4:62 Sura 4 · Reduced to Weakness Open the verse →
How then, when misfortune strikes them for what their hands have prepared, do they then come to you, taking oaths by God: "We wanted only good and reconciliation"?
فَكَيْفَ إِذَآ أَصَٰبَتْهُم مُّصِيبَةٌۢ بِمَا قَدَّمَتْ أَيْدِيهِمْ ثُمَّ جَآءُوكَ يَحْلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ إِنْ أَرَدْنَآ إِلَّآ إِحْسَٰنًۭا وَتَوْفِيقًا -

That is the expiation of your oaths, when you take oaths.
ذَٰلِكَ كَفَّٰرَةُ أَيْمَٰنِكُمْ إِذَا حَلَفْتُمْ -

They will take oaths by God: "If we had been able, we would have gone out with you";
وَسَيَحْلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ لَوِ ٱسْتَطَعْنَا لَخَرَجْنَا مَعَكُمْ -

They take oaths by God that they are surely of you, when they are not of you; but they are a people who separate themselves.
وَيَحْلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ إِنَّهُمْ لَمِنكُمْ وَمَا هُم مِّنكُمْ وَلَٰكِنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌۭ يَفْرَقُونَ -

They take oaths to you by God, to satisfy you; but God and His messenger are more worthy that they should seek to satisfy Him, if they are believers.
يَحْلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ لَكُمْ لِيُرْضُوكُمْ وَٱللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥٓ أَحَقُّ أَن يُرْضُوهُ إِن كَانُوا۟ مُؤْمِنِينَ -

They take oaths by God that they said nothing;
يَحْلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ مَا قَالُوا۟ -

They will take oaths to you by God, once you have turned back to them, so that you may turn away from them.
سَيَحْلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ لَكُمْ إِذَا ٱنقَلَبْتُمْ إِلَيْهِمْ لِتُعْرِضُوا۟ عَنْهُمْ -

They take oaths to you, so that you may be satisfied with them; but even if you were satisfied with them, God would indeed not be satisfied with the people of the oversteppers.
يَحْلِفُونَ لَكُمْ لِتَرْضَوْا۟ عَنْهُمْ فَإِن تَرْضَوْا۟ عَنْهُمْ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَرْضَىٰ عَنِ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلْفَٰسِقِينَ -

they will surely take oaths: "We wanted only the best";
وَلَيَحْلِفُنَّ إِنْ أَرَدْنَآ إِلَّا ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ -

Have you not seen those who ally themselves with a people with whom God is angry? They are neither of you nor of them, and they take oaths upon falsehood knowingly.
أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِينَ تَوَلَّوْا۟ قَوْمًا غَضِبَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِم مَّا هُم مِّنكُمْ وَلَا مِنْهُمْ وَيَحْلِفُونَ عَلَى ٱلْكَذِبِ وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ -

The day God raises them all, they will take oaths to Him as they take oaths to you, thinking they stand on something.
يَوْمَ يَبْعَثُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ جَمِيعًۭا فَيَحْلِفُونَ لَهُۥ كَمَا يَحْلِفُونَ لَكُمْ وَيَحْسَبُونَ أَنَّهُمْ عَلَىٰ شَىْءٍ -

And do not defer to every contemptible oath-monger, stinging slanderer, spreader of slander, hinderer of good, crosser of limits, transgressor, coarse and, moreover, a social parasite — because he has goods and sons. When Our signs are recited to him, he says: "Legends of the ancients!"
وَلَا تُطِعْ كُلَّ حَلَّافٍۢ مَّهِينٍ هَمَّازٍۢ مَّشَّآءٍۭ بِنَمِيمٍۢ مَّنَّاعٍۢ لِّلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ عُتُلٍّۭ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ زَنِيمٍ أَن كَانَ ذَا مَالٍۢ وَبَنِينَ إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ ءَايَٰتُنَا قَالَ أَسَٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
