Al-Furqan

  • In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Blessed is He who sent down the Criterion upon His obedient one, that he may be a warner to all beings,i 1
  • He to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, who has taken no child and has no associate in the dominion, 2
  • and who created everything and measured it with precision. 2
  • Yet they have taken, besides Him, deities that create nothing and are themselves created, that hold for themselves neither harm nor benefit, and that hold neither death, nor life, nor Awakening.i 3
  • Those who deny say: This is nothing but a fabrication he invented, and another group helped him with it. 4
  • They have thus come with injustice and falsehood, saying: These are legends of the ancients that he has transcribed himself, dictated to him morning and evening. 5
  • Say: He who knows the secret of the heavens and the earth has sent it down. 6
  • He is ever the Forgiving, the benevolent. 6
  • They say: What is with this messenger, that he eats food and walks in the marketplaces? Why has not an Agent been sent down to him to be a warner with him, or why is a treasure not thrown down to him, or why does he not have a garden to eat from!i 8
  • And the unjust say: You follow none but a man under the effect of an illusion. 8
  • See how they multiply examples about you: they have thus gone astray and can no longer find a way. 9
  • Blessed is He who, if He willed, would give you better than that: gardens beneath which rivers flow, and He would give you palaces. 10
  • But rather they have denied the Hour. 11
  • And We have prepared, for whoever denies the Hour, the Blaze. When it sees them from a distant place, they will hear its fury and its roar. 12
  • And when they are thrown into a narrow place therein, bound together, they will call there for their ruin. 13
  • Do not call today for a single ruin, but call for many ruins. 14
  • Say: Is that better, or the garden of everlastingness promised to those who guard themselves? 15
  • It will be for them a reward and a destination. 15
  • They will have therein whatever they desire, abiding therein — 16
  • that is, on the part of your Guardian, a promise that will be called to account. 16
  • And the day when He gathers them, them and what they obeyed besides God, He will say: Was it you who led these obedient ones of Mine astray, or did they themselves stray from the way?i 17
  • They will say: Glory be to You! It was not fitting for us to take, besides You, any protectors; 18
  • but You granted them enjoyment, them and their ancestors, until they forgot the Reminder and became a ruined people. 18
  • They have thus denied you in what you say; they can neither avert [the punishment] nor [give you] help.i 19
  • Whoever among you commits injustice, We will make him taste a great punishment. 19
  • We did not send before you any messenger who did not eat food and walk in the marketplaces. 20
  • And We have made some of you a trial for others. 20
  • Will you endure? 20
  • Your Guardian sees all. 20
  • And those who do not hope for Our meeting say: Why are the Agents not sent down to us, or why do we not see our Guardian!i 21
  • They have greatly swelled with pride within themselves and overstepped all bounds with immense insolence. 21
  • The day they see the Agents, there will be, on that day, no good news for the severed,i 22
  • and they will say: 'A barrier 22
  • that cannot be crossed!' 22
  • And We turned to every deed they had done, and We reduced it to scattered dust. 23
  • The companions of the garden, that day, will have a better abode and a more beautiful resting place. 24
  • And the day when the sky will split apart with the clouds, and the Agents will be sent down, a complete descent,i 25
  • the dominion, that day, in all truth, will belong to the All-Benevolent, 26
  • and it will be, for those who deny, a difficult day. 26
  • And the day the unjust one bites his hands, he will say: Ah, if only I had taken a way with the messenger! Woe to me! If only I had not taken so-and-so as an intimate friend! He led me astray from the Reminder after it had reached me. 29
  • The Diverter is, for the human being, one who always abandons him [at the critical moment].i 29
  • And the messenger will say: O my Guardian, my people have forsaken this Recitation. 30
  • Thus have We given to every prophet an enemy from among the severed. 31
  • Your Guardian suffices as guide and as helper. 31
  • And those who deny say: Why was the Recitation not sent down upon him all at once! 32
  • Thus, so that We may steady your Conscience through it — 32
  • and We conveyed it to you in measured order. 32
  • They bring you no example without Our bringing you the truth and a better explanation. 33
  • Those who will be gathered upon their faces toward Jahannam — those have the worst position and the most astray path. 34
  • We gave Moussa the Scripture, and We placed with him his brother Harun as support.i 35
  • We said: Go, both of you, to the people who have denied Our signs. 36
  • And We destroyed them completely. 36
  • And the people of Nuh, when they denied the messengers, We drowned them and made them a sign for the people.i 37
  • And We have prepared for the unjust a painful punishment. 37
  • And the Recidivists [Aad], and the Depleters [Thamud], and the companions of the Rass, and many generations between those times, 38
  • and to each We multiplied the examples, 39
  • and each one, We destroyed completely. 39
  • Yet they passed by the city upon which had fallen a dreadful rain: 40
  • should they not have seen it? 40
  • But they did not hope for any Awakening.i 40
  • And when they see you, they take you only as an object of mockery: 41
  • Is this the one God has sent as a messenger? He nearly led us astray from our deities, had we not remained firmly attached to them! 42
  • They will know, when they see the punishment, who was most astray from the way. 42
  • Have you seen him who has taken his emotion as his deity? Would you then be his agent? 43
  • Or do you think that most of them hear or reason? 44
  • They are but like cattle — or even further astray from the way. 44
  • Have you not seen your Guardian, how He extends the shadow? 45
  • Had He willed, He would have made it still. 45
  • Then We made the sun its indicator; then We drew it back to Us, an easy withdrawal. 46
  • It is He who made for you the night a garment, sleep a rest, and the day a time of awakening.i 47
  • It is He who sends the winds, scattered, as harbingers before His benevolence,i 48
  • and We sent down from the sky a purifying water, to bring to life through it a dead land, and to give drink from it to many of the livestock and human beings We created. 49
  • We distributed it among them so that they might remember; but most people want nothing but profound denial. 50
  • Had We willed, We would have sent into every city a warner. 51
  • So do not obey those who deny, 52
  • and strive against them through it with a great striving. 52
  • It is He who made the two seas meet: this one sweet, palatable, and that one salty, bitter. 53
  • and He placed between them a barrier and an impassable boundary. 53
  • It is He who, from water, created a human being, and made of him lineage and kinship by marriage. 54
  • Your Guardian is capable of all things. 54
  • And they obey, besides God, that which neither benefits nor harms them; 55
  • and he who denies makes himself, against his Guardian, an ally [of the forces of error]. 55
  • We have not sent you except as a herald of good news and a warner. 56
  • Say: I ask of you no payment for this, except that whoever wishes take a way to his Guardian. 57
  • Take as your agent the Living One who does not die, 58
  • and glorify Him with praise. 58
  • He suffices, He, as the Informed Knower of the wrongs of His servants. 58
  • He who created the heavens and the earth and what is between them in six days, then established Himself upon the Edifice — 59
  • the All-Benevolent. 59
  • So ask about Him an Informed Knower. 59
  • And when it is said to them: Prostrate before the All-Benevolent, they say: What is the All-Benevolent? 60
  • Shall we prostrate before what you order us? And it only increases their aversion. 60
  • Blessed is He who placed in the sky constellations, and placed therein a lamp and a shining moon. 61
  • It is He who made the night and the day a succession, for whoever wants to remember or wants to be grateful. 62
  • And the obedient ones of the All-Benevolent are those who walk upon the earth with humility, and who, when the ignorant address them, say: Peace. 63
  • And those who spend the night prostrating and standing for their Guardian, 64
  • and those who say: Our Guardian, turn away from us the punishment of Jahannam — for its punishment is a persistent torment; 65
  • it is an evil abode and an evil dwelling — 66
  • and those who, when they spend, neither waste nor withhold excessively, standing between the two with just measure, 67
  • and those who do not invoke, with God, any other deity, and who do not kill the Self that God has made sacred, except by right, and who do not commit adultery — 68
  • and whoever does that will meet with grave transgression: the punishment will be doubled for him on the Day of Appearance, and he will abide therein humiliated, except him who repents, believes, and does righteous work — those, God will change their bad deeds into good deeds,i 70
  • for God is ever Forgiving, benevolent. 70
  • And whoever repents and acts righteously truly returns to God, a sincere return. 71
  • And those who do not bear witness to falsehood, and who, when they pass by frivolity, pass with dignity, 72
  • and those who, when reminded by the signs of their Guardian, do not collapse upon them as deaf and blind, 73
  • and those who say: Our Guardian, grant us, from our spouses and our descendants, a rest of the gaze, and make us a model for those who guard themselves — 74
  • those will be rewarded with the high chamber for their endurance, and will be received therein with a greeting and a peace, abiding therein forever. 76
  • What an excellent abode and an excellent dwelling! 76
  • Say: My Guardian would care little for you, were it not for your invocation. 77
  • You have thus denied, and it will become inescapable. 77
