Alif. Lam. Mim. Ra.

المر

These are the signs of the Scripture.

تلك ءايت ٱلكتب

And what has been sent down to you from your Guardian is the truth,

وٱلذي أنزل إليك من ربك ٱلحق

God is the One who elevated the heavens without pillars

ٱلله ٱلذي رفع ٱلسموت بغير عمد

that you can see;

ترونها

then He established Himself upon the Edifice;

ثم ٱستوى على ٱلعرش

and He has subjected the sun and the moon,

وسخر ٱلشمس وٱلقمر

each running to an appointed term.

كل يجري لأجل مسمى

He governs the Order,

يدبر ٱلأمر

And it is He who spread out the earth, and placed upon it firm anchors and rivers;

وهو ٱلذي مد ٱلأرض وجعل فيها روسي وأنهرا

and of all the fruits, He placed therein two elements of a pair,

ومن كل ٱلثمرت جعل فيها زوجين ٱثنين

He covers the day with the night.

يغشي ٱليل ٱلنهار

And on the earth, there are neighboring plots, gardens of vines, crops, palms clustered or standing alone, watered by the same water,

وفي ٱلأرض قطع متجورت وجنت من أعنب وزرع ونخيل صنوان وغير صنوان يسقى بمآء وحد

and We favor some of them over others in their fare.

ونفضل بعضها على بعض في ٱلأكل

And if you marvel, marvelous is their saying: "When we are earth, shall we really be in a new creation?"

وإن تعجب فعجب قولهم أءذا كنا تربا أءنا لفي خلق جديد

Those are the ones who disown their Guardian,

أولئك ٱلذين كفروا بربهم

those are the ones who will have shackles around their necks,

وأولئك ٱلأغلل في أعناقهم

They ask you to hasten evil before good, though exemplary precedents have already passed before them.

ويستعجلونك بٱلسيئة قبل ٱلحسنة وقد خلت من قبلهم ٱلمثلت

And your Guardian is surely possessed of forgiveness for mankind, despite their wrongdoing;

وإن ربك لذو مغفرة للناس على ظلمهم

And those who disown say: "Why has a sign not been sent down upon him from his Guardian?"

ويقول ٱلذين كفروا لولآ أنزل عليه ءاية من ربه

You are, yourself, only a warner,

إنمآ أنت منذر

God knows what every female carries, and what the wombs reabsorb and what they increase;

ٱلله يعلم ما تحمل كل أنثى وما تغيض ٱلأرحام وما تزداد

The Knower of what escapes the senses and of what is witnessed,

علم ٱلغيب وٱلشهدة

He has, before him and behind him, relaying watchers, preserving him by God's command.

له معقبت من بين يديه ومن خلفه يحفظونه من أمر ٱلله

God indeed does not change what is in a people until they change what is in themselves;

إن ٱلله لا يغير ما بقوم حتى يغيروا ما بأنفسهم

and when God wants harm for a people, nothing can turn it back,

وإذآ أراد ٱلله بقوم سوءا فلا مرد له

It is He who shows you the lightning, feared and hoped for, and who brings into being the heavy clouds; and the thunder glorifies Him in praise, as do the Agents, out of fear of Him;

هو ٱلذي يريكم ٱلبرق خوفا وطمعا وينشئ ٱلسحاب ٱلثقال ويسبح ٱلرعد بحمده وٱلملئكة من خيفته

To Him belongs the call of truth;

له دعوة ٱلحق

and those they invoke besides Him respond to them in nothing, except like one who stretches out his palms toward water so that it may reach his mouth, never reaching it.

وٱلذين يدعون من دونه لا يستجيبون لهم بشىء إلا كبسط كفيه إلى ٱلمآء ليبلغ فاه وما هو ببلغه

Say: "Who is the Guardian of the heavens and the earth?" Say: "God."

قل من رب ٱلسموت وٱلأرض قل ٱلله

Say: "Have you then taken, besides Him, allies who hold for themselves neither profit nor harm?"

قل أفٱتخذتم من دونه أوليآء لا يملكون لأنفسهم نفعا ولا ضرا

Say: "Are the blind and the seeing equal?

قل هل يستوي ٱلأعمى وٱلبصير

Or are the darknesses and the light equal?"

أم هل تستوي ٱلظلمت وٱلنور

Or have they assigned to God associates who created as He creates, to the point that creation, in their eyes, would lend itself to resemblance?

أم جعلوا لله شركآء خلقوا كخلقه فتشبه ٱلخلق عليهم

Say: "God is the Creator of all things,

قل ٱلله خلق كل شىء

He has sent down from the sky a water, and valleys spilled forth according to their measure, and the torrent carried a swollen froth;

أنزل من ٱلسمآء مآء فسالت أودية بقدرها فٱحتمل ٱلسيل زبدا رابيا

and of what is heated in the fire, seeking an ornament or a use, there is likewise a froth.

ومما يوقدون عليه في ٱلنار ٱبتغآء حلية أو متع زبد مثله

Thus does God multiply truth and falsehood:

كذلك يضرب ٱلله ٱلحق وٱلبطل

the froth goes off as scum,

فأما ٱلزبد فيذهب جفآء

while what is useful to men remains on the earth.

وأما ما ينفع ٱلناس فيمكث في ٱلأرض

To those who respond to their Guardian belongs the best;

للذين ٱستجابوا لربهم ٱلحسنى

and those who do not respond to Him, if they possessed all that is on the earth, and its equivalent with it, they would give it as ransom.

وٱلذين لم يستجيبوا له لو أن لهم ما في ٱلأرض جميعا ومثله معه لٱفتدوا به

Those are the ones who will have the worst of reckonings,

أولئك لهم سوء ٱلحساب

and their refuge will be Jahannam:

ومأوىهم جهنم

Only the possessors of intelligence remember, those who are faithful to God's pact and do not break the solemn engagement, those who join what God has commanded to be joined, dread their Guardian and fear the worst of reckonings, those who were patient seeking the direction of their Guardian, maintained the Contact, spent from what We provided them, secretly and openly, and push back evil with good.

إنما يتذكر أولوا ٱلألبب ٱلذين يوفون بعهد ٱلله ولا ينقضون ٱلميثق وٱلذين يصلون مآ أمر ٱلله به أن يوصل ويخشون ربهم ويخافون سوء ٱلحساب وٱلذين صبروا ٱبتغآء وجه ربهم وأقاموا ٱلصلوة وأنفقوا مما رزقنهم سرا وعلانية ويدرءون بٱلحسنة ٱلسيئة

the Gardens of permanence, which they will enter, along with those who were sound among their ancestors, their spouses, and their descendants,

جنت عدن يدخلونها ومن صلح من ءابآئهم وأزوجهم وذريتهم

"Peace be upon you, because you were patient!"

سلم عليكم بما صبرتم

God extends provision to whom He wills, and measures it:

ٱلله يبسط ٱلرزق لمن يشآء ويقدر

and they rejoice in the present life,

وفرحوا بٱلحيوة ٱلدنيا

And those who disown say: "Why has a sign not been sent down upon him from his Guardian?"

ويقول ٱلذين كفروا لولآ أنزل عليه ءاية من ربه

those who believe and whose cores are calmed by the remembrance of God.

ٱلذين ءامنوا وتطمئن قلوبهم بذكر ٱلله

Thus We have sent you within a community before which other communities have already passed, so that you may recite to them what We have revealed to you, while they disown the All-Benevolent.

كذلك أرسلنك في أمة قد خلت من قبلهآ أمم لتتلوا عليهم ٱلذي أوحينآ إليك وهم يكفرون بٱلرحمن

Say: "He is my Guardian;

قل هو ربي

there is no deity but Him;

لآ إله إلا هو

And even if a Recitation caused the mountains to move by it, or split the earth by it, or made the dead speak by it.

ولو أن قرءانا سيرت به ٱلجبال أو قطعت به ٱلأرض أو كلم به ٱلموتى

But to God belongs the command, entirely:

بل لله ٱلأمر جميعا

have those who believe not yet realized that, if God willed, He would guide all mankind?

أفلم يايس ٱلذين ءامنوا أن لو يشآء ٱلله لهدى ٱلناس جميعا

And those who disown will not cease to be struck, for what they have done, by a sudden crash, or it will alight near their abode, until God's promise comes:

ولا يزال ٱلذين كفروا تصيبهم بما صنعوا قارعة أو تحل قريبا من دارهم حتى يأتي وعد ٱلله

And messengers before you were indeed mocked; I then granted a delay to those who disowned, then I seized them:

ولقد ٱستهزئ برسل من قبلك فأمليت للذين كفروا ثم أخذتهم

Is He who watches over every Self, according to what it has earned?

أفمن هو قآئم على كل نفس بما كسبت

And they have assigned associates to God: say: "Name them!

وجعلوا لله شركآء قل سموهم

Or do you inform Him of what He does not know on the earth, or of an apparent saying?"

أم تنبونه بما لا يعلم في ٱلأرض أم بظهر من ٱلقول

It is nothing of the sort: their plot has been embellished for those who disown, and they have been barred from the way.

بل زين للذين كفروا مكرهم وصدوا عن ٱلسبيل

There is for them a punishment in the present life,

لهم عذاب في ٱلحيوة ٱلدنيا

but the punishment of the last life is even more grievous,

ولعذاب ٱلءاخرة أشق

The example of the Garden promised to those who guard themselves: rivers flow beneath it, its fare is constant, as is its shade —

مثل ٱلجنة ٱلتي وعد ٱلمتقون تجري من تحتها ٱلأنهر أكلها دآئم وظلها

such is the outcome of those who guarded themselves,

تلك عقبى ٱلذين ٱتقوا

And those to whom We gave the Scripture rejoice at what has been sent down to you,

وٱلذين ءاتينهم ٱلكتب يفرحون بمآ أنزل إليك

but there are, among the parties, those who disavow part of it.

ومن ٱلأحزاب من ينكر بعضه

Say: "I have only been commanded to obey God, and to associate nothing with Him:

قل إنمآ أمرت أن أعبد ٱلله ولآ أشرك به

it is to Him that I call,

إليه أدعوا

And thus We have sent it down, as a flawless judgment:

وكذلك أنزلنه حكما عربيا

We have indeed sent messengers before you, and made spouses and descendants for them;

ولقد أرسلنا رسلا من قبلك وجعلنا لهم أزوجا وذرية

and it was not for any messenger to bring a sign, except with God's permission.

وما كان لرسول أن يأتي باية إلا بإذن ٱلله

God blots out what He wills, and He makes firm,

يمحوا ٱلله ما يشآء ويثبت

Have they not seen that We come to the earth, diminishing it from its extremities?

أولم يروا أنا نأتي ٱلأرض ننقصها من أطرافها

God judges, and none can revise His judgment:

وٱلله يحكم لا معقب لحكمه

Those before them indeed plotted, but to God belongs the whole plot:

وقد مكر ٱلذين من قبلهم فلله ٱلمكر جميعا

He knows what every Self earns,

يعلم ما تكسب كل نفس

And those who disown say: "You are not sent."

ويقول ٱلذين كفروا لست مرسلا
