An-Nahl
A Drink in Which There Is Healing
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent.
The command of God has come: so do not seek to hasten it.
أَتَىٰٓ أَمْرُ ٱللَّهِ فَلَا تَسْتَعْجِلُوهُ
Glory be to Him, and He is far above what you associate with Him.
سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ
He sends down the Agents with the Influx, by His command, upon whom He wills among His obedient ones: "Warn that there is no deity but Me; so guard yourselves before Me."
يُنَزِّلُ ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةَ بِٱلرُّوحِ مِنْ أَمْرِهِۦ عَلَىٰ مَن يَشَآءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِۦٓ أَنْ أَنذِرُوٓا۟ أَنَّهُۥ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنَا۠ فَٱتَّقُونِ
He created the heavens and the earth in truth.
خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ بِٱلْحَقِّ
He is far above what you associate with Him.
تَعَٰلَىٰ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ
He created the human being from a drop, and behold, he is a declared quarreler.
خَلَقَ ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ مِن نُّطْفَةٍۢ فَإِذَا هُوَ خَصِيمٌۭ مُّبِينٌۭ
And the cattle, He created them:
وَٱلْأَنْعَٰمَ خَلَقَهَا
in them you find warmth and benefits, and from them you eat.
لَكُمْ فِيهَا دِفْءٌۭ وَمَنَٰفِعُ وَمِنْهَا تَأْكُلُونَ
And in them you find a stateliness, when you bring them back in the evening and when you lead them out to pasture.
وَلَكُمْ فِيهَا جَمَالٌ حِينَ تُرِيحُونَ وَحِينَ تَسْرَحُونَ
And they carry your loads to a land you would not have reached except with great hardship on yourselves:
وَتَحْمِلُ أَثْقَالَكُمْ إِلَىٰ بَلَدٍۢ لَّمْ تَكُونُوا۟ بَٰلِغِيهِ إِلَّا بِشِقِّ ٱلْأَنفُسِ
your Guardian is surely full of kindness, Benevolent.
إِنَّ رَبَّكُمْ لَرَءُوفٌۭ رَّحِيمٌۭ
And horses, mules, and donkeys, for you to ride, and as adornment.
وَٱلْخَيْلَ وَٱلْبِغَالَ وَٱلْحَمِيرَ لِتَرْكَبُوهَا وَزِينَةًۭ
And He creates what you do not know.
وَيَخْلُقُ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
And to God belongs the marking out of the straight way; some of it veers off.
وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ قَصْدُ ٱلسَّبِيلِ وَمِنْهَا جَآئِرٌۭ
And had He willed, He would have guided you all.
وَلَوْ شَآءَ لَهَدَىٰكُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
It is He who sent down from the sky a water: from it you have a drink, and from it come trees where you graze your herds.
هُوَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَنزَلَ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءًۭ لَّكُم مِّنْهُ شَرَابٌۭ وَمِنْهُ شَجَرٌۭ فِيهِ تُسِيمُونَ
By it, He causes to grow for you the crops, the olive, the palms, the vines, and every kind of fruit:
يُنۢبِتُ لَكُم بِهِ ٱلزَّرْعَ وَٱلزَّيْتُونَ وَٱلنَّخِيلَ وَٱلْأَعْنَٰبَ وَمِن كُلِّ ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ
there is surely in that a sign for a people who reflect.
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَةًۭ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ
And He has subjected for you the night and the day, the sun and the moon; and the stars are subjected by His command.
وَسَخَّرَ لَكُمُ ٱلَّيْلَ وَٱلنَّهَارَ وَٱلشَّمْسَ وَٱلْقَمَرَ وَٱلنُّجُومُ مُسَخَّرَٰتٌۢ بِأَمْرِهِۦٓ
There are surely in that signs for a people who reason.
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَٰتٍۢ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يَعْقِلُونَ
And what He has scattered for you on the earth, of varied colors:
وَمَا ذَرَأَ لَكُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ مُخْتَلِفًا أَلْوَٰنُهُۥٓ
there is surely in that a sign for a people who remember.
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَةًۭ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يَذَّكَّرُونَ
It is He who has subjected the sea, so that you may eat from it fresh flesh and extract from it an ornament that you wear;
وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى سَخَّرَ ٱلْبَحْرَ لِتَأْكُلُوا۟ مِنْهُ لَحْمًۭا طَرِيًّۭا وَتَسْتَخْرِجُوا۟ مِنْهُ حِلْيَةًۭ تَلْبَسُونَهَا
and you see the vessels cleaving through it, so that you may seek of His favor, and perhaps you will be grateful.
وَتَرَى ٱلْفُلْكَ مَوَاخِرَ فِيهِ وَلِتَبْتَغُوا۟ مِن فَضْلِهِۦ وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ
And He cast upon the earth firm anchors, so that it would not sway beneath you, and rivers and ways, perhaps you will guide yourselves, and landmarks,
وَأَلْقَىٰ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ رَوَٰسِىَ أَن تَمِيدَ بِكُمْ وَأَنْهَٰرًۭا وَسُبُلًۭا لَّعَلَّكُمْ تَهْتَدُونَ وَعَلَٰمَٰتٍۢ
and it is by the star that they guide themselves.
وَبِٱلنَّجْمِ هُمْ يَهْتَدُونَ
Is He who creates then like one who does not create?
أَفَمَن يَخْلُقُ كَمَن لَّا يَخْلُقُ
Will you not then remember?
أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ
And if you numbered God's blessing, you could not enumerate it.
وَإِن تَعُدُّوا۟ نِعْمَةَ ٱللَّهِ لَا تُحْصُوهَآ
God is surely Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَغَفُورٌۭ رَّحِيمٌۭ
God knows what you keep secret and what you disclose.
وَٱللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ مَا تُسِرُّونَ وَمَا تُعْلِنُونَ
And those you invoke besides God create nothing; it is they who are created.
وَٱلَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ لَا يَخْلُقُونَ شَيْـًۭٔا وَهُمْ يُخْلَقُونَ
Dead, without life,
أَمْوَٰتٌ غَيْرُ أَحْيَآءٍۢ
and they do not sense when they will be raised.
وَمَا يَشْعُرُونَ أَيَّانَ يُبْعَثُونَ
Your deity is a single deity.
إِلَٰهُكُمْ إِلَٰهٌۭ وَٰحِدٌۭ
Those who do not believe in the last life have a disavowing core, and they grow proud.
فَٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱلْءَاخِرَةِ قُلُوبُهُم مُّنكِرَةٌۭ وَهُم مُّسْتَكْبِرُونَ
There is no doubt that God knows what they keep secret and what they disclose:
لَا جَرَمَ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَعْلَمُ مَا يُسِرُّونَ وَمَا يُعْلِنُونَ
He does not love those who grow proud.
إِنَّهُۥ لَا يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُسْتَكْبِرِينَ
And when it is said to them: "What has your Guardian sent down?" they say: "Legends of the ancients" — so as to bear, on the Day of Appearance, their burdens in full, and a portion of the burdens of those they mislead without knowledge:
وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُم مَّاذَآ أَنزَلَ رَبُّكُمْ قَالُوٓا۟ أَسَٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ لِيَحْمِلُوٓا۟ أَوْزَارَهُمْ كَامِلَةًۭ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ وَمِنْ أَوْزَارِ ٱلَّذِينَ يُضِلُّونَهُم بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ
how evil is the burden they bear!
أَلَا سَآءَ مَا يَزِرُونَ
Those before them indeed plotted; but God came to their structure from the foundations, so that the roof fell upon them from above, and the punishment came to them from where they did not sense it.
قَدْ مَكَرَ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ فَأَتَى ٱللَّهُ بُنْيَٰنَهُم مِّنَ ٱلْقَوَاعِدِ فَخَرَّ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّقْفُ مِن فَوْقِهِمْ وَأَتَىٰهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ
Then, on the Day of Appearance, He will cover them with disgrace and say: "Where are My associates, about whom you set yourselves in breach?"
ثُمَّ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ يُخْزِيهِمْ وَيَقُولُ أَيْنَ شُرَكَآءِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ كُنتُمْ تُشَٰٓقُّونَ فِيهِمْ
Those to whom knowledge was given will say: "Disgrace, today, and misfortune, are indeed upon those who disown" — those the Agents keep faithfully, wronging themselves.
قَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْعِلْمَ إِنَّ ٱلْخِزْىَ ٱلْيَوْمَ وَٱلسُّوٓءَ عَلَى ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ ٱلَّذِينَ تَتَوَفَّىٰهُمُ ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ ظَالِمِىٓ أَنفُسِهِمْ
They then offer their submission: "We were doing no evil!" — But yes!
فَأَلْقَوُا۟ ٱلسَّلَمَ مَا كُنَّا نَعْمَلُ مِن سُوٓءٍۭ بَلَىٰٓ
God is indeed All-Knowing of what you were doing.
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِيمٌۢ بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ
So enter the gates of Jahannam, to abide therein eternally:
فَٱدْخُلُوٓا۟ أَبْوَٰبَ جَهَنَّمَ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا
how wretched is the sojourn of the proud!
فَلَبِئْسَ مَثْوَى ٱلْمُتَكَبِّرِينَ
And it is said to those who guarded themselves: "What has your Guardian sent down?" They say: "Something good."
وَقِيلَ لِلَّذِينَ ٱتَّقَوْا۟ مَاذَآ أَنزَلَ رَبُّكُمْ قَالُوا۟ خَيْرًۭا
For those who do good, in the present life, there is beauty;
لِّلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا۟ فِى هَٰذِهِ ٱلدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةٌۭ
but the abode of the last life is better,
وَلَدَارُ ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ خَيْرٌۭ
and what an excellent abode is that of those who guard themselves!
وَلَنِعْمَ دَارُ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ
The Gardens of permanence, which they will enter, beneath which rivers flow; they will have therein whatever they will.
جَنَّٰتُ عَدْنٍۢ يَدْخُلُونَهَا تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَٰرُ لَهُمْ فِيهَا مَا يَشَآءُونَ
Thus God recompenses those who guard themselves, those the Agents keep faithfully while they are wholesome,
كَذَٰلِكَ يَجْزِى ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ ٱلَّذِينَ تَتَوَفَّىٰهُمُ ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ طَيِّبِينَ
saying: "Peace be upon you! Enter the Garden, for what you used to do."
يَقُولُونَ سَلَٰمٌ عَلَيْكُمُ ٱدْخُلُوا۟ ٱلْجَنَّةَ بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ
Do they then wait only for the Agents to come to them, or for the command of your Guardian to come?
هَلْ يَنظُرُونَ إِلَّآ أَن تَأْتِيَهُمُ ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ أَوْ يَأْتِىَ أَمْرُ رَبِّكَ
Thus did those before them act.
كَذَٰلِكَ فَعَلَ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ
God did not wrong them,
وَمَا ظَلَمَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ
but it was themselves that they wronged.
وَلَٰكِن كَانُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَ
The evils of what they did overtook them,
فَأَصَابَهُمْ سَيِّـَٔاتُ مَا عَمِلُوا۟
and what they used to mock enveloped them.
وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ
And those who associated said: "Had God willed, we would not have obeyed anything besides Him, neither we nor our ancestors, nor would we have held anything as prohibited besides Him."
وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَشْرَكُوا۟ لَوْ شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ مَا عَبَدْنَا مِن دُونِهِۦ مِن شَىْءٍۢ نَّحْنُ وَلَآ ءَابَآؤُنَا وَلَا حَرَّمْنَا مِن دُونِهِۦ مِن شَىْءٍۢ
Thus did those before them act.
كَذَٰلِكَ فَعَلَ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ
Is anything then incumbent upon the messengers, except the clear transmission?
فَهَلْ عَلَى ٱلرُّسُلِ إِلَّا ٱلْبَلَٰغُ ٱلْمُبِينُ
We have indeed raised up, in every community, a messenger: "Obey God and avoid the Overreacher,"
وَلَقَدْ بَعَثْنَا فِى كُلِّ أُمَّةٍۢ رَّسُولًا أَنِ ٱعْبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱجْتَنِبُوا۟ ٱلطَّٰغُوتَ
there are among them those God has guided,
فَمِنْهُم مَّنْ هَدَى ٱللَّهُ
and there are those upon whom error has proven true.
وَمِنْهُم مَّنْ حَقَّتْ عَلَيْهِ ٱلضَّلَٰلَةُ
So travel through the earth and look at what was the end of those who denied.
فَسِيرُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَٱنظُرُوا۟ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَٰقِبَةُ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ
If you are keen on their guidance, God indeed does not guide him whom He leads astray,
إِن تَحْرِصْ عَلَىٰ هُدَىٰهُمْ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِى مَن يُضِلُّ
and they will have no help.
وَمَا لَهُم مِّن نَّٰصِرِينَ
And they swore by God, with the utmost strength of their oaths, that God will not raise up the one who dies.
وَأَقْسَمُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ جَهْدَ أَيْمَٰنِهِمْ لَا يَبْعَثُ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَمُوتُ
But yes! It is a promise incumbent upon Him, in truth — but most men do not know — so that He may make clear to them that on which they differ, and so that those who disown may know that they were liars.
بَلَىٰ وَعْدًا عَلَيْهِ حَقًّۭا وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ لِيُبَيِّنَ لَهُمُ ٱلَّذِى يَخْتَلِفُونَ فِيهِ وَلِيَعْلَمَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓا۟ أَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ كَٰذِبِينَ
Our only saying, for a thing, when We want it, is to say to it: "Be",
إِنَّمَا قَوْلُنَا لِشَىْءٍ إِذَآ أَرَدْنَٰهُ أَن نَّقُولَ لَهُۥ كُن
and it is.
فَيَكُونُ
And those who emigrated for God, after having been wronged, We shall surely settle them in a fine position in the present life;
وَٱلَّذِينَ هَاجَرُوا۟ فِى ٱللَّهِ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا ظُلِمُوا۟ لَنُبَوِّئَنَّهُمْ فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةًۭ
and the reward of the last life is even greater, if they knew —
وَلَأَجْرُ ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ أَكْبَرُ لَوْ كَانُوا۟ يَعْلَمُونَ
those who were patient and who entrust themselves to their Guardian.
ٱلَّذِينَ صَبَرُوا۟ وَعَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ يَتَوَكَّلُونَ
And We sent, before you, none but men to whom We revealed: so ask the keepers of the Reminder, if you do not know — with the clear proofs and the Formularies.
وَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَا مِن قَبْلِكَ إِلَّا رِجَالًۭا نُّوحِىٓ إِلَيْهِمْ فَسْـَٔلُوٓا۟ أَهْلَ ٱلذِّكْرِ إِن كُنتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ بِٱلْبَيِّنَٰتِ وَٱلزُّبُرِ
And We have sent down to you the Reminder, so that you may make clear to mankind what has been sent down to them, and perhaps they will reflect.
وَأَنزَلْنَآ إِلَيْكَ ٱلذِّكْرَ لِتُبَيِّنَ لِلنَّاسِ مَا نُزِّلَ إِلَيْهِمْ وَلَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ
Are those who plotted the evils then sure that God will not cause the earth to swallow them, or that the punishment will not come to them from where they do not sense it, or that He will not seize them in their comings and goings, without their being able to render Him powerless, or that He will not seize them in a gradual fear?
أَفَأَمِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ مَكَرُوا۟ ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ أَن يَخْسِفَ ٱللَّهُ بِهِمُ ٱلْأَرْضَ أَوْ يَأْتِيَهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ أَوْ يَأْخُذَهُمْ فِى تَقَلُّبِهِمْ فَمَا هُم بِمُعْجِزِينَ أَوْ يَأْخُذَهُمْ عَلَىٰ تَخَوُّفٍۢ
Your Guardian is surely full of kindness, Benevolent.
فَإِنَّ رَبَّكُمْ لَرَءُوفٌۭ رَّحِيمٌ
Have they not seen that, of everything God has created, the shadows incline to the right and the left, prostrate before God, while they are abased?
أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا۟ إِلَىٰ مَا خَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ مِن شَىْءٍۢ يَتَفَيَّؤُا۟ ظِلَٰلُهُۥ عَنِ ٱلْيَمِينِ وَٱلشَّمَآئِلِ سُجَّدًۭا لِّلَّهِ وَهُمْ دَٰخِرُونَ
And before God prostrates everything in the heavens and on the earth, among living beings, as well as the Agents, without growing proud: they fear their Guardian, above them, and do what they are commanded.
وَلِلَّهِ يَسْجُدُ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ مِن دَآبَّةٍۢ وَٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ وَهُمْ لَا يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ يَخَافُونَ رَبَّهُم مِّن فَوْقِهِمْ وَيَفْعَلُونَ مَا يُؤْمَرُونَ
And God said: "Do not take two deities.
وَقَالَ ٱللَّهُ لَا تَتَّخِذُوٓا۟ إِلَٰهَيْنِ ٱثْنَيْنِ
He is but a single deity;
إِنَّمَا هُوَ إِلَٰهٌۭ وَٰحِدٌۭ
so it is Me you must revere."
فَإِيَّٰىَ فَٱرْهَبُونِ
And to Him belongs what is in the heavens and on the earth,
وَلَهُۥ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ
and to Him the Law, permanently.
وَلَهُ ٱلدِّينُ وَاصِبًا
Is it then before other than God that you guard yourselves?
أَفَغَيْرَ ٱللَّهِ تَتَّقُونَ
Every blessing that is in you comes from God;
وَمَا بِكُم مِّن نِّعْمَةٍۢ فَمِنَ ٱللَّهِ
then, when harm touches you, it is to Him that you cry out in distress.
ثُمَّ إِذَا مَسَّكُمُ ٱلضُّرُّ فَإِلَيْهِ تَجْـَٔرُونَ
Then, when He removes harm from you, behold, a fraction among you associates others with its Guardian, so as to disown what We have given them.
ثُمَّ إِذَا كَشَفَ ٱلضُّرَّ عَنكُمْ إِذَا فَرِيقٌۭ مِّنكُم بِرَبِّهِمْ يُشْرِكُونَ لِيَكْفُرُوا۟ بِمَآ ءَاتَيْنَٰهُمْ
So enjoy yourselves,
فَتَمَتَّعُوا۟
but you will soon know.
فَسَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ
And they assign, to what they do not know, a portion of what We have provided them.
وَيَجْعَلُونَ لِمَا لَا يَعْلَمُونَ نَصِيبًۭا مِّمَّا رَزَقْنَٰهُمْ
By God, you will surely be questioned about what you used to invent.
تَٱللَّهِ لَتُسْـَٔلُنَّ عَمَّا كُنتُمْ تَفْتَرُونَ
And they assign to God daughters — Glory be to Him!
وَيَجْعَلُونَ لِلَّهِ ٱلْبَنَٰتِ سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ
while for themselves is what they desire.
وَلَهُم مَّا يَشْتَهُونَ
And when one of them receives the news of a daughter, his face stays darkened, and he is filled with suppressed distress; he screens himself from the people, because of the ill news he was given:
وَإِذَا بُشِّرَ أَحَدُهُم بِٱلْأُنثَىٰ ظَلَّ وَجْهُهُۥ مُسْوَدًّۭا وَهُوَ كَظِيمٌۭ يَتَوَٰرَىٰ مِنَ ٱلْقَوْمِ مِن سُوٓءِ مَا بُشِّرَ بِهِۦٓ
shall he retain her despite the degradation, or bury her in the ground?
أَيُمْسِكُهُۥ عَلَىٰ هُونٍ أَمْ يَدُسُّهُۥ فِى ٱلتُّرَابِ
How evil is what they decide!
أَلَا سَآءَ مَا يَحْكُمُونَ
To those who do not believe in the last life belongs the example of evil,
لِلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱلْءَاخِرَةِ مَثَلُ ٱلسَّوْءِ
and to God belongs the most exalted example:
وَلِلَّهِ ٱلْمَثَلُ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ
and He is the All-Powerful, the Wise.
وَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ
And if God were to seize mankind for their wrongdoing, He would not leave upon the earth a single living being;
وَلَوْ يُؤَاخِذُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلنَّاسَ بِظُلْمِهِم مَّا تَرَكَ عَلَيْهَا مِن دَآبَّةٍۢ
but He adjourns them until an appointed term,
وَلَٰكِن يُؤَخِّرُهُمْ إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٍۢ مُّسَمًّۭى
and when their term comes, they will not be able to delay it by an hour,
فَإِذَا جَآءَ أَجَلُهُمْ لَا يَسْتَـْٔخِرُونَ سَاعَةًۭ
nor advance it.
وَلَا يَسْتَقْدِمُونَ
And they assign to God what they themselves detest,
وَيَجْعَلُونَ لِلَّهِ مَا يَكْرَهُونَ
and their tongues describe the lie, claiming that to them belongs the best:
وَتَصِفُ أَلْسِنَتُهُمُ ٱلْكَذِبَ أَنَّ لَهُمُ ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ
there is no doubt that to them belongs the Fire, and that they will be sent forth into it first.
لَا جَرَمَ أَنَّ لَهُمُ ٱلنَّارَ وَأَنَّهُم مُّفْرَطُونَ
By God, We indeed sent messengers to communities before you; but the Diverter embellished their works for them, and he is their ally today:
تَٱللَّهِ لَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَآ إِلَىٰٓ أُمَمٍۢ مِّن قَبْلِكَ فَزَيَّنَ لَهُمُ ٱلشَّيْطَٰنُ أَعْمَٰلَهُمْ فَهُوَ وَلِيُّهُمُ ٱلْيَوْمَ
and they will have a painful punishment.
وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌۭ
And We have sent down to you the Scripture only so that you may make clear to them that on which they differed, and as guidance and benevolence for a people who believe.
وَمَآ أَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْكَ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ إِلَّا لِتُبَيِّنَ لَهُمُ ٱلَّذِى ٱخْتَلَفُوا۟ فِيهِ وَهُدًۭى وَرَحْمَةًۭ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يُؤْمِنُونَ
And God sent down from the sky a water, by which He brought the earth back to life after its death:
وَٱللَّهُ أَنزَلَ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءًۭ فَأَحْيَا بِهِ ٱلْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهَآ
there is surely in that a sign for a people who hear.
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَةًۭ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يَسْمَعُونَ
And there is surely, for you, a lesson in the cattle:
وَإِنَّ لَكُمْ فِى ٱلْأَنْعَٰمِ لَعِبْرَةًۭ
We provide you drink from what is in their bellies, between chyme and blood, a refined milk, pleasant to drink for those who drink it; and from the fruits of palms and vines, you take an intoxicating drink and a fine provision.
نُّسْقِيكُم مِّمَّا فِى بُطُونِهِۦ مِنۢ بَيْنِ فَرْثٍۢ وَدَمٍۢ لَّبَنًا خَالِصًۭا سَآئِغًۭا لِّلشَّٰرِبِينَ وَمِن ثَمَرَٰتِ ٱلنَّخِيلِ وَٱلْأَعْنَٰبِ تَتَّخِذُونَ مِنْهُ سَكَرًۭا وَرِزْقًا حَسَنًا
There is surely in that a sign for a people who reason.
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَةًۭ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يَعْقِلُونَ
And your Guardian inspired the bee: "Take, among the mountains, houses, and in the trees and in what people build; then eat of all the fruits, and follow the ways of your Guardian, made docile."
وَأَوْحَىٰ رَبُّكَ إِلَى ٱلنَّحْلِ أَنِ ٱتَّخِذِى مِنَ ٱلْجِبَالِ بُيُوتًۭا وَمِنَ ٱلشَّجَرِ وَمِمَّا يَعْرِشُونَ ثُمَّ كُلِى مِن كُلِّ ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ فَٱسْلُكِى سُبُلَ رَبِّكِ ذُلُلًۭا
From their bellies comes forth a drink of varied colors, in which there is healing for mankind:
يَخْرُجُ مِنۢ بُطُونِهَا شَرَابٌۭ مُّخْتَلِفٌ أَلْوَٰنُهُۥ فِيهِ شِفَآءٌۭ لِّلنَّاسِ
there is surely in that a sign for a people who reflect.
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَةًۭ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ
God created you, then He keeps you faithfully;
وَٱللَّهُ خَلَقَكُمْ ثُمَّ يَتَوَفَّىٰكُمْ
and among you are those brought back to the lowliest age, so as to know nothing more after having known.
وَمِنكُم مَّن يُرَدُّ إِلَىٰٓ أَرْذَلِ ٱلْعُمُرِ لِكَىْ لَا يَعْلَمَ بَعْدَ عِلْمٍۢ شَيْـًٔا
God is All-Knowing, Capable.
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِيمٌۭ قَدِيرٌۭ
And God has favored some among you over others in provision:
وَٱللَّهُ فَضَّلَ بَعْضَكُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍۢ فِى ٱلرِّزْقِ
those who have been favored do not give back their provision to those bound by oath among them, so that they would be equal in it.
فَمَا ٱلَّذِينَ فُضِّلُوا۟ بِرَآدِّى رِزْقِهِمْ عَلَىٰ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَٰنُهُمْ فَهُمْ فِيهِ سَوَآءٌ
Would they then stubbornly reject the blessing of God?
أَفَبِنِعْمَةِ ٱللَّهِ يَجْحَدُونَ
And God has made for you, from yourselves, spouses, and He has made for you, from your spouses, sons and grandchildren,
وَٱللَّهُ جَعَلَ لَكُم مِّنْ أَنفُسِكُمْ أَزْوَٰجًۭا وَجَعَلَ لَكُم مِّنْ أَزْوَٰجِكُم بَنِينَ وَحَفَدَةًۭ
and He has provided you with wholesome things.
وَرَزَقَكُم مِّنَ ٱلطَّيِّبَٰتِ
Do they then believe in falsehood, and disown the blessing of God?
أَفَبِٱلْبَٰطِلِ يُؤْمِنُونَ وَبِنِعْمَتِ ٱللَّهِ هُمْ يَكْفُرُونَ
And they obey, besides God, what holds for them, from the heavens and the earth, no provision at all, and has no power to do so.
وَيَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا يَمْلِكُ لَهُمْ رِزْقًۭا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ شَيْـًۭٔا وَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ
So do not multiply examples for God:
فَلَا تَضْرِبُوا۟ لِلَّهِ ٱلْأَمْثَالَ
God indeed knows,
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَعْلَمُ
and you do not know.
وَأَنتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
God multiplies an example: a constrained one, having no power at all, and one whom We have provided, from Us, with a fine provision, from which he spends secretly and openly — would they be equal?
ضَرَبَ ٱللَّهُ مَثَلًا عَبْدًۭا مَّمْلُوكًۭا لَّا يَقْدِرُ عَلَىٰ شَىْءٍۢ وَمَن رَّزَقْنَٰهُ مِنَّا رِزْقًا حَسَنًۭا فَهُوَ يُنفِقُ مِنْهُ سِرًّۭا وَجَهْرًا هَلْ يَسْتَوُۥنَ
Praise be to God!
ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ
But most of them do not know.
بَلْ أَكْثَرُهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
And God multiplies an example: two men, one of whom is mute, possessing no power at all, an entire burden upon his nearest guarantor; wherever he sends him, he brings back no good — is that one the equal of one who commands justice and stands upon a straight path?
وَضَرَبَ ٱللَّهُ مَثَلًۭا رَّجُلَيْنِ أَحَدُهُمَآ أَبْكَمُ لَا يَقْدِرُ عَلَىٰ شَىْءٍۢ وَهُوَ كَلٌّ عَلَىٰ مَوْلَىٰهُ أَيْنَمَا يُوَجِّههُّ لَا يَأْتِ بِخَيْرٍ هَلْ يَسْتَوِى هُوَ وَمَن يَأْمُرُ بِٱلْعَدْلِ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ صِرَٰطٍۢ مُّسْتَقِيمٍۢ
And to God belongs what escapes the senses in the heavens and on the earth.
وَلِلَّهِ غَيْبُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ
The matter of the Hour is only like the blink of an eye, or even swifter.
وَمَآ أَمْرُ ٱلسَّاعَةِ إِلَّا كَلَمْحِ ٱلْبَصَرِ أَوْ هُوَ أَقْرَبُ
God is indeed capable of all things.
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍۢ قَدِيرٌۭ
And God brought you out of your mothers' bellies, knowing nothing,
وَٱللَّهُ أَخْرَجَكُم مِّنۢ بُطُونِ أُمَّهَٰتِكُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ شَيْـًۭٔا
and He appointed for you hearing, sight, and Consciences, perhaps you will be grateful.
وَجَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلسَّمْعَ وَٱلْأَبْصَٰرَ وَٱلْأَفْـِٔدَةَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ
Have you not seen the birds, subjected in the space of the sky, held by nothing but God?
أَلَمْ يَرَوْا۟ إِلَى ٱلطَّيْرِ مُسَخَّرَٰتٍۢ فِى جَوِّ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَا يُمْسِكُهُنَّ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ
There are surely in that signs for a people who believe.
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَٰتٍۢ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يُؤْمِنُونَ
And God has made for you, from your houses, a peaceful dwelling, and He has made for you, from the hides of cattle, houses you find light on the day of your departure and the day of your encampment,
وَٱللَّهُ جَعَلَ لَكُم مِّنۢ بُيُوتِكُمْ سَكَنًۭا وَجَعَلَ لَكُم مِّن جُلُودِ ٱلْأَنْعَٰمِ بُيُوتًۭا تَسْتَخِفُّونَهَا يَوْمَ ظَعْنِكُمْ وَيَوْمَ إِقَامَتِكُمْ
and, from their wool, their fur, and their hair, furnishings and use for a time.
وَمِنْ أَصْوَافِهَا وَأَوْبَارِهَا وَأَشْعَارِهَآ أَثَٰثًۭا وَمَتَٰعًا إِلَىٰ حِينٍۢ
And God has made for you, from what He created, shades, and He has made for you, from the mountains, shelters, and He has made for you tunics that protect you from the heat, and tunics that protect you from your own violence:
وَٱللَّهُ جَعَلَ لَكُم مِّمَّا خَلَقَ ظِلَٰلًۭا وَجَعَلَ لَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْجِبَالِ أَكْنَٰنًۭا وَجَعَلَ لَكُمْ سَرَٰبِيلَ تَقِيكُمُ ٱلْحَرَّ وَسَرَٰبِيلَ تَقِيكُم بَأْسَكُمْ
thus He completes His blessing upon you, perhaps you will be true to Him alone.
كَذَٰلِكَ يُتِمُّ نِعْمَتَهُۥ عَلَيْكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُسْلِمُونَ
If they turn their backs, only the clear transmission is incumbent upon you.
فَإِن تَوَلَّوْا۟ فَإِنَّمَا عَلَيْكَ ٱلْبَلَٰغُ ٱلْمُبِينُ
They recognize the blessing of God, then disavow it,
يَعْرِفُونَ نِعْمَتَ ٱللَّهِ ثُمَّ يُنكِرُونَهَا
and most of them disown.
وَأَكْثَرُهُمُ ٱلْكَٰفِرُونَ
And the Day We raise up, from every community, a witness, no permission will any longer be given to those who disown, nor will they be asked to make amends.
وَيَوْمَ نَبْعَثُ مِن كُلِّ أُمَّةٍۢ شَهِيدًۭا ثُمَّ لَا يُؤْذَنُ لِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَلَا هُمْ يُسْتَعْتَبُونَ
And when those who did wrong see the punishment, it will not be lightened for them, and they will not be granted a delay.
وَإِذَا رَءَا ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ ٱلْعَذَابَ فَلَا يُخَفَّفُ عَنْهُمْ وَلَا هُمْ يُنظَرُونَ
And when those who associated see their associates, they will say: "Our Guardian, these are our associates whom we used to invoke besides You."
وَإِذَا رَءَا ٱلَّذِينَ أَشْرَكُوا۟ شُرَكَآءَهُمْ قَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَا هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ شُرَكَآؤُنَا ٱلَّذِينَ كُنَّا نَدْعُوا۟ مِن دُونِكَ
These will then address this saying to them: "You are surely liars."
فَأَلْقَوْا۟ إِلَيْهِمُ ٱلْقَوْلَ إِنَّكُمْ لَكَٰذِبُونَ
And they will offer to God, that Day, their submission,
وَأَلْقَوْا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ يَوْمَئِذٍ ٱلسَّلَمَ
and what they used to invent will stray away from them.
وَضَلَّ عَنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَفْتَرُونَ
Those who disown and who barred from God's way — We shall add for them a punishment upon the punishment, for the corruption they sowed.
ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَصَدُّوا۟ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ زِدْنَٰهُمْ عَذَابًۭا فَوْقَ ٱلْعَذَابِ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يُفْسِدُونَ
And the Day We raise up, in every community, a witness from among themselves, against it, and We bring you, as a witness against these.
وَيَوْمَ نَبْعَثُ فِى كُلِّ أُمَّةٍۢ شَهِيدًا عَلَيْهِم مِّنْ أَنفُسِهِمْ وَجِئْنَا بِكَ شَهِيدًا عَلَىٰ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ
And We have sent down to you the Scripture, making everything clear, and as guidance, benevolence, and good tidings for those who are true to God alone.
وَنَزَّلْنَا عَلَيْكَ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ تِبْيَٰنًۭا لِّكُلِّ شَىْءٍۢ وَهُدًۭى وَرَحْمَةًۭ وَبُشْرَىٰ لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ
God commands justice, beneficence, and giving to the close relative,
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَأْمُرُ بِٱلْعَدْلِ وَٱلْإِحْسَٰنِ وَإِيتَآئِ ذِى ٱلْقُرْبَىٰ
and He forbids indecency, what is disavowed, and iniquity:
وَيَنْهَىٰ عَنِ ٱلْفَحْشَآءِ وَٱلْمُنكَرِ وَٱلْبَغْىِ
He exhorts you, perhaps you will remember.
يَعِظُكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ
And be faithful to God's pact when you make a pact,
وَأَوْفُوا۟ بِعَهْدِ ٱللَّهِ إِذَا عَٰهَدتُّمْ
and do not break oaths after affirming them, having taken God as a guarantor over you:
وَلَا تَنقُضُوا۟ ٱلْأَيْمَٰنَ بَعْدَ تَوْكِيدِهَا وَقَدْ جَعَلْتُمُ ٱللَّهَ عَلَيْكُمْ كَفِيلًا
God indeed knows what you do.
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَعْلَمُ مَا تَفْعَلُونَ
And do not be like her who unravels her thread, after having firmly spun it, reducing it to fibers; you take your oaths as a means of deceit among yourselves, on the pretext that one community is more numerous than another:
وَلَا تَكُونُوا۟ كَٱلَّتِى نَقَضَتْ غَزْلَهَا مِنۢ بَعْدِ قُوَّةٍ أَنكَٰثًۭا تَتَّخِذُونَ أَيْمَٰنَكُمْ دَخَلًۢا بَيْنَكُمْ أَن تَكُونَ أُمَّةٌ هِىَ أَرْبَىٰ مِنْ أُمَّةٍ
God only thereby tests you,
إِنَّمَا يَبْلُوكُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِهِۦ
and He will surely make clear to you, on the Day of Appearance, that on which you differed.
وَلَيُبَيِّنَنَّ لَكُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ مَا كُنتُمْ فِيهِ تَخْتَلِفُونَ
And had God willed, He would have made you a single community;
وَلَوْ شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ لَجَعَلَكُمْ أُمَّةًۭ وَٰحِدَةًۭ
but He leads astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills,
وَلَٰكِن يُضِلُّ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَهْدِى مَن يَشَآءُ
and you will surely be questioned about what you did.
وَلَتُسْـَٔلُنَّ عَمَّا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ
And do not take your oaths as a means of deceit among yourselves, or a foot would slip after having been firm, and you would taste evil for having barred from God's way; and you would have an immense punishment.
وَلَا تَتَّخِذُوٓا۟ أَيْمَٰنَكُمْ دَخَلًۢا بَيْنَكُمْ فَتَزِلَّ قَدَمٌۢ بَعْدَ ثُبُوتِهَا وَتَذُوقُوا۟ ٱلسُّوٓءَ بِمَا صَدَدتُّمْ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَكُمْ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌۭ
And do not buy, with God's pact, a paltry price:
وَلَا تَشْتَرُوا۟ بِعَهْدِ ٱللَّهِ ثَمَنًۭا قَلِيلًا
what is with God is better for you, if you knew.
إِنَّمَا عِندَ ٱللَّهِ هُوَ خَيْرٌۭ لَّكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ
What is with you is exhausted,
مَا عِندَكُمْ يَنفَدُ
and what is with God endures.
وَمَا عِندَ ٱللَّهِ بَاقٍۢ
And We shall surely recompense those who were patient with their reward, according to the best of their deeds.
وَلَنَجْزِيَنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ صَبَرُوٓا۟ أَجْرَهُم بِأَحْسَنِ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ
Whoever does a sound deed, male or female, while being a believer, We shall surely make him live a wholesome life, and We shall surely recompense them with their reward, according to the best of their deeds.
مَنْ عَمِلَ صَٰلِحًۭا مِّن ذَكَرٍ أَوْ أُنثَىٰ وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌۭ فَلَنُحْيِيَنَّهُۥ حَيَوٰةًۭ طَيِّبَةًۭ وَلَنَجْزِيَنَّهُمْ أَجْرَهُم بِأَحْسَنِ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ
When you read the Recitation, seek refuge with God from the banished Diverter.
فَإِذَا قَرَأْتَ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ فَٱسْتَعِذْ بِٱللَّهِ مِنَ ٱلشَّيْطَٰنِ ٱلرَّجِيمِ
He indeed has no authority over those who believe and who entrust themselves to their Guardian.
إِنَّهُۥ لَيْسَ لَهُۥ سُلْطَٰنٌ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ يَتَوَكَّلُونَ
His authority is exercised only over those who take him as ally, and over those who make him an associate.
إِنَّمَا سُلْطَٰنُهُۥ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ يَتَوَلَّوْنَهُۥ وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِهِۦ مُشْرِكُونَ
And when We substitute one sign for another sign — God knows best what He sends down — they say: "You are but an inventor."
وَإِذَا بَدَّلْنَآ ءَايَةًۭ مَّكَانَ ءَايَةٍۢ وَٱللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يُنَزِّلُ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مُفْتَرٍۭ
But most of them do not know.
بَلْ أَكْثَرُهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
Say: "The sacred Influx has brought it down, from your Guardian, with truth, so as to make firm those who believe, and as guidance and good tidings for those who are true to God alone."
قُلْ نَزَّلَهُۥ رُوحُ ٱلْقُدُسِ مِن رَّبِّكَ بِٱلْحَقِّ لِيُثَبِّتَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَهُدًۭى وَبُشْرَىٰ لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ
We will indeed know that they say: "It is only a human who teaches it to him."
وَلَقَدْ نَعْلَمُ أَنَّهُمْ يَقُولُونَ إِنَّمَا يُعَلِّمُهُۥ بَشَرٌۭ
Yet the tongue of the one to whom they allude is confused, whereas this tongue is flawless, explicit.
لِّسَانُ ٱلَّذِى يُلْحِدُونَ إِلَيْهِ أَعْجَمِىٌّۭ وَهَٰذَا لِسَانٌ عَرَبِىٌّۭ مُّبِينٌ
Those who do not believe in God's signs, God indeed does not guide them,
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِـَٔايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ لَا يَهْدِيهِمُ ٱللَّهُ
and they will have a painful punishment.
وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ
Those who invent the lie are those who do not believe in God's signs,
إِنَّمَا يَفْتَرِى ٱلْكَذِبَ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِـَٔايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ
and they are the liars.
وَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْكَٰذِبُونَ
Whoever disowns God after having believed — except one who is coerced, while his core remains calm in faith —
مَن كَفَرَ بِٱللَّهِ مِنۢ بَعْدِ إِيمَٰنِهِۦٓ إِلَّا مَنْ أُكْرِهَ وَقَلْبُهُۥ مُطْمَئِنٌّۢ بِٱلْإِيمَٰنِ
but whoever opens his chest to disowning, upon them falls an anger from God,
وَلَٰكِن مَّن شَرَحَ بِٱلْكُفْرِ صَدْرًۭا فَعَلَيْهِمْ غَضَبٌۭ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ
and they will have an immense punishment.
وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌۭ
That, because they loved the present life more than the last life, and because God does not guide the people who disown.
ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمُ ٱسْتَحَبُّوا۟ ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا عَلَى ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ
Those are the ones whose core, hearing, and sight God has stamped,
أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ طَبَعَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ وَسَمْعِهِمْ وَأَبْصَٰرِهِمْ
and those are the heedless.
وَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْغَٰفِلُونَ
There is no doubt that, in the last life, they are the losers.
لَا جَرَمَ أَنَّهُمْ فِى ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ هُمُ ٱلْخَٰسِرُونَ
Then, your Guardian, toward those who emigrated after having been tried, then strove and were patient — your Guardian, after that, is surely Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.
ثُمَّ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لِلَّذِينَ هَاجَرُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا فُتِنُوا۟ ثُمَّ جَٰهَدُوا۟ وَصَبَرُوٓا۟ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ مِنۢ بَعْدِهَا لَغَفُورٌۭ رَّحِيمٌۭ
The Day every Self will come arguing in its own favor, and every Self will be faithfully repaid for what it did, without being wronged.
يَوْمَ تَأْتِى كُلُّ نَفْسٍۢ تُجَٰدِلُ عَن نَّفْسِهَا وَتُوَفَّىٰ كُلُّ نَفْسٍۢ مَّا عَمِلَتْ وَهُمْ لَا يُظْلَمُونَ
And God multiplies an example: a city that was secure, calm, to which its provision came with ease from everywhere; then it disowned God's blessings, and God made it taste the garment of hunger and fear, for what they were doing.
وَضَرَبَ ٱللَّهُ مَثَلًۭا قَرْيَةًۭ كَانَتْ ءَامِنَةًۭ مُّطْمَئِنَّةًۭ يَأْتِيهَا رِزْقُهَا رَغَدًۭا مِّن كُلِّ مَكَانٍۢ فَكَفَرَتْ بِأَنْعُمِ ٱللَّهِ فَأَذَٰقَهَا ٱللَّهُ لِبَاسَ ٱلْجُوعِ وَٱلْخَوْفِ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَصْنَعُونَ
A messenger, from among them, had indeed come to them, but they denied him; and the punishment seized them, while they were wrongdoers.
وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُمْ رَسُولٌۭ مِّنْهُمْ فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابُ وَهُمْ ظَٰلِمُونَ
So eat of what God has provided you, of what is permitted and wholesome,
فَكُلُوا۟ مِمَّا رَزَقَكُمُ ٱللَّهُ حَلَٰلًۭا طَيِّبًۭا
and be grateful for God's blessing, if it is Him that you obey.
وَٱشْكُرُوا۟ نِعْمَتَ ٱللَّهِ إِن كُنتُمْ إِيَّاهُ تَعْبُدُونَ
He has prohibited to you only the dead animal, blood, the flesh of swine, and what has been consecrated to other than God.
إِنَّمَا حَرَّمَ عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلْمَيْتَةَ وَٱلدَّمَ وَلَحْمَ ٱلْخِنزِيرِ وَمَآ أُهِلَّ لِغَيْرِ ٱللَّهِ بِهِۦ
But whoever is compelled to it, without being rebellious or crossing the limits, God is then indeed Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.
فَمَنِ ٱضْطُرَّ غَيْرَ بَاغٍۢ وَلَا عَادٍۢ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌۭ رَّحِيمٌۭ
And do not say, for what your tongues falsely describe: "This is permitted and this is prohibited," so as to invent the lie against God:
وَلَا تَقُولُوا۟ لِمَا تَصِفُ أَلْسِنَتُكُمُ ٱلْكَذِبَ هَٰذَا حَلَٰلٌۭ وَهَٰذَا حَرَامٌۭ لِّتَفْتَرُوا۟ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ٱلْكَذِبَ
those who invent the lie against God will indeed not succeed.
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَفْتَرُونَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ٱلْكَذِبَ لَا يُفْلِحُونَ
It is an enjoyment of little worth,
مَتَٰعٌۭ قَلِيلٌۭ
and they will have a painful punishment.
وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌۭ
And to the Reoriented, We prohibited what We have already related to you;
وَعَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ هَادُوا۟ حَرَّمْنَا مَا قَصَصْنَا عَلَيْكَ مِن قَبْلُ
We did not wrong them,
وَمَا ظَلَمْنَٰهُمْ
but it was themselves that they wronged.
وَلَٰكِن كَانُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَ
Then, your Guardian, toward those who did evil out of ignorance, then repented after that and became sound — your Guardian, after that, is surely Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.
ثُمَّ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لِلَّذِينَ عَمِلُوا۟ ٱلسُّوٓءَ بِجَهَٰلَةٍۢ ثُمَّ تَابُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ وَأَصْلَحُوٓا۟ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ مِنۢ بَعْدِهَا لَغَفُورٌۭ رَّحِيمٌ
Ibrahim was a community, devoted to God, wholly turned toward Him, and he was not among those who associate,
إِنَّ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ كَانَ أُمَّةًۭ قَانِتًۭا لِّلَّهِ حَنِيفًۭا وَلَمْ يَكُ مِنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ
grateful for His blessings.
شَاكِرًۭا لِّأَنْعُمِهِ
He elected him and guided him to a straight path.
ٱجْتَبَىٰهُ وَهَدَىٰهُ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطٍۢ مُّسْتَقِيمٍۢ
And We gave him, in the present life, good;
وَءَاتَيْنَٰهُ فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةًۭ
and in the last life, he will surely be among those who are sound.
وَإِنَّهُۥ فِى ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ لَمِنَ ٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ
Then We revealed to you: "Follow the doctrine of Ibrahim, wholly turned toward God,"
ثُمَّ أَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَيْكَ أَنِ ٱتَّبِعْ مِلَّةَ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ حَنِيفًۭا
and he was not among those who associate.
وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ
The Rest was laid only upon those who differed about it:
إِنَّمَا جُعِلَ ٱلسَّبْتُ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ ٱخْتَلَفُوا۟ فِيهِ
your Guardian will surely judge between them, on the Day of Appearance, concerning that in which they differed.
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَيَحْكُمُ بَيْنَهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ فِيمَا كَانُوا۟ فِيهِ يَخْتَلِفُونَ
Call to the way of your Guardian with wisdom and fine admonition, and argue with them in the best way.
ٱدْعُ إِلَىٰ سَبِيلِ رَبِّكَ بِٱلْحِكْمَةِ وَٱلْمَوْعِظَةِ ٱلْحَسَنَةِ وَجَٰدِلْهُم بِٱلَّتِى هِىَ أَحْسَنُ
Your Guardian knows best who has strayed from His way,
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ
and He knows best those who let themselves be guided.
وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِٱلْمُهْتَدِينَ
And if you pay back in kind, pay back to the exact measure of what was done to you;
وَإِنْ عَاقَبْتُمْ فَعَاقِبُوا۟ بِمِثْلِ مَا عُوقِبْتُم بِهِۦ
but if you are patient, that is indeed better for those who are patient.
وَلَئِن صَبَرْتُمْ لَهُوَ خَيْرٌۭ لِّلصَّٰبِرِينَ
And be patient —
وَٱصْبِرْ
yet your patience rests only in God.
وَمَا صَبْرُكَ إِلَّا بِٱللَّهِ
And do not grieve over them, and do not be constrained because of what they plot.
وَلَا تَحْزَنْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا تَكُ فِى ضَيْقٍۢ مِّمَّا يَمْكُرُونَ
God is indeed with those who guard themselves and those who do good.
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّقَوا۟ وَّٱلَّذِينَ هُم مُّحْسِنُونَ
