Core meaning
Name of Moussa's brother, whom the text presents as his assistant in the mission.
Uses
هَٰرُونَ, هَٰرُونُ → "Harun" : the name kept as it is; the text states his function beside his brother.
- «وَجَعَلْنَا مَعَهُۥٓ أَخَاهُ هَٰرُونَ وَزِيرًۭا» — "We placed with him his brother Harun as an assistant" (25:35)
- «وَٱجْعَل لِّى وَزِيرًۭا مِّنْ أَهْلِى هَٰرُونَ أَخِى» — "appoint for me an assistant from among my own, Harun, my brother" (20:30)
- «وَأَخِى هَٰرُونُ هُوَ أَفْصَحُ مِنِّى لِسَانًۭا» — "but my brother Harun has a clearer tongue than mine" (28:34)
Evidence from the text
The text ties to Harun the word وَزِير, one who bears a share of the load: Moussa asks for him (20:30), God grants him (25:35). In 28:34, Moussa gives the reason: his brother "has a clearer tongue", and he wants him at his side "as a reinforcement who declares me veracious".
Harun speaks in his own name when Moussa is absent: "And Harun had indeed told them before" (20:90). His name is joined to his brother's in the faith of the workers of illusion, "the Guardian of Moussa and Harun" (7:122; 26:48; 20:70), and in the peace granted to them (37:120). In 19:28, Maryam is called "sister of Harun".
The translation keeps the name as it is, "Harun", like that of every messenger.
Distinctions
- وزر — the burden, the load borne; Harun is the وَزِير, the one who shares it.
