حظر

Core meaning

To fence in, to hold within a limit: the fence, and what is restricted.

Uses

1. مَحْظُور → "restricted" : held within a limit; the text denies it of God's endowment.

   • «وَمَا كَانَ عَطَآءُ رَبِّكَ مَحْظُورًا» — "and your Guardian's endowment is never restricted" (17:20)

2. ٱلْمُحْتَظِر → "pen-builder" : the one who builds the fence of branches in which beasts are penned.

   • «فَكَانُوا۟ كَهَشِيمِ ٱلْمُحْتَظِرِ» — "and they became like the dry twigs of a pen-builder" (54:31)

Evidence from the text

Two uses, one gesture of fencing in. Denied of God, it says that His endowment has no fence: it reaches "to these as to those" (17:20). Applied to matter, it names the builder of the pen where beasts are kept, and what remains of his fence once the cry has struck: dry twigs (54:31).
