God and oneness 8 / 8
The triad Guardian / Sovereign / Deity
Hypothesis examined: the Qur'an would present God through a fixed triad, رَبّ (Guardian), مَلِك (Sovereign), إِلَٰه (Deity), in that order, and this triad would link the first sura to the last.
The triad does appear, complete and in that order, in 114:1-3: « بِرَبِّ ٱلنَّاسِ مَلِكِ ٱلنَّاسِ إِلَٰهِ ٱلنَّاسِ ».
Yet the test on the whole corpus finds no other occurrence of the same pattern:
- the Fatiha (1:2-4) has « رَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ » and « مَٰلِكِ يَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ », but no إله;
- 23:116 brings the three words together in another order: ٱلْمَلِكُ, then إِلَٰهَ, then رَبُّ;
- 39:6 has رَبُّكُمْ, then ٱلْمُلْكُ (dominion, not the Sovereign), then إِلَٰهَ.
A figure that occurs only once cannot be a rule. The echo between sura 1 and sura 114 (رب and ملك in both) remains a reading observation specific to those two suras.
In the text
بِرَبِّ ٱلنَّاسِ مَلِكِ ٱلنَّاسِ إِلَٰهِ ٱلنَّاسِ“the Guardian of mankind, the Sovereign of mankind, the Deity of mankind”
The only complete occurrence, in order.
رَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ مَٰلِكِ يَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ“Guardian of all beings, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent, Sovereign of the Day of Retribution”
Here, رب and مالك, but no إله: the Fatiha does not contain the triad.
فَتَعَٰلَى ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمَلِكُ ٱلْحَقُّ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ رَبُّ ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱلْكَرِيمِ“Exalted be God, the Sovereign, the Truth!”
The three terms, but in the order Sovereign, Deity, Guardian.
