The body named with restraint

Observation 2 examples 1 min

The Qur'an speaks of the body and of procreation without a single crude word. The translation keeps that register: it does not replace a restrained word with an anatomical term, nor with a moral term the text does not say.

Sura 86 describes the origin of the human being: "He was created from a gushing fluid, emerging from between the loins [of the man] and the bosom [of the woman]." (86:6-7). The text says "a fluid" and qualifies it by its movement; it names it no other way, and neither does the translation.

For descent, the Qur'an says "loins": "your sons from your own loins" (4:23).

Of Maryam, it says that she "protected her intimacy" (21:91), and again "who protected her intimacy" (66:12). The verb is that of protection, the noun that of intimacy: the translation replaces them neither with an anatomical term nor with "her chastity", which would be an added moral judgement.
