Al-Hujurat

The Believers Are But Brothers

49:1

In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. O you who have believed! Do not put yourselves before God and His messenger.

49:1

And guard yourselves toward God.

God is indeed the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

49:2

O you who have believed! Do not elevate your voices above the voice of the Informant, and do not say your saying aloud to him as you do among yourselves, lest your works collapse without your sensing it.

49:3

Those who hush their voices in the presence of the messenger of God are indeed those whose cores God has examined for guardedness.

They will have forgiveness and an immense reward.

49:4

Those who call out to you from behind the chambers, most of them do not reason.

And had they been patient until you came out to them, it would have been better for them.

And God is Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.

49:6

O you who have believed! If an overstepper brings you a piece of information, distinguish clearly, lest you set upon a people out of ignorance and then become, over what you have done, full of regret.

And know that the messenger of God is among you; were he to defer to you in many matters, you would be overwhelmed.

49:7

But God has made you love faith and embellished it in your cores, and has made you detest the disowning, overstepping, and disobedience.

Those are the ones who have rectitude, by a favor and a blessing from God.

And God is All-Knowing, Wise.

49:9

And if two groups of believers fight each other, reconcile between them.

49:9

If one of the two commits iniquity against the other, fight the one that commits iniquity until it returns to the command of God.

49:9

If it returns, reconcile between them with justice, and be equitable.

49:9

God indeed loves the equitable.

49:10

The believers are but brothers; so reconcile between your two brothers.

49:10

And guard yourselves toward God, perhaps benevolence will be shown to you.

49:11

O you who have believed! Let not a people scoff at a people: it may be that they are better than them; nor let women scoff at women: it may be that they are better than them.

And do not disparage yourselves by insinuation, and do not call each other by nicknames.

49:11

What a wretched attribute is overstepping, after faith!

And whoever does not repent, those are the wrongdoers.

49:12

O you who have believed! Avoid much presumption.

49:12

Some presumption is a transgression.

49:12

And do not spy.

49:12

And let none of you backbite another.

49:12

Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would have an aversion to it.

49:12

And guard yourselves toward God.

God is indeed the Ever-Accepter of repentance, Benevolent.

49:13

O mankind! We created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, so that you may recognize one another.

49:13

The most noble of you, with God, is indeed the most guarded.

God is All-Knowing, Intimately Acquainted.

49:14

The notables said: "We have believed." Say: "You have not believed; rather say: 'We have become true to God alone,' for faith has not yet entered your cores.

And if you defer to God and His messenger, He will not curtail your works in anything.

God is indeed Most-Forgiving, Benevolent."

The believers are only those who have believed in God and His messenger, then have not doubted, and have striven with their goods and their Selves in the way of God.

Those are the veracious.

Say: "Do you inform God of your Law, while God knows what is in the heavens and what is on the earth?

And God is All-Knowing of all things."

49:17

They think they grace you by having become true to God alone.

49:17

Say: "Do not think you grace me with your being true to God alone.

49:17

Rather, it is God who graces you by having guided you to faith, if you are veracious."

49:18

God indeed knows what escapes the senses in the heavens and the earth.

49:18

And God is All-Seeing of what you do.
