The Conscience Did Not Lie
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. By the star when it sets: your companion has not strayed, nor has he erred. He utters nothing from emotion — it is nothing but a revelation revealed.
One of intense strength, of sound vigor, taught him,
then he appeared in his full stature, at the highest horizon.
Then he drew near, and bent down, until he was at the distance of two bow-lengths, or nearer.
He then revealed to His obedient one what He revealed.
The Conscience did not lie about what he saw.
Will you then wrangle with him over what he sees?
He saw him, in truth, another time, near the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary — near which lies the Garden of Refuge — when the Lote Tree was covered by what covered it.
The gaze did not deviate, nor did it exceed the measure.
He saw, in truth, one of the greatest signs of his Guardian.
Do you then see Al-Lat, and Al-Uzza, and Manat, the third, the other? Would the male be for you, and for Him the female?
That, then, would be an inequitable division.
They are nothing but attributes you have named, you and your forefathers; God has sent down no authority for them.
They follow nothing but presumption, and what the Selves lean toward.
Though guidance has indeed come to them from their Guardian.
Or does the human being get whatever he wishes?
For to God belong the last life and the first.
How many Agents are there in the heavens whose intercession avails nothing, except after God has authorized it, for whom He wills and approves.
Those who do not believe in the last life surely give the Agents the attribute of the feminine.
Yet they have no knowledge of it.
They follow nothing but presumption.
And presumption does not avail at all against the truth.
So turn away from whoever has turned his back on Our Reminder and wanted nothing but the present life.
That is the extent of their knowledge.
Your Guardian knows best who has strayed from His way,
and He knows best who has let himself be guided.
And to God belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth, so that He may recompense those who did evil for what they did, and recompense those who did good with the best.
Those who avoid the major transgressions and indecencies, except slight lapses.
Your Guardian is indeed vast in forgiveness.
He knows you best, when He brought you into being from the earth, and when you were embryos in your mothers' bellies.
So do not declare yourselves pure.
He knows best who has guarded himself.
Have you then seen the one who turned his back, endowed little, then stopped short?
Does he have knowledge of what escapes the senses, so that he sees?
Or has he not been informed of what is in the chronicles of Moussa, and of Ibrahim, who was faithful: that no bearer of burden shall bear the burden of another,
and that the human being will have nothing but what he has endeavoured,
and that his endeavour will soon be shown,
then he will be recompensed for it with the most faithful recompense,
and that to your Guardian is the utmost boundary,
and that it is He who causes laughter and weeping,
and that it is He who causes death and gives life,
and that He created the two mates, the male and the female, from a drop when it is emitted,
and that upon Him rests the other genesis,
and that it is He who enriched and granted lasting possession,
and that it is He who is the Guardian of Sirius,
and that He annihilated the Aad, the first, and the Thamud, leaving nothing behind, and the people of Nuh before that —
for they themselves did more wrong and were more immoderate.
And the overturned one, He cast it down.
Then what covered it covered it.
So which of your Guardian's blessings do you contend about?
This is a warner among the warners of old.
The Imminent has drawn near.
None besides God can uncover it.
Is it then this discourse that you marvel at, laughing, not weeping, while you remain heedless?
So prostrate to God, and obey.
