قضب
Attested forms : قَضْبًۭا 1
Core meaning
To cut a tender shoot; hence the plant that is cut and grows back, fodder.
Uses
قَضْبًا → "fodder" : the greenery mown as fast as it grows back.
- «وَعِنَبًۭا وَقَضْبًۭا وَزَيْتُونًۭا» — "and grapes and fodder, and olives" (80:28)
Evidence from the text
The single use belongs to the list of what God makes grow after pouring water and splitting the earth: grain, grapes, fodder, olives, date-palms, gardens, fruit and pasture, "as a provision for you and your cattle" (80:32). Fodder, cut and grown back, stands on the side of what feeds the cattle, like the pasture that closes the list.
Distinctions
