The One Who Keeps Turning Back
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent.
Ṣad.
ص
By the Recitation charged with the Reminder,
والقران ذي الذكر
No! Those who disown are steeped in might and rupture.
بل الذين كفروا في عزه وشقاق
How many generations did We annihilate before them! They cried out, but it was no longer the time for a way out.
كم اهلكنا من قبلهم من قرن فنادوا ولات حين مناص
And they marveled that a warner should come to them from among themselves,
وعجبوا ان جاهم منذر منهم
and those who disown said: "This is a worker of illusion, a great liar. Has he made the deities a single deity? This is surely an astonishing thing!"
وقال الكفرون هذا سحر كذاب اجعل الالهه الها وحدا ان هذا لشي عجاب
And the court, among them, set out, saying: "Go, and remain firm toward your deities! This is surely something intended. We have not heard of this in the last doctrine; this is nothing but a creation out of whole cloth. Was the Reminder sent down upon him, out of all of us?"
وانطلق الملا منهم ان امشوا واصبروا علي الهتكم ان هذا لشي يراد ما سمعنا بهذا في المله الاخره ان هذا الا اختلق انزل عليه الذكر من بيننا
No, they are in doubt about My Reminder; no, they have not yet tasted My punishment.
بل هم في شك من ذكري بل لما يذوقوا عذاب
Or do they hold the treasuries of the benevolence of your Guardian, the All-Powerful, the Bestower?
ام عندهم خزاين رحمه ربك العزيز الوهاب
Or do they own the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them?
ام لهم ملك السموت والارض وما بينهما
Then let them ascend by the means!
فليرتقوا في الاسبب
It is but an army among the parties, doomed to defeat.
جند ما هنالك مهزوم من الاحزاب
Before them, the people of Nuh denied, and the Aad, and Fir'awn of the stakes, the Thamud, the people of Lut, and the companions of the Thicket.
كذبت قبلهم قوم نوح وعاد وفرعون ذو الاوتاد وثمود وقوم لوط واصحب ليكه
Those are the parties.
اوليك الاحزاب
Each of them did nothing but deny the messengers, and so My sanction proved true.
ان كل الا كذب الرسل فحق عقاب
And these await nothing but a single cry, with no respite.
وما ينظر هولا الا صيحه وحده ما لها من فواق
And they said: "Our Guardian, hasten for us our share, before the Day of Reckoning."
وقالوا ربنا عجل لنا قطنا قبل يوم الحساب
Be patient with what they say,
اصبر علي ما يقولون
and remember Our obedient one Dawud, endowed with strength,
واذكر عبدنا داود ذا الايد
he was ever-returning.
انه اواب
We subjected the mountains to glorify with him, in the evening and at daybreak, and the birds gathered together:
انا سخرنا الجبال معه يسبحن بالعشي والاشراق والطير محشوره
each of them was ever-returning to Him.
كل له اواب
We strengthened his dominion and gave him wisdom and the address that separates.
وشددنا ملكه واتينه الحكمه وفصل الخطاب
Has the information concerning the opposing parties reached you, when they scaled the oratory, when they entered upon Dawud, and he took fright at them? They said: "Do not fear;
وهل اتيك نبوا الخصم اذ تسوروا المحراب اذ دخلوا علي داود ففزع منهم قالوا لا تخف
we are two opposing parties, one of us has committed iniquity against the other; so judge between us with truth, without excess,
خصمان بغي بعضنا علي بعض فاحكم بيننا بالحق ولا تشطط
and guide us to the middle of the path."
واهدنا الي سوا الصرط
"This is my brother; he has ninety-nine ewes, and I have but one ewe. He said: 'Entrust her to me,' and he overpowered me in address."
ان هذا اخي له تسع وتسعون نعجه ولي نعجه وحده فقال اكفلنيها وعزني في الخطاب
He said: "He has certainly wronged you in demanding your ewe to add to his own;
قال لقد ظلمك بسوال نعجتك الي نعاجه
and surely, many of those who mix their affairs commit iniquity against one another, except those who have believed and done sound deeds —
وان كثيرا من الخلطا ليبغي بعضهم علي بعض الا الذين امنوا وعملوا الصلحت
and how few they are."
وقليل ما هم
And Dawud presumed that We had tried him; he sought his Guardian's forgiveness, fell down kneeling, and had recourse to Him.
وظن داود انما فتنه فاستغفر ربه وخر راكعا واناب
So We forgave him that;
فغفرنا له ذلك
he surely has, with Us, closeness and a fine place of return.
وان له عندنا لزلفي وحسن ماب
"O Dawud, We have made you a successor on earth; so judge among mankind with truth, and do not follow emotion, lest it lead you astray from the way of God.
يداود انا جعلنك خليفه في الارض فاحكم بين الناس بالحق ولا تتبع الهوي فيضلك عن سبيل الله
Indeed, those who stray from the way of God will have a severe punishment, for having forgotten the Day of Reckoning."
ان الذين يضلون عن سبيل الله لهم عذاب شديد بما نسوا يوم الحساب
We did not create the heaven and the earth and all that is between them in vain.
وما خلقنا السما والارض وما بينهما بطلا
Such is the presumption of those who disown;
ذلك ظن الذين كفروا
so woe to those who disown, because of the Fire!
فويل للذين كفروا من النار
Or should We treat those who have believed and done sound deeds like the corrupters on earth?
ام نجعل الذين امنوا وعملوا الصلحت كالمفسدين في الارض
Or should We treat those who guard themselves like the depraved?
ام نجعل المتقين كالفجار
Here is a blessed Scripture that We sent down to you, so that they may ponder its signs, and so that the possessors of intelligence may remember.
كتب انزلنه اليك مبرك ليدبروا ايته وليتذكر اولوا الالبب
And We bestowed Sulayman on Dawud —
ووهبنا لداود سليمن
what an excellent obedient one!
نعم العبد
He was ever-returning.
انه اواب
When there were displayed to him, in the evening, the standing, well-bred horses, he said: "I have indeed loved the love of the good more than the remembrance of my Guardian," until they were concealed behind the veil.
اذ عرض عليه بالعشي الصفنت الجياد فقال اني احببت حب الخير عن ذكر ربي حتي توارت بالحجاب
"Bring them back to me!" And he set about stroking their legs and necks.
ردوها علي فطفق مسحا بالسوق والاعناق
And We certainly tried Sulayman: We cast upon his throne-seat a body; then he had recourse to Us.
ولقد فتنا سليمن والقينا علي كرسيه جسدا ثم اناب
He said: "My Guardian, forgive me, and bestow on me a dominion that will not befit anyone after me;
قال رب اغفر لي وهب لي ملكا لا ينبغي لاحد من بعدي
You, indeed, are the Bestower."
انك انت الوهاب
So We subjected the wind to him, running at his command, gently, wherever he aimed; and the Diverters, every builder and diver, and others bound together in fetters.
فسخرنا له الريح تجري بامره رخا حيث اصاب والشيطين كل بنا وغواص واخرين مقرنين في الاصفاد
"This is Our endowment: grace others with it or retain it, without account to render."
هذا عطاونا فامنن او امسك بغير حساب
He surely has, with Us, closeness and a fine place of return.
وان له عندنا لزلفي وحسن ماب
And remember Our obedient one Ayyub, when he called upon his Guardian: "The Diverter has touched me with fatigue and suffering."
واذكر عبدنا ايوب اذ نادي ربه اني مسني الشيطن بنصب وعذاب
"Run with your foot:
اركض برجلك
here is cool water for washing and for drinking."
هذا مغتسل بارد وشراب
And We bestowed on him his family, and as many again with them, as a benevolence from Us, and as a reminder for the possessors of intelligence.
ووهبنا له اهله ومثلهم معهم رحمه منا وذكري لاولي الالبب
"Take in your hand a bundle, and strike with it, and do not break your oath."
وخذ بيدك ضغثا فاضرب به ولا تحنث
We found him patient,
انا وجدنه صابرا
what an excellent obedient one!
نعم العبد
He was ever-returning.
انه اواب
And remember Our obedient ones Ibrahim, Ishaq, and Yaacoub, endowed with strength and insight.
واذكر عبدنا ابرهيم واسحق ويعقوب اولي الايدي والابصر
We refined them with something refined: the remembrance of the Abode.
انا اخلصنهم بخالصه ذكري الدار
And they are surely, with Us, among the chosen, the best.
وانهم عندنا لمن المصطفين الاخيار
And remember Isma'il, Al-Yasa', and Dhul-Kifl,
واذكر اسمعيل واليسع وذا الكفل
each among the best.
وكل من الاخيار
This is a reminder.
هذا ذكر
And those who guard themselves shall surely have a fine place of return:
وان للمتقين لحسن ماب
Gardens of permanence, whose gates will be opened for them, reclining therein, calling for abundant savoury fruit and drink.
جنت عدن مفتحه لهم الابوب متكين فيها يدعون فيها بفكهه كثيره وشراب
And beside them will be companions of reserved gaze, fertile and of shared stock.
وعندهم قصرت الطرف اتراب
This is what you are promised for the Day of Reckoning.
هذا ما توعدون ليوم الحساب
This is surely Our provision, which knows no end.
ان هذا لرزقنا ما له من نفاد
So it is. And those who exceed all measure shall surely have the worst place of return: Jahannam, wherein they will burn,
هذا وان للطغين لشر ماب جهنم يصلونها
what an evil bed!
فبيس المهاد
This — let them taste it: boiling water, and a foul, dark fluid, and other of the same kind, in pairs.
هذا فليذوقوه حميم وغساق واخر من شكله ازوج
"Here is a crowd rushing in with you."
هذا فوج مقتحم معكم
"No welcome for them!
لا مرحبا بهم
They will indeed burn in the Fire."
انهم صالوا النار
They will say: "Rather it is you! No welcome for you! It is you who prepared it for us."
قالوا بل انتم لا مرحبا بكم انتم قدمتموه لنا
What a wretched haven!
فبيس القرار
They will say: "Our Guardian, whoever prepared this for us, give him double punishment in the Fire."
قالوا ربنا من قدم لنا هذا فزده عذابا ضعفا في النار
And they will say: "Why do we not see men we used to number among the wicked?
وقالوا ما لنا لا نري رجالا كنا نعدهم من الاشرار
Did we take them as objects of scoffing, or have our sights deviated from them?"
اتخذنهم سخريا ام زاغت عنهم الابصر
This is surely true: such is the quarrel of the people of the Fire.
ان ذلك لحق تخاصم اهل النار
Say: "I am only a warner,
قل انما انا منذر
and there is no deity but God, the One, the Subjugator,
وما من اله الا الله الوحد القهار
Guardian of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them,
رب السموت والارض وما بينهما
the All-Powerful, the Great Forgiver."
العزيز الغفر
Say: "This is immense Information, from which you turn away:
قل هو نبوا عظيم انتم عنه معرضون
I had no knowledge of the sublime court when it quarreled;
ما كان لي من علم بالملا الاعلي اذ يختصمون
nothing is revealed to me except that I am a clear warner."
ان يوحي الي الا انما انا نذير مبين
When your Guardian said to the Agents: "I am about to create a human of clay; when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My Influx, bow before him, prostrating."
اذ قال ربك للمليكه اني خلق بشرا من طين فاذا سويته ونفخت فيه من روحي فقعوا له سجدين
The Agents then prostrated, all together, except Iblis: he grew proud and was among those who disown.
فسجد المليكه كلهم اجمعون الا ابليس استكبر وكان من الكفرين
He said: "O Iblis, what prevented you from prostrating before what I created with My own two hands? Did you grow proud, or were you among the exalted?"
قال يابليس ما منعك ان تسجد لما خلقت بيدي استكبرت ام كنت من العالين
He said: "I am better than him: You created me from fire, and You created him from clay."
قال انا خير منه خلقتني من نار وخلقته من طين
He said: "Then get out of here, for you are banished, and My curse is indeed upon you until the Day of the Due."
قال فاخرج منها فانك رجيم وان عليك لعنتي الي يوم الدين
He said: "My Guardian, grant me then a delay until the day they are raised."
قال رب فانظرني الي يوم يبعثون
He said: "You are among those granted a delay, until the day of the known moment."
قال فانك من المنظرين الي يوم الوقت المعلوم
He said: "By Your might, I will make them all err, except Your refined obedient ones among them."
قال فبعزتك لاغوينهم اجمعين الا عبادك منهم المخلصين
He said: "Here then is the truth — and I speak the truth:
قال فالحق والحق اقول
I will surely fill Jahannam with you and with all of those among them who follow you."
لاملان جهنم منك وممن تبعك منهم اجمعين
Say: "I ask you no reward for this, and I am not one of those who pretend to be what they are not.
قل ما اسلكم عليه من اجر وما انا من المتكلفين
It is only a reminder for all beings,
ان هو الا ذكر للعلمين
and you will surely know its information after a time."
ولتعلمن نباه بعد حين
