نون
Attested forms : ٱلنُّونِ 1
Core meaning
The fish, in the name given to Younes: Dhu'n-Nun, "the one of the fish".
Uses
وَذَا ٱلنُّونِ → "Dhu'n-Nun" : Younes, named by the fish that swallowed him.
- «وَذَا ٱلنُّونِ إِذ ذَّهَبَ مُغَٰضِبًۭا» — "And Dhu'n-Nun, when he went off in anger" (21:87)
Evidence from the text
Sole use, 21:87: "And Dhu'n-Nun, when he went off in anger". The account that follows, the call in the darknesses and the avowal of wrongdoing, is that of Younes (37:139-144): the text names the same man by the fish rather than by his name. The translation keeps the name as it is.
