Fussilat

Their Skins Will Testify

In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent.

41:1

Ḥa. Mim.

حم

41:2–4

A descent from the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent: a Scripture whose signs are detailed, a flawless Recitation for a people who know, bearing good tidings and warning,

yet most of them turn away, so that they do not hear.

41:5

They say: "Our cores are under coverings against what you call us to, and there is a deafness in our ears, and between us and you a veil. So act — we too are acting."

Say: "I am only a human like you; it is revealed to me that your deity is a single deity. So stand straight toward Him and ask His forgiveness."

41:7

Woe to those who associate, who do not give pure liberality and who disown the last life!

Those who have believed and done sound deeds will indeed have a reward never held over them.

41:9

Say: "Do you really disown the One who created the earth in two days, and assign equals to Him?"

41:9

That is the Guardian of all beings.

He placed firm anchors upon it, blessed it, and determined its rations in it, in four equal days, for those who ask.

Then He proceeded toward the sky, which was smoke, and said to it and to the earth: "Come, both of you, willingly or unwillingly."

They said: "We come in deference."

So He completed them as seven heavens in two days, and inspired to each heaven its command.

And We adorned the nearest heaven with lamps,

and preserved it.

That is the measure set by the All-Powerful, the All-Knowing.

If they turn away, say: "I warn you of a thunderbolt like the thunderbolt of the Aad and the Thamud", when the messengers came to them, from before them and from behind them: "Obey none but God."

41:13–14

They said: "Had our Guardian willed, He would have sent down Agents. So we indeed disown what you have been sent with."

As for the Aad, they grew proud on the earth without right, and said: "Who is superior to us in strength?"

Did they not see that God, who created them, is superior to them in strength?

And they used to stubbornly reject Our signs.

So We sent upon them an icy wind, during ill-omened days, to make them taste the punishment of disgrace in the present life;

and the punishment of the last life is more disgraceful still, and they will not be helped.

As for the Thamud, We guided them, but they loved blindness more than guidance, so the thunderbolt of the degrading punishment seized them for what they used to earn.

And We saved those who believed and guarded themselves.

41:19

The day We gather the enemies of God toward the Fire, they will be arranged in columns,

until, when they reach it, their hearing, their sights, and their skins will testify against them about what they used to do.

They will say to their skins: "Why did you testify against us?"

They will say: "God, who makes everything utter, made us utter. It is He who created you the first time, and to Him you will be returned."

41:22

You did not hide yourselves from your hearing, your sights, and your skins testifying against you;

but you presumed that God did not know much of what you were doing.

That is the presumption you formed about your Guardian; it has caused your fall, and you have found yourselves among the losers.

If they endure, the Fire is their sojourn;

and if they ask to be readmitted, they will not be among those readmitted.

And We assigned to them acolytes who made attractive to them what was before them and what was behind them,

41:25

and the saying proved true against them, among communities that had already passed before them, of the Occulted and humans;

they were indeed losers.

41:26

Those who disown said: "Do not listen to this Recitation, and talk idly over it, perhaps you will win out."

41:27

We will surely make those who disown taste a severe punishment, and We will surely recompense them according to the worst of what they used to do.

That is the recompense of the enemies of God: the Fire;

they have therein the abode of eternity,

as a recompense for their stubbornly rejecting Our signs.

41:29

Those who disown will say: "Our Guardian, show us those who misled us among the Occulted and humans, that we may put them beneath our feet, so that they may be among the lowest."

41:30

Indeed, those who say: "Our Guardian is God," then stand straight — the Agents descend upon them: "Do not fear and do not grieve; receive the good tidings of the Garden that you were promised."

We are your protectors in the present life and in the last life;

41:32

and you will have therein whatever your Selves desire, and you will have therein whatever you ask for, as a welcome from One Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.

41:33

And who speaks better than one who calls to God, does a sound deed, and says: "I am among those true to God alone"?

The good deed and the bad deed are not equal.

Repel with what is better; then the one between you and whom there was hostility will be like a warm friend.

But this is received only by those who are patient,

and it is received only by one who has an immense share.

41:36

And if a goad from the Diverter goads you, seek refuge in God;

it is indeed He, the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

And among His signs are the night and the day, and the sun and the moon.

Do not prostrate to the sun or to the moon,

but prostrate to God, who created them, if it is Him that you obey.

If they grow proud, then those who are with your Guardian glorify Him night and day, without tiring.

And among His signs: you see the earth humble; then, when We send down water upon it, it quivers and swells.

He who brought it back to life is surely the One who brings the dead back to life;

He is capable of all things.

Those who pervert Our signs are indeed not hidden from Us.

41:40

Is one who is thrown into the Fire better, or one who comes secure on the Day of Appearance?

Act as you will,

He is indeed All-Seeing of what you do.

41:41–42

Those who disown the Reminder when it has come to them… And it is surely an impregnable Scripture, which falsehood cannot reach from before it or from behind it,

a descent from One Wise, Praiseworthy.

Nothing is said to you except what was already said to the messengers before you;

your Guardian is surely possessor of forgiveness and possessor of a painful sanction.

41:44

Had We made it a confused Recitation, they would have said: "Why were its signs not detailed?"

41:44

Confused and flawless at once?

Say: "It is, for those who believe, guidance and healing;

and those who do not believe have a deafness in their ears, and it is upon them a blindness;

those are called from a distant place."

41:45

We have indeed given Moussa the Scripture, and there was divergence about it;

and had it not been for a word that preceded from your Guardian, it would have been decided between them;

and they are surely, about it, in a troubling doubt.

Whoever does a sound deed, it is for himself;

and whoever does ill, it is against himself;

and your Guardian is not one to wrong the constrained under compulsion.

To Him is referred the knowledge of the Hour;

no fruit comes out of its sheath, no female carries nor gives birth, except with His knowledge;

and the day He calls out to them: "Where are My associates?", they will say: "We inform You that there is not among us any witness."

What they used to invoke before will stray away from them, and they will presume that they have no escape.

The human being does not tire of calling for good;

but if ill touches him, he becomes hopeless, disheartened.

And if We let him taste benevolence from Us after hardship that touched him, he will surely say: "This is mine by right, and I do not presume the Hour will rise; and if I am returned to my Guardian, I will surely have the best with Him."

41:50

We will surely inform those who disown of what they did, and We will surely make them taste a harsh punishment.

And when We favor the human being with blessings, he turns away and draws away to his side;

and when ill touches him, he is all endless calling.

41:52

Say: "Do you see? If this is from God and you disown it, who is more astray than one who is in a far rupture?"

41:53

We will show them Our signs in the horizons and in themselves, until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth.

Is it not enough that your Guardian is witness over all things?

Is it not so: they are indeed in contention about the meeting with their Guardian;

is it not so: He indeed encompasses all things perfectly.
