بسس
Attested forms : بُسَّتِ 1 · بَسًّۭا 1
Core meaning
To reduce a mass to particles that scatter.
Uses
بُسَّتِ, بَسًّا → "to crush to powder" : the verb and its verbal noun express a complete crumbling.
- «وَبُسَّتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ بَسًّۭا» — "and the mountains are crushed to powder" (56:5)
Evidence from the text
The single use is caught in a sequence of three moments: the earth "rocked with a violent rocking", the mountains crushed to powder, then "becoming scattered dust" (56:6). The verb stands between the rocking and the scattering: it does not express a crack, but the mass reduced to grains that nothing holds together any more.
