Yusuf

The Finest of Accounts

In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent.

12:1

Alif. Lam. Ra.

الر

12:1

These are the signs of the explicit Scripture.

12:2

We have sent it down as a flawless Recitation, perhaps you will reason.

12:3

We relate to you the finest of accounts, by revealing to you this Recitation, though you were indeed, before it, among the heedless.

12:4

When Youssof said to his father: "O my father, I saw eleven heavenly bodies, and the sun and the moon,

12:4

I saw them prostrate before me."

12:5

He said: "O my little one, do not relate your vision to your brothers, or they will scheme against you with a scheme:

12:5

the Diverter is, to the human being, a manifest enemy.

12:6

And it is thus that your Guardian will elect you and teach you the prediction of events,

12:6

and He will complete His blessing upon you and upon the clan of Yaacoub, as He completed it before upon your two ancestors, Ibrahim and Ishaq.

Your Guardian is indeed All-Knowing, Wise."

12:7

There were indeed, in Youssof and his brothers, signs for those who ask.

12:8

When they said: "Youssof and his brother are dearer to our father than we, though we are a close-knit group:

12:8

our father is surely in manifest error.

12:9

Kill Youssof, or deport him to some land, so that your father's face may be freed for you alone, and that you may be, after that, sound people."

12:10

One of them said: "Do not kill Youssof, but throw him into the depths of the well: some travelers will pick him up, if you must act."

12:11

They said: "O our father, what is it with you, that you do not trust us with Youssof, when we are surely sincere counselors to him?

12:12

Send him with us tomorrow, that he may enjoy himself and play; we will surely be his preservers."

He said: "It surely grieves me that you take him, and I fear the wolf may devour him while you are heedless of him."

They said: "If the wolf were to devour him, while we are a close-knit group, we would then surely be losers."

12:15

When they took him away and agreed to put him in the depths of the well — and We revealed to him: "You will surely inform them of this affair, while they do not sense it" —

they came to their father in the evening, weeping, and said: "O our father, we indeed went off racing and left Youssof with our baggage, and the wolf devoured him.

But you will not give us credit, even if we are veracious."

They brought his shirt stained with lying blood.

12:18

He said: "Rather, your Self has suggested a course to you.

12:18

Gracious patience!

12:18

And it is with God that help must be sought against what you describe."

12:19

Travelers arrived; they sent their water-drawer, who let down his bucket. He said: "Good news! Here is a boy!"

They kept him secret as merchandise —

but God was All-Knowing of what they were doing.

And they sold him for a docked price, a few numbered coins: they attached little importance to him.

12:21

And the one who bought him, in Egypt, said to his wife: "Make his sojourn honorable; it may be that he will be useful to us, or that we adopt him as a son."

12:21

And thus We established Youssof on that land, and so as to teach him the prediction of events —

12:21

God is victorious in His purpose,

12:21

but most men do not know.

12:22

And when he reached his full maturity, We gave him judgment and knowledge:

thus do We recompense those who do good.

12:23

She in whose house he was sought to obtain him from himself; she bolted the doors and said: "Come here."

He said: "Refuge in God!

12:23

He is my master: he has made my sojourn excellent:

the wrongdoers indeed do not succeed."

And she certainly had an intention toward him,

12:24

and he would have had one toward her, had he not seen the demonstration of his Guardian:

thus it was, so that We might turn away from him evil and indecency:

he was indeed among Our refined obedient ones.

They both raced to the door, and she tore his shirt from behind, and they found her chief at the door.

She said: "What is the recompense of one who intends evil against your family, except prison or a painful punishment?"

12:26

He said: "It is she who sought to obtain me from myself."

12:27

A witness from her family bore witness: "If his shirt is torn from the front, she speaks truly, and he is among the liars; but if his shirt is torn from behind, she has lied,

12:27

and he is among the veracious."

12:28

When he saw that his shirt was torn from behind, he said: "This is of your scheme: your scheme is indeed immense.

12:29

Youssof, turn away from this;

and you, ask forgiveness for your offense: you are among those at fault."

12:30

And women, in the Capital, said: "The wife of the Powerful One is seeking to obtain her young man from himself: he has indeed captivated her with love;

we surely see her in manifest error."

When she heard of their plot, she invited them and made ready for them something to recline on; she gave each of them a knife, and said: "Come out before them."

12:31

When they saw him, they found him so great that they cut their hands, saying: "Far be it from God! This is no human:

12:31

this is nothing but a noble Agent."

She said: "This is the one about whom you censured me.

I indeed sought to obtain him from himself, but he held firmly to his safeguard;

and if he does not do what I order him, he will surely be imprisoned, and will surely be among the diminished."

12:33

He said: "My Guardian, prison is dearer to me than what they call me to; and if You do not turn their scheme away from me, I will yearn toward them and be among the ignorant."

12:34

His Guardian answered him and turned their scheme away from him:

12:34

it is indeed He, the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

Then it occurred to them, after seeing the signs, that they should imprison him for a time.

Two young men entered the prison with him.

One of them said: "I saw myself pressing wine."

And the other said: "I saw myself carrying bread on my head, from which the birds were eating.

Inform us of its prediction: we see you among those who do good."

He said: "No food with which you are provided will be brought to you without my informing you of its prediction before it reaches you:

that is part of what my Guardian has taught me.

12:37

I have indeed left the doctrine of a people who do not believe in God, and who disown the last life,

12:38

and I have followed the doctrine of my ancestors, Ibrahim, Ishaq, and Yaacoub:

12:38

it is not for us to associate anything with God.

That is part of God's favor upon us and upon mankind,

but most men are not grateful.

12:39

O my two prison companions, are divided masters better, or God, the One, the Subjugator?

12:40

What you obey, besides Him, is nothing but attributes you have named, you and your ancestors, without God having sent down any authority for it:

12:40

judgment belongs only to God:

12:40

He has commanded that you obey none but Him:

12:40

that is the upright Law,

but most men do not know.

O my two prison companions, one of you will give his master wine to drink;

as for the other, he will be crucified, and the birds will eat from his head.

The matter on which you both consulted me is decided."

12:42

And he said to the one of the two he presumed would be saved: "Remember me to your master."

12:42

But the Diverter made him forget to mention this to his master, and he remained in prison for some years.

And the king said: "I see seven fat cows being devoured by seven lean ones, and seven green ears of grain and others withered:

12:43

O court, enlighten me about my vision, if you can cross through visions."

They said: "A jumble of confused dreams,

and we are not versed in the prediction of dreams."

And the one of the two who had been saved said, remembering after a long while: "I will inform you of its prediction: so send me forth."

12:46

"Youssof, veracious man, enlighten us about the seven fat cows devoured by seven lean ones, and the seven green ears of grain and others withered, perhaps I will return to men, perhaps they will know."

12:47

He said: "You shall cultivate for seven years, assiduously;

12:47

and what you have harvested, keep it in its ear, except the little that you eat.

12:48

Then there will come, after that, seven severe years, which will consume what you had prepared for them, except the little you protect.

12:49

Then there will come, after that, a year in which mankind will receive the saving rain, and in which they will press."

And the king said: "Bring him to me."

12:50

When the messenger came to him, he said: "Return to your master, and ask him how it stands with the women who cut their hands:

12:50

my Guardian is indeed All-Knowing of their scheme."

12:51

He said: "What was your case, when you sought to obtain Youssof from himself?"

12:51

They said: "Far be it from God! We know no evil of him."

12:51

The wife of the Powerful One said: "Now the truth breaks out: it is I who sought to obtain him from himself, and he is surely among the veracious.

12:52

This, so that he may know that I did not betray him in his absence, and that God does not guide the scheme of traitors.

12:53

And I do not acquit my Self:

12:53

the Self surely incites to evil, except one to whom my Guardian shows benevolence.

12:53

My Guardian is indeed Most-Forgiving, Benevolent."

12:54

And the king said: "Bring him to me: I shall make him exclusively my own."

12:54

When he had spoken to him, he said: "You are, today, with us, in a position of authority, trustworthy."

12:55

He said: "Place me in charge of the treasuries of this land: I am a knowledgeable preserver."

12:56

And thus We established Youssof on that land, settling there wherever he willed:

We grant Our benevolence to whom We will, and We do not let the reward of those who do good dissipate.

And the reward of the last life is indeed better for those who believe and guard themselves.

12:58

The brothers of Youssof came and entered upon him; he recognized them, but they did not recognize him.

When he had outfitted them with their supplies, he said: "Bring me a brother of yours from your father's side.

Do you not see that I give the measure faithfully and am the best of hosts?

And if you do not bring him to me, you will have no more measure with me, and you shall not approach me again."

They said: "We shall seek to obtain him from his father, we shall surely do it."

12:62

And he said to his young men: "Put their merchandise back in their saddlebags, perhaps they will recognize it when they get back to their people, perhaps they will return."

When they returned to their father, they said: "O our father, measure has been withheld from us; so send our brother with us, we shall obtain measure, and we will surely be his preservers."

He said: "Shall I trust you with him otherwise than as I trusted you before with his brother?

12:64

God is the best preserver,

and He is the most benevolent of the benevolent."

When they opened their baggage, they found their merchandise, which had been restored to them. They said: "O our father, what more could we seek?

Here is our merchandise, restored to us; we shall victual our family, preserve our brother, and obtain an extra camel's measure:

that is an easy measure."

He said: "I will not send him with you, until you bring me a solemn engagement before God, that you will bring him back to me, unless you are encompassed."

12:66

When they had brought him their solemn engagement, he said: "God is trustee over what we say."

12:67

And he said: "O my sons, do not enter by a single gate, but enter by separate gates;

12:67

I can be of no use to you against God:

12:67

judgment belongs only to God;

12:67

to Him I entrust myself,

12:67

and let those who entrust themselves entrust themselves to Him."

12:68

When they entered as their father had commanded them, it was of no use to them against God, except for a need in Yaacoub's Self, which he satisfied;

he surely possessed knowledge We had taught him,

but most men do not know.

12:69

When they entered upon Youssof, he took his brother in with him,

and said: "I am, indeed, your brother: so do not grieve over what they were doing."

When he had outfitted them with their supplies, he placed the cup in his brother's saddlebag; then a herald proclaimed: "O caravan, you are surely thieves!"

They said, turning toward them: "What are you missing?"

They said: "We are missing the king's measuring vessel;

whoever brings it will have a camel's freight, and I stand guarantor for it."

They said: "By God, you well know we did not come to sow corruption on this land, and we are not thieves."

They said: "What then will be his recompense, if you are liars?"

They said: "His recompense: he in whose saddlebag it is found shall himself be the recompense.

Thus do we recompense the wrongdoers."

He began with their bags before his brother's bag, then drew it out of his brother's bag:

12:76

thus did We scheme for Youssof:

12:76

he could not, under the king's law, take his brother, unless God willed it.

12:76

We elevate in degrees whom We will,

12:76

and above every possessor of knowledge, there is one who knows.

They said: "If he has stolen, a brother of his had already stolen before."

12:77

Youssof kept this secret within himself and did not make it appear to them;

he said: "You have the worst place,

and God knows best what you describe."

12:78

They said: "O Powerful One, he has a father, a very old man; so take one of us in his place: we see you among those who do good."

He said: "Refuge in God from our taking anyone other than the one with whom we found our item: we would then surely be wrongdoers."

12:80

When they had lost all hope of him, they retired into secret talk.

The eldest among them said: "Do you not know that your father took a solemn engagement from you before God,

12:80

and that before this you neglected your duty toward Youssof?

I shall not leave this land, then, until my father gives me permission, or God judges in my favor:

He is the best of judges.

Return to your father, and say: 'O our father, your son has indeed stolen;

12:81

and we attest only to what we know, and we could not preserve what escaped the senses.

Ask the city where we were, and the caravan with which we returned: we are surely veracious.'"

12:83

He said: "Rather, your Self has suggested a course to you.

12:83

Gracious patience!

12:83

It may be that God will bring them all back to me:

it is indeed He, the All-Knowing, the Wise."

12:84

And he turned his back on them and said: "O my bitterness, for Youssof!"

12:84

And his eyes turned white from grief, while he suppressed his sorrow.

12:85

They said: "By God, you will not cease to remember Youssof, until you are worn out or until you perish."

12:86

He said: "I complain of my outpouring and my grief only to God,

12:86

and I know, from God, what you do not know.

12:87

O my sons, go and inquire about Youssof and his brother, and do not lose hope of God's rest:

12:87

none loses hope of God's rest, except the people who disown."

12:88

When they entered upon him, they said: "O Powerful One, harm has touched us and our family, and we have come with merchandise of little value:

so give us the measure faithfully, and give us charity:

God recompenses those who give in charity."

12:89

He said: "Do you know what you did to Youssof and his brother, when you were ignorant?"

12:90

They said: "Is it really you, Youssof?"

12:90

He said: "I am Youssof, and this is my brother.

God has indeed graced us:

whoever guards himself and is patient — God indeed does not let the reward of those who do good dissipate."

12:91

They said: "By God, God has indeed preferred you over us, and we were indeed at fault."

12:92

He said: "No reproach upon you:

12:92

today, God forgives you,

12:92

He is the most benevolent of the benevolent.

Go with this shirt of mine, and cast it upon my father's face: he will regain his sight. Then bring me your whole family."

12:94

When the caravan had set off, their father said: "I surely sense the scent of Youssof, if you do not think me a dotard."

They said: "By God, you are surely in your old error."

When the bearer of good tidings arrived, he cast it upon his face, and he at once regained his sight.

He said: "Did I not tell you that I know, from God, what you do not know?"

They said: "O our father, ask forgiveness for our offenses: we were indeed at fault."

He said: "I shall soon ask forgiveness for you from my Guardian:

it is indeed He, the Most-Forgiving, the Benevolent."

12:99

When they entered upon Youssof, he took his father and mother in with him, and said: "Enter Egypt, if God wills, in security."

12:100

And he elevated his father and mother upon the edifice, and they fell down before him in prostration.

12:100

And he said: "O my father, this is the prediction of my vision of old: my Guardian has made it true.

12:100

He has been bountiful to me, when He brought me out of prison, and brought you from the countryside, after the Diverter had sown discord between me and my brothers.

12:100

My Guardian is Subtle in what He wills:

12:100

it is indeed He, the All-Knowing, the Wise.

12:101

My Guardian, You have granted me a share of the dominion, and taught me the prediction of events.

12:101

Originator of the heavens and the earth, You are my protector in the present life and in the last life: keep me faithfully, true to You alone, and join me with those who are sound."

12:102

That is part of the information about what escapes the senses, which We reveal to you:

you were not with them when they agreed on their affair while plotting.

And most men, however keen you may be, are not believers.

And you ask of them, for this, no reward:

12:104

it is only a reminder for all beings.

12:105

How many signs, in the heavens and on the earth, do they pass by, turning away from them!

12:106

And most of them do not believe in God without associating with Him.

12:107

Are they then sure that a cover of God's punishment will not come to them, or that the Hour will not come to them unexpectedly, without their sensing it?

12:108

Say: "This is my way: I call to God.

12:108

With full clear-sightedness, myself and those who follow me.

12:108

Glory be to God!

12:108

And I am not among those who associate."

And We sent, before you, none but men to whom We revealed, from among the people of the cities.

Have they not traveled through the earth and looked at what was the end of those before them?

And the abode of the last life is indeed better for those who guarded themselves:

will you not then reason?

12:110

Until, when the messengers had lost all hope and presumed they had been denied, Our help came to them, and whom We willed was saved,

and Our rigor is not turned away from the severed people.

12:111

There was indeed, in their account, a lesson for the possessors of intelligence:

it was not an invented discourse,

but the confirmation of what precedes it, the detail of everything, and a guidance and a benevolence for a people who believe.
