Forme attestate :
Core meaning
The one taken alone, with no second: "no one" in negation, "one of" within a group, and, said of God, the singularity that enters no series.
Uses
أَحَد after a negation → "no one", "none" : not a single one: the negation bears on each one.
أَشْرَكَ… أَحَدًا → "to associate no one" : the negation of any second placed beside God.
- «وَلَآ أُشْرِكُ بِرَبِّىٓ أَحَدًۭا» — "and I associate no one with my Guardian" (18:38)
أَحَدُ, إِحْدَىٰ + complement → "one of" : a single one, drawn from a named set.
أَحَدٌ said of God → "Absolute Singularity" : the one with no second and no series, at once defined by what it excludes.
Evidence from the text
The word always isolates a single one. Within a group, it draws one out: one of you whom death reaches (2:180), one of the two daughters who speaks (28:26), one of the associators who asks for protection (9:6). In negation, it refuses even that one: one finds "no one" in the house (24:28), God wrongs no one (18:49).
Sura 112 uses it at both ends. It opens with it to speak of God: "He is God, the Absolute Singularity" (112:1); it closes on the negation: "And none is His counterpart" (112:4). In between, He does not beget and is not begotten: neither offspring nor origin. The singularity of 112:1 is therefore not a number: it is the absence of any second, which the same word denies at the end.
Hence the formula that recurs with أَشْرَكَ: "I associate no one with my Guardian" (18:38, 72:20), "He associates no one with His judgment" (18:26). Each time, أَحَد sets aside the second one would place beside the only one.
Distinctions
- وحد — the unit that is counted: "one", the first of a possible series
- كفو — the equivalent, which 112:4 denies to God
