Al-Hijr
Until Certainty Comes
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent.
Alif. Lam. Ra.
الٓر
These are the signs of the Scripture, and of a clear Recitation.
تِلْكَ ءَايَٰتُ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ وَقُرْءَانٍۢ مُّبِينٍۢ
Many a time, those who disown would like to have been true to God alone.
رُّبَمَا يَوَدُّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَوْ كَانُوا۟ مُسْلِمِينَ
Let them be: let them eat, let them enjoy themselves, and let hope distract them:
ذَرْهُمْ يَأْكُلُوا۟ وَيَتَمَتَّعُوا۟ وَيُلْهِهِمُ ٱلْأَمَلُ
they will soon know.
فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ
We have not annihilated any city without it having had, concerning it, a known register.
وَمَآ أَهْلَكْنَا مِن قَرْيَةٍ إِلَّا وَلَهَا كِتَابٌۭ مَّعْلُومٌۭ
No community precedes its term, nor delays it.
مَّا تَسْبِقُ مِنْ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلَهَا وَمَا يَسْتَـْٔخِرُونَ
And they said: "O you upon whom the Reminder has been sent down, you are surely deranged! Why do you not bring us the Agents, if you are among the veracious?"
وَقَالُوا۟ يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِى نُزِّلَ عَلَيْهِ ٱلذِّكْرُ إِنَّكَ لَمَجْنُونٌۭ لَّوْ مَا تَأْتِينَا بِٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ
We do not send down the Agents except with truth,
مَا نُنَزِّلُ ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةَ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ
and then, they would be granted no reprieve.
وَمَا كَانُوٓا۟ إِذًۭا مُّنظَرِينَ
It is We who have sent down the Reminder,
إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا ٱلذِّكْرَ
and We are surely its preservers.
وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَحَٰفِظُونَ
We have indeed sent messengers before you, among the factions of the ancients,
وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا مِن قَبْلِكَ فِى شِيَعِ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
and no messenger ever came to them but they mocked him.
وَمَا يَأْتِيهِم مِّن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ
Thus We insert it into the cores of the severed: they do not believe in it, though the norm of the ancients has already passed.
كَذَٰلِكَ نَسْلُكُهُۥ فِى قُلُوبِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِۦ وَقَدْ خَلَتْ سُنَّةُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
And even if We opened for them a gate of the sky, through which they would stay ascending, they would say: "Our sight is only befuddled; we are rather a people abused by illusion."
وَلَوْ فَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِم بَابًۭا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ فَظَلُّوا۟ فِيهِ يَعْرُجُونَ لَقَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَا سُكِّرَتْ أَبْصَٰرُنَا بَلْ نَحْنُ قَوْمٌۭ مَّسْحُورُونَ
We have indeed placed in the sky constellations, and adorned them for those who look, and preserved them from every banished Diverter — except one who steals a furtive hearing, and is then pursued by a manifest blazing projectile.
وَلَقَدْ جَعَلْنَا فِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ بُرُوجًۭا وَزَيَّنَّٰهَا لِلنَّٰظِرِينَ وَحَفِظْنَٰهَا مِن كُلِّ شَيْطَٰنٍۢ رَّجِيمٍ إِلَّا مَنِ ٱسْتَرَقَ ٱلسَّمْعَ فَأَتْبَعَهُۥ شِهَابٌۭ مُّبِينٌۭ
And the earth, We spread it out, and cast upon it firm anchors, and caused to grow upon it everything weighed, and We made for you therein means of livelihood,
وَٱلْأَرْضَ مَدَدْنَٰهَا وَأَلْقَيْنَا فِيهَا رَوَٰسِىَ وَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ شَىْءٍۢ مَّوْزُونٍۢ وَجَعَلْنَا لَكُمْ فِيهَا مَعَٰيِشَ
as well as for those whose providers you are not.
وَمَن لَّسْتُمْ لَهُۥ بِرَٰزِقِينَ
And there is nothing whose treasuries We do not hold,
وَإِن مِّن شَىْءٍ إِلَّا عِندَنَا خَزَآئِنُهُۥ
and We send it down only according to a known measure.
وَمَا نُنَزِّلُهُۥٓ إِلَّا بِقَدَرٍۢ مَّعْلُومٍۢ
And We sent the fecundating winds, and then sent down from the sky a water with which We gave you drink, and which you do not hold in reserve.
وَأَرْسَلْنَا ٱلرِّيَٰحَ لَوَٰقِحَ فَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءًۭ فَأَسْقَيْنَٰكُمُوهُ وَمَآ أَنتُمْ لَهُۥ بِخَٰزِنِينَ
And it is surely We who give life and cause death, and it is We who are the heirs.
وَإِنَّا لَنَحْنُ نُحْىِۦ وَنُمِيتُ وَنَحْنُ ٱلْوَٰرِثُونَ
We indeed know those among you who go first, and We indeed know those who lag behind.
وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا ٱلْمُسْتَقْدِمِينَ مِنكُمْ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا ٱلْمُسْتَـْٔخِرِينَ
And it is your Guardian who will gather them:
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ يَحْشُرُهُمْ
He is Wise, All-Knowing.
إِنَّهُۥ حَكِيمٌ عَلِيمٌۭ
We have indeed created the human being from resonant clay, from molded mud,
وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ مِن صَلْصَٰلٍۢ مِّنْ حَمَإٍۢ مَّسْنُونٍۢ
and the Occulted, We had created them before, from a fire of torrid wind.
وَٱلْجَآنَّ خَلَقْنَٰهُ مِن قَبْلُ مِن نَّارِ ٱلسَّمُومِ
And when your Guardian said to the Agents: "I am indeed going to create a human from resonant clay, from molded mud; when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My Influx, bow before him in prostration."
وَإِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ إِنِّى خَٰلِقٌۢ بَشَرًۭا مِّن صَلْصَٰلٍۢ مِّنْ حَمَإٍۢ مَّسْنُونٍۢ فَإِذَا سَوَّيْتُهُۥ وَنَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِى فَقَعُوا۟ لَهُۥ سَٰجِدِينَ
The Agents then prostrated, all together, except Iblis: he refused to be among those who prostrated.
فَسَجَدَ ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ كُلُّهُمْ أَجْمَعُونَ إِلَّآ إِبْلِيسَ أَبَىٰٓ أَن يَكُونَ مَعَ ٱلسَّٰجِدِينَ
He said: "O Iblis, what is with you, that you are not among those who prostrate?"
قَالَ يَٰٓإِبْلِيسُ مَا لَكَ أَلَّا تَكُونَ مَعَ ٱلسَّٰجِدِينَ
He said: "It is not for me to prostrate before a human You created from resonant clay, from molded mud."
قَالَ لَمْ أَكُن لِّأَسْجُدَ لِبَشَرٍ خَلَقْتَهُۥ مِن صَلْصَٰلٍۢ مِّنْ حَمَإٍۢ مَّسْنُونٍۢ
He said: "So get out of here, for you are now banished, and the curse will indeed weigh upon you until the Day of the Due."
قَالَ فَٱخْرُجْ مِنْهَا فَإِنَّكَ رَجِيمٌۭ وَإِنَّ عَلَيْكَ ٱللَّعْنَةَ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ
He said: "My Guardian, grant me then a delay until the day they are raised."
قَالَ رَبِّ فَأَنظِرْنِىٓ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ
He said: "You are among those granted a delay, until the day of the known moment."
قَالَ فَإِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلْمُنظَرِينَ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْوَقْتِ ٱلْمَعْلُومِ
He said: "My Guardian, for having let me err, I shall surely embellish for them what is on earth, and I shall surely make them all err, except Your obedient ones among them who are refined."
قَالَ رَبِّ بِمَآ أَغْوَيْتَنِى لَأُزَيِّنَنَّ لَهُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَأُغْوِيَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ إِلَّا عِبَادَكَ مِنْهُمُ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ
He said: "This is a path incumbent upon Me, a straight path.
قَالَ هَٰذَا صِرَٰطٌ عَلَىَّ مُسْتَقِيمٌ
Over My obedient ones, you indeed have no authority, except over whoever follows you among the errant."
إِنَّ عِبَادِى لَيْسَ لَكَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُلْطَٰنٌ إِلَّا مَنِ ٱتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ ٱلْغَاوِينَ
And Jahannam is surely their meeting-place, all of them; it has seven gates,
وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمَوْعِدُهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ لَهَا سَبْعَةُ أَبْوَٰبٍۢ
to each gate belongs a determined part of them.
لِّكُلِّ بَابٍۢ مِّنْهُمْ جُزْءٌۭ مَّقْسُومٌ
Those who guarded themselves will indeed be in gardens and springs: "Enter therein in peace, in security."
إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى جَنَّٰتٍۢ وَعُيُونٍ ٱدْخُلُوهَا بِسَلَٰمٍ ءَامِنِينَ
And We shall have removed from their chests all rancor,
وَنَزَعْنَا مَا فِى صُدُورِهِم مِّنْ غِلٍّ
brothers, upon couches, facing one another.
إِخْوَٰنًا عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍۢ مُّتَقَٰبِلِينَ
No fatigue will touch them therein,
لَا يَمَسُّهُمْ فِيهَا نَصَبٌۭ
and they will never be expelled from it.
وَمَا هُم مِّنْهَا بِمُخْرَجِينَ
Inform My obedient ones that it is I, the Most-Forgiving, the Benevolent, and that My punishment is the painful punishment.
نَبِّئْ عِبَادِىٓ أَنِّىٓ أَنَا ٱلْغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ وَأَنَّ عَذَابِى هُوَ ٱلْعَذَابُ ٱلْأَلِيمُ
And inform them about the guests of Ibrahim, when they entered upon him and said: "Peace!"
وَنَبِّئْهُمْ عَن ضَيْفِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ إِذْ دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالُوا۟ سَلَٰمًۭا
He said: "We are indeed trembling because of you."
قَالَ إِنَّا مِنكُمْ وَجِلُونَ
They said: "Do not tremble: we bring you glad tidings of a knowledgeable boy."
قَالُوا۟ لَا تَوْجَلْ إِنَّا نُبَشِّرُكَ بِغُلَٰمٍ عَلِيمٍۢ
He said: "Do you give me this glad tiding, when old age has touched me? Of what then do you give me tidings?"
قَالَ أَبَشَّرْتُمُونِى عَلَىٰٓ أَن مَّسَّنِىَ ٱلْكِبَرُ فَبِمَ تُبَشِّرُونَ
They said: "We bring you this glad tiding in truth: so do not be among those who lose heart."
قَالُوا۟ بَشَّرْنَٰكَ بِٱلْحَقِّ فَلَا تَكُن مِّنَ ٱلْقَٰنِطِينَ
He said: "And who loses heart regarding his Guardian's benevolence, except the astray?"
قَالَ وَمَن يَقْنَطُ مِن رَّحْمَةِ رَبِّهِۦٓ إِلَّا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ
He said: "What then is your case, O envoys?"
قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَ
They said: "We are sent to a severed people, except the clan of Lut.
قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّآ أُرْسِلْنَآ إِلَىٰ قَوْمٍۢ مُّجْرِمِينَ إِلَّآ ءَالَ لُوطٍ
We shall surely save them all, except his wife: We have determined that she is indeed among those who linger behind."
إِنَّا لَمُنَجُّوهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ إِلَّا ٱمْرَأَتَهُۥ قَدَّرْنَآ إِنَّهَا لَمِنَ ٱلْغَٰبِرِينَ
And when the envoys came to the clan of Lut, he said: "You are people I do not recognize."
فَلَمَّا جَآءَ ءَالَ لُوطٍ ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَ قَالَ إِنَّكُمْ قَوْمٌۭ مُّنكَرُونَ
They said: "We bring you rather that about which they used to contend. We have come to you with the truth, and we are surely veracious.
قَالُوا۟ بَلْ جِئْنَٰكَ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ فِيهِ يَمْتَرُونَ وَأَتَيْنَٰكَ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَإِنَّا لَصَٰدِقُونَ
So depart with your family, at a time of the night, and follow behind them, and let none of you turn around, and go where you are commanded."
فَأَسْرِ بِأَهْلِكَ بِقِطْعٍۢ مِّنَ ٱلَّيْلِ وَٱتَّبِعْ أَدْبَٰرَهُمْ وَلَا يَلْتَفِتْ مِنكُمْ أَحَدٌۭ وَٱمْضُوا۟ حَيْثُ تُؤْمَرُونَ
And We decreed to him this command: the last remnant of those people would be cut off, by morning.
وَقَضَيْنَآ إِلَيْهِ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْأَمْرَ أَنَّ دَابِرَ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ مَقْطُوعٌۭ مُّصْبِحِينَ
And the people of the Capital came, exulting.
وَجَآءَ أَهْلُ ٱلْمَدِينَةِ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ
He said: "These are my guests: do not dishonor me,
قَالَ إِنَّ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ ضَيْفِى فَلَا تَفْضَحُونِ
and guard yourselves toward God, and do not disgrace me."
وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَلَا تُخْزُونِ
They said: "Did we not forbid you anyone at all?"
قَالُوٓا۟ أَوَلَمْ نَنْهَكَ عَنِ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ
He said: "Here are my daughters, if you must act."
قَالَ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ بَنَاتِىٓ إِن كُنتُمْ فَٰعِلِينَ
By your life, they were surely going about blindly in their intoxication.
لَعَمْرُكَ إِنَّهُمْ لَفِى سَكْرَتِهِمْ يَعْمَهُونَ
The Cry then seized them at daybreak, and We made its top its bottom, and rained upon them stones of formed clay.
فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّيْحَةُ مُشْرِقِينَ فَجَعَلْنَا عَٰلِيَهَا سَافِلَهَا وَأَمْطَرْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ حِجَارَةًۭ مِّن سِجِّيلٍ
There are surely in that signs for those who can read the marks.
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَٰتٍۢ لِّلْمُتَوَسِّمِينَ
And it is surely upon a way that endures.
وَإِنَّهَا لَبِسَبِيلٍۢ مُّقِيمٍ
There is surely in that a sign for the believers.
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَةًۭ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
And the companions of the Thicket were indeed wrongdoers,
وَإِن كَانَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْأَيْكَةِ لَظَٰلِمِينَ
so We took vengeance upon them,
فَٱنتَقَمْنَا مِنْهُمْ
and both are surely upon a manifest reference.
وَإِنَّهُمَا لَبِإِمَامٍۢ مُّبِينٍۢ
The companions of al-Hijr indeed denied the envoys,
وَلَقَدْ كَذَّبَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْحِجْرِ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ
and We gave them Our signs, but they turned away from them.
وَءَاتَيْنَٰهُمْ ءَايَٰتِنَا فَكَانُوا۟ عَنْهَا مُعْرِضِينَ
And they carved, in the mountains, houses, in complete security.
وَكَانُوا۟ يَنْحِتُونَ مِنَ ٱلْجِبَالِ بُيُوتًا ءَامِنِينَ
The Cry then seized them in the morning,
فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّيْحَةُ مُصْبِحِينَ
and what they had earned availed them nothing.
فَمَآ أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ
We created the heavens, the earth, and what is between them, only in truth.
وَمَا خَلَقْنَا ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَآ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ
And the Hour is surely coming:
وَإِنَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ لَءَاتِيَةٌۭ
so turn the page, with a gracious gesture.
فَٱصْفَحِ ٱلصَّفْحَ ٱلْجَمِيلَ
Your Guardian is indeed the Great Creator, the All-Knowing.
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ ٱلْخَلَّٰقُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ
We have indeed given you seven of the couplets, and the immense Recitation.
وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَٰكَ سَبْعًۭا مِّنَ ٱلْمَثَانِى وَٱلْقُرْءَانَ ٱلْعَظِيمَ
Do not extend your eyes toward what We have granted some pairs among them to enjoy,
لَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَيْنَيْكَ إِلَىٰ مَا مَتَّعْنَا بِهِۦٓ أَزْوَٰجًۭا مِّنْهُمْ
and do not grieve over them,
وَلَا تَحْزَنْ عَلَيْهِمْ
and lower your wing for the believers.
وَٱخْفِضْ جَنَاحَكَ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
And say: "I am, indeed, the clear warner" — as We sent it down upon those who divided it among themselves, those who made of this Recitation disparate fragments.
وَقُلْ إِنِّىٓ أَنَا ٱلنَّذِيرُ ٱلْمُبِينُ كَمَآ أَنزَلْنَا عَلَى ٱلْمُقْتَسِمِينَ ٱلَّذِينَ جَعَلُوا۟ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ عِضِينَ
By your Guardian, We shall surely question them all about what they used to do.
فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَسْـَٔلَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ عَمَّا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ
So proclaim openly what you are commanded,
فَٱصْدَعْ بِمَا تُؤْمَرُ
and turn away from those who associate.
وَأَعْرِضْ عَنِ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ
We have indeed sufficed you against the mockers, those who place, alongside God, another deity:
إِنَّا كَفَيْنَٰكَ ٱلْمُسْتَهْزِءِينَ ٱلَّذِينَ يَجْعَلُونَ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَٰهًا ءَاخَرَ
they will soon know.
فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ
We will indeed know that your chest tightens from what they say:
وَلَقَدْ نَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ يَضِيقُ صَدْرُكَ بِمَا يَقُولُونَ
so glorify, with praise, your Guardian, and be among those who prostrate,
فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَكُن مِّنَ ٱلسَّٰجِدِينَ
and obey your Guardian until certainty comes to you.
وَٱعْبُدْ رَبَّكَ حَتَّىٰ يَأْتِيَكَ ٱلْيَقِينُ
