By the Recitation charged with the Reminder,

وٱلقرءان ذي ٱلذكر

no! Those who disown are steeped in might and rupture.

بل ٱلذين كفروا في عزة وشقاق

How many generations did We annihilate before them! They cried out, but it was no longer the time for a way out.

كم أهلكنا من قبلهم من قرن فنادوا ولات حين مناص

And they marveled that a warner should come to them from among themselves,

وعجبوا أن جآءهم منذر منهم

and those who disown said: "This is a worker of illusion, a great liar. Has he made the deities a single deity? This is surely an astonishing thing!"

وقال ٱلكفرون هذا سحر كذاب أجعل ٱلءالهة إلها وحدا إن هذا لشىء عجاب

No, they are in doubt about My Reminder; no, they have not yet tasted My punishment.

بل هم في شك من ذكري بل لما يذوقوا عذاب

Or do they hold the treasuries of the benevolence of your Guardian, the All-Powerful, the Bestower?

أم عندهم خزآئن رحمة ربك ٱلعزيز ٱلوهاب

Then let them ascend by the means!

فليرتقوا في ٱلأسبب

It is but an army among the parties, doomed to defeat.

جند ما هنالك مهزوم من ٱلأحزاب

Those are the parties.

أولئك ٱلأحزاب

Each of them did nothing but deny the messengers, and so My sanction proved true.

إن كل إلا كذب ٱلرسل فحق عقاب

And these await nothing but a single cry, with no respite.

وما ينظر هؤلآء إلا صيحة وحدة ما لها من فواق

And they said: "Our Guardian, hasten for us our share, before the Day of Reckoning."

وقالوا ربنا عجل لنا قطنا قبل يوم ٱلحساب

for he was ever-returning.

إنه أواب

each of them was ever-returning to Him.

كل له أواب

And We strengthened his dominion and gave him wisdom and the address that separates.

وشددنا ملكه وءاتينه ٱلحكمة وفصل ٱلخطاب

and guide us to the middle of the path."

وٱهدنآ إلى سوآء ٱلصرط

"This is my brother; he has ninety-nine ewes, and I have but one ewe. He said: 'Entrust her to me,' and he overpowered me in address."

إن هذآ أخي له تسع وتسعون نعجة ولي نعجة وحدة فقال أكفلنيها وعزني في ٱلخطاب

And Dawud presumed that We had tried him; he sought his Guardian's forgiveness, fell down kneeling, and had recourse to Him.

وظن داود أنما فتنه فٱستغفر ربه وخر راكعا وأناب

and he surely has, with Us, closeness and a fine place of resort.

وإن له عندنا لزلفى وحسن ماب

for those who stray from the way of God will have a severe punishment, for having forgotten the Day of Reckoning."

إن ٱلذين يضلون عن سبيل ٱلله لهم عذاب شديد بما نسوا يوم ٱلحساب

so woe to those who disown, because of the Fire!

فويل للذين كفروا من ٱلنار

Or should We treat those who guard themselves like the depraved?

أم نجعل ٱلمتقين كٱلفجار

Here is a blessed Scripture that We sent down to you, so that they may ponder its signs, and so that the possessors of intelligence may remember.

كتب أنزلنه إليك مبرك ليدبروا ءايته وليتذكر أولوا ٱلألبب

for he was ever-returning!

إنه أواب

When there were displayed to him, in the evening, the standing, well-bred horses, he said: "I have indeed loved the love of the good more than the remembrance of my Guardian," until they were concealed behind the veil.

إذ عرض عليه بٱلعشي ٱلصفنت ٱلجياد فقال إني أحببت حب ٱلخير عن ذكر ربي حتى توارت بٱلحجاب

"Bring them back to me!" And he set about stroking their legs and necks.

ردوها على فطفق مسحا بٱلسوق وٱلأعناق

And We certainly tried Sulayman: We cast upon his throne-seat a body; then he had recourse to Us.

ولقد فتنا سليمن وألقينا على كرسيه جسدا ثم أناب

for You are the Bestower."

إنك أنت ٱلوهاب

So We subjected the wind to him, running at his command, gently, wherever he aimed; and the Diverters, every builder and diver, and others bound together in fetters.

فسخرنا له ٱلريح تجري بأمره رخآء حيث أصاب وٱلشيطين كل بنآء وغواص وءاخرين مقرنين في ٱلأصفاد

"This is Our endowment: grace others with it or retain it, without account to render."

هذا عطآؤنا فٱمنن أو أمسك بغير حساب

And he surely has, with Us, closeness and a fine place of resort.

وإن له عندنا لزلفى وحسن ماب

And remember Our obedient one Ayyub, when he called upon his Guardian: "The Diverter has touched me with fatigue and suffering."

وٱذكر عبدنآ أيوب إذ نادى ربه أني مسني ٱلشيطن بنصب وعذاب

here is cool water for washing and for drinking."

هذا مغتسل بارد وشراب

And We bestowed on him his family, and as many again with them, as a benevolence from Us, and as a reminder for the possessors of intelligence.

ووهبنا له أهله ومثلهم معهم رحمة منا وذكرى لأولي ٱلألبب

for he was ever-returning!

إنه أواب

And remember Our obedient ones Ibrahim, Ishaq, and Yaacoub, endowed with strength and insight.

وٱذكر عبدنآ إبرهيم وإسحق ويعقوب أولي ٱلأيدي وٱلأبصر

We refined them with something refined: the remembrance of the Abode.

إنآ أخلصنهم بخالصة ذكرى ٱلدار

And they are surely, with Us, among the chosen, the best.

وإنهم عندنا لمن ٱلمصطفين ٱلأخيار

and each among the best.

وكل من ٱلأخيار

And those who guard themselves shall surely have a fine place of resort:

وإن للمتقين لحسن ماب

Gardens of permanence, whose gates will be opened for them, reclining therein, calling for abundant savoury fruit and drink.

جنت عدن مفتحة لهم ٱلأبوب متكين فيها يدعون فيها بفكهة كثيرة وشراب

And beside them will be companions of reserved gaze, fertile and of shared stock.

وعندهم قصرت ٱلطرف أتراب

This is what they are promised for the Day of Reckoning.

هذا ما توعدون ليوم ٱلحساب

This is surely Our provision, which knows no end.

إن هذا لرزقنا ما له من نفاد

what an evil bed!

فبئس ٱلمهاد

This — let them taste it: boiling water, and a foul, dark fluid, and others of the same kind, in pairs.

هذا فليذوقوه حميم وغساق وءاخر من شكله أزوج

for they will burn in the Fire!"

إنهم صالوا ٱلنار

What a wretched haven!"

فبئس ٱلقرار

They will say: "Our Guardian, whoever prepared this for us, give him double punishment in the Fire."

قالوا ربنا من قدم لنا هذا فزده عذابا ضعفا في ٱلنار

And they will say: "Why do we not see men we used to number among the wicked?

وقالوا ما لنا لا نرى رجالا كنا نعدهم من ٱلأشرار

Did we take them as objects of scoffing, or have our sights deviated from them?"

أتخذنهم سخريا أم زاغت عنهم ٱلأبصر

This is surely true: such is the quarrel of the people of the Fire.

إن ذلك لحق تخاصم أهل ٱلنار

and there is no deity but God, the One, the Subjugator,

وما من إله إلا ٱلله ٱلوحد ٱلقهار

the All-Powerful, the Great Forgiver."

ٱلعزيز ٱلغفر

Say: "This is immense Information, from which you turn away:

قل هو نبؤا عظيم أنتم عنه معرضون

I had no knowledge of the sublime court when it quarreled;

ما كان لي من علم بٱلملإ ٱلأعلى إذ يختصمون

nothing is revealed to me except that I am a clear warner."

إن يوحى إلى إلآ أنمآ أنا نذير مبين

When your Guardian said to the Agents: "I am about to create a human of clay; when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My Influx, bow before him, prostrating."

إذ قال ربك للملئكة إني خلق بشرا من طين فإذا سويته ونفخت فيه من روحي فقعوا له سجدين

The Agents then prostrated, all together, except Iblis: he grew proud and was among those who disown.

فسجد ٱلملئكة كلهم أجمعون إلآ إبليس ٱستكبر وكان من ٱلكفرين

He said: "O Iblis, what prevented you from prostrating before what I created with My own two hands? Did you grow proud, or were you among the exalted?"

قال يإبليس ما منعك أن تسجد لما خلقت بيدى أستكبرت أم كنت من ٱلعالين

He said: "I am better than him: You created me from fire, and You created him from clay."

قال أنا خير منه خلقتني من نار وخلقته من طين

He said: "Then get out of here, for you are banished, and My curse is indeed upon you until the Day of the Due."

قال فٱخرج منها فإنك رجيم وإن عليك لعنتي إلى يوم ٱلدين

He said: "My Guardian, grant me then a delay until the day they are raised."

قال رب فأنظرني إلى يوم يبعثون

He said: "You are among those granted a delay, until the day of the known moment."

قال فإنك من ٱلمنظرين إلى يوم ٱلوقت ٱلمعلوم

He said: "By Your might, I will surely make them all err, except Your refined obedient ones among them."

قال فبعزتك لأغوينهم أجمعين إلا عبادك منهم ٱلمخلصين

He said: "Here then is the truth — and I speak the truth:

قال فٱلحق وٱلحق أقول

I will surely fill Jahannam with you and with all of those among them who follow you."

لأملأن جهنم منك وممن تبعك منهم أجمعين

Say: "I ask you no reward for this, and I am not one of those who pretend to be what they are not.

قل مآ أسلكم عليه من أجر ومآ أنا من ٱلمتكلفين

It is only a reminder for all beings,

إن هو إلا ذكر للعلمين

and you will surely know its information after a time."

ولتعلمن نبأه بعد حين
