Al-A'raf

Am I Not Your Guardian?

Sura 7 · 206 verses

7:1

In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Alif. Lam. Mim. Ṣad.

7:2

A Scripture has been sent down to you — let there be no discomfort in your chest because of it — so that you may warn by it, and a reminder for the believers.

Follow what has been sent down to you from your Guardian,

and do not follow allies besides Him.

How little you remember!

How many a city have We annihilated! Our rigor came upon it by night, or while it was taking its midday rest.

Their only cry, when Our rigor came to them, was to say: "We have indeed been wrongdoers."

We will surely question those who were sent to, and We will surely question the envoys,

and We will surely relate to them, with full knowledge,

for We were not absent.

7:8

And the weighing, on that day, will be the truth.

7:8

Those whose balances are heavy — those are the ones who succeed.

7:9

And those whose balances are light — those are the ones who will have caused the loss of their Selves, for having done wrong toward Our signs.

We have indeed established you on the earth, and We have made for you therein means of livelihood.

How little you are grateful!

7:11

We indeed created you, then We gave you form, then We said to the Agents: "Prostrate before Adam," they prostrated,

7:11

except Iblis: he was not among those who prostrated.

7:12

He said: "What prevented you from prostrating, when I commanded you?"

7:12

He said: "I am better than him: You created me from fire, and You created him from clay."

He said: "Then descend from here: it is not for you to act proudly here; go out, then, you are indeed among the diminished."

He said: "Grant me a delay until the day they are raised."

He said: "You are among those granted a delay."

He said: "Since You have let me err, I will surely sit in wait for them on Your straight path, then I will surely come at them, from before them and from behind them, from their right and from their left,

and You will not find most of them grateful."

He said: "Get out of here, reviled, driven away.

Whoever among them follows you — I will surely fill Jahannam with all of you."

7:19

"O Adam! Dwell, you and your spouse, in the Garden, and eat from it wherever you will,

but do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers."

7:20

But the Diverter whispered to them, so as to make appear to them what had been concealed from them of their nakedness,

7:20

and he said: "Your Guardian has forbidden you this tree only to prevent you from becoming two kings, or from being among those who abide eternally."

And he swore to them both: "I am surely, for you two, among the sincere advisors" — thus he brought them down by delusion.

When they had tasted the tree, their nakedness appeared to them, and they both set about stitching leaves from the Garden onto themselves.

And their Guardian called out to them: "Did I not forbid you that tree, and did I not tell you that the Diverter is, for you two, a manifest enemy?"

7:23

They both said: "Our Guardian, we have wronged ourselves; if You do not forgive us and have benevolence on us, we will surely be among the losers."

He said: "Descend,

enemies to one another.

And you will have, on the earth, a haven and an enjoyment for a time."

He said: "There you will live, there you will die, and from there you will be brought forth."

7:26

O sons of Adam! We have sent down for you a garment that covers your nakedness, as well as feathers; and the garment of guardedness —

7:26

that is better.

7:26

That is one of the signs of God — perhaps they will remember.

7:27

O sons of Adam! Let not the Diverter try you as he made your two ancestors go out of the Garden, stripping them of their garment to show them their nakedness.

He indeed sees you, he and his tribe, from where you do not see them.

7:27

We have made the Diverters allies for those who do not believe.

7:28

And when they commit an indecency, they say: "We found our ancestors doing this, and God has ordered it of us."

7:28

Say: "God indeed does not order indecency.

7:28

Will you say about God what you do not know?"

7:29

Say: "My Guardian has ordered equity.

7:29

And maintain your directions toward Him at every moment of prostration,

and invoke Him, devoting the Law exclusively to Him.

As He gave you a beginning, you will be remade."

One fraction, He has guided;

and upon another fraction, error has proven true.

7:30

That is because they took the Diverters as allies besides God, while thinking they are among those who let themselves be guided.

7:31

O sons of Adam! Take your adornment at every moment of prostration, and eat and drink,

but do not waste:

He indeed does not love the wasteful.

7:32

Say: "Who has held as prohibited God's adornment, which He brought forth for His obedient ones, and the wholesome things of provision?"

7:32

Say: "It is, in the present life, for those who have believed — exclusive on the Day of Appearance."

Thus do We detail the signs for a people who know.

Say: "My Guardian has prohibited only indecencies, uncovered or hidden, transgression, iniquity without right, that you associate with God that for which He has sent down no authority, and that you say about God what you do not know."

And to every community a term.

When their term arrives, they cannot adjourn it by an hour,

nor advance it.

7:35

O sons of Adam! If messengers from among yourselves come to you, relating My signs to you — whoever guards himself and becomes sound, no fear upon them, and they will not grieve.

But those who denied Our signs and grew too proud for them — those are the companions of the Fire, they abide therein eternally.

Who then does more wrong than one who invents a lie against God, or denies His signs?

7:37

Those are the ones to whom their portion of the register will accrue,

until Our envoys come to keep them faithfully, and say: "Where are those you used to invoke besides God?" They will say: "They have strayed away from us",

and they will bear witness against themselves that they were disowning.

7:38

He will say: "Enter among communities that have already passed before you, of the Occulted and humans, into the Fire."

Every time a community enters, it curses its sister,

until, having all joined therein, the last of them will say of the first: "Our Guardian, these are the ones who led us astray; give them, then, a double punishment from the Fire."

He will say: "To each the double,

but you do not know."

And the first of them will say to the last: "You then have no advantage over us; taste, then, the punishment, for what you used to earn."

7:40

Indeed, those who denied Our signs and grew too proud for them, the gates of heaven will not open for them, and they will not enter the Garden, until the camel passes through the eye of the needle.

Thus do We recompense the severed.

They will have, from Jahannam, a bed,

and, above them, covers.

Thus do We recompense the wrongdoers.

And those who have believed and done sound deeds — We do not impose upon any Self except its capacity —

those are the companions of the Garden, they abide therein eternally.

And We will have removed from their chests all rancor; rivers will flow beneath them,

and they will say: "Praise be to God, who guided us to this;

we would not have let ourselves be guided, had God not guided us.

The messengers of our Guardian did indeed come with the truth."

And it will be called out to them: "This is the Garden which you have inherited, for what you used to do."

And the companions of the Garden will call out to the companions of the Fire: "We have found true what our Guardian promised us; have you found true what your Guardian promised you?"

They will say: "Yes."

Then a herald will proclaim among them: "The curse of God is upon the wrongdoers, who bar from the way of God, seeking to make it crooked, and who disown the last life."

7:46

And between the two, a veil.

7:46

And on the Heights, men who recognize each one by his marks,

7:46

and they will call out to the companions of the Garden: "Peace be upon you" —

7:46

they themselves have not entered it, though coveting it.

7:47

And when their sights are turned toward the companions of the Fire, they will say: "Our Guardian, do not place us with the wrongdoing people."

And the companions of the Heights will call out to men whom they recognize by their marks: "Your force has availed you nothing, nor your growing proud."

"Are these the ones about whom you swore that God would not make any benevolence accrue to them?"

"Enter the Garden; no fear upon you, and you will not grieve."

And the companions of the Fire will call out to the companions of the Garden: "Make some water overflow upon us, or some of what God has provided you."

They will say: "God has indeed prohibited both to those who disown, those who took their Law for distraction and play, and whom the present life deluded.

Today, then, We forget them, as they forgot the meeting of this day of theirs, and because they used to stubbornly reject Our signs."

7:52

We indeed brought them a Scripture, which We detailed with full knowledge, a guidance and a benevolence for a people who believe.

Do they await anything but its prediction?

On the day its prediction comes, those who had forgotten it before will say: "The messengers of our Guardian did indeed come with the truth; do we have intercessors, that they might intercede for us, or could we be sent back, so that we might act otherwise than we used to act?"

They will have caused the loss of their Selves, and what they used to invent will have strayed away from them.

7:54

Your Guardian is indeed God, who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then established Himself upon the Edifice.

7:54

He covers the day with the night, which pursues it relentlessly — and the sun, the moon, and the stars, subjected to His command.

7:54

Is it not to Him that creation and the Order belong?

7:54

Blessed is God, Guardian of all beings.

7:55

Invoke your Guardian, beseechingly and covertly.

7:55

He indeed does not love those who cross the limits.

7:56

And do not sow corruption on the earth after its being made sound,

7:56

and invoke Him with fear and hope.

7:56

The benevolence of God is indeed near to those who do good.

7:57

It is He who sends the winds, as bearers of good tidings, before His benevolence,

7:57

until, when they are laden with heavy clouds, We drive them toward a dead land: We then send down water from it, and We bring forth by it every kind of fruit.

7:57

Thus will We bring forth the dead — perhaps you will remember.

And the wholesome land, its vegetation comes out with the permission of its Guardian,

while that which is vile brings forth only scantily.

Thus do We diversify the signs for a people who are grateful.

7:59

We indeed sent Nuh to his people, and he said: "O my people! Obey God: you have no other deity than Him.

I indeed fear for you the punishment of an immense day."

The court of his people said: "We see you surely in manifest error."

He said: "O my people! There is no error in me, but I am a messenger from the Guardian of all beings.

I convey to you the messages of my Guardian, I advise you sincerely, and I know, from God, what you do not know.

Do you marvel that a reminder from your Guardian should come to you through a man from among yourselves, that he might warn you, that you might guard yourselves, and that, perhaps, benevolence might be shown to you?"

They denied him; We saved him, and those with him in the vessel,

and We drowned those who had denied Our signs.

They were indeed a blind people.

7:65

And to the Aad, their brother Hud —

7:65

he said: "O my people! Obey God: you have no other deity than Him.

Will you not then guard yourselves?"

The court of his people, those who had disowned, said: "We see you surely in sheer foolishness, and we surely presume you to be among the liars."

He said: "O my people! There is no foolishness in me, but I am a messenger from the Guardian of all beings.

I convey to you the messages of my Guardian, and I am for you a trustworthy advisor.

Do you marvel that a reminder from your Guardian should come to you through a man from among yourselves, that he might warn you?

7:69

And remember that He made you successors after the people of Nuh, and increased you in breadth in creation.

Remember, then, the blessings of God, perhaps you will succeed."

They said: "Have you come to us so that we may obey God alone, and forsake what our ancestors used to obey? Bring us then what you promise us, if you are among the veracious."

He said: "Filth and anger from your Guardian have already befallen you.

Do you argue with me concerning attributes that you and your ancestors have named, for which God has sent down no authority?

Wait then: I am indeed, with you, among those who wait."

7:72

So We saved him, and those with him, by a benevolence from Us, and We cut off to the last remnant those who had denied Our signs: they were not believers.

7:73

And to the Thamud, their brother Salih —

7:73

he said: "O my people! Obey God: you have no other deity than Him.

A clear proof has indeed come to you from your Guardian:

this is the she-camel of God, a sign for you.

So let her be, that she may eat on God's earth,

and touch her with no evil, lest a painful punishment seize you."

And remember that He made you successors after the Aad, and settled you on the earth: in its plains you take palaces, and you carve the mountains into houses.

Remember, then, the blessings of God,

and do not spread disorder on the earth as corrupters.

7:75

The court of his people, those who had grown proud, said to those who had been reduced to weakness, to those among them who had believed: "Do you know that Salih is sent by his Guardian?"

They said: "We indeed believe in what he was sent with."

Those who had grown proud said: "We, for our part, indeed disown what you believe in."

They then hamstrung the she-camel, insolently defied the order of their Guardian,

There is no deity but Him.

He gives life and causes death.

So believe in God and His messenger, the Informant without a prior Scripture, who believes in God and His words,

and follow him, perhaps you will let yourselves be guided."

7:159

And among the people of Moussa, there is a community that guides according to the truth and that, by it, acts with justice.

And We divided them into twelve bloodlines, into communities,

7:160

and We revealed to Moussa, when his people asked him for drink: "Strike the rock with your staff";

and behold, twelve springs welled forth from it:

each group of men knew its drinking place.

And We spread over them the shade of the cloud, and We sent down upon them manna and quails:

"Eat of the wholesome things We have provided you."

They did not wrong Us,

but it was themselves that they wronged.

7:161

And when it was said to them: "Dwell in this city, eat from it wherever you will, say: Unburden us, and enter by the gate, prostrate: We will forgive you your faults.

7:161

We will give more to those who do good."

7:162

But those among them who did wrong substituted a saying other than what had been said to them; We then sent upon them a defilement from the sky, for having done wrong.

7:163

And ask them about the city that was near the sea: when they crossed the limits concerning the Rest, their fish came to them on the day of their Rest, afloat; and on the day they did not keep the Rest, they did not come to them.

Thus did We test them, for having overstepped.

7:164

And when a community among them said: "Why do you exhort a people whom God is going to annihilate, or punish with a severe punishment?"

7:164

They said: "For an excuse before your Guardian, and perhaps they will guard themselves."

7:165

When they forgot what they had been reminded of, We saved those who forbade evil, and We seized the wrongdoers with a harsh punishment, for having overstepped.

Then, when they insolently defied what had been forbidden them, We said to them: "Be apes, rebuffed."

And when your Guardian proclaimed that He would surely raise up against them, until the Day of Appearance, one who would inflict upon them the worst of punishments.

Your Guardian is surely swift in sanction,

and He is surely Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.

And We divided them on the earth into communities:

there are among them those who are sound, and among them those who are less so.

And We tested them with good things and bad things, perhaps they would return.

7:169

Then a posterity succeeded them, who inherited the Scripture, taking the fleeting goods of this lower world, and saying: "It will be forgiven us"; and if a similar good comes to them again, they take it.

7:169

Was not the solemn engagement of the Scripture taken from them, that they would say about God nothing but the truth?

And they have studied what is in it.

But the last abode is better for those who guard themselves.

Will you not then reason?

7:170

And those who hold firmly to the Scripture and maintain the Contact — We indeed do not let the reward of those who make things sound dissipate.

"Take with strength what We have given you, and remember what is in it, perhaps you will guard yourselves."

7:172

And when your Guardian took from the sons of Adam, from their backs, their descendants, and made them bear witness concerning themselves: "Am I not your Guardian?" They said: "Yes, we bear witness!"

Lest they say, on the Day of Appearance: "We were indeed heedless of this", or that they say: "It was our ancestors who, before, associated, and we were only descendants after them.

Would You annihilate us for what the workers of falsehood have done?"

Thus do We detail the signs, and perhaps they will return.

And recite to them the information concerning him to whom We gave Our signs, and who divested himself of them, so that the Diverter pursued him, and he was among the errant.

That is the example of the people who denied Our signs.
