكن الريح فيظللن رواكد على ظهره ان في ذلك لءايت لكل صبار شكور او يوبقهن بما كسبوا ويعف عن كثير
— and so that those who argue about Our signs may know that they have no escape.
ويعلم الذين يجدلون في ءايتنا ما لهم من محيص
Whatever you have been given is only the enjoyment of the present life;
فما اوتيتم من شىء فمتع الحيوة الدنيا
but what is with God is better and more lasting, for those who believe and entrust themselves to their Guardian;
وما عند الله خير وابقى للذين ءامنوا وعلى ربهم يتوكلون
and for those who avoid major transgressions and indecencies, and who, when angered, forgive;
والذين يجتنبون كبير الاثم والفوحش واذا ما غضبوا هم يغفرون
and for those who answer their Guardian, maintain the Contact, conduct their affairs by conferring among themselves, and spend from what We have provided them;
والذين استجابوا لربهم واقاموا الصلوة وامرهم شورى بينهم ومما رزقنهم ينفقون
and for those who, when iniquity strikes them, help themselves.
والذين اذا اصابهم البغي هم ينتصرون
And the recompense of an evil is an evil equal to it;
وجزوا سيية سيية مثلها
but whoever overlooks and reconciles, his reward is upon God,
فمن عفا واصلح فاجره على الله
for He does not love the wrongdoers.
انه لا يحب الظلمين
And whoever helps himself after having been wronged, no way against such.
ولمن انتصر بعد ظلمه فاوليك ما عليهم من سبيل
The way is open only against those who wrong men and commit iniquity on the earth without right.
انما السبيل على الذين يظلمون الناس ويبغون في الارض بغير الحق
Those are the ones who will have a painful punishment.
اوليك لهم عذاب اليم
And whoever is patient and forgives, that is surely among the matters requiring resolve.
ولمن صبر وغفر ان ذلك لمن عزم الامور
And whoever God leads astray has no custodian after that.
ومن يضلل الله فما له من ولي من بعده
And you will see the wrongdoers, when they see the punishment, saying: "Is there any way to be brought back?"
وترى الظلمين لما راوا العذاب يقولون هل الى مرد من سبيل
And you will see them exposed before it, humble,
وترىهم يعرضون عليها خشعين
looking with a furtive glance, out of humiliation.
من الذل ينظرون من طرف خفي
And those who have believed will say: "The losers are indeed those who have caused the loss of their Selves and of their families on the Day of Appearance."
وقال الذين ءامنوا ان الخسرين الذين خسروا انفسهم واهليهم يوم القيمة
Is it not so: the wrongdoers are in lasting punishment.
الا ان الظلمين في عذاب مقيم
They will have no allies to help them, besides God.
وما كان لهم من اولياء ينصرونهم من دون الله
And whoever God leads astray has no way at all.
ومن يضلل الله فما له من سبيل
Answer your Guardian before there comes, from God, a day that cannot be turned back;
استجيبوا لربكم من قبل ان ياتي يوم لا مرد له من الله
you will have no sanctuary on that Day,
ما لكم من ملجا يوميذ
and you will have no way to disavow.
وما لكم من نكير
If they turn away, We have not sent you as a preserver over them;
فان اعرضوا فما ارسلنك عليهم حفيظا
only the transmission is incumbent upon you.
ان عليك الا البلغ
And when We let the human being taste a benevolence from Us, he rejoices in it;
وانا اذا اذقنا الانسن منا رحمة فرح بها
but if an evil strikes them because of what their hands have prepared, then the human being is indeed greatly given to disowning.
وان تصبهم سيية بما قدمت ايديهم فان الانسن كفور
To God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth;
لله ملك السموت والارض
He creates what He wills;
يخلق ما يشاء
He bestows, on whom He wills, daughters, and He bestows, on whom He wills, sons, or He pairs them, males and females, and He renders barren whom He wills,
يهب لمن يشاء انثا ويهب لمن يشاء الذكور او يزوجهم ذكرانا وانثا ويجعل من يشاء عقيما
for He is All-Knowing, Capable.
انه عليم قدير
It is not for any human that God should speak to him, except by revelation, or from behind a veil, or by sending a messenger who reveals, with His permission, what He wills;
وما كان لبشر ان يكلمه الله الا وحيا او من وراي حجاب او يرسل رسولا فيوحي باذنه ما يشاء
He is indeed the Most High, the Wise.
انه علي حكيم
Thus have We revealed to you an Influx emanating from Our command;
وكذلك اوحينا اليك روحا من امرنا
you had no idea what the Scripture was, nor faith, but We made it a light by which We guide whom We will among Our obedient ones;
ما كنت تدري ما الكتب ولا الايمن ولكن جعلنه نورا نهدي به من نشاء من عبادنا
and you surely guide to a straight path — the path of God, to whom belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth.
وانك لتهدي الى صرط مستقيم صرط الله الذي له ما في السموت وما في الارض
Is it not so: to God all affairs make their way.
الا الى الله تصير الامور
