Al-Baqara

Guidance for Those Who Guard Themselves

In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent.

2:1

Alif. Lam. Mim.

الم

2:2

This is the Scripture: no doubt possible,

2:3

in it, guidance for those who guard themselves, who believe even though it escapes their senses, maintain the Contact, and spend from what We have provided them,

and those who believe in what has been sent down to you and in what was sent down before you, and who possess certainty of the last life — those are the ones who are upon guidance from their Guardian,

and those are the ones who succeed.

2:6

Those who disown, it is indeed the same to them whether you warn them or do not warn them: they do not believe.

2:7

God has sealed their cores and their hearing,

2:7

and over their sights, a cover;

and they will have an immense punishment.

And among mankind, there are some who say: "We believe in God and the Last Day", when they are not believers.

They seek to deceive God and those who have believed,

2:9

but they deceive none but themselves, without sensing it.

2:10

There is, in their cores, a sickness,

and God has increased them in sickness;

2:10

and they will have a painful punishment, for having lied.

And when it is said to them: "Do not sow corruption on the earth", they say: "We are only making things sound."

2:12

Is it not so: it is indeed they who are the corrupters; but they do not sense it.

2:13

And when it is said to them: "Believe as men have believed", they say: "Should we believe as the fools have believed?"

Is it not so: it is indeed they who are the fools; but they do not know.

And when they meet those who have believed, they say: "We have believed";

2:14

and when they are alone with their diverters, they say: "We are indeed with you, we are only mocking."

2:15

God mocks them, and lets them prolong their immoderation, where they go about blindly.

2:16

Those are the ones who bought error at the price of guidance; their trade did not, then, prove lucrative, and they did not let themselves be guided.

2:17

Their example is that of one who kindles a fire; when it has lit up what is around him,

God takes away their light and leaves them in darknesses where they no longer see clearly.

Deaf, mute, blind, they do not, then, return.

2:19

Or like a torrential rain from the sky, in which there are darknesses, thunder, and lightning:

they put their fingers in their ears, because of the thunderbolts, wary of death.

God encompasses perfectly those who disown.

The lightning is about to snatch away their sight.

Every time it lights up for them, they walk on;

and when it darkens over them, they stand still.

And had God willed, He would certainly have taken away their hearing and their sight.

God is indeed capable of all things.

2:21

O mankind! Obey your Guardian, who created you and those before you, perhaps you will guard yourselves,

He who made for you the earth a bed, and the sky a structure, and who sent down from the sky water, by which He brought forth fruits as provision for you.

So do not assign equals to God, while you know.

2:23

And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our obedient one, bring, then, a surah like it,

and call your witnesses, besides God, if you are veracious.

If you do not do it — and you will never do it — guard yourselves, then, against the Fire, whose fuel is men and stones,

prepared for those who disown.

And announce to those who have believed and done sound deeds that they will have gardens beneath which rivers flow.

2:25

Every time they are provided therein with a fruit as provision, they say: "This is what we were provided with before";

and it is brought to them, resembling.

They will have therein purified spouses,

and they abide therein eternally.

2:26

God is indeed not shy of multiplying an example, be it that of a gnat or something greater.

As for those who have believed, they know that it is the truth from their Guardian;

and as for those who disown, they say: "What did God intend by this example?"

He leads astray by it many, and guides by it many;

2:27

and He leads astray by it only the oversteppers, those who break the pact of God after the solemn engagement that binds it, sever what God ordered to be joined, and sow corruption on the earth.

Those are the losers.

2:28

How can you disown God, when you were dead and He gave you life; then He will cause you to die,

then He will bring you back to life, then it is to Him that you will be returned?

It is He who created for you all that is on the earth,

2:29

then He proceeded toward the sky, and proportioned them into seven heavens;

and He is All-Knowing of all things.

2:30

And when your Guardian said to the Agents: "I am going to place a successor on the earth."

2:30

They said: "Will You place therein one who will sow corruption in it and shed blood, while we glorify You with praise and proclaim Your holiness?"

He said: "I indeed know what you do not know."

2:31

And He taught Adam all the attributes, then He presented them to the Agents, and said: "Inform Me of the attributes of these, if you are veracious."

They said: "Glory be to You! We have no knowledge except what You have taught us; You, indeed, are the All-Knowing, the Wise."

2:33

He said: "O Adam! Inform them of their attributes."

2:33

And when he had informed them of their attributes, He said: "Did I not tell you that I know what escapes the senses in the heavens and on the earth, and that I know what you make appear and what you were withholding?"

2:34

And when We said to the Agents: "Prostrate before Adam," they prostrated,

2:34

except Iblis: he refused, grew proud, and was among those who disown.

2:35

And We said: "O Adam! Dwell, you and your spouse, in the Garden, and eat from it, at your ease, wherever you will,

2:35

but do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers."

2:36

But the Diverter made them slip out of it, and drove them out of the state they were in;

2:36

and We said: "Descend,

2:36

you will be enemies to one another,

and you will have, on the earth, a haven and an enjoyment for a time."

2:37

Then Adam received from his Guardian words, and He turned toward him with clemency.

He is indeed the Ever-Accepter of repentance, Benevolent.

2:38

We said: "Descend from it, all together;

2:38

then, if guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance, no fear upon them, and they will not grieve.

And those who disown and deny Our signs — those are the companions of the Fire, they abide therein eternally."

2:40

O Sons of Israel! Remember My blessing, that with which I blessed you, and be faithful to My pact, I will be faithful to yours; and it is Me that you should revere.

And believe in what I have sent down, confirming what is with you, and do not be the first to disown it;

2:41

and do not buy, with My signs, a paltry price; and it is Me toward whom you should guard yourselves.

And do not cloak the truth in falsehood, and do not withhold the truth, while you know.

And maintain the Contact, and give pure liberality,

2:43

and kneel with those who kneel.

2:44

Do you order virtue upon men, while forgetting yourselves, when you recite the Scripture?

Will you not then reason?

2:45

And seek help in patience and the Contact:

2:46

that is surely heavy, except for the humble, those who presume that they will meet their Guardian, and that it is to Him that they return.

2:47

O Sons of Israel! Remember My blessing, that with which I blessed you, and that I favored you above all beings.

2:48

And guard yourselves against a day when no Self will avail another Self in anything, when no intercession will be accepted from it, when no compensation will be taken from it, and when they will not be helped.

2:49

And when We saved you from the clan of Fir'awn, who inflicted upon you the worst of punishments, slaughtering your sons and violating the modesty of your women —

and there was in that an immense testing from your Guardian.

2:50

And when We split the sea for you, and saved you, and drowned the clan of Fir'awn, while you looked on.

2:51

And when We appointed for Moussa forty nights; then you took the calf, after him, and you were wrongdoers.

Then We overlooked it for you after that, perhaps you would be grateful.

2:53

And when We gave Moussa the Scripture

and the Discernment, perhaps you would let yourselves be guided.

2:54

And when Moussa said to his people: "O my people! You have indeed wronged yourselves by taking the calf; turn back, then, to your Giver of existence, and kill one another,

that is better for you with your Giver of existence."

He turned toward you with clemency, then:

He is indeed the Ever-Accepter of repentance, Benevolent.

2:55

And when you said: "O Moussa! We will not give you credit until we see God openly"; the thunderbolt seized you then, while you looked on.

Then We raised you after your death, perhaps you would be grateful.

And We spread over you the shade of the cloud, and sent down upon you manna and quails:

"Eat of the wholesome things We have provided you" —

2:57

they did not wrong Us, but it was themselves that they wronged.

2:58

And when We said: "Enter this city, eat from it wherever you will, at your ease, enter by the gate, prostrate, and say: Unburden us — We will forgive you your faults,

and We will give more to those who do good."

But those who did wrong substituted a saying other than what had been said to them; We then sent down upon those who had done wrong a defilement from the sky, for having overstepped.

2:60

And when Moussa asked for drink for his people; We said: "Strike the rock with your staff";

and behold, twelve springs gushed forth from it:

each group of men knew its drinking place.

Eat and drink of God's provision,

and do not spread disorder on the earth as corrupters.

2:61

And when you said: "O Moussa! We can never endure a single kind of food; invoke, then, your Guardian for us, that He bring forth for us of what the earth grows, of its herbs, its cucumbers, its garlic, its lentils, and its onions."

2:61

He said: "Would you take what is immediate in exchange for what is better?

2:61

Descend, then, to Egypt, for you will find there what you have asked."

2:61

And humiliation and misery were imprinted upon them, and they incurred the anger of God.

That is because they used to disown the signs of God, and kill the informants without right.

It is for having disobeyed and crossed the limits.

2:62

Indeed, those who have believed, the Reoriented, the Helpers, and the Aspirants — whoever has believed in God and the Last Day, and done sound work, their reward is theirs with their Guardian, no fear upon them, and they will not grieve.

2:63

And when We took your solemn engagement, and elevated above you the Mount:

"Take with strength what We have given you, and remember what is in it, perhaps you will guard yourselves."

Then you turned your backs after that;

and without God's favor upon you and His benevolence, you would have been among the losers.

2:65

You have indeed known those among you who crossed the limits concerning the Rest; We then said to them: "Be apes, rebuffed."

We made of it an exemplary deterrent for what preceded it and what followed it, and an admonition for those who guard themselves.

2:67

And when Moussa said to his people: "God orders you to slaughter a cow."

They said: "Do you take us in mockery?"

He said: "I take refuge in God against being among the ignorant."

They said: "Invoke your Guardian for us, that He make clear to us what it is."

He said: "He says she is a cow neither old nor virgin,

of middle age between the two;

do, then, what you are ordered."

They said: "Invoke your Guardian for us, that He make clear to us her color."

He said: "He says she is a yellow cow, of a vivid yellow,

which delights the eyes."

They said: "Invoke your Guardian for us, that He make clear to us what it is: the cows all resemble one another to us, and we will surely, if God wills, be among those who let themselves be guided."

He said: "He says she is a cow not made docile to stir up the earth or water the tilth,

unblemished, without any spot."

They said: "Now you bring the truth."

They slaughtered her then, after having very nearly not done it.

2:72

And when you killed a Self, and pushed one another back concerning it —

but God was going to bring out what you were withholding.

We then said: "Strike him with a part of it";

thus does God bring the dead back to life, and show you His signs, perhaps you will reason.

Then your cores hardened after that, so that they are like stone, or harder still.

There are surely, among stones, those from which rivers gush forth;

and there are surely, among them, those which split, and water comes out of them;

2:74

and there are surely, among them, those which descend, out of dread of God.

And God is not heedless of what you do.

2:75

Would you covet, then, that they give you credit, when a fraction among them used to hear the word of God, then displace it from its context, after having grasped it with reason, while knowing?

And when they meet those who have believed, they say: "We have believed";

2:76

and when they are alone with one another, they say: "Will you recount to them what God has opened to you, that they may dispute with you about it before your Guardian?"

Will you not then reason?

Do they not know, then, that God knows what they keep secret and what they disclose?

2:78

And among them, there are people without a prior Scripture, who know the Scripture only through vain wishes,

and who only presume.

2:79

Woe, then, to those who write the Scripture with their hands, then say: "This is from God", to buy with it a paltry price!

Woe to them for what their hands have written,

and woe to them for what they earn!

2:80

And they said: "The Fire will touch us only for numbered days."

Say: "Have you taken a pact with God — God never fails His pact —,

or do you say about God what you do not know?"

2:81

But yes: whoever acquires an evil deed, and whose fault encompasses him — those are the companions of the Fire, they abide therein eternally.

And those who have believed and done sound deeds — those are the companions of the Garden, they abide therein eternally.

2:83

And when We took the solemn engagement of the Sons of Israel: "You shall obey none but God,

2:83

and beneficence toward the two parents, relatives, orphans, and the destitute;

and say to men what is beautiful;

and maintain the Contact, and give pure liberality";

then you turned your backs, except a few of you, turning away.

And when We took your solemn engagement: "You shall not shed your blood, and shall not expel yourselves from your abodes"; then you acknowledged it, and you are witnesses to it.

2:85

Then here you are, nonetheless, killing one another, and expelling a fraction of your own from their abodes, supporting one another against them in transgression and hostility;

2:85

and if they come to you as captives, you exchange them, even though their expulsion was prohibited to you.

2:85

Do you believe, then, in part of the Scripture, and disown another part?

What, then, is the recompense of whoever among you acts thus, but disgrace in the present life?

And on the Day of Appearance, they will be brought back to the most severe of punishments.

And God is not heedless of what you do.

Those are the ones who bought the present life at the price of the last life; so the punishment will not be lightened for them, and they will not be helped.

2:87

We indeed gave Moussa the Scripture, and We made the messengers follow after him.

2:87

And We gave Issa, son of Maryam, the clear proofs, and We fortified him with the sacred Influx.

Every time a messenger came to you with what your own Selves did not lean toward, did you not grow proud?

You denied a fraction of them, and you kill another.

2:88

And they said: "Our cores are wrapped up";

no, God cursed them for their disowning, and they believe only a little.

And when a scripture came to them from God, confirming what is with them — though before they used to ask for the opening against those who disowned —,

2:89

when, then, there came to them what they recognized, they disowned it.

The curse of God is, then, upon those who disown.

2:90

How evil is that with which they bought their own Selves: to disown what God sent down, out of iniquity, because God sends down of His favor upon whom He wills among His obedient ones!

They incurred, then, anger upon anger.

And for those who disown, a degrading punishment.

And when it is said to them: "Believe in what God has sent down", they say: "We believe in what was sent down upon us"; and they disown what is beyond it,

and it is the truth, confirming what is with them.

Say: "Why, then, did you kill the informants of God, before, if you were believers?"

2:92

Moussa indeed came to you with the clear proofs; then you took the calf, after him, and you were wrongdoers.

And when We took your solemn engagement, and elevated above you the Mount:

"Take with strength what We have given you, and listen."

2:93

They said: "We have heard and disobeyed";

and their cores were made to drink in the calf, because of their disowning.

Say: "How evil is what your faith orders you, if you are believers!"

2:94

Say: "If the last abode, with God, belongs exclusively to you, to the exclusion of mankind, wish, then, for death, if you are veracious."

But they will never wish for it, because of what their hands have prepared.

And God is All-Knowing of the wrongdoers.

You will certainly find them, of all men, the keenest on life,

even more than those who have associated; one of them would like to live a thousand years,

but that would not pull him away at all from the punishment, even if he lived that long.

God is All-Seeing of what they do.

2:97

Say: "Whoever is an enemy of Jibril should know that it is he who brought it down upon your core, with God's permission, confirming what precedes it, and as a guidance and good tidings for the believers."

2:98

Whoever is an enemy of God, His Agents, His messengers, Jibril, and Mikal should know that God is indeed the enemy of those who disown.

We have indeed sent down to you clear signs,

and only the oversteppers disown them.

Is it that, every time they conclude a pact, a fraction among them casts it aside?

Most of them, rather, do not believe.

2:101

And when a messenger came to them from God, confirming what is with them, a fraction of those to whom the Scripture was given cast the Scripture of God behind their backs, as if they did not know.

2:102

And they followed what the Diverters recited concerning the dominion of Sulayman.

2:102

But Sulayman never disowned,

2:102

but it is the Diverters who disowned, teaching men illusion, and what was sent down upon the two kings at Babel, Harut and Marut;

2:102

and those two did not teach anyone without first saying: "We are only a trial, do not disown, then."

They learned from them, then, that by which they separate a man from his spouse;

but they harm no one by that, except with God's permission.

And they learn what harms them and does not benefit them.

They indeed knew that whoever bought it would have, in the last life, no allotment.

How evil is what they sold their own Selves for, had they known!

And had they believed and guarded themselves, a requital from God would indeed have been better, had they known.

2:104

O you who have believed! Do not say "Disdain us", but say "Look at us", and listen.

And for those who disown, a painful punishment.

2:105

Those who disown, among the people of the Scripture, and the associators would not like any good to be sent down upon you from your Guardian;

but God reserves His benevolence for whom He wills.

And God holds the immense favor.

2:106

Whatever sign We copy, or leave to be forgotten, We bring one better than it, or similar to it.

Do you not know that God is capable of all things?

Do you not know that to God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and that you have, besides God, neither protector nor help?

2:108

Or would you question your messenger as Moussa was questioned before?

And whoever substitutes disowning for faith has indeed strayed from the straight way.

2:109

Many, among the people of the Scripture, would like to bring you back, after your faith, to a disowning,

out of envy, from themselves, after the truth has become clear to them.

2:109

Overlook, then, and turn the page, until God brings His command.

God is indeed capable of all things.

And maintain the Contact, and give pure liberality.

And whatever good you advance for yourselves, you will find it with God.

God is indeed All-Seeing of what you do.

2:111

And they said: "None will enter the Garden, except one who belongs to the Reoriented or the Helpers."

Those are their vain wishes.

Say: "Bring your demonstration, if you are veracious."

But yes: whoever renders his direction true to God alone, while doing good, has his reward with his Guardian; no fear upon them, and they will not grieve.

2:113

And the Reoriented said: "The Helpers rest on nothing"; and the Helpers said: "The Reoriented rest on nothing"; while they recite the Scripture.

Thus said those who do not know, in a saying like theirs.

God will judge between them, on the Day of Appearance, concerning what they used to differ over.

2:114

And who then does more wrong than one who prevents God's name from being mentioned in God's places of prostration, and endeavours to dismantle them?

Those should not enter them except fearful.

They have, in the present life, a disgrace,

and they will have, in the last life, an immense punishment.

And to God belong the east and the west:

2:115

wherever you turn, there is the direction of God.

God is indeed Vast, All-Knowing.

2:116

And they said: "God has taken a child."

Glory be to Him!

To Him, rather, belongs what is in the heavens and on the earth;

all are devoted to Him.

Unprecedented Creator of the heavens and the earth.

2:117

When He decrees a matter, He only says to it: "Be",

2:117

and it is.

2:118

And those who do not know said: "Why does God not speak to us, or why does a sign not come to us!"

Thus said those before them, in a saying like theirs;

their cores resemble one another.

We have indeed made the signs clear for a people who have certainty.

We have sent you, in truth, as a bearer of good tidings and a warner,

2:119

and you will not be questioned about the companions of the Blaze.

2:120

And neither the Reoriented nor the Helpers will ever be satisfied with you, until you follow their doctrine.

2:120

Say: "The guidance of God, that is the guidance."

2:120

And were you to follow their emotions, after what has come to you of knowledge, you would have, against God, neither protector nor help.

2:121

Those to whom We have given the Scripture, and who recite it as it should be recited, those are the ones who believe in it.

And whoever disowns it — those are the losers.

2:122

O Sons of Israel! Remember My blessing, that with which I blessed you, and that I favored you above all beings.

2:123

And guard yourselves against a day when no Self will avail another Self in anything, when no compensation will be accepted from it, when no intercession will benefit it, and when they will not be helped.

2:124

And when the Guardian of Ibrahim tested him with words, which he completed.

2:124

He said: "I am indeed going to make you a guide for mankind."

He said: "And among my descendants?"

2:124

He said: "My pact does not accrue to the wrongdoers."

2:125

And when We made the House, for mankind, a place to come back to, and a security; and take, from the station of Ibrahim, a place of Contact.

2:125

And We bound Ibrahim and Isma'il by a pact: "Purify My House for those who frequent it, those who reside there, and those who kneel in service and prostrate in allegiance."

2:126

And when Ibrahim said: "My Guardian, make of this a secure land, and provide its inhabitants with fruits, those among them who believe in God and the Last Day."

2:126

He said: "And whoever disowns, I grant him a brief enjoyment, then I compel him toward the punishment of the Fire."

And what an evil destination!

2:127

And when Ibrahim was elevating the foundations of the House, with Isma'il:

"Our Guardian, accept this from us; You, indeed, are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

2:128

Our Guardian, make us both true to You alone, and, of our descendants, a community true to You alone.

2:128

And show us our beneficent practices.

And turn toward us with clemency.

You, indeed, are the Ever-Accepter of repentance, Benevolent.

2:129

Our Guardian, and raise up among them a messenger, from among themselves, who recites Your signs to them, teaches them the Scripture and the wisdom, and purifies them.

You, indeed, are the All-Powerful, the Wise."

2:130

And who, then, falls away from the doctrine of Ibrahim, but one who makes a fool of his own Self?

We indeed chose him in the present life,

and in the last life, he will surely be among those who are sound.

2:131

when his Guardian said to him: "Be true to Me alone";

he said: "I am true to the Guardian of all beings alone."

2:132

And Ibrahim made this a recommendation to his sons,

and so did Yaacoub: "O my sons! God has chosen this Law for you; do not die, then, except being true to Him alone."

Or were you witnesses, when death presented itself to Yaacoub, when he said to his sons: "What will you obey after me?"

2:133

They said: "We will obey your deity, the deity of your ancestors, Ibrahim, Isma'il, and Ishaq, one deity, and to Him we are true."

2:134

That is a community that has already passed:

to it what it earned,

2:134

and to you what you earned;

and you will not be questioned about what they used to do.

And they said: "Be Reoriented or Helpers, you will let yourselves be guided."

2:135

Say: "No, rather the doctrine of Ibrahim, wholly turned toward God,"

and he was not among those who associate.

2:136

Say: "We believe in God, in what has been sent down to us, in what was sent down to Ibrahim, Isma'il, Ishaq, Yaacoub, and the bloodlines, and in what was given to Moussa and Issa, and in what was given to the informants, from their Guardian; we make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we are true."

If they believe in what you have believed in, they then let themselves be guided;

and if they turn their backs, they are then only in a rupture;

God will soon suffice you against them:

and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

2:138

The dye of God —

and who dyes better than God? —

and it is Him that we obey.

Say: "Do you dispute with us about God, when He is our Guardian and your Guardian? To us our works, and to you your works,

and to Him we devote ourselves exclusively."

2:140

Or do you say: "Ibrahim, Isma'il, Ishaq, Yaacoub, and the bloodlines were Reoriented or Helpers"?

Say: "Is it you who know best, or God?"

And who, then, does more wrong than one who withholds a testimony he holds from God?

And God is not heedless of what you do.

That is a community that has already passed:

to it what it earned,

and to you what you earned;

and you will not be questioned about what they used to do.

2:142

The fools, among mankind, will say: "What has turned them away from their rallying point, the one they used to be upon?"

2:142

Say: "To God belong the east and the west;

He guides whom He wills to a straight path."

2:143

And thus have We made you an exemplary community,

2:143

so that you may be witnesses against mankind, and the messenger a witness against you.

2:143

And We had placed the rallying point, the one you were upon, only to distinguish who follows the messenger from who turns back on his heels.

2:143

That was indeed heavy, except for those God has guided.

2:143

And it is not for God to let your faith dissipate.

2:143

God is surely, toward mankind, full of kindness, Benevolent.

2:144

We will indeed see your face turning in every direction in the sky; We will then give you as your course a rallying point that satisfies you.

2:144

Set your course, then, for the inviolable place of prostration,

2:144

and wherever you are, set your course for it.

2:144

Those to whom the Scripture was given surely know that it is the truth from their Guardian.

And God is not heedless of what they do.

2:145

And even if you brought to those to whom the Scripture was given every sign, they would not follow your rallying point.

2:145

And you will not follow their rallying point;

2:145

nor do some of them follow the rallying point of others.

And were you to follow their emotions, after what has come to you of knowledge, you would then surely be among the wrongdoers.

2:146

Those to whom We gave the Scripture recognize it as they recognize their own sons,

2:146

and a fraction among them surely withholds the truth, while knowing.

The truth comes from your Guardian;

so never be among those who contend.

2:148

And each has a direction toward which he sets his course; race, then, in good deeds.

2:148

Wherever you are, God will bring you all back.

2:148

God is indeed capable of all things.

2:149

And from wherever you come out, set your course for the inviolable place of prostration:

2:149

it is surely the truth from your Guardian.

2:149

And God is not heedless of what you do.

2:150

And from wherever you come out, set your course for the inviolable place of prostration,

2:150

and wherever you are, set your course for it, so that men may have no argument against you — except those among them who do wrong; do not dread them, then, but dread Me —

2:150

and so that I may complete My blessing upon you, and perhaps you will let yourselves be guided,

as We have sent, among you, a messenger from among yourselves, who recites Our signs to you, purifies you, teaches you the Scripture and the wisdom, and teaches you what you did not know. Remember Me, then, I will remember you; be grateful to Me, and do not disown Me.

2:153

O you who have believed! Seek help in patience and the Contact:

2:153

God is indeed with the patient.

2:154

And do not say of those who are killed in the way of God that they are dead.

2:154

No, they are alive, but you do not sense it.

2:155

We will certainly test you with some fear and hunger, and with a diminution of goods, Self, and fruits;

2:156

and give good news to the patient, those who, when misfortune strikes them, say: "We are indeed God's, and it is to Him that we return."

2:157

Those are the ones upon whom rest contacts from their Guardian, and a benevolence,

2:157

and those are the ones who let themselves be guided.

2:158

Safa and Marwa are indeed among the perceptible markers of God.

2:158

Whoever performs the Hajj of the House or performs the Umra, no blame upon him for visiting them.

And whoever does good willingly — God is indeed Grateful, All-Knowing.

2:159

Indeed, those who withhold what We have sent down of clear proofs and guidance, after We have made it clear to mankind in the Scripture — those are the ones God curses, and whom those who curse, curse,

2:160

except those who turn back, become sound, and make clear: those are the ones toward whom I turn with clemency; I am the Ever-Accepter of repentance, Benevolent.

Indeed, those who disown and die while disowning — those are the ones upon whom weighs the curse of God, the Agents, and mankind, all together, wherein they will abide eternally;

the punishment will not be lightened for them, and they will not be granted a delay.

And your deity is one deity;

there is no deity but Him,

the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent.

2:164

There are surely, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, in the alternation of night and day, in the vessel that sails at sea laden with what benefits mankind, in the water that God sends down from the sky and by which He brings the earth back to life after its death, spreading in it every kind of living being, in the diversity of the winds, and in the cloud subjected between the sky and the earth — signs for a people who reason.

2:165

And among mankind, there are some who take, besides God, equals, whom they love as one loves God;

2:165

but those who have believed are even more intense in the love of God.

2:165

If the wrongdoers could see, when they see the punishment, that power belongs to God in its entirety, and that God is severe in punishment —

2:166

When those who were followed will declare themselves quit of those who followed them, and they will see the punishment, and the links between them will be severed.

2:167

And those who followed will say: "If only we had a return, we would declare ourselves quit of them as they have declared themselves quit of us."

2:167

Thus does God show them their works, as desolations for them,

2:167

and they will never come out of the Fire.

2:168

O mankind! Eat of what is on the earth, of what is permitted and wholesome,

2:168

and do not follow the footsteps of the Diverter:

2:168

he is indeed for you a manifest enemy.

2:169

He orders you only evil and indecency, and to say about God what you do not know.

2:170

And when it is said to them: "Follow what God has sent down", they say: "No, we follow what we found our ancestors upon."

2:170

What! Even if their ancestors reasoned nothing and did not let themselves be guided?

2:171

And the example of those who disown is that of one who cries out to what hears nothing but a call and a shout.

2:171

Deaf, mute, blind, they do not, then, reason.

O you who have believed! Eat of the wholesome things We have provided you, and be grateful toward God, if it is Him that you obey.

2:173

He has prohibited to you only the dead animal, blood, the flesh of swine, and what has been consecrated to other than God.

2:173

But whoever is compelled to it, without being rebellious or crossing the limits, no transgression upon him.

2:173

God is indeed Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.

2:174

Indeed, those who withhold what God has sent down of the Scripture, and buy with it a paltry price — those are the ones who swallow nothing into their bellies but the Fire; God will not speak to them on the Day of Appearance, and will not purify them,

2:174

and they will have a painful punishment.

2:175

Those are the ones who bought error at the price of guidance, and punishment at the price of forgiveness. What, then, makes them so enduring in the face of the Fire!

2:176

That is because God sent down the Scripture in truth,

2:176

and those who differ about the Scripture are surely in a far rupture.

2:177

Virtue does not consist in turning your faces toward the east or the west,

2:177

but virtue is one who believes in God, the Last Day, the Agents, the Scripture, and the informants, and who gives of his goods, despite his love for them, to relatives, orphans, the destitute, the stranded traveler, those who ask, and for freeing those under the burden of a debt, who maintains the Contact and gives pure liberality,

2:177

those who are faithful to their pact when they have made a pact,

2:177

and the patient in adversity, hardship, and at the moment of violence:

2:177

those are the ones who have been veracious,

2:177

and those are the ones who guard themselves.

O you who have believed! The investigation is prescribed for you concerning those killed:

2:178

the independent with the independent, the obedient one with the obedient one, and the woman with the woman.

2:178

But for the one whose brother overlooks something: a pursuit according to what is recognized, and a discharge in good grace.

That is a lightening from your Guardian, and a benevolence.

And whoever commits aggression after that will have a painful punishment.

2:179

And you have, in the investigation, a life, O possessors of intelligence, perhaps you will guard yourselves.

2:180

It is prescribed for you, when death presents itself to one of you, if he leaves some good,

2:180

the testament in favor of the two parents and relatives, according to what is recognized:

2:180

a duty upon those who guard themselves.

2:181

And whoever changes it after having heard it, the transgression thereof falls only upon those who change it.

2:181

God is indeed the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

2:182

But whoever fears, on the part of a testator, a partiality or a transgression, and reconciles them, no transgression upon him.

2:182

God is indeed Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.

O you who have believed! Abstention is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, perhaps you will guard yourselves, for numbered days.

And whoever among you is sick, or on a journey, then a number of other days;

and for those who have the capacity for it, a compensation, the feeding of a destitute person.

And whoever does good willingly, it is better for him;

and that you abstain is better for you, if you knew.

2:185

The month of refreshment, that in which this Recitation was sent down, a guidance for mankind, and clear proofs of guidance and the Discernment.

2:185

Whoever among you attests the beginning of that month, let him abstain in it;

and whoever is sick, or on a journey, then a number of other days.

2:185

God wants for you ease, He does not want for you hardship,

2:185

and that you make the number of days full, and that you proclaim the greatness of God for having guided you, perhaps you will be grateful.

2:186

And when My obedient ones ask you about Me, I am near:

2:186

I answer the call of the one who calls upon Me, when he calls upon Me.

2:186

Let them, then, respond to My call, and believe in Me, perhaps they will attain rectitude.

2:187

Permitted to you, on the night of abstention, is intimacy with your women:

2:187

they are a garment for you, and you are a garment for them.

2:187

God knew that you were betraying yourselves; He turned toward you with clemency, then, and overlooked it for you.

2:187

So now, unite with them,

2:187

and seek what God has prescribed for you.

2:187

And eat and drink until the white thread becomes distinguishable to you from the black thread of dawn,

2:187

then complete the abstention until night.

2:187

And do not unite with them, while you are in residence in the places of prostration.

2:187

Those are the limits of God,

2:187

so do not approach them.

2:187

Thus does God make His signs clear for mankind, perhaps they will guard themselves.

2:188

And do not devour your goods among yourselves through falsehood, and do not offer them to judges to devour, through transgression, a fraction of the goods of mankind, while you know.

2:189

They ask you about public announcements.

Say: "They are appointed times for mankind, and for the Hajj."

2:189

And virtue does not consist in coming to houses from their backs,

2:189

but virtue is one who guards himself.

2:189

Come, then, to houses by their doors,

2:189

and guard yourselves toward God, perhaps you will succeed.

2:190

And fight, in the way of God, those who fight you, but do not commit aggression:

2:190

God indeed does not love the aggressors.

2:191

And kill them wherever you surprise them, and expel them from where they expelled you:

2:191

the trial is more severe than killing.

2:191

And do not fight them near the inviolable place of prostration, until they fight you there;

2:191

but if they fight you, kill them then:

2:191

such is the recompense of those who disown.

2:192

But if they cease, God is indeed Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.

2:193

And fight them until there is no more trial, and the Law is for God;

2:193

and if they cease, then no hostility, except toward the wrongdoers.

2:194

The inviolable month for the inviolable month, and for inviolable things, an investigation.

2:194

Whoever has committed aggression against you, commit aggression against him to the extent of his aggression against you,

2:194

and guard yourselves toward God, and know that God is with those who guard themselves.

2:195

And spend in the way of God, but do not cast your means of livelihood into what makes perish; and do good:

2:195

God loves those who do good.

2:196

And complete the Hajj and the Umra for God.

2:196

And if you are impeded, then whatever offering is easily available.

2:196

And do not shave your heads until the offering has reached its place of delivery;

2:196

And whoever among you is sick, or suffers a nuisance of the head, then a compensation by abstention, charity, or a beneficent practice.

2:196

And once secure, whoever enjoys the Umra until the Hajj, then whatever offering is easily available.

2:196

And whoever does not find the means, then an abstention of three days during the Hajj, and seven once you have returned: that is ten full days.

2:196

That, for one whose family is not present at the inviolable place of prostration.

2:196

And guard yourselves toward God, and know that God is severe in sanction.

2:197

The Hajj takes place in known months.

2:197

Whoever commits himself thereby to the Hajj, then no obscenity, no overstepping, and no arguing during the Hajj.

2:197

And whatever good you do, God knows it.

2:197

And take your provisions;

2:197

for the best of provisions is guardedness.

2:197

And guard yourselves toward Me, O possessors of intelligence.

2:198

No blame upon you for seeking a favor from your Guardian.

2:198

And when you surge forth from Arafat, remember God near the Inviolable Perceptible Marker,

2:198

and remember Him, as He has guided you, though you were before among the astray.

2:199

Then surge forth from where men surge forth,

2:199

and ask God's forgiveness.

2:199

God is indeed Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.

2:200

And when you have completed your beneficent practices, remember God as you remember your ancestors, or with an even more intense remembrance.

2:200

And among mankind, there is one who says: "Our Guardian, give us in the present life" — and he will have, in the last life, no allotment.

2:201

And among them, there is one who says: "Our Guardian, give us a good share in the present life, and a good share in the last life, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire."

2:202

Those are the ones who have a portion of what they have earned.

2:202

God is swift in reckoning.

2:203

And remember God during numbered days.

2:203

And whoever hastens in two days, no transgression upon him;

2:203

and whoever delays, no transgression upon him, for one who guards himself.

2:203

And guard yourselves toward God, and know that it is to Him that you will be gathered.

2:204

And among mankind, there is one whose saying, on the present life, dazzles you, and who calls God to witness what is in his core, while he is the fiercest of quarrelers.

2:205

And when he turns his back, he endeavours on the earth to sow corruption in it, and to annihilate tilth and offspring.

2:205

God does not love corruption.

2:206

And when it is said to him: "Guard yourself toward God", might seizes him in transgression; Jahannam suffices him, then.

2:206

And what an evil bed!

2:207

And among mankind, there is one who sells his own Self, seeking the good pleasure of God.

2:207

God is full of kindness toward His obedient ones.

2:208

O you who have believed! Enter into peace, in totality,

2:208

and do not follow the footsteps of the Diverter:

2:208

he is indeed for you a manifest enemy.

2:209

And if you falter after the clear proofs have come to you, know then that God is All-Powerful, Wise.

2:210

Do they await only that God come to them in canopies of clouds,

2:210

with the Agents, and that the matter be decided?

2:210

And it is to God that all matters return.

2:211

Ask the Sons of Israel how many clear signs We gave them.

2:211

And whoever changes the blessing of God after it has come to him — God is indeed severe in sanction.

2:212

The present life has been embellished for those who disown, and they scoff at those who have believed;

2:212

but those who guard themselves will be above them, on the Day of Appearance.

2:212

And God provides for whom He wills, without reckoning.

2:213

Mankind formed a single community; God then raised up the informants, bearers of good tidings and warners, and sent down with them the Scripture, in truth, so that it might judge between men what they differed over.

2:213

And only those to whom it was given diverged over it,

2:213

after the clear proofs had come to them, out of iniquity among themselves.

2:213

God then guided those who believed to the truth over which they diverged, with His permission.

2:213

And God guides whom He wills to a straight path.

2:214

Or did you think you would enter the Garden, when there has not yet come to you the equivalent of what those who passed before you experienced? Adversity and hardship touched them, and they were shaken to the point that the messenger and those who had believed with him said: "When, then, is the help of God?"

2:214

Is it not so: the help of God is indeed near!

2:215

They ask you: what should they spend?

2:215

Say: "Whatever good you spend belongs to the two parents, relatives, orphans, the destitute, and the stranded traveler."

2:215

And whatever good you do, God is indeed All-Knowing of it.

2:216

Combat is prescribed for you, though it is distasteful to you.

2:216

It may be that you dislike a thing, while it is a good for you;

2:216

and it may be that you like a thing, while it is an ill for you.

2:216

God knows,

2:216

and you do not know.

2:217

They ask you about the inviolable month, combat taking place in it.

2:217

Say: "To fight in it is grave;

2:217

but to bar from the way of God, to disown Him, to bar from the inviolable place of prostration, and to expel its inhabitants from it, is graver still with God;

2:217

and the trial is graver than killing."

2:217

And they will not cease to fight you until they make you renounce your Law, if they can.

2:217

And whoever among you renounces his Law, and dies while disowning — those are the ones whose works have collapsed, in the present life and in the last life,

2:217

and those are the companions of the Fire, they abide therein eternally.

2:218

Indeed, those who have believed, those who have emigrated and have striven in the way of God — those are the ones who hope for the benevolence of God.

2:218

And God is Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.

2:219

They ask you about wine and games of chance.

2:219

Say: "There is, in both, a great transgression, and profits for men;

2:219

but their transgression is greater than their profit."

2:219

And they ask you: what should they spend? Say: "The surplus."

2:220

Thus does God make the signs clear to you, perhaps you will reflect on the present life and on the last life.

2:220

And they ask you about orphans. Say: "Making their situation sound is a good;

2:220

and if you mix your affairs with theirs, they are your brothers."

2:220

God distinguishes the corrupter from him who makes things sound.

2:220

And had God willed, He would have overwhelmed you.

2:220

God is indeed All-Powerful, Wise.

2:221

And do not marry women who associate, until they believe;

2:221

and a believing obedient woman is indeed better than a woman who associates, even if she dazzles you.

2:221

And do not give in marriage to those who associate, until they believe;

2:221

and a believing obedient man is indeed better than a man who associates, even if he dazzles you.

2:221

Those are the ones who call toward the Fire,

2:221

while God calls toward the Garden and forgiveness, with His permission,

2:221

and He makes His signs clear for mankind, perhaps they will remember.

2:222

And they ask you about menstruation. Say: "It is a nuisance;

so keep away from women during menstruation,

and do not approach them until they are no longer inconvenienced.

2:222

And once they are no longer so, unite with them from where God has ordered you."

2:222

God loves those who turn back, and He loves those who keep themselves clean.

2:223

Your women are a tilth for you; unite, then, with your tilth as you will,

2:223

and advance for yourselves;

2:223

and guard yourselves toward God,

2:223

and know that you will meet Him.

2:223

And give good news to the believers.

2:224

And do not make God, in your oaths, a pretext you use at will,

to vouch that you are virtuous, that you guard yourselves, and that you reconcile men.

God is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

2:225

God will not hold you to account for idle talk in your oaths,

2:225

but He will hold you to account for what your cores have earned.

2:225

God is Most-Forgiving, Forbearing.

2:226

For those who swear to abstain from their women, a period of expectancy of four months;

2:226

and if they return, God is indeed Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.

2:227

And if they are resolved on repudiation, God is indeed the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

2:228

And repudiated women observe a period of expectancy of three cycles;

2:228

and it is not permitted for them to withhold what God has created in their wombs, if they believe in God and the Last Day.

2:228

And their husbands have greater right to bring them back during this period, if they want a reconciliation.

2:228

And they have rights equivalent to their obligations, according to what is recognized;

2:228

and men have, over them, a degree.

2:228

God is All-Powerful, Wise.

2:229

Repudiation is twice.

2:229

Then, either a resumption according to what is recognized, or a release in good grace.

2:229

And it is not permitted for you to take back anything of what you gave them, unless both fear that they will not maintain the limits of God.

2:229

And if you fear that they will not maintain the limits of God, no blame upon them both for what she ransoms herself with.

2:229

Those are the limits of God,

2:229

so do not cross them.

2:229

And whoever crosses the limits of God — those are the wrongdoers.

2:230

If he repudiates her, she is no longer permitted to him thereafter, until she marries a spouse other than him.

2:230

And if this one repudiates her, no blame upon them both for reuniting, if they presume they will maintain the limits of God.

2:230

Those are the limits of God, which He makes clear for a people who know.

2:231

And when you repudiate women, and they reach their term, retain them according to what is recognized, or release them according to what is recognized;

2:231

and do not retain them to harm, to commit aggression.

2:231

And whoever does that has wronged himself.

2:231

And do not take the signs of God in mockery.

2:231

And remember God's blessing upon you, and what He has sent down upon you of the Scripture and the wisdom, by which He exhorts you.

2:231

And guard yourselves toward God,

2:231

and know that God is All-Knowing of all things.

2:232

And when you repudiate women, and they reach their term, do not put obstacles to their marrying their spouses, once there is mutual satisfaction between them according to what is recognized.

2:232

That is what whoever among you believes in God and the Last Day is exhorted to.

2:232

That is purer for you, and cleaner.

2:232

God knows, and you do not know.

2:233

And mothers take their children into care for two full years,

2:233

for whoever wants to complete this care.

2:233

And it is incumbent upon the one to whom the child is born to provide their provision and their clothing, according to what is recognized.

2:233

No Self is burdened beyond its capacity.

2:233

Let no mother be harmed because of her child, nor the one to whom the child is born, because of his child.

2:233

And upon the heir falls the same thing.

2:233

And if they want a weaning, by mutual satisfaction between them and after conferring, no blame upon them both.

2:233

And if you want to have your children taken into care, no blame upon you, once you pay what you owe according to what is recognized.

2:233

And guard yourselves toward God,

2:233

and know that God is All-Seeing of what you do.

2:234

And those among you who are kept faithfully, forsaking wives, they observe a period of expectancy of four months and ten;

2:234

and once they reach their term, no blame upon you for what they do with themselves according to what is recognized.

2:234

And God is Intimately Acquainted with what you do.

2:235

And no blame upon you, in what you hint at as a proposal of marriage to women, or what you conceal within yourselves.

2:235

God knows that you will think of them; but do not promise them anything in secret,

2:235

except to say a recognized saying.

2:235

And do not conclude the marriage contract before the document reaches its term.

2:235

And know that God knows what is in your Selves; beware of Him, then.

2:235

And know that God is Most-Forgiving, Forbearing.

2:236

No blame upon you, if you repudiate women while you have not touched them, or have not fixed an obligation for them.

2:236

And grant them an enjoyment — the well-off according to his measure, and the modest according to his measure — an enjoyment according to what is recognized:

2:236

a duty upon those who do good.

2:237

And if you repudiate them before having touched them, while you have fixed an obligation for them, half of what you fixed, unless they overlook it, or unless he in whose hands is the marriage contract overlooks it.

2:237

And that you overlook is closer to guardedness.

2:237

And do not forget the favor between you.

2:237

God is indeed All-Seeing of what you do.

2:238

Preserve the Contacts, and the most perfect Contact, and stand before God, devoted.

2:239

And if you fear, then on foot or mounted;

2:239

and once secure, remember God as He has taught you what you did not know.

2:240

And those among you who are kept faithfully, forsaking wives — a recommendation in favor of their wives: an enjoyment until the anniversary, without expulsion;

2:240

but if they leave, no blame upon you for what they do with themselves, within what is recognized.

2:240

God is All-Powerful, Wise.

2:241

And for repudiated women, an enjoyment according to what is recognized:

2:241

a duty upon those who guard themselves.

2:242

Thus does God make His signs clear to you, perhaps you will reason.

2:243

Have you not seen those who went out of their abodes, by thousands, wary of death? God then said to them: "Die"; then He brought them back to life.

2:243

God surely holds a favor toward mankind,

2:243

but most men are not grateful.

2:244

And fight in the way of God, and know that God is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

2:245

Who, then, will make God a beautiful loan, which He will double for him many times over?

2:245

God tightens and extends,

2:245

and to Him you will be returned.

2:246

Have you not seen the court, among the Sons of Israel, after Moussa, when they said to an informant of theirs: "Raise up for us a king, that we may fight in the way of God"?

2:246

He said: "Might it be that, if combat were prescribed for you, you would not fight?"

2:246

They said: "And what reason would we have not to fight in the way of God, when we have been expelled from our abodes and from our sons?"

2:246

But when combat was prescribed for them, they turned their backs, except a small number of them.

2:246

And God is All-Knowing of the wrongdoers.

2:247

And their informant said to them: "God has indeed raised up for you Talut as king."

2:247

They said: "How would he have the dominion over us, when we have more right to it than he, and he has not been given ampleness of goods?"

2:247

He said: "God has indeed chosen him over you, and increased him in breadth of knowledge and constitution."

2:247

God gives His dominion to whom He wills.

2:247

God is Vast, All-Knowing.

2:248

And their informant said to them: "The sign of his dominion will be that the coffer comes to you, wherein is a tranquility from your Guardian, and a remnant of what the clan of Moussa and the clan of Harun left, carried by the Agents."

2:248

There is surely in that a sign for you, if you are believers.

2:249

When Talut set out with the armies, he said: "God is going to test you with a river: whoever drinks from it is not one of mine, and whoever does not feed on it is indeed one of mine — except one who draws a scoop with his hand."

2:249

They drank from it, except a small number of them.

2:249

Then, when he and those who had believed with him had traversed it, they said: "We have no strength today against Jalut and his armies."

2:249

Those who presumed that they would meet God said: "How many a small battalion has overcome a large battalion, with God's permission!"

2:249

God is with the patient.

And when they came out to face Jalut and his armies, they said: "Our Guardian, inundate us with patience, make firm our steps, and help us against the people who disown"; they routed them then, with God's permission,

and Dawud killed Jalut; God gave him dominion and wisdom, and taught him what He willed.

And were it not for God repelling men, some by others, the earth would indeed have been given over to corruption;

but God holds a favor toward all beings.

2:252

Those are the signs of God, which We recite to you in truth,

2:252

and you are surely among the envoys.

2:253

Those are the messengers:

2:253

We favored some of them above others.

2:253

Among them, there is one to whom God spoke,

2:253

and He elevated others in degrees.

2:253

And We gave Issa, son of Maryam, the clear proofs, and We fortified him with the sacred Influx.

2:253

And had God willed, those who came after them would not have fought one another, after the clear proofs had come to them;

2:253

but they diverged:

2:253

among them, there are some who believed, and some who disowned.

2:253

And had God willed, they would not have fought one another;

2:253

but God does what He wants.

2:254

O you who have believed! Spend from what We have provided you, before a day comes wherein there will be neither selling, nor friendship, nor intercession.

2:254

And those who disown — those are the wrongdoers.

2:255

God, there is no deity but Him,

2:255

the Living, the Self-Subsisting.

2:255

Neither somnolence nor sleep seizes Him.

2:255

To Him belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth.

2:255

Who, then, intercedes with Him, except with His permission?

2:255

He knows what is before them and what is behind them,

2:255

and they encompass nothing of His knowledge, except as far as He wills.

2:255

His Seat extends over the heavens and the earth,

2:255

and their preservation weighs on Him not at all.

2:255

He is the Most High, the Immense.

2:256

No compulsion in the Law:

2:256

rectitude of judgment has become distinct from errancy.

2:256

Whoever disowns the Overreacher and believes in God has held firmly to the surest handhold, which never breaks.

2:256

God is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

2:257

God is the protector of those who have believed, He brings them out of the darknesses toward the light.

2:257

And those who disown, their protectors are the Overreacher, who brings them out of the light toward the darknesses.

2:257

Those are the companions of the Fire, they abide therein eternally.

2:258

Have you not seen him who disputed with Ibrahim about his Guardian, because God had given him dominion? When Ibrahim said: "My Guardian is He who gives life and causes death",

2:258

he said: "I give life and cause death."

2:258

Ibrahim said: "God indeed brings the sun from the east; bring it, then, from the west"; so the one who disowned was left with his words unraveled.

2:258

And God does not guide the wrongdoing people.

2:259

Or like him who passed by a city, empty despite its edifices.

2:259

He said: "How will God bring this back to life, after its death?" God then caused him to die for a hundred years, then He raised him.

2:259

He said: "How long have you remained?"

2:259

He said: "I have remained a day, or part of a day."

2:259

He said: "No, you have remained a hundred years.

2:259

Look, then, at your food and your drink: they have not waited;

2:259

and look at your donkey —

2:259

and so that We may make of you a sign for mankind.

2:259

And look at the bones, how We deploy them, then clothe them with flesh.

2:259

When this had become clear to him, he said: "I know that God is capable of all things."

2:260

And when Ibrahim said: "My Guardian, show me how You bring the dead back to life."

2:260

He said: "Do you not believe, then?"

2:260

He said: "Yes, but it is so that my core may be calmed."

2:260

He said: "Take, then, four birds, tame them to yourself, then place, on each mountain, a part of them, then call them: they will come to you at a run.

2:260

And know that God is All-Powerful, Wise."

2:261

The example of those who spend their goods in the way of God is that of a grain which grows seven ears,

2:261

each ear bearing a hundred grains.

2:261

God doubles for whom He wills.

2:261

God is Vast, All-Knowing.

2:262

Those who spend their goods in the way of God, then do not hold what they spent over anyone, nor follow it with nuisance, have their reward with their Guardian; no fear upon them, and they will not grieve.

2:263

A recognized saying and forgiveness are better than charity followed by nuisance.

2:263

God is Self-Sufficient, Forbearing.

2:264

O you who have believed! Do not render your acts of charity vain by holding them over others and by causing nuisance, like one who spends his goods for show before men, and believes neither in God nor in the Last Day.

2:264

His example is that of a smooth rock covered with earth: a torrential rain strikes it, and leaves it bare.

2:264

They hold nothing of what they have earned.

2:264

And God does not guide the people who disown.

2:265

And the example of those who spend their goods, seeking the good pleasure of God and the strengthening of their own Selves, is that of a garden on a height: a torrential rain strikes it, and it gives its fare twofold; and if no torrential rain strikes it, then a drizzle.

2:265

And God is All-Seeing of what you do.

2:266

Would one of you like to have a garden of palm trees and vines, beneath which rivers flow, wherein he would have all kinds of fruits, then old age strikes him, while he has weak descendants, and a whirlwind of fire strikes it, and it burns?

2:266

Thus does God make the signs clear to you, perhaps you will reflect.

2:267

O you who have believed! Spend of the wholesome things you have earned, and of what We have brought forth for you from the earth,

2:267

and do not aim at what is vile of it to spend, when you would not take it yourselves except by closing your eyes to it.

2:267

And know that God is Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy.

2:268

The Diverter promises you poverty, and orders you to indecency,

2:268

while God promises you, from Himself, a forgiveness and a favor.

2:268

God is Vast, All-Knowing.

2:269

He gives wisdom to whom He wills,

2:269

and whoever receives wisdom has received an abundant good.

2:269

And only the possessors of intelligence remember.

2:270

And whatever expenditure you spend, or vow you make, God indeed knows it.

2:270

And the wrongdoers have no help.

2:271

If you make your acts of charity appear, that is excellent;

2:271

and if you hide them and give them to the poor, that is better for you, and it covers a part of your evil deeds.

2:271

And God is Intimately Acquainted with what you do.

2:272

It is not incumbent upon you to guide them,

2:272

but God guides whom He wills.

2:272

And whatever good you spend, it is for yourselves.

2:272

And you spend only seeking the direction of God.

2:272

And whatever good you spend, it will be faithfully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged.

2:273

This belongs to the poor who are impeded in the way of God, unable to travel through the land: the ignorant thinks them rich, so much do they refrain;

2:273

you recognize them by their marks: they do not ask men insistently.

2:273

And whatever good you spend, God is indeed All-Knowing of it.

2:274

Those who spend their goods by night and by day, secretly and openly, have their reward with their Guardian; no fear upon them, and they will not grieve.

2:275

Those who devour usury rise only as one rises whom the Diverter sends staggering by his touch.

2:275

That is because they said: "Selling is only ever like usury";

2:275

but God has permitted selling, and prohibited usury.

2:275

Whoever, an admonition from his Guardian having reached him, ceases, has what is bygone,

2:275

and his matter rests with God;

2:275

but whoever relapses — those are the companions of the Fire, they abide therein eternally.

2:276

God brings usury to naught, and makes acts of charity swell.

2:276

God does not love any great disowner, transgressor.

2:277

Indeed, those who have believed, done sound deeds, maintained the Contact, and given pure liberality, have their reward with their Guardian; no fear upon them, and they will not grieve.

2:278

O you who have believed! Guard yourselves toward God, and forsake what remains of usury, if you are believers.

2:279

If you do not do it, then regard yourselves as forewarned of a war from God and His messenger;

2:279

and if you turn back, the principal of your goods belongs to you, without your doing wrong or being wronged.

2:280

And if someone is in hardship, then a delay until ease;

2:280

and that you remit it as charity is better for you, if you knew.

2:281

And guard yourselves against a day when you will be returned to God,

2:281

when every Self will be faithfully repaid for what it has earned, without being wronged.

2:282

O you who have believed! When you contract a debt between yourselves for an appointed term, put it in writing.

2:282

And let a scribe write it between you with justice,

2:282

and let no scribe refuse to write,

2:282

according to what God has taught him; let him write, then,

2:282

and let him upon whom the due rests dictate, and let him guard himself toward God, his Guardian, and not diminish anything of it.

2:282

And if he upon whom the due rests is foolish, or weak, or cannot dictate himself, let his legal guardian dictate, then, with justice.

2:282

And call two witnesses from among your men to witness it;

2:282

and if there are not two men, then a man and two women, from among those whose testimony you approve, so that if one of the two strays, the other may remind her.

2:282

And let not the witnesses refuse, when they are called.

2:282

And do not tire of writing it down, small or large, until its term.

2:282

That is more equitable with God, more upright for testimony, and closer to not doubting — except if it is an immediate trade that you conduct among yourselves: no blame then upon you for not writing it down.

2:282

And take witnesses when you make a sale among yourselves.

2:282

And let no harm be done to either the scribe or the witness.

2:282

And if you do, it is indeed an overstepping on your part.

2:282

And guard yourselves toward God,

2:282

and God teaches you.

2:282

And God is All-Knowing of all things.

2:283

And if you are on a journey and find no scribe, then a pledge taken.

2:283

And if one of you trusts another, let him to whom the trust was given discharge his trust,

2:283

and let him guard himself toward God, his Guardian.

2:283

And do not withhold testimony.

2:283

And whoever withholds it has indeed a transgressive core.

2:283

God is All-Knowing of what you do.

2:284

To God belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth.

2:284

Whether you make what is within you appear, or hide it, God will call you to account for it; He forgives, then, whom He wills, and He punishes whom He wills.

2:284

And God is capable of all things.

2:285

The messenger has believed in what has been sent down to him from his Guardian, and the believers.

2:285

All have believed in God, His Agents, His scriptures, and His messengers:

2:285

"We make no distinction between any of His messengers";

2:285

and they said: "We have heard and we have deferred.

2:285

Your forgiveness, our Guardian; to You is the destination."

2:286

God imposes upon no Self except its capacity.

2:286

To it what it has earned,

2:286

and against it what it has committed.

2:286

"Our Guardian, do not hold us to account if we forget or if we make a mistake.

2:286

Our Guardian, and do not make us bear a yoke as You made those before us bear it.

2:286

Our Guardian, and do not make us bear what we do not have the strength to bear.

2:286

And overlook it for us,

2:286

and forgive us,

2:286

and have benevolence on us.

2:286

You are our nearest Guarantor; help us, then, against the people who disown."
