3 The human being and his deeds 2 / 7

Evil lies in the deed, not in the being

Observation 3 examples 1 min

The text does not declare a being or a thing evil in itself: it places evil in a deed. One therefore looks for the condition that triggers the evil (often "when", إذا) or the form of the word that makes it a habit.

Sura 113 gives three examples. One does not seek refuge from darkness, but from "the evil of a darkness when it penetrates" (113:3). One does not seek refuge from the envier, but from "the evil of an envier when he envies" (113:5). The condition "when" isolates the moment the evil occurs.

Between the two, "those who blow insistently into the knots" (113:4) are named with an intensive form: the repeated act is in the noun itself. Here too, these are beings defined by what they do.

Sura 60 applies the same principle to human relations. What is forbidden is alliance with those who committed specific acts: fighting, expelling, supporting the expulsion (60:9). Toward others, kindness remains permitted: "God does not forbid you from being beneficent and equitable toward those who did not fight you concerning the Law" (60:8).
