An-Najm

By the star when it sets: your companion has not strayed, nor has he erred. He utters nothing from emotion — it is nothing but a revelation revealed.

وٱلنجم إذا هوى ما ضل صاحبكم وما غوى وما ينطق عن ٱلهوى إن هو إلا وحي يوحى

One of intense strength, of sound vigor, taught him,

علمه شديد ٱلقوى ذو مرة

then he appeared in his full stature, at the highest horizon.

فٱستوى وهو بٱلأفق ٱلأعلى

Then he drew near, and bent down, until he was at the distance of two bow-lengths, or nearer.

ثم دنا فتدلى فكان قاب قوسين أو أدنى

He then revealed to His obedient one what He revealed.

فأوحى إلى عبده مآ أوحى

The Conscience did not lie about what he saw.

ما كذب ٱلفؤاد ما رأى

Will you then wrangle with him over what he sees?

أفتمرونه على ما يرى

He indeed saw him another time, near the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary — near which lies the Garden of Resort — when the Lote Tree was covered by what covered it.

ولقد رءاه نزلة أخرى عند سدرة ٱلمنتهى عندها جنة ٱلمأوى إذ يغشى ٱلسدرة ما يغشى

The gaze did not deviate, nor did it exceed the measure.

ما زاغ ٱلبصر وما طغى

He indeed saw one of the greatest signs of his Guardian.

لقد رأى من ءايت ربه ٱلكبرى

Do you then see Al-Lat, and Al-Uzza, and Manat, the third, the other? Would the male be for you, and for Him the female?

أفرءيتم ٱللت وٱلعزى ومنوة ٱلثالثة ٱلأخرى ألكم ٱلذكر وله ٱلأنثى

That, then, would be an inequitable division.

تلك إذا قسمة ضيزى

Though guidance has indeed come to them from their Guardian.

ولقد جآءهم من ربهم ٱلهدى

Or does the human being get whatever he wishes?

أم للإنسن ما تمنى

For to God belong the last life and the first.

فلله ٱلءاخرة وٱلأولى

How many Agents are there in the heavens whose mediation avails nothing, except after God has authorized it, for whom He wills and approves.

وكم من ملك في ٱلسموت لا تغني شفعتهم شيا إلا من بعد أن يأذن ٱلله لمن يشآء ويرضى

Those who do not believe in the last life surely give the Agents the attribute of the feminine.

إن ٱلذين لا يؤمنون بٱلءاخرة ليسمون ٱلملئكة تسمية ٱلأنثى

And presumption does not avail at all against the truth.

وإن ٱلظن لا يغني من ٱلحق شيا

So turn away from whoever has turned his back on Our Reminder and wanted nothing but the near life.

فأعرض عن من تولى عن ذكرنا ولم يرد إلا ٱلحيوة ٱلدنيا

and He knows best who has let himself be guided.

وهو أعلم بمن ٱهتدى

And to God belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth, so that He may recompense those who did evil for what they did, and recompense those who did good with the most beautiful.

ولله ما في ٱلسموت وما في ٱلأرض ليجزي ٱلذين أسوا بما عملوا ويجزي ٱلذين أحسنوا بٱلحسنى

He knows best who has guarded himself.

هو أعلم بمن ٱتقى

Have you then seen the one who turned his back, endowed little, then stopped short?

أفرءيت ٱلذي تولى وأعطى قليلا وأكدى

Does he have knowledge of what escapes the senses, so that he sees?

أعنده علم ٱلغيب فهو يرى

Or has he not been informed of what is in the chronicles of Moussa, and of Ibrahim, who was faithful: that no bearer of burden shall bear the burden of another,

أم لم ينبأ بما في صحف موسى وإبرهيم ٱلذي وفى ألا تزر وازرة وزر أخرى

and that the human being will have nothing but what he has endeavoured,

وأن ليس للإنسن إلا ما سعى

and that his effort will soon be shown,

وأن سعيه سوف يرى

then he will be recompensed for it with the most faithful recompense,

ثم يجزىه ٱلجزآء ٱلأوفى

and that to your Guardian is the utmost boundary,

وأن إلى ربك ٱلمنتهى

and that it is He who causes laughter and weeping,

وأنه هو أضحك وأبكى

and that it is He who causes death and gives life,

وأنه هو أمات وأحيا

and that He created the two mates, the male and the female, from a drop when it is emitted,

وأنه خلق ٱلزوجين ٱلذكر وٱلأنثى من نطفة إذا تمنى

and that upon Him rests the other genesis,

وأن عليه ٱلنشأة ٱلأخرى

and that it is He who enriched and granted lasting possession,

وأنه هو أغنى وأقنى

and that it is He who is the Guardian of Sirius,

وأنه هو رب ٱلشعرى

for they themselves did more wrong and were more immoderate.

إنهم كانوا هم أظلم وأطغى

And the overturned one, He cast it down.

وٱلمؤتفكة أهوى

Then what covered it covered it.

فغشىها ما غشى

So which of your Guardian's blessings do you contend about?

فبأى ءالآء ربك تتمارى

This is a warner among the warners of old.

هذا نذير من ٱلنذر ٱلأولى

The Imminent has drawn near.

أزفت ٱلءازفة

None besides God can remove it.

ليس لها من دون ٱلله كاشفة

Is it then this discourse that you marvel at, laughing, not weeping, while you remain heedless?

أفمن هذا ٱلحديث تعجبون وتضحكون ولا تبكون وأنتم سمدون

So prostrate to God, and obey.

فٱسجدوا لله وٱعبدوا
