Core meaning
What stands out sharply from its surroundings: the new, which nothing has yet worn; the streak of colour in rock; and, said of God, the magnificence that sets Him apart.
Uses
جَدِيد → "new" : always in خَلْق جَدِيد, "a new creation": the objection of those who doubt they will be made again, and God's power to bring one.
جُدَد → "tracts" : the bands of colour that streak the mountains.
- «وَمِنَ ٱلْجِبَالِ جُدَدٌۢ بِيضٌۭ وَحُمْرٌۭ» — "And in the mountains are tracts, white and red" (35:27)
جَدّ → "the magnificence" : said of God: the greatness that sets Him apart and keeps consort and child far from Him.
- «وَأَنَّهُۥ تَعَٰلَىٰ جَدُّ رَبِّنَا» — "And exalted is the magnificence of our Guardian" (72:3)
Evidence from the text
Eight of the ten uses concern the new creation. Five times it is the objection: turned to earth (13:5, 32:10), to bones (17:49, 17:98), torn apart (34:7), people do not believe they will be made again; the text observes that "they are rather in a blur about a new creation" (50:15). Twice it is the answer: if He willed, God would make them disappear and bring a new creation (14:19, 35:16).
The two other uses keep the sharp line: the white and red tracts that streak the mountain, beside others intensely black (35:27), and the magnificence of God, exalted above any consort and any child (72:3).
