Sealed myz 4 occurrences

4 occurrences · 4 suras · first occurrence 3:179

Attested forms : يَمِيزَ 1 · لِيَمِيزَ 1 · ٱمْتَٰزُوا۟ 1 · تَمَيَّزُ 1

Core meaning

To separate into distinct parts: to sort the vile from the good, to stand apart, to split.

Uses

  1. يَمِيزَ, لِيَمِيزَ → "to distinguish" : God separates the vile from the good.

    • «حَتَّىٰ يَمِيزَ ٱلْخَبِيثَ مِنَ ٱلطَّيِّبِ» — "without distinguishing the vile from the wholesome" (3:179)
    • «لِيَمِيزَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْخَبِيثَ مِنَ ٱلطَّيِّبِ» — "so that God may distinguish the vile from the wholesome" (8:37)
  2. وَٱمْتَٰزُوا۟ → "to stand apart" : the order given to the severed to separate from the others.

    • «وَٱمْتَٰزُوا۟ ٱلْيَوْمَ أَيُّهَا ٱلْمُجْرِمُونَ» — "And stand apart today, O severed!" (36:59)
  3. تَمَيَّزُ → "to split" : to separate into parts under the thrust of rage.

    • «تَكَادُ تَمَيَّزُ مِنَ ٱلْغَيْظِ» — "almost splitting with fury" (67:8)

Evidence from the text

The same formula occurs twice: distinguishing the vile from the good (3:179, 8:37). God does not forsake the believers in the state they are in; the sorting separates what was together, and in 8:37 the vile is then gathered, "part upon part". In 36:59, separation becomes an order addressed to the severed: "And stand apart today".

In 67:8, Form V says the separation that happens of itself: the Fire boils, almost splitting with fury, like a mass that breaks into parts under the thrust.

Distinctions

  • فصل — to cut between parts; ميز sorts according to the nature of each
  • حصحص — to come out, said of the truth that shows itself
