Al-Jathiya
Emotion Taken as a Deity
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent.
Ḥa. Mim.
حمٓ
The descent of the Scripture comes from God, the All-Powerful, the Wise.
تَنزِيلُ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْحَكِيمِ
Surely, in the heavens and the earth are signs for the believers.
إِنَّ فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ لَءَايَٰتٍۢ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
And in your creation, and in the living beings He spreads, are signs for a people who have certainty; and in the alternation of night and day, in the provision God sends down from the sky and by which He brings the earth back to life after its death, and in the diversity of the winds, are signs for a people who reason.
وَفِى خَلْقِكُمْ وَمَا يَبُثُّ مِن دَآبَّةٍ ءَايَٰتٌۭ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يُوقِنُونَ وَٱخْتِلَٰفِ ٱلَّيْلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِ وَمَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مِن رِّزْقٍۢ فَأَحْيَا بِهِ ٱلْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهَا وَتَصْرِيفِ ٱلرِّيَٰحِ ءَايَٰتٌۭ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يَعْقِلُونَ
Those are the signs of God, which We recite to you in truth.
تِلْكَ ءَايَٰتُ ٱللَّهِ نَتْلُوهَا عَلَيْكَ بِٱلْحَقِّ
So in what discourse, after God and His signs, will they believe?
فَبِأَىِّ حَدِيثٍۭ بَعْدَ ٱللَّهِ وَءَايَٰتِهِۦ تُؤۡمِنُونَ
Woe to every transgressive distorter, who hears the signs of God recited to him, then persists, growing proud, as if he had not heard them.
وَيْلٌۭ لِّكُلِّ أَفَّاكٍ أَثِيمٍۢ يَسْمَعُ ءَايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ يُصِرُّ مُسْتَكْبِرًۭا كَأَن لَّمْ يَسْمَعْهَا
So give him news of a painful punishment.
فَبَشِّرْهُ بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍۢ
And when he learns something of Our signs, he takes them in mockery.
وَإِذَا عَلِمَ مِنْ ءَايَٰتِنَا شَيْـًٔا ٱتَّخَذَهَا هُزُؤًا
Those are the ones who will have a degrading punishment.
أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌۭ مُّهِينٌۭ
Behind them is Jahannam; and what they earned will not avail them at all, nor will what they took as allies besides God.
مِّن وَرَآئِهِمْ جَهَنَّمُ وَلَا يُغْنِى عَنْهُم مَّا كَسَبُوا۟ شَيْـًۭٔا وَلَا مَا ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ أَوْلِيَآءَ
And they will have an immense punishment.
وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ
This is guidance,
هَٰذَا هُدًۭى
and those who disown the signs of their Guardian will have a punishment of painful defilement.
وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِ رَبِّهِمْ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌۭ مِّن رِّجْزٍ أَلِيمٍ
God is the One who subjected the sea for you, so that vessels may sail upon it by His command, and so that you may seek of His favor, and perhaps you will be grateful.
ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى سَخَّرَ لَكُمُ ٱلْبَحْرَ لِتَجْرِىَ ٱلْفُلْكُ فِيهِ بِأَمْرِهِۦ وَلِتَبْتَغُوا۟ مِن فَضْلِهِۦ وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ
And He subjected for you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, all of it from Him.
وَسَخَّرَ لَكُم مَّا فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًۭا مِّنْهُ
There are surely in that signs for a people who reflect.
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَٰتٍۢ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ
Tell those who believe to forgive those who do not hope for the days of God, so that He may recompense a people for what they used to earn.
قُل لِّلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ يَغْفِرُوا۟ لِلَّذِينَ لَا يَرْجُونَ أَيَّامَ ٱللَّهِ لِيَجْزِىَ قَوْمًۢا بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ
Whoever does a sound deed, it is for himself,
مَنْ عَمِلَ صَٰلِحًۭا فَلِنَفْسِهِۦ
and whoever does ill, it is against himself,
وَمَنْ أَسَآءَ فَعَلَيْهَا
then to your Guardian you will be returned.
ثُمَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكُمْ تُرْجَعُونَ
We indeed gave the Sons of Israel the Scripture, the judgment, and the charge of informing; We provided them with wholesome things and favored them above all beings; and We gave them clear proofs concerning the Command.
وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَا بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ وَٱلْحُكْمَ وَٱلنُّبُوَّةَ وَرَزَقْنَٰهُم مِّنَ ٱلطَّيِّبَٰتِ وَفَضَّلْنَٰهُمْ عَلَى ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ وَءَاتَيْنَٰهُم بَيِّنَٰتٍۢ مِّنَ ٱلْأَمْرِ
They did not differ except after knowledge had come to them,
فَمَا ٱخْتَلَفُوٓا۟ إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا جَآءَهُمُ ٱلْعِلْمُ
out of iniquity among themselves.
بَغْيًۢا بَيْنَهُمْ
Your Guardian will indeed decide between them, on the Day of Appearance, concerning what they used to differ over.
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ يَقْضِى بَيْنَهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ فِيمَا كَانُوا۟ فِيهِ يَخْتَلِفُونَ
Then We placed you upon a legislated way from the Command, so follow it,
ثُمَّ جَعَلْنَٰكَ عَلَىٰ شَرِيعَةٍۢ مِّنَ ٱلْأَمْرِ فَٱتَّبِعْهَا
and do not follow the emotions of those who do not know.
وَلَا تَتَّبِعْ أَهْوَآءَ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
They will not avail you anything against God,
إِنَّهُمْ لَن يُغْنُوا۟ عَنكَ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ شَيْـًۭٔا
and indeed the wrongdoers are allies of one another,
وَإِنَّ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَآءُ بَعْضٍۢ
while God is the protector of those who guard themselves.
وَٱللَّهُ وَلِىُّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ
These are insights for mankind, and guidance and benevolence for a people who have certainty.
هَٰذَا بَصَٰٓئِرُ لِلنَّاسِ وَهُدًۭى وَرَحْمَةٌۭ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يُوقِنُونَ
Or do those who have perpetrated evil deeds think that We will make them like those who have believed and done sound deeds, equal in their life and their death?
أَمْ حَسِبَ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱجْتَرَحُوا۟ ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ أَن نَّجْعَلَهُمْ كَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ سَوَآءٞ مَّحْيَاهُمْ وَمَمَاتُهُمْ
How evil is what they decide!
سَآءَ مَا يَحْكُمُونَ
God created the heavens and the earth in truth,
وَخَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ بِٱلْحَقِّ
and so that every Self may be recompensed for what it earned, and they will not be wronged.
وَلِتُجْزَىٰ كُلُّ نَفْسٍۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ وَهُمْ لَا يُظْلَمُونَ
Have you seen the one who has taken his emotion as his deity? God knowingly led him astray, and sealed his hearing and his core, and placed a cover over his sight. Who then will guide him after God?
أَفَرَءَيْتَ مَنِ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَٰهَهُۥ هَوَىٰهُ وَأَضَلَّهُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ عِلْمٍۢ وَخَتَمَ عَلَىٰ سَمْعِهِۦ وَقَلْبِهِۦ وَجَعَلَ عَلَىٰ بَصَرِهِۦ غِشَٰوَةًۭ فَمَن يَهْدِيهِ مِنۢ بَعْدِ ٱللَّهِ
Will you not then remember?
أَفَلَا تَذَّكَّرُونَ
They said: "There is nothing but our present life; we die and we live, and nothing annihilates us but time."
وَقَالُوا۟ مَا هِىَ إِلَّا حَيَاتُنَا ٱلدُّنْيَا نَمُوتُ وَنَحْيَا وَمَا يُهْلِكُنَآ إِلَّا ٱلدَّهْرُ
They have no knowledge of that,
وَمَا لَهُم بِذَٰلِكَ مِنْ عِلْمٍ
they only presume.
إِنْ هُمْ إِلَّا يَظُنُّونَ
And when Our clear signs are recited to them, their only argument is to say: "Bring back our forefathers, if you are veracious."
وَإِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَايَٰتُنَا بَيِّنَٰتٍۢ مَّا كَانَ حُجَّتَهُمْ إِلَّآ أَن قَالُوا۟ ٱئْتُوا۟ بِـَٔابَآئِنَآ إِن كُنتُمْ صَٰدِقِينَ
Say: "God gives you life, then causes you to die, then He will bring you together on the Day of Appearance, about which there is no doubt,"
قُلِ ٱللَّهُ يُحْيِيكُمْ ثُمَّ يُمِيتُكُمْ ثُمَّ يَجْمَعُكُمْ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِ
but most men do not know.
وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
And to God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth,
وَلِلَّهِ مُلْكُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ
and on the day the Hour rises, that day the workers of falsehood will lose.
وَيَوْمَ تَقُومُ ٱلسَّاعَةُ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ يَخْسَرُ ٱلْمُبْطِلُونَ
You will see every community on its knees,
وَتَرَىٰ كُلَّ أُمَّةٍۢ جَاثِيَةًۭ
every community will be called to its record.
كُلُّ أُمَّةٍۢ تُدْعَىٰٓ إِلَىٰ كِتَٰبِهَا
"Today you are recompensed for what you used to do."
ٱلْيَوْمَ تُجْزَوْنَ مَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ
"This is Our record; it utters about you the truth,"
هَٰذَا كِتَٰبُنَا يَنطِقُ عَلَيْكُم بِٱلْحَقِّ
"We were indeed having transcribed what you used to do."
إِنَّا كُنَّا نَسْتَنسِخُ مَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ
As for those who believed and did sound deeds, their Guardian will admit them into His benevolence;
فَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ فَيُدْخِلُهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ فِى رَحْمَتِهِۦ
that is the manifest triumph.
ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْمُبِينُ
As for those who disowned: "Were not My signs recited to you? But you grew proud and were a severed people."
وَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓا۟ أَفَلَمْ تَكُنْ ءَايَٰتِى تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْكُمْ فَٱسْتَكْبَرْتُمْ وَكُنتُمْ قَوْمًۭا مُّجْرِمِينَ
And when it was said: "Indeed the promise of God is true, and the Hour, no doubt about it," you said: "We have no idea what the Hour is; we only presume, and we are not certain."
وَإِذَا قِيلَ إِنَّ وَعْدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقٌّۭ وَٱلسَّاعَةُ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهَا قُلْتُم مَّا نَدْرِى مَا ٱلسَّاعَةُ إِن نَّظُنُّ إِلَّا ظَنًّۭا وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُسْتَيْقِنِينَ
The evil consequences of what they did will appear to them,
وَبَدَا لَهُمْ سَيِّـَٔاتُ مَا عَمِلُوا۟
and what they used to mock will envelop them.
وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ
It will be said: "Today We forget you, as you forgot the meeting of this your day; your refuge is the Fire, and you will have no help."
وَقِيلَ ٱلْيَوْمَ نَنسَىٰكُمْ كَمَا نَسِيتُمْ لِقَآءَ يَوْمِكُمْ هَٰذَا وَمَأْوَىٰكُمُ ٱلنَّارُ وَمَا لَكُم مِّن نَّٰصِرِينَ
"That is because you took the signs of God in mockery, and the present life deluded you."
ذَٰلِكُم بِأَنَّكُمُ ٱتَّخَذْتُمْ ءَايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ هُزُؤٗا وَغَرَّتْكُمُ ٱلْحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنْيَا
So today they will not be taken out of it, nor will they be asked to make amends.
فَٱلْيَوْمَ لَا يُخْرَجُونَ مِنْهَا وَلَا هُمْ يُسْتَعْتَبُونَ
So to God belongs praise, Guardian of the heavens and Guardian of the earth, Guardian of all beings.
فَلِلَّهِ ٱلْحَمْدُ رَبِّ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَرَبِّ ٱلْأَرْضِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ
And to Him belongs greatness in the heavens and the earth,
وَلَهُ ٱلْكِبْرِيَآءُ فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ
and He is the All-Powerful, the Wise.
وَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ
