Core meaning
Two families the text does not connect. ءَايَة, the sign: any mark that makes one see beyond itself, a phenomenon of creation, recited speech, an object or a person; and the particles built on أَىّ, "which", that call, question, insist or count.
Uses
ءَايَة, ءَايَٰت (creation) → "sign", "signs" : the phenomenon that points to the One who made it.
ءَايَٰت (speech) → "signs" : the words the messenger recites, named by the same word.
ءَايَة (object, person) → "sign" : a thing or a being that God sets up as a mark.
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا → "O you who …", "O …" : the call, which designates those addressed.
أَىّ, فَبِأَىِّ → "which", "in what" : the question that makes one choose among several.
إِيَّا + pronoun → "it is … that" : the object pronoun placed first, to reserve the act for one alone.
كَأَيِّن → "how many a …!" : the great number, said with wonder.
Evidence from the text
The text has only one word for the phenomenon and for speech. The creation of the heavens and the earth, the variety of tongues and colours, sleep are "among His signs" (30:22-23); and what the messenger recites bears the same name: "Those are the signs of God, which We recite to you in truth" (45:6). The sign can also be an object, the coffer that marks Talout's dominion (2:248), or a man, the one to whom God gives life after a hundred years (2:259). What makes the sign is not its matter but its function: to make one see beyond it.
The refrain "There is surely in that a sign" (26:8, then seven times in the same sura) or "signs for a people who believe" (16:79, 29:24, 30:37, 39:52) often says for whom the sign is one: it does not impose itself, it is received.
The particles form another family, built on أَىّ, "which". They call (يَٰٓأَيُّهَا, more than a hundred and forty times), question (the refrain of sura 55, thirty-one times), carry the pronoun placed first to reserve the act for one alone (1:5), or count (3:146, 22:45, 22:48). None carries the sense of sign: the entry keeps them apart.
Distinctions
- بين — the clear proof: what separates and makes distinct, whereas the sign points beyond itself
- عبر — the lesson drawn by passing from the fact to the meaning
