Al-Hajj
Neither Their Flesh nor Their Blood
بسم ٱلله ٱلرحمن ٱلرحيم
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent.
O mankind, guard yourselves toward your Guardian,
يأيها ٱلناس ٱتقوا ربكم
for the quaking of the Hour is an immense thing.
إن زلزلة ٱلساعة شىء عظيم
The Day you see it, every woman with a child in her care will be oblivious of the child she was caring for, and every pregnant one will lay down her bearing, and you will see mankind intoxicated, though they are not intoxicated — but the punishment of God is severe.
يوم ترونها تذهل كل مرضعة عمآ أرضعت وتضع كل ذات حمل حملها وترى ٱلناس سكرى وما هم بسكرى ولكن عذاب ٱلله شديد
And among mankind is he who argues about God without knowledge and follows every rebellious Diverter, for whom it has been inscribed that whoever takes him as an ally, he will misguide him and guide him to the punishment of the Inferno.
ومن ٱلناس من يجدل في ٱلله بغير علم ويتبع كل شيطن مريد كتب عليه أنه من تولاه فأنه يضله ويهديه إلى عذاب ٱلسعير
O mankind, if you are in doubt about the Raising, then indeed We created you from earth, then from a drop, then from a clinging form, then from an embryo, formed and unformed, that We may make things clear to you.
يأيها ٱلناس إن كنتم في ريب من ٱلبعث فإنا خلقنكم من تراب ثم من نطفة ثم من علقة ثم من مضغة مخلقة وغير مخلقة لنبين لكم
And We let rest in the wombs whatever We will until an appointed term,
ونقر في ٱلأرحام ما نشآء إلى أجل مسمى
then We bring you out as a child, that you may then reach your full maturity.
ثم نخرجكم طفلا ثم لتبلغوا أشدكم
And among you is he who is kept faithfully, and among you is he who is returned to the lowliest age, so as to know nothing more after having known.
ومنكم من يتوفى ومنكم من يرد إلى أرذل ٱلعمر لكيلا يعلم من بعد علم شيا
And you see the earth lifeless, but when We send down water upon it, it quivers, swells, and grows every splendid pair.
وترى ٱلأرض هامدة فإذآ أنزلنا عليها ٱلمآء ٱهتزت وربت وأنبتت من كل زوج بهيج
That is because God is the Truth, He brings the dead back to life, He is capable of all things, the Hour is coming — no doubt about it — and God will raise up those who are in the graves.
ذلك بأن ٱلله هو ٱلحق وأنه يحي ٱلموتى وأنه على كل شىء قدير وأن ٱلساعة ءاتية لا ريب فيها وأن ٱلله يبعث من في ٱلقبور
And among mankind is he who argues about God without knowledge, without guidance, and without an illuminating Scripture, folding his side, to lead astray from the way of God.
ومن ٱلناس من يجدل في ٱلله بغير علم ولا هدى ولا كتب منير ثاني عطفه ليضل عن سبيل ٱلله
He has, in the present life, a disgrace,
له في ٱلدنيا خزي
and We will make him taste, on the Day of Appearance, the punishment of the burning fire.
ونذيقه يوم ٱلقيمة عذاب ٱلحريق
That is for what your hands have prepared; and God is in no way one to wrong the constrained under compulsion.
ذلك بما قدمت يداك وأن ٱلله ليس بظلم للعبيد
And among mankind is he who obeys God in a skewed manner: if good betides him, he is calmed by it, but if a trial strikes him, he turns back on his face — losing both the present life and the last life.
ومن ٱلناس من يعبد ٱلله على حرف فإن أصابه خير ٱطمأن به وإن أصابته فتنة ٱنقلب على وجهه خسر ٱلدنيا وٱلءاخرة
That is the manifest loss.
ذلك هو ٱلخسران ٱلمبين
He calls upon, besides God, that which can neither harm him nor benefit him.
يدعوا من دون ٱلله ما لا يضره وما لا ينفعه
That is indeed the far error — he calls upon
ذلك هو ٱلضلل ٱلبعيد يدعوا
one whose harm is nearer than his benefit. What a wretched ally, and what a wretched companion!
لمن ضره أقرب من نفعه لبئس ٱلمولى ولبئس ٱلعشير
Indeed, God admits those who have believed and done sound deeds into gardens beneath which rivers flow,
إن ٱلله يدخل ٱلذين ءامنوا وعملوا ٱلصلحت جنت تجري من تحتها ٱلأنهر
for God does what He wants.
إن ٱلله يفعل ما يريد
Whoever presumes that God will never help him in the present life and the last life, let him extend a link toward the sky, then let him pull back from it, then let him wait and look whether his scheme removes what enrages him.
من كان يظن أن لن ينصره ٱلله في ٱلدنيا وٱلءاخرة فليمدد بسبب إلى ٱلسمآء ثم ليقطع فلينظر هل يذهبن كيده ما يغيظ
Thus have We sent it down as clear signs,
وكذلك أنزلنه ءايت بينت
and because God guides whom He wants.
وأن ٱلله يهدي من يريد
Those who have believed, the Reoriented, the Aspirants, the Helpers, the Magians, and those who associate with God — God will indeed separate between them on the Day of Appearance;
إن ٱلذين ءامنوا وٱلذين هادوا وٱلصبين وٱلنصرى وٱلمجوس وٱلذين أشركوا إن ٱلله يفصل بينهم يوم ٱلقيمة
for God is witness over all things.
إن ٱلله على كل شىء شهيد
Have you not seen that to God prostrate whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth, the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, the living beings, and many among mankind?
ألم تر أن ٱلله يسجد له من في ٱلسموت ومن في ٱلأرض وٱلشمس وٱلقمر وٱلنجوم وٱلجبال وٱلشجر وٱلدوآب وكثير من ٱلناس
And upon many, the punishment has proven true.
وكثير حق عليه ٱلعذاب
And whoever God degrades has none to honor him,
ومن يهن ٱلله فما له من مكرم
for God does what He wills.
إن ٱلله يفعل ما يشآء
These are two opposing parties who have quarreled concerning their Guardian.
هذان خصمان ٱختصموا في ربهم
Those who disown will have clothes of fire cut out for them; boiling water will be poured over their heads, melting what is in their bellies as well as their skins.
فٱلذين كفروا قطعت لهم ثياب من نار يصب من فوق رءوسهم ٱلحميم يصهر به ما في بطونهم وٱلجلود
And for them are maces of iron.
ولهم مقمع من حديد
Every time they wish to come out of it, out of anguish, they will be brought back into it:
كلمآ أرادوا أن يخرجوا منها من غم أعيدوا فيها
"Taste the punishment of the burning fire!"
وذوقوا عذاب ٱلحريق
Indeed, God admits those who have believed and done sound deeds into gardens beneath which rivers flow; they will be ornamented therein with bracelets of gold and pearls,
إن ٱلله يدخل ٱلذين ءامنوا وعملوا ٱلصلحت جنت تجري من تحتها ٱلأنهر يحلون فيها من أساور من ذهب ولؤلؤا
and their garment therein will be silk.
ولباسهم فيها حرير
And they were guided to the wholesome in saying,
وهدوا إلى ٱلطيب من ٱلقول
and they were guided to the path of the Praiseworthy.
وهدوا إلى صرط ٱلحميد
Indeed, those who disown and bar from the way of God and from the inviolable place of prostration, which We made for mankind equally, whether one dwells there or is passing through —
إن ٱلذين كفروا ويصدون عن سبيل ٱلله وٱلمسجد ٱلحرام ٱلذي جعلنه للناس سوآء ٱلعكف فيه وٱلباد
and whoever intends therein a perversion through wrongdoing, We will make him taste a painful punishment.
ومن يرد فيه بإلحاد بظلم نذقه من عذاب أليم
And when We settled for Ibrahim the site of the House: "Do not associate anything with Me,
وإذ بوأنا لإبرهيم مكان ٱلبيت أن لا تشرك بي شيا
and purify My House for those who frequent it, those who maintain it, and those who kneel in service and prostrate in allegiance."
وطهر بيتي للطآئفين وٱلقآئمين وٱلركع ٱلسجود
And proclaim to mankind the Hajj: they will come to you on foot and on every lean mount, coming from every distant, deep-cut path, to witness the benefits for them and to remember the name of God on known days over the livestock beasts He has provided them.
وأذن في ٱلناس بٱلحج يأتوك رجالا وعلى كل ضامر يأتين من كل فج عميق ليشهدوا منفع لهم ويذكروا ٱسم ٱلله في أيام معلومت على ما رزقهم من بهيمة ٱلأنعم
So eat of it and feed the distressed, the poor.
فكلوا منها وأطعموا ٱلبآئس ٱلفقير
Then let them put an end to their unkempt state, be faithful to their vows, and frequent the freed House.
ثم ليقضوا تفثهم وليوفوا نذورهم وليطوفوا بٱلبيت ٱلعتيق
That is so.
ذلك
And whoever magnifies the inviolable things of God, it is better for him with his Guardian.
ومن يعظم حرمت ٱلله فهو خير له عند ربه
And the cattle have been permitted to you, except what is recited to you:
وأحلت لكم ٱلأنعم إلا ما يتلى عليكم
so avoid the filth of idols, and avoid the saying of falsification, wholly turned toward God, associating nothing with Him.
فٱجتنبوا ٱلرجس من ٱلأوثن وٱجتنبوا قول ٱلزور حنفآء لله غير مشركين به
And whoever associates with God, it is as though he had fallen from the sky, and the birds snatch him away, or the wind sweeps him down into a far-off place.
ومن يشرك بٱلله فكأنما خر من ٱلسمآء فتخطفه ٱلطير أو تهوي به ٱلريح في مكان سحيق
That is so.
ذلك
And whoever magnifies the perceptible markers of God — that is indeed part of the guardedness of the cores.
ومن يعظم شعئر ٱلله فإنها من تقوى ٱلقلوب
For you in them are benefits until an appointed term; then their place of delivery is at the freed House.
لكم فيها منفع إلى أجل مسمى ثم محلهآ إلى ٱلبيت ٱلعتيق
And for every community We have assigned a beneficent practice, that they may remember the name of God over the livestock beasts He has provided them.
ولكل أمة جعلنا منسكا ليذكروا ٱسم ٱلله على ما رزقهم من بهيمة ٱلأنعم
So your deity is a single deity.
فإلهكم إله وحد
So to Him alone be true.
فله أسلموا
And give good news to those who are lowly, whose cores tremble when God is remembered, who are patient with what strikes them, who maintain the Contact, and who spend from what We have provided them.
وبشر ٱلمخبتين ٱلذين إذا ذكر ٱلله وجلت قلوبهم وٱلصبرين على مآ أصابهم وٱلمقيمي ٱلصلوة ومما رزقنهم ينفقون
And the offering animals — We have made them for you among the perceptible markers of God; in them is good for you.
وٱلبدن جعلنها لكم من شعئر ٱلله لكم فيها خير
So remember the name of God over them, while they are lined up in rows;
فٱذكروا ٱسم ٱلله عليها صوآف
then when their flanks collapse, eat of them and feed the one who is content without asking and the one who comes forward.
فإذا وجبت جنوبها فكلوا منها وأطعموا ٱلقانع وٱلمعتر
Thus have We subjected them to you, perhaps you will be grateful.
كذلك سخرنها لكم لعلكم تشكرون
Neither their flesh nor their blood accrues to God, but the guardedness from you accrues to Him.
لن ينال ٱلله لحومها ولا دمآؤها ولكن يناله ٱلتقوى منكم
Thus has He subjected them to you, that you may proclaim the greatness of God for having guided you.
كذلك سخرها لكم لتكبروا ٱلله على ما هدىكم
And give good news to those who do good,
وبشر ٱلمحسنين
for God repels from those who believe.
إن ٱلله يدفع عن ٱلذين ءامنوا
God does not love any grand traitor, grand disowner.
إن ٱلله لا يحب كل خوان كفور
Permission is given to those who are being fought, because they have been wronged —
أذن للذين يقتلون بأنهم ظلموا
and God is surely able to help them —
وإن ٱلله على نصرهم لقدير
those who were expelled from their abodes without right, only because they said, "Our Guardian is God."
ٱلذين أخرجوا من ديرهم بغير حق إلآ أن يقولوا ربنا ٱلله
And were it not for God repelling men, some by others, there would have been demolished hermitages, synagogues, places of Contact, and places of prostration wherein the name of God is much remembered.
ولولا دفع ٱلله ٱلناس بعضهم ببعض لهدمت صومع وبيع وصلوت ومسجد يذكر فيها ٱسم ٱلله كثيرا
And God will surely help whoever helps Him —
ولينصرن ٱلله من ينصره
God is surely the Strong, the All-Powerful —
إن ٱلله لقوي عزيز
those who, if We establish them in the land, maintain the Contact, give pure liberality, order what is recognized, and forbid what is disavowed.
ٱلذين إن مكنهم في ٱلأرض أقاموا ٱلصلوة وءاتوا ٱلزكوة وأمروا بٱلمعروف ونهوا عن ٱلمنكر
And to God belongs the outcome of all matters.
ولله عقبة ٱلأمور
And if they deny you, before them the people of Nuh, the Aad, the Thamud, the people of Ibrahim, the people of Lut, and the companions of Madyan denied —
وإن يكذبوك فقد كذبت قبلهم قوم نوح وعاد وثمود وقوم إبرهيم وقوم لوط وأصحب مدين
and Moussa too was denied.
وكذب موسى
So I granted leeway to those who disowned, then I seized them:
فأمليت للكفرين ثم أخذتهم
and how was My disavowal!
فكيف كان نكير
How many a city have I annihilated while it was doing wrong: it now stands empty despite its edifices, with an untended waterhole and a lofty palace!
فكأين من قرية أهلكنها وهي ظالمة فهي خاوية على عروشها وبئر معطلة وقصر مشيد
Have they not traveled through the earth, so as to have cores with which to reason, or ears with which to hear?
أفلم يسيروا في ٱلأرض فتكون لهم قلوب يعقلون بهآ أو ءاذان يسمعون بها
For it is not the sights that are blind, but rather the cores that are within the chests.
فإنها لا تعمى ٱلأبصر ولكن تعمى ٱلقلوب ٱلتي في ٱلصدور
And they ask you to hasten the punishment,
ويستعجلونك بٱلعذاب
though God will never fail His promise,
ولن يخلف ٱلله وعده
for a day with your Guardian is like a thousand years of those they number.
وإن يوما عند ربك كألف سنة مما تعدون
And how many a city to which I granted leeway while it was doing wrong, then I seized it —
وكأين من قرية أمليت لها وهي ظالمة ثم أخذتها
and to Me is the destination.
وإلى ٱلمصير
Say, "O mankind, I am only a clear warner to you."
قل يأيها ٱلناس إنمآ أنا لكم نذير مبين
So those who have believed and done sound deeds will have forgiveness and generous provision.
فٱلذين ءامنوا وعملوا ٱلصلحت لهم مغفرة ورزق كريم
And those who endeavoured against Our signs, seeking to thwart Us, those are the companions of the Blaze.
وٱلذين سعوا في ءايتنا معجزين أولئك أصحب ٱلجحيم
And We did not send before you any messenger or informant except that when he had a wish, the Diverter would cast something into it. God then transcribes what the Diverter casts, and He makes His signs unassailable — God is All-Knowing, Wise — so that what the Diverter casts may be a trial for those in whose cores is a sickness and those whose cores are hardened.
ومآ أرسلنا من قبلك من رسول ولا نبي إلآ إذا تمنى ألقى ٱلشيطن في أمنيته فينسخ ٱلله ما يلقي ٱلشيطن ثم يحكم ٱلله ءايته وٱلله عليم حكيم ليجعل ما يلقي ٱلشيطن فتنة للذين في قلوبهم مرض وٱلقاسية قلوبهم
And surely, the wrongdoers are in a far rupture.
وإن ٱلظلمين لفي شقاق بعيد
And so that those who were given knowledge may know that it is the truth from your Guardian, and believe in it, and their cores grow lowly before it.
وليعلم ٱلذين أوتوا ٱلعلم أنه ٱلحق من ربك فيؤمنوا به فتخبت له قلوبهم
And surely, God guides those who believe to a straight path.
وإن ٱلله لهاد ٱلذين ءامنوا إلى صرط مستقيم
And those who disown will not cease to be in contention about it until the Hour comes upon them unexpectedly, or there comes to them the punishment of a barren day.
ولا يزال ٱلذين كفروا في مرية منه حتى تأتيهم ٱلساعة بغتة أو يأتيهم عذاب يوم عقيم
The dominion, that Day, belongs to God.
ٱلملك يومئذ لله
He will judge between them.
يحكم بينهم
So those who believed and did sound deeds will be in the gardens of bliss.
فٱلذين ءامنوا وعملوا ٱلصلحت في جنت ٱلنعيم
And those who disowned and denied Our signs — those will have a degrading punishment.
وٱلذين كفروا وكذبوا بايتنا فأولئك لهم عذاب مهين
And those who emigrated in the way of God and then were killed or died — God will surely provide them with a fine provision.
وٱلذين هاجروا في سبيل ٱلله ثم قتلوا أو ماتوا ليرزقنهم ٱلله رزقا حسنا
And God is surely the best of providers.
وإن ٱلله لهو خير ٱلرزقين
He will surely admit them to an entrance with which they will be pleased.
ليدخلنهم مدخلا يرضونه
And surely, God is All-Knowing, Forbearing.
وإن ٱلله لعليم حليم
That is so.
ذلك
And whoever pays back in kind to the exact measure of what was done to him, and then suffers iniquity — God will surely help him.
ومن عاقب بمثل ما عوقب به ثم بغي عليه لينصرنه ٱلله
God is surely the One who overlooks, Most-Forgiving.
إن ٱلله لعفو غفور
That is because God makes the night penetrate into the day and the day penetrate into the night, and because God is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.
ذلك بأن ٱلله يولج ٱليل في ٱلنهار ويولج ٱلنهار في ٱليل وأن ٱلله سميع بصير
That is because God is the Truth, and what you invoke besides Him is falsehood, and because God is the Most High, the Great.
ذلك بأن ٱلله هو ٱلحق وأن ما يدعون من دونه هو ٱلبطل وأن ٱلله هو ٱلعلي ٱلكبير
Have you not seen that God sends down water from the sky, and the earth becomes green?
ألم تر أن ٱلله أنزل من ٱلسمآء مآء فتصبح ٱلأرض مخضرة
For God is Subtle, Intimately Acquainted.
إن ٱلله لطيف خبير
To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth.
له ما في ٱلسموت وما في ٱلأرض
And God is surely the Self-Sufficient, the Praiseworthy.
وإن ٱلله لهو ٱلغني ٱلحميد
Have you not seen that God has subjected to you whatever is on the earth, and the vessel which sails through the sea by His command?
ألم تر أن ٱلله سخر لكم ما في ٱلأرض وٱلفلك تجري في ٱلبحر بأمره
And He holds back the sky from toppling upon the earth, except by His permission.
ويمسك ٱلسمآء أن تقع على ٱلأرض إلا بإذنه
God is surely, toward mankind, full of kindness, Benevolent.
إن ٱلله بٱلناس لرءوف رحيم
And it is He who gave you life, then will cause you to die,
وهو ٱلذي أحياكم ثم يميتكم
then will bring you back to life.
ثم يحييكم
The human being is surely a great disowner.
إن ٱلإنسن لكفور
For every community We have assigned a beneficent practice which it carries out.
لكل أمة جعلنا منسكا هم ناسكوه
So let them not contest with you concerning the matter,
فلا ينزعنك في ٱلأمر
and call to your Guardian,
وٱدع إلى ربك
for you are surely upon straight guidance.
إنك لعلى هدى مستقيم
And if they argue with you, say, "God knows best what you do.
وإن جدلوك فقل ٱلله أعلم بما تعملون
God will judge between you on the Day of Appearance concerning that in which you used to differ."
ٱلله يحكم بينكم يوم ٱلقيمة فيما كنتم فيه تختلفون
Do you not know that God knows whatever is in the heaven and the earth?
ألم تعلم أن ٱلله يعلم ما في ٱلسمآء وٱلأرض
That is in a record:
إن ذلك في كتب
that is indeed easy for God.
إن ذلك على ٱلله يسير
And they obey, besides God, that for which He has sent down no authority and of which they have no knowledge.
ويعبدون من دون ٱلله ما لم ينزل به سلطنا وما ليس لهم به علم
And the wrongdoers have no help.
وما للظلمين من نصير
And when Our clear signs are recited to them, you recognize disavowal on the faces of those who disown; they nearly assault those who recite Our signs to them.
وإذا تتلى عليهم ءايتنا بينت تعرف في وجوه ٱلذين كفروا ٱلمنكر يكادون يسطون بٱلذين يتلون عليهم ءايتنا
Say, "Shall I inform you of something worse than that?
قل أفأنبئكم بشر من ذلكم
The Fire, which God has promised to those who disown —
ٱلنار وعدها ٱلله ٱلذين كفروا
and what an evil destination!"
وبئس ٱلمصير
O mankind! An example has been multiplied, so listen to it:
يأيها ٱلناس ضرب مثل فٱستمعوا له
those you invoke besides God will never create a fly, even if they came together for that.
إن ٱلذين تدعون من دون ٱلله لن يخلقوا ذبابا ولو ٱجتمعوا له
And if the fly should rob them of something, they could not recover it from it.
وإن يسلبهم ٱلذباب شيا لا يستنقذوه منه
Weak are the seeker and the sought!
ضعف ٱلطالب وٱلمطلوب
They did not measure God with His true measure.
ما قدروا ٱلله حق قدره
God is surely the Strong, the All-Powerful.
إن ٱلله لقوي عزيز
God chooses messengers from the Agents and from mankind,
ٱلله يصطفي من ٱلملئكة رسلا ومن ٱلناس
for God is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.
إن ٱلله سميع بصير
He knows what is before them and what is behind them.
يعلم ما بين أيديهم وما خلفهم
And it is to God that all matters return.
وإلى ٱلله ترجع ٱلأمور
O you who have believed! Kneel, prostrate, obey your Guardian, and do good, perhaps you will succeed.
يأيها ٱلذين ءامنوا ٱركعوا وٱسجدوا وٱعبدوا ربكم وٱفعلوا ٱلخير لعلكم تفلحون
And strive for God with the striving due to Him.
وجهدوا في ٱلله حق جهاده
It is He who has elected you,
هو ٱجتبىكم
and He has not placed upon you, in the Law, any discomfort —
وما جعل عليكم في ٱلدين من حرج
the doctrine of your father Ibrahim.
ملة أبيكم إبرهيم
It is He who named you those true to Him, before and in this, so that the messenger may be a witness over you, and that you may be witnesses over mankind.
هو سمىكم ٱلمسلمين من قبل وفي هذا ليكون ٱلرسول شهيدا عليكم وتكونوا شهدآء على ٱلناس
So maintain the Contact and give pure liberality,
فأقيموا ٱلصلوة وءاتوا ٱلزكوة
and hold firmly to God:
وٱعتصموا بٱلله
He is your Ally —
هو مولىكم
what an excellent Ally,
فنعم ٱلمولى
and what an excellent Helper!
ونعم ٱلنصير
