Those Who Tear Away

Sura 79 · 46 verses

79:1–7

In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. By those who tear away, submerging, those who release gently, those who swim, swimming, those who race ahead, racing, those who govern the affair — the Day the first quaking quakes, followed by the one that comes after,

cores, that Day, will tremble, their sights humble.

They will say, "Are we really to be brought back to our former state, once we have become decayed bones?"

They will say, "That, then, would be a losing comeback!" Yet it will be but a single rumbling blast, and there they are, upon the surface of the world.

79:15–16

Has the discourse concerning Moussa reached you? When his Guardian called him in the sanctified valley of Tuwa,

79:17–19

"Go to Fir'awn; he has exceeded all measure. And say to him, 'Would you purify yourself, that I may guide you to your Guardian, so that you may dread Him?'"

79:20–25

So he showed him the greatest sign; but he denied and disobeyed. Then he turned his back, endeavouring, and gathered, and called out, and said, "I am your master, the Most High." So God seized him with the exemplary deterrent of the last life and the first.

Surely, in that is a lesson for whoever dreads.

Are you more difficult to create, or is the sky?

He built it, elevated its vault, and proportioned it; and He darkened its night and brought forth its morning light.

And the earth, after that, He made it hatch forth: He brought forth from it its water and its pasture, and the mountains, He anchored them — as enjoyment for you and your cattle.

Then, when the great Cataclysm comes — the Day the human being will remember what he endeavoured, and the Blaze will be shown to whoever sees,

79:37–39

as for him who exceeded all measure and preferred the present life, then the Blaze will indeed be his resort;

79:40–41

but as for him who feared standing before his Guardian, and forbade the Self emotion, then the Garden will indeed be his resort.

79:42

They ask you about the Hour: when will it drop anchor?

79:43

What have you to do with mentioning it?

79:44

To your Guardian is its utmost boundary.

79:45

You are only the warner of whoever dreads it.

It will seem to them, the Day they see it, as though they had remained no more than an evening, or its morning.
