The Contact: making it, maintaining it, being in contact with
The root صلو is always rendered with "contact", but the construction decides the verb: the verb صلّى used alone is rendered "make contact"; the phrase أقام الصلاة is rendered "maintain the Contact"; the verb followed by على and a person is rendered "be in contact with".
Three constructions, three renderings, without exception.
The verb used alone states the act: the one who "remembers the name of his Guardian, and makes contact" (87:15); Zakariya, called "while he was making contact in the oratory" (3:39). The participle follows the verb: "those who make contact" (70:22, 107:4).
The phrase أقام الصلاة states duration: "And maintain the Contact" (2:43), with the capital of the noun.
With على and a person, the verb states the relation: "and be in contact with them" (9:103). The same construction, negated, forbids the relation: "And never be in contact with any of them who dies" (9:84). God Himself is "in contact" with the believers (33:43) and with the Prophet (33:56).
