Core meaning
Proper name of the messenger Nuh; the text ties his account to a call that receives an answer.
Uses
نُوح → "Nuh" : the name is kept as it is, like that of every messenger.
قَوْمَ نُوحٍ → "the people of Nuh" : the people who denied, become an example for those who follow.
- «وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍۢ مِّن قَبْلُ» — "And in the people of Nuh, before that" (51:46)
يَٰنُوحُ → "O Nuh" : the vocative, in the answer to his call (11:46, 11:48) as in the mouth of his people (11:32, 26:116).
- «قِيلَ يَٰنُوحُ ٱهْبِطْ بِسَلَٰمٍۢ مِّنَّا» — "O Nuh, descend with a peace from Us" (11:48)
Evidence from the text
The text ties to the name the pair of call and answer: "And Nuh indeed called upon Us" (37:75), and the answer follows at once, God naming Himself the Responder. The whole account is a series of calls: to his people, night and day, in secret and in public (71:5-9), for "a thousand years, less fifty conventional years" (29:14).
The translation keeps "Nuh", as for every messenger, and leaves it to the account to say his function. No occurrence associates the name with lament or mourning.
