Core meaning
Proper noun. The text reads it from ٱلْيَمّ, "the deep": the one whose destiny passes through the deep, from his birth to the ruin of his oppressor. The translation writes the name alone: "Moussa".
Uses
مُوسَىٰ → "Moussa" : the messenger sent to Fir'awn and to the sons of Israel.
- «وَكَلَّمَ ٱللَّهُ مُوسَىٰ تَكْلِيمًۭا» — "and God spoke to Moussa with a word" (4:164)
Evidence from the text
The eight uses of ٱلْيَمّ in the whole text concern Moussa, without exception. The deep receives the child: "Hurl him into the coffer, then hurl him into the deep" (20:39; also 28:7). The deep swallows Fir'awn and his armies (7:136, 20:78, 28:40, 51:40). The deep finally receives the fabricated deity, scattered by Moussa himself (20:97). The account of his life begins and ends in the deep.
Distinctions
- عيسى — Issa is himself called a word (كَلِمَة, 3:45, 4:171); Moussa receives the word (كَلَّمَ, 4:164)
