Unless God Wills

Sura 18 · 110 verses

18:1

In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Praise be to God, who has sent down upon His obedient one the Scripture and placed in it no crookedness,

18:2–4

straight — to warn of a severe rigor from Him, to give the believers who do sound deeds the glad tidings that they will have a fine reward, wherein they will remain forever, and to warn those who said: "God has taken a child."

18:5

They have no knowledge of it, nor have their ancestors.

How grave is the word that comes out of their mouths!

They say nothing but a lie.

18:6

Perhaps you will consume yourself with bitterness, following after them, if they do not believe in this discourse.

18:7

We have made what is on the earth an adornment for it, so as to test them: which of them acts best.

18:8

And We shall surely make what is on it an arid outcrop.

18:9

Or did you suppose that the companions of the Cave and of ar-Raqim were, among Our signs, a marvel?

18:10

When the young people resorted to the Cave and said: "Our Guardian, grant us, from Yourself, a benevolence, and shape for us, in our affair, a path of rectitude."

We then closed their ears, in the Cave, for numbered years; then We raised them up to distinguish which of the two parties better enumerated the span for which they had remained.

We relate to you their information in truth:

18:13

they were young people who believed in their Guardian, and We increased them in guidance.

18:14

And We bound their cores, when they stood up and said: "Our Guardian is the Guardian of the heavens and the earth; never shall we call upon any deity besides Him — we would then have said an enormous excess.

18:15

Here is our people, who have taken deities besides Him: why do they not produce, concerning them, a clear authority?

Who then does more wrong than one who invents a lie against God?

18:16

And since you have drawn apart from them and from what they obey besides God, resort to the Cave: your Guardian will deploy over you some of His benevolence and shape for you, in your affair, a support."

18:17

And you would have seen the sun, at its rising, incline away from their cave to the right, and at its setting, leave it with a graze on the left, while they lay in a recess set apart from it.

That is among the signs of God.

Whoever God guides, that is the one who lets himself be guided,

and whoever He leads astray, you will never find for him a protector to make him well-advised.

18:18

And you would have thought them awake, while they were asleep.

18:18

And We turned them to the right and to the left, while their dog lay, paws stretched out, at the threshold.

18:18

Had you seen them, you would surely have turned your back on them in flight, and been filled with terror of them.

Thus We raised them up, so that they might question one another.

18:19

One of them said: "How long have you remained?"

18:19

They said: "We have remained a day, or part of a day."

18:19

They said: "Your Guardian knows best how long you have remained; so raise up one of you, with this money of yours, to the Capital, and let him see which of its foods is purest, and let him bring you provision from it, and let him act with discretion,

and let him make no one sense your presence in any way.

18:20

for if they discovered you, they would banish you, or make you re-enter their doctrine, and you would then never succeed."

Thus We made people stumble upon them, so that they might know that God's promise is true and that the Hour is not in doubt,

when they disputed among themselves over their matter and said: "Build over them a structure" —

their Guardian knows them best.

18:21

Those who won out in the matter said: "We shall surely set up over them a place of prostration."

18:22

They will say: "Three, their dog the fourth,"

18:22

and they will say: "Five, their dog the sixth," flinging what escapes the senses,

18:22

and they will say: "Seven,"

18:22

their dog being the eighth.

18:22

Say: "My Guardian knows best their number";

18:22

none knows them, except a few.

18:22

So do not wrangle about them except in an uncovered wrangling, and do not consult anyone among them about them.

And never say, of a thing: "I will do that tomorrow," unless God wills.

And remember your Guardian when you forget,

and say: "It may be that my Guardian will guide me to a rectitude nearer than this."

18:25

And they remained in their cave three hundred years, and added nine.

18:26

Say: "God knows best how long they remained:

18:26

to Him belongs what escapes the senses in the heavens and on the earth.

How clearly He sees, and how well He hears!

18:26

They have, besides Him, no protector,

18:26

and He associates no one with His judgment."

And recite what has been revealed to you of the Scripture of your Guardian: none can change His words,

18:27

and you will find, besides Him, no recourse.

18:28

And hold yourself, with constancy, alongside those who call upon their Guardian morning and evening, wanting His direction,

18:28

and do not let your eyes pass beyond them, wanting the adornment of the present life;

18:28

and do not defer to one whose core We have made heedless of Our remembrance, who has followed his emotion, and whose affair is excess.

18:29

And say: "The truth comes from your Guardian: so let whoever wants believe, and whoever wants disown."

18:29

We have indeed made ready for the wrongdoers a fire whose enclosure encompasses them.

18:29

And if they call to be rescued, they will be rescued with a water like molten metal, which scalds the faces.

What a detestable drink!

And what an evil resting-place!

Those who have believed and done sound deeds — We do not let the reward of one who does well dissipate.

Those are the ones who will have the Gardens of permanence; beneath them rivers flow; they will be ornamented there with bracelets of gold and will wear green clothes of fine silk and brocade, reclining on adorned couches.

What an excellent requital!

And what an excellent resting-place!

18:32

And multiply for them an example: two men; for one of them We made two gardens of vines, which We surrounded with palm trees, and between which We placed cultivated fields.

Each of the two gardens gave its fare, doing no wrong in any of it,

18:34

and We made a river gush forth between them; and he had fructified wealth.

18:34

He said to his companion, while conversing with him: "I have more goods than you, and am mightier in numbers."

And he entered his garden, wronging himself,

18:36

and said: "I do not presume this will ever fade away, and I do not presume the Hour will rise; and even if I am brought back to my Guardian, I shall surely find something better than this garden as a return."

18:37

His companion said to him, while conversing with him: "Do you disown Him who created you from earth, then from a drop, then fashioned you into a well-formed man?

18:38

As for me, He is God, my Guardian, and I associate no one with my Guardian.

18:39

And why did you not say, upon entering your garden: 'It is what God has willed! No strength except in God!' —

If you see me as having fewer goods and children than you, it may be that my Guardian will grant me better than your garden, and send upon it, from the sky, a reckoned plague, so that it becomes a slippery outcrop, or its water sinks away, so that you will never be able to seek it out."

18:42

And his fructified wealth was encompassed, so that he began turning his palms over in every direction over what he had spent on it, while the garden was empty despite its edifices, and he was saying: "Would that I had associated no one with my Guardian!"

18:43

And he had no battalion to help him besides God,

18:43

and he could not help himself.

18:44

There, protection belongs to God, the Truth.

He is best in requital and best in outcome.

18:45

And multiply for them the example of the present life: it is like water that We send down from the sky; the vegetation of the earth mixes with it, then it becomes chaff scattered by the winds —

God is capable of all things.

18:46

Goods and sons are the adornment of the present life;

18:46

and the enduring, sound deeds are, with your Guardian, better in requital and better in hope.

18:47

And the Day We set the mountains in motion, and you see the earth laid bare, and We gather them, omitting not one of them.

And they will be presented before your Guardian in ranks:

"Here you have come to Us as We created you the first time;

18:48

but you claimed that We would never appoint you a meeting."

18:49

And the register will be set down, and you will see the severed apprehensive of what is in it,

18:49

and they will say: "Woe to us! What is it with this register that it omits nothing, small or great, without enumerating it!"

18:49

And they will find present what they have done,

18:49

and your Guardian wrongs no one.

18:50

And when We said to the Agents: "Prostrate before Adam", they prostrated,

18:50

except Iblis: he was among the Occulted, and he overstepped the command of his Guardian.

18:50

Would you then take him and his descendants as allies besides Me, while they are enemies to you?

18:50

What a detestable exchange for the wrongdoers!

18:51

I did not make them witnesses to the creation of the heavens and the earth, nor to their own creation, and I have never taken those who mislead as an arm.

18:52

And the Day He says: "Call upon My associates whom you used to claim," they will call upon them, but they will not respond to them; and We shall place between them a place of disaster.

And the severed will see the Fire and presume that they are about to plunge into it, finding no way to turn away from it.

18:54

We have indeed diversified, in this Recitation, every kind of example for mankind;

18:54

but the human being is, more than anything, given to arguing.

And nothing prevents mankind from believing, when guidance has come to them, and from asking forgiveness of their Guardian, except that the norm of the ancients should come to them, or the punishment come to them, face to face.

We send the envoys only as bearers of good tidings and warners;

18:56

and those who disown argue by falsehood, to refute the truth by it,

and they have taken My signs, and what they were warned of, in mockery.

And who does more wrong than one who, reminded of the signs of his Guardian, turns away from them, forgetting what his hands have prepared?

18:57

We have placed over their cores coverings, so that they do not understand it, and in their ears a deafness;

and if you call them to guidance, they will never let themselves be guided.

Your Guardian is the Most-Forgiving, the Possessor of benevolence;

were He to seize them for what they have earned, He would have hastened the punishment for them;

18:58

but they have an appointment from which they will find, besides Him, no harbor.

And those cities, We annihilated them when they did wrong, and We set an appointment for their annihilation.

18:60

And when Moussa said to his young companion: "I will not stop until I reach the meeting-place of the two seas, though I journey for a prolonged period."

18:61

When they had reached the meeting-place of the two seas, they forgot their fish, which then took its way into the sea, like a mirage vanishing.

When they had traversed it, he said to his young companion: "Bring us our meal; we have indeed met, on this journey, much fatigue."

18:63

He said: "Did you see? When we resorted to the rock, I indeed forgot the fish —

18:63

and only the Diverter made me forget it, so that I did not think to mention it —

and it took its way into the sea,

18:64

He said: "That is what we were seeking."

18:65

So they drew back upon their own tracks, retracing them, and found an obedient one among Our obedient ones, to whom We had granted a benevolence from Us and to whom We had taught, from Us, a knowledge.

He said: "You will never be able to be patient with me.

18:68

And how would you be patient about what you do not encompass by experience?"

He said: "You will find me, if God wills, patient,

He said: "If then you follow me, do not question me about anything, until I make mention of it to you."

So they set off, until, when they had boarded the boat, he made a hole in it.

18:71

He said: "Have you made a hole in it to drown its occupants? You have come to a very grave thing!"

He said: "Did I not tell you that you would never be able to be patient with me?"

He said: "Do not hold me to account for what I forgot, and do not crush me, in my affair, with hardship."

18:74

So they set off, until, when they met a young boy, he killed him. He said: "Have you killed a pure Self, without it being for another Self? You have come to a horrible thing!"

He said: "Did I not tell you that you would never be able to be patient with me?"

He said: "If I question you about anything after this, do not keep me as a companion; you will then have, from me, an excuse."

18:77

So they set off, until, arriving at the people of a city, they asked them for food; but they refused to receive them as guests. There they found a wall that wanted to topple, and he set it upright.

He said: "Had you wanted, you could have taken a reward for that."

He said: "This is the parting between you and me;

18:78

I will inform you of the prediction of what you had not the capacity to bear with patience.

18:79

As for the boat, it belonged to destitute people working at sea; I wanted to make it defective, for beyond them was a king who was taking every boat by force.

and we wanted their Guardian to give them in exchange one better than him in purity and closer in benevolence.

As for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys of the Capital, and beneath it was a treasure belonging to them;

18:82

their father was sound, and your Guardian wanted them to reach their full maturity and extract their treasure themselves, as a benevolence from your Guardian;

18:82

and I did not do that of my own accord.

That is the prediction of what you could not bear with patience."

And they ask you about the Holder of the Two Acolytes.

Say: "I will recite to you a remembrance of him."

18:84–86

We established him on the earth, and gave him, of everything, a link; he then followed a link, until, having reached the setting-place of the sun, he found it setting in a muddy spring, and found by it a people.

We said: "O Holder of the Two Acolytes, either you punish them, or you adopt toward them a fine conduct."

He said: "As for the one who has done wrong, we shall punish him; then he will be brought back to his Guardian, who will punish him with a horrible punishment.

As for the one who believes and does a sound deed, he will have the most beautiful as recompense,

and we shall speak to him, of our affair, an easy saying."

18:89–91

Then he followed a link, until, having reached the rising-place of the sun, he found it rising on a people for whom We had made, on the near side of it, no shelter. So it was.

And We encompassed by knowledge all that concerned him.

18:92–93

Then he followed a link, until, having reached the space between the two barriers, he found, on the near side of them, a people who could hardly understand any saying.

18:94

They said: "O Holder of the Two Acolytes, Yajuj and Majuj are sowing corruption on the earth; shall we grant you a tribute, on condition that you place between us and them a barrier?"

He said: "That in which my Guardian has established me is better;

so help me with strength, and I will set up between you and them a rampart.

Then, when he had leveled the space between the two sides, he said: "Blow!"

Then, when he had made it fire, he said: "Bring me, that I may pour naphtha over it."

They could not topple it, and they had not the capacity to open a gap in it.

18:98

He said: "This is a benevolence from my Guardian;

18:98

but when the promise of my Guardian comes, He will flatten it — and the promise of my Guardian is true."

And We shall leave them, that Day, surging one against another,

18:99

and the Horn will be blown, and We shall bring them together in a single reunion.

And We shall present, that Day, Jahannam to those who disown, in full view — those whose eyes were under a veil, away from My remembrance, and who could not hear at all.

Have those who disown then thought they could take My obedient ones, besides Me, as allies?

We have indeed made ready Jahannam as a lodging for those who disown.

Those are the ones who disowned the signs of their Guardian and the meeting with Him: their works have collapsed, and We shall not assign them, on the Day of Appearance, any weighing.

Such: their recompense will be Jahannam, for having disowned and having taken My signs and My messengers in mockery.

Those who have believed and done sound deeds will indeed have, as a lodging, the Gardens of the Firdaws, wherein they will abide eternally, not seeking to be shifted from it.

18:109

Say: "If the sea were ink for the words of my Guardian, the sea would be exhausted before the words of my Guardian were exhausted, even if We brought the like of it in reinforcement."

18:110

So whoever hopes for the meeting with his Guardian, let him do a sound deed and associate no one in obedience to his Guardian."
