Hud

A Scripture whose signs have been made unassailable, then detailed, from a Wise, Intimately Acquainted One: "Obey none but God; I am for you, from Him, a warner and a bearer of good tidings; ask forgiveness of your Guardian, then turn back to Him: He will let you enjoy a fine enjoyment until an appointed term, and grant every possessor of favor his favor.

كتب احكمت ءايته ثم فصلت من لدن حكيم خبير الا تعبدوا الا الله انني لكم منه نذير وبشير وان استغفروا ربكم ثم توبوا اليه يمتعكم متعا حسنا الى اجل مسمى ويوت كل ذي فضل فضله

To God is your return,

الى الله مرجعكم

Is it not so: they indeed fold their chests to hide from Him.

الا انهم يثنون صدورهم ليستخفوا منه

Is it not that, when they cover themselves with their clothes, He knows what they keep secret and what they disclose?

الا حين يستغشون ثيابهم يعلم ما يسرون وما يعلنون

There is no living being on earth whose provision does not fall to God; He knows its haven and its repository:

وما من دابة في الارض الا على الله رزقها ويعلم مستقرها ومستودعها

And it is He who created the heavens and the earth in six days, while His Edifice was founded upon the water, so as to test you: which of you acts best.

وهو الذي خلق السموت والارض في ستة ايام وكان عرشه على الماء ليبلوكم ايكم احسن عملا

And if We delay for them the punishment until a numbered term, they will surely say: "What holds it in suspense?"

ولين اخرنا عنهم العذاب الى امة معدودة ليقولن ما يحبسه

Is it not that, the day it comes to them, it will not be turned away from them,

الا يوم ياتيهم ليس مصروفا عنهم

And if We let him taste a blessing after hardship has touched him, he will surely say: "The bad deeds have departed from me":

ولين اذقنه نعماء بعد ضراء مسته ليقولن ذهب السيات عني

Perhaps you will leave part of what is revealed to you, and your chest will tighten because of it, since they say: "Why has a treasure not been sent down upon him, or why does an Agent not come with him!"

فلعلك تارك بعض ما يوحى اليك وضايق به صدرك ان يقولوا لولا انزل عليه كنز او جاء معه ملك

You are, yourself, only a warner;

انما انت نذير

Or will they say: "He has invented it"?

ام يقولون افترىه

If they do not answer you, then know that it has been sent down only with God's knowledge, and that there is no deity but Him.

فالم يستجيبوا لكم فاعلموا انما انزل بعلم الله وان لا اله الا هو

those are the ones who will have, in the last life, nothing but the Fire;

اوليك الذين ليس لهم في الءاخرة الا النار

what they did therein will have collapsed,

وحبط ما صنعوا فيها

Is he who relies on a clear proof from his Guardian, with a witness from Him coming in his wake?

افمن كان على بينة من ربه ويتلوه شاهد منه

And before him, the Scripture of Moussa, as a reference and a benevolence.

ومن قبله كتب موسى اماما ورحمة

Those are the ones who believe in it.

اوليك يومنون به

And whoever among the parties disowns it has the Fire as his appointment:

ومن يكفر به من الاحزاب فالنار موعده

so do not contend about it:

فلا تك في مرية منه

And who does more wrong than one who invents a lie against God?

ومن اظلم ممن افترى على الله كذبا

Those are the ones who, on earth, will not be able to render Him powerless, and who will have, besides God, no ally:

اوليك لم يكونوا معجزين في الارض وما كان لهم من دون الله من اولياء

the punishment will be doubled for them.

يضعف لهم العذاب

Those who have believed, done sound deeds, and lowered themselves before their Guardian: those are the companions of the Garden,

ان الذين ءامنوا وعملوا الصلحت واخبتوا الى ربهم اوليك اصحب الجنة

The example of the two fractions is like the blind and the deaf, and the seeing and the hearing:

مثل الفريقين كالاعمى والاصم والبصير والسميع

are they equal in example?

هل يستويان مثلا

We have indeed sent Nuh to his people:

ولقد ارسلنا نوحا الى قومه

obey none but God;

ان لا تعبدوا الا الله

The court of those who disowned, among his people, said: "We see you only as a human like us, and we see that only those who are, among us, the lowliest, followed you, at first glance.

فقال الملا الذين كفروا من قومه ما نرىك الا بشرا مثلنا وما نرىك اتبعك الا الذين هم اراذلنا بادي الراي

O my people, I do not ask you for any goods for this:

ويقوم لا اسلكم عليه مالا

my reward is incumbent only upon God.

ان اجري الا على الله

And I am not of those who chase away those who believe: they will indeed meet their Guardian;

وما انا بطارد الذين ءامنوا انهم ملقوا ربهم

O my people, who would help me against God, if I chased them away?

ويقوم من ينصرني من الله ان طردتهم

And I do not tell you that I hold God's treasuries, nor that I know what escapes the senses, nor that I am an Agent;

ولا اقول لكم عندي خزاين الله ولا اعلم الغيب ولا اقول اني ملك

and I do not say, of those your eyes hold in contempt, that God will grant them no good:

ولا اقول للذين تزدري اعينكم لن يوتيهم الله خيرا

God knows best what is in their Selves.

الله اعلم بما في انفسهم

And my counsel will be of no use to you, even were I to wish to counsel you, if God wants to make you err:

ولا ينفعكم نصحي ان اردت ان انصح لكم ان كان الله يريد ان يغويكم

He is your Guardian,

هو ربكم

Or will they say: "He has invented it"?

ام يقولون افترىه

And it was revealed to Nuh that none of your people will believe anymore, except those who have already believed:

واوحي الى نوح انه لن يومن من قومك الا من قد ءامن

And craft the vessel, under Our eyes and by Our revelation,

واصنع الفلك باعيننا ووحينا

He was crafting the vessel; and every time a court of his people passed by him, it scoffed at him.

ويصنع الفلك وكلما مر عليه ملا من قومه سخروا منه

Until, when Our command came and the oven began to boil over, We said: "Carry into it, of every kind, two elements of a pair, and your family, except him against whom the saying has already preceded, and those who have believed."

حتى اذا جاء امرنا وفار التنور قلنا احمل فيها من كل زوجين اثنين واهلك الا من سبق عليه القول ومن ءامن

And he said: "Embark therein: in the name of God be its course and its mooring.

وقال اركبوا فيها بسم الله مجرىها ومرسىها

And it sailed with them amid waves like mountains.

وهي تجري بهم في موج كالجبال

He said: "I shall take refuge on a mountain, which will safeguard me from the water."

قال ساوي الى جبل يعصمني من الماء

He said: "There is no safeguard today against God's command, except for him to whom He shows benevolence."

قال لا عاصم اليوم من امر الله الا من رحم

And it was said: "O earth, swallow your water! O sky, hold back!"

وقيل يارض ابلعي ماءك ويسماء اقلعي

And the water subsided, the matter was decided, and it established itself on al-Judi.

وغيض الماء وقضي الامر واستوت على الجودي

And Nuh called upon his Guardian and said: "My Guardian, my son is indeed of my family, and Your promise is truth,

ونادى نوح ربه فقال رب ان ابني من اهلي وان وعدك الحق

He said: "O Nuh, he is indeed not of your family:

قال ينوح انه ليس من اهلك

it is an unsound deed.

انه عمل غير صلح

So do not ask Me about what you have no knowledge of:

فلا تسلن ما ليس لك به علم

He said: "My Guardian, I indeed take refuge with You from asking You about what I have no knowledge of,

قال رب اني اعوذ بك ان اسلك ما ليس لي به علم

It was said: "O Nuh, descend with a peace from Us, and blessings upon you and upon communities from those who are with you;

قيل ينوح اهبط بسلم منا وبركت عليك وعلى امم ممن معك

Those are pieces of information about what escapes the senses, which We reveal to you:

تلك من انباء الغيب نوحيها اليك

you did not know them, neither you nor your people, before this.

ما كنت تعلمها انت ولا قومك من قبل هذا

So be patient:

فاصبر

And to the Aad, their brother Hud:

والى عاد اخاهم هودا

he said: "O my people, obey God: you have no other deity than Him;

قال يقوم اعبدوا الله ما لكم من اله غيره

O my people, I do not ask you for any reward for this:

يقوم لا اسلكم عليه اجرا

my reward is incumbent only upon Him who originated me.

ان اجري الا على الذي فطرني

We only say that one of our deities has struck you with evil."

ان نقول الا اعترىك بعض ءالهتنا بسوء

and bear witness that I am quit of what you associate besides Him:

واشهدوا اني بريء مما تشركون من دونه

I indeed entrust myself to God, my Guardian and yours:

اني توكلت على الله ربي وربكم

there is no living being that He does not hold by the forelock.

ما من دابة الا هو ءاخذ بناصيتها

If you turn your backs, I have already conveyed to you that with which I was sent to you;

فان تولوا فقد ابلغتكم ما ارسلت به اليكم

and my Guardian will substitute in your place another people, without your harming Him in anything:

ويستخلف ربي قوما غيركم ولا تضرونه شيا

And they were pursued, in the present life, by a curse, and on the Day of Appearance too:

واتبعوا في هذه الدنيا لعنة ويوم القيمة

is it not so: the Aad indeed disowned their Guardian.

الا ان عادا كفروا ربهم

And to the Thamud, their brother Salih:

والى ثمود اخاهم صلحا

he said: "O my people, obey God: you have no other deity than Him.

قال يقوم اعبدوا الله ما لكم من اله غيره

It is He who brought you into being from the earth and made you live long therein: so ask His forgiveness, then turn back to Him:

هو انشاكم من الارض واستعمركم فيها فاستغفروه ثم توبوا اليه

He said: "O my people, do you see? If I rely on a clear proof from my Guardian, and He has granted me, from Him, a benevolence, who then would help me against God if I disobeyed Him?

قال يقوم ارءيتم ان كنت على بينة من ربي وءاتىني منه رحمة فمن ينصرني من الله ان عصيته

O my people, this is the she-camel of God, a sign for you:

ويقوم هذه ناقة الله لكم ءاية

so let her be, that she may eat on God's earth,

فذروها تاكل في ارض الله

But they hamstrung her. He then said: "Enjoy yourselves in your abode for three days:

فعقروها فقال تمتعوا في داركم ثلثة ايام

When Our command came, We saved Salih and those who had believed with him, by a benevolence from Us, and from the disgrace of that day.

فلما جاء امرنا نجينا صلحا والذين ءامنوا معه برحمة منا ومن خزي يوميذ

And the Cry seized those who had done wrong, so that they found themselves, in their abodes, lying, still, as if they had never dwelt there.

واخذ الذين ظلموا الصيحة فاصبحوا في ديرهم جثمين كان لم يغنوا فيها

Is it not so: the Thamud indeed disowned their Guardian.

الا ان ثمودا كفروا ربهم

And Our messengers indeed came to Ibrahim with the good tidings: they said: "Peace!"

ولقد جاءت رسلنا ابرهيم بالبشرى قالوا سلما

He said: "Peace!"

قال سلم

But when he saw that their hands did not reach it, he found them strange and felt a fear of them.

فلما رءا ايديهم لا تصل اليه نكرهم واوجس منهم خيفة

They said: "Do not fear:

قالوا لا تخف

And his wife, standing, began to laugh;

وامراته قايمة فضحكت

We then gave her the glad tidings of Ishaq,

فبشرنها باسحق

She said: "Woe is me! Shall I bear a child, when I am old, and here is my husband, an old man?

قالت يويلتى ءالد وانا عجوز وهذا بعلي شيخا

They said: "Do you marvel at God's command?

قالوا اتعجبين من امر الله

God's benevolence and His blessings be upon you, people of the house!

رحمت الله وبركته عليكم اهل البيت

"O Ibrahim, turn away from this:

يابرهيم اعرض عن هذا

the command of your Guardian has already come,

انه قد جاء امر ربك

And his people came to him, rushing, though they had previously been committing evil deeds.

وجاءه قومه يهرعون اليه ومن قبل كانوا يعملون السيات

He said: "O my people, here are my daughters: they are cleaner for you; so guard yourselves toward God, and do not disgrace me concerning my guests:

قال يقوم هولاء بناتي هن اطهر لكم فاتقوا الله ولا تخزون في ضيفي

They said: "O Lut, we are indeed the messengers of your Guardian: they will never reach you.

قالوا يلوط انا رسل ربك لن يصلوا اليك

So depart with your family, at a time of the night, and let none of you turn around, except your wife.

فاسر باهلك بقطع من اليل ولا يلتفت منكم احد الا امراتك

What strikes them will also strike her.

انه مصيبها ما اصابهم

Their appointment is the morning:

ان موعدهم الصبح

When Our command came, We made its top its bottom, and rained upon it stones of formed clay, layered, marked with your Guardian:

فلما جاء امرنا جعلنا عليها سافلها وامطرنا عليها حجارة من سجيل منضود مسومة عند ربك

And to Madyan, their brother Shu'ayb:

والى مدين اخاهم شعيبا

he said: "O my people, obey God: you have no other deity than Him,

قال يقوم اعبدوا الله ما لكم من اله غيره

and do not diminish the measure nor the balance.

ولا تنقصوا المكيال والميزان

O my people, give the measure and the balance faithfully, with equity,

ويقوم اوفوا المكيال والميزان بالقسط

What remains with God is better for you, if you are believers;

بقيت الله خير لكم ان كنتم مومنين

They said: "O Shu'ayb, does your Contact command you that we leave what our ancestors obeyed, or that we stop doing with our goods what we wish?

قالوا يشعيب اصلوتك تامرك ان نترك ما يعبد ءاباونا او ان نفعل في امولنا ما نشوا

He said: "O my people, do you see? If I rely on a clear proof from my Guardian, and He has provided me, from Him, with a fine provision...

قال يقوم ارءيتم ان كنت على بينة من ربي ورزقني منه رزقا حسنا

And I do not want to contradict you by doing myself what I forbid you:

وما اريد ان اخالفكم الى ما انهىكم عنه

I only want to make things sound, as much as I can;

ان اريد الا الاصلح ما استطعت

and my success rests only with God:

وما توفيقي الا بالله

to Him I entrust myself,

عليه توكلت

O my people, let not your rupture with me cause what struck the people of Nuh, or the people of Hud, or the people of Salih, to strike you;

ويقوم لا يجرمنكم شقاقي ان يصيبكم مثل ما اصاب قوم نوح او قوم هود او قوم صلح

Ask forgiveness of your Guardian, then turn back to Him:

واستغفروا ربكم ثم توبوا اليه

He said: "O my people, does my kindred then weigh more with you than God, whom you have relegated behind your back?

قال يقوم ارهطي اعز عليكم من الله واتخذتموه وراءكم ظهريا

O my people, act according to your position; I too am acting:

ويقوم اعملوا على مكانتكم اني عمل

you will soon know to whom a punishment will come that disgraces him, and who is a liar.

سوف تعلمون من ياتيه عذاب يخزيه ومن هو كذب

So watch:

وارتقبوا

And the Cry seized those who had done wrong, so that they found themselves, in their abodes, lying, still, as if they had never dwelt there.

واخذت الذين ظلموا الصيحة فاصبحوا في ديرهم جثمين كان لم يغنوا فيها

We have indeed sent Moussa with Our signs and manifest authority, to Fir'awn and his court; but they followed the command of Fir'awn,

ولقد ارسلنا موسى بايتنا وسلطن مبين الى فرعون وملايه فاتبعوا امر فرعون

He will advance at the head of his people on the Day of Appearance, and bring them to arrive at the Fire:

يقدم قومه يوم القيمة فاوردهم النار

And they were pursued, here, by a curse, and on the Day of Appearance too:

واتبعوا في هذه لعنة ويوم القيمة

And We did not wrong them, but they wronged themselves:

وما ظلمنهم ولكن ظلموا انفسهم

their deities, which they invoked besides God, availed them nothing when your Guardian's command came,

فما اغنت عنهم ءالهتهم التي يدعون من دون الله من شىء لما جاء امر ربك

Such is the seizure of your Guardian, when He seizes the cities while they are doing wrong:

وكذلك اخذ ربك اذا اخذ القرى وهي ظلمة

There is surely in that a sign for whoever fears the punishment of the last life:

ان في ذلك لءاية لمن خاف عذاب الءاخرة

that is a day on which mankind will be brought together,

ذلك يوم مجموع له الناس

The day it comes, no Self will speak without His permission:

يوم يات لا تكلم نفس الا باذنه

As for those who will be wretched, they will be in the Fire, wherein they will have rattling and sobbing, wherein they will abide eternally, as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except what your Guardian wills:

فاما الذين شقوا ففي النار لهم فيها زفير وشهيق خلدين فيها ما دامت السموت والارض الا ما شاء ربك

And as for those who will be happy, they will be in the Garden, wherein they will abide eternally, as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except what your Guardian wills:

واما الذين سعدوا ففي الجنة خلدين فيها ما دامت السموت والارض الا ما شاء ربك

So do not contend about what those people obey:

فلا تك في مرية مما يعبد هولاء

they obey only as their ancestors obeyed before.

ما يعبدون الا كما يعبد ءاباوهم من قبل

We have indeed given Moussa the Scripture, and there was divergence about it;

ولقد ءاتينا موسى الكتب فاختلف فيه

and had it not been for a word that preceded from your Guardian, it would have been decided between them;

ولولا كلمة سبقت من ربك لقضي بينهم

And to each, your Guardian will surely faithfully repay their works:

وان كلا لما ليوفينهم ربك اعملهم

So stand straight, as you have been commanded, and those who have turned back with you, and do not exceed the measure:

فاستقم كما امرت ومن تاب معك ولا تطغوا

And do not lean upon those who have done wrong, or the Fire would touch you,

ولا تركنوا الى الذين ظلموا فتمسكم النار

and you would have, besides God, no ally,

وما لكم من دون الله من اولياء

And maintain the Contact at the two ends of the day, and at close moments of the night:

واقم الصلوة طرفى النهار وزلفا من اليل

good deeds dispel bad ones:

ان الحسنت يذهبن السيات

And be patient,

واصبر

Were there not, among the generations before you, possessors of a remnant who forbade corruption on earth, except a few among those We saved?

فلولا كان من القرون من قبلكم اولوا بقية ينهون عن الفساد في الارض الا قليلا ممن انجينا منهم

but they do not cease to differ, except those to whom your Guardian shows benevolence,

ولا يزالون مختلفين الا من رحم ربك

and it is for this that He created them.

ولذلك خلقهم

And all that We relate to you of the pieces of information about the messengers is that by which We make your Conscience firm;

وكلا نقص عليك من انباء الرسل ما نثبت به فوادك

And to God belongs what escapes the senses in the heavens and on the earth,

ولله غيب السموت والارض

and to Him the whole matter returns:

واليه يرجع الامر كله

so obey Him, and entrust yourself to Him:

فاعبده وتوكل عليه
