Al-Isra

To What Is Most Upright

17:1

In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Glory be to the One who made His obedient one travel by night, from the inviolable place of prostration to the farthest place of prostration, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him some of Our signs.

It is indeed He, the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.

17:2–3

And We gave Moussa the Scripture, and made it a guidance for the Sons of Israel: "Take no one, besides Me, as a trustee" — descendants of those We carried with Nuh.

He was a grateful obedient one.

17:4

And We decreed to the Sons of Israel, in the Scripture: "You will surely sow corruption on the earth twice, and you will surely rise with great haughtiness."

17:5

When the promise of the first of these two came, We raised up against you obedient ones of Ours, possessed of severe rigor, who ranged through the abodes in every direction —

and it was a promise, a thing done.

Then We gave you back the upper hand over them, and reinforced you with goods and sons, and made you more numerous in ranks.

17:7

If you do well, you do well for yourselves,

17:7

and if you do ill, it is against yourselves.

17:7

Then, when the promise of the second time came, it was for them to stamp vexation upon your faces, to enter the place of prostration as they had entered it the first time, and to devastate utterly whatever they had seized.

It may be that your Guardian will show you benevolence;

17:8

but if you repeat it, We will repeat it.

17:8

And We have made Jahannam, for those who disown, an enclosure.

17:9–10

This Recitation indeed guides to what is most upright, and gives the believers who do sound deeds the glad tidings that they will have a great reward, and that those who do not believe in the last life — We have made ready for them a painful punishment.

17:11

And the human being calls for ill as he calls for good,

17:11

for the human being is hasty.

And We have made the night and the day two signs; We blotted out the sign of the night and made the sign of the day fit for seeing clearly, so that you might seek a favor from your Guardian and know the number of years and the reckoning.

And everything, We have set out in detail.

17:13

And to every human being We have fastened his own omen to his neck; and We shall bring forth for him, on the Day of Appearance, a register which he will meet deployed:

17:14

"Read your register: today, it suffices that you be your own reckoner."

17:15

Whoever lets himself be guided lets himself be guided only for himself,

17:15

and whoever strays only strays against himself.

17:15

And no bearer of burden shall bear the burden of another.

17:15

And We never punish until We have raised up a messenger.

17:16

And when We wish to annihilate a city, We address Our commands to its affluent ones, but they overstep within it; so the saying proves true against it, and We destroy it utterly.

17:17

How many generations have We annihilated after Nuh!

And your Guardian suffices as Intimately Acquainted and All-Seeing regarding the offenses of His obedient ones.

17:18

Whoever wants the immediate life, We hasten for him in it what We will, to whom We want; then We assign him Jahannam, where he will burn, reproved, driven away.

17:19

And whoever wants the last life and endeavours for it with the effort it deserves, while being a believer — those are the ones whose effort will be acknowledged.

17:20

To all, We grant —

17:20

to these as to those — from your Guardian's endowment,

17:20

and your Guardian's endowment is never restricted.

See how We have favored some over others;

and the last life is indeed greater in degrees, and greater in favor.

Do not place, alongside God, another deity, or you would find yourself reproved, abandoned.

17:23

And your Guardian has decreed that you obey none but Him,

17:23

and beneficence toward one's two parents.

17:23

If either of them, or both, reach old age with you, do not say to them "fie!" and do not rebuke them,

17:23

but speak to them a noble saying.

17:24

And lower for them the wing of docility, out of benevolence,

17:24

and say: "My Guardian, have benevolence on them as they brought me up when I was small."

Your Guardian knows best what is in your Self.

If you are sound, He is indeed, toward those ever-returning to Him, Most-Forgiving.

17:26

And give to the close relative his due, and to the destitute and the stranded traveler,

17:26

and do not squander wastefully.

17:27

Those who squander are the brothers of the Diverters,

17:27

and the Diverter is, toward his Guardian, a great disowner.

And if you must turn away from them, seeking a benevolence from your Guardian that you hope for, then speak to them an easy saying.

17:29

And do not keep your hand shackled to your neck, nor stretch it out completely, or you would find yourself censured, drained by desolation.

17:30

Your Guardian extends provision to whom He wills, and measures it;

He is indeed, toward His obedient ones, Intimately Acquainted and All-Seeing.

17:31

And do not kill your children for dread of penury:

17:31

it is We who provide for them, as for you.

17:31

Killing them is a great fault.

17:32

And do not approach fornication: it is an indecency, and what an evil way!

17:33

And do not kill the Self that God has made inviolable, except by right.

17:33

And whoever is killed wrongfully, We have appointed for his legal guardian an authority; but let him not be excessive in taking life,

for he will be helped.

And do not approach the goods of the orphan, except in the best way, until he reaches his full maturity,

and be faithful to the pact,

for the pact will be questioned.

And give the measure faithfully when you measure, and weigh with the straight scale:

that is better, and of finer interpretation.

17:36

And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge:

17:36

hearing, sight, and the Conscience — each of them will be questioned.

17:37

And do not walk upon the earth strutting:

17:37

you will never make a hole in the earth, nor reach the mountains in height.

17:38

All that, its evil is, with your Guardian, detestable.

17:39

That is what your Guardian has revealed to you of wisdom.

17:39

And do not place, alongside God, another deity, or you would be cast into Jahannam, censured, driven away.

17:40

Has your Guardian then reserved sons for you, and taken, among the Agents, daughters?

You are surely saying an immense saying.

We have indeed diversified the examples in this Recitation, so that they might remember; but it only increases their recoil.

17:42

Say: "If there were, with Him, deities, as they say, they would then have sought a way to the Holder of the Edifice."

17:43

Glory be to Him, and He is far above what they say, in great exaltation.

17:44

The seven heavens glorify Him, as do the earth and those within it;

17:44

there is nothing that does not glorify Him in praise,

17:44

but you do not understand their glorification.

17:44

He is Forbearing, Most-Forgiving.

17:45

And when you read the Recitation, We place between you and those who do not believe in the last life a hidden veil,

17:46

and We place over their cores coverings, so that they do not understand it, and in their ears a deafness.

17:46

And when you mention your Guardian in the Recitation, Him alone, they turn their backs in recoil.

17:47

We know best what they listen for, when they listen to you, and when they are in secret talk, when the wrongdoers say: "You follow none but a man abused by illusion."

17:48

See how they have multiplied examples about you, and so gone astray:

so they cannot find a way.

17:49

And they said: "When we are bones and crumbled remains, shall we really be raised in a new creation?"

Say: "Be stone, or iron, or any creation that looms great in your chests."

They will then say: "Who will bring us back?"

Say: "He who originated you the first time."

Then they will shake their heads at you and say: "When will that be?"

Say: "It may be that it is near.

The Day He calls you, you will respond in praise of Him, and you will presume you had remained only a little while."

17:53

And tell My obedient ones to say what is best:

17:53

the Diverter sows discord among them;

17:53

the Diverter is indeed, to the human being, a manifest enemy.

Your Guardian knows you best; if He wills, He shows you benevolence, and if He wills, He punishes you.

17:54

We have not sent you to be their trustee.

Your Guardian knows best those who are in the heavens and the earth.

17:55

We have indeed favored some informants above others, and We gave Dawud a Formulary.

Say: "Invoke those you claim besides Him: they possess no power to remove harm from you, nor to shift it."

17:57

Those very ones they invoke seek, toward their Guardian, the means of nearness — whichever of them is nearest — and hope for His benevolence and fear His punishment,

for your Guardian's punishment is one to beware of.

17:58

And there is not a city but We shall annihilate it before the Day of Appearance, or punish it with a severe punishment:

17:58

that is inscribed in the register.

Nothing has kept Us from sending the signs, except that the former peoples denied them.

And We gave the Thamud the she-camel, as clear evidence, but they wronged her.

And We send the signs only to frighten.

And when We told you that your Guardian encompasses mankind —

17:60

We made the vision that We showed you only a trial for mankind, as also the cursed tree in this Recitation.

And We frighten them, but it only increases their great immoderation.

17:61

And when We said to the Agents: "Prostrate before Adam", they prostrated,

17:61

except Iblis: he said: "Shall I prostrate before one You created from clay?"

17:62

He said: "Do You see this one You have honored above me? If You give me respite until the Day of Appearance, I shall surely seize his descendants, except a few."

17:63

He said: "Go! Whoever among them follows you — Jahannam will indeed be your recompense, an abundant recompense.

And shake, by your voice, whomever you can among them; muster against them your cavalry and your infantry; share with them in goods and children; and make them promises —

17:64

but the Diverter promises them only delusion.

17:65

Over My obedient ones, you indeed have no authority;

17:65

and your Guardian suffices as trustee."

Your Guardian is the One who makes the vessel glide for you on the sea, so that you may seek His favor.

He is, toward you, Benevolent.

And when harm touches you at sea, those you invoke stray, except Him.

Then, when He saves you to dry land, you turn away:

17:67

the human being is a great disowner.

17:68–69

Are you then sure We will not cause a part of the dry land to swallow you, or send upon you a storm of stones, leaving you then to find no trustee? Or are you sure We will not bring you back into it another time, to send upon you a shattering wind that drowns you, for your disowning, leaving you then to find no one to pursue Us on your behalf?

17:70

We have indeed honored the sons of Adam, carried them on land and sea, provided them with wholesome things, and markedly favored them above many of those We have created.

17:71

The Day We call every group of men with their reference,

17:71

whoever is given his register in his right hand — those will read their register, and not be wronged a hair's breadth.

And whoever is blind in this life will be blind in the last life, and further astray as to the way.

17:73

And they have indeed nearly turned you away, through trial, from what We revealed to you, so that you might invent against Us something else;

17:73

and then, they would have taken you as an intimate friend.

17:74

And had We not made you firm, you would well nigh have leaned upon them, a little.

17:75

We would then have made you taste the double of life and the double of death; then you would have found, against Us, no help.

And they have indeed nearly shaken you out of this land, to expel you from it —

17:76

and then, they would not have remained after you, except a little.

Such is the norm concerning those We sent before you among Our messengers,

and you will find no shift in Our norm.

17:78

Maintain the Contact from the sun's decline until the darkness of night, and the Recitation of dawn:

17:78

the Recitation of dawn is witnessed.

17:79

And for part of the night, keep vigil with it, as an addition for you: it may be that your Guardian will raise you to a praised station.

17:80

And say: "My Guardian, cause me to enter by an entrance of veracity, and cause me to exit by an exit of veracity, and appoint for me, from Yourself, a supporting authority."

17:81

And say: "The truth has come, and falsehood has vanished:

17:81

falsehood is indeed bound to vanish."

17:82

And We send down, from this Recitation, that which is healing and benevolence for the believers,

but it only increases the wrongdoers in loss.

And when We favor the human being with blessings, he turns away and draws away to his side;

17:83

and when ill touches him, he is hopeless.

17:84

Say: "Each one acts according to his own manner; your Guardian knows best who is best guided as to the way."

17:85

And they ask you about the Influx.

17:85

Say: "The Influx is of my Guardian's command; and you have been given of knowledge only a little."

And if We willed, We would surely take away what We have revealed to you; then you would find, against Us, no trustee for it — except a benevolence from your Guardian.

His favor toward you is great.

17:88

Say: "If humans and the Occulted united to bring the equal of this Recitation, they would not bring its equal, even were they mutual support to one another."

We have indeed diversified for mankind, in this Recitation, every kind of example; but most men refused everything except disowning.

17:90–93

And they said: "We will not give you credit until you make a spring gush forth for us from the earth, or you have a garden of palm trees and vines in which you make rivers gush forth abundantly, or you make the sky tumble upon us in pieces as you claim, or you bring God and the Agents before us, or you have a house of gilding, or you ascend to the sky — and we will not give credit even to your ascent until you bring down upon us a register we can read."

Say: "Glory be to my Guardian! Am I anything but a human, a messenger?"

17:94

And nothing prevented mankind from believing, when guidance came to them, except that they said: "Would God have raised up a human as a messenger?"

Say: "Had there been on earth Agents walking about calmly, We would have sent down to them, from the sky, an Agent, as messenger."

And We shall gather them, on the Day of Appearance, upon their faces, blind, mute, and deaf:

their refuge will be Jahannam:

every time it dies down, We increase for them the inferno.

That is their recompense, for having disowned Our signs and said: "When we are bones and crumbled remains, shall we really be raised in a new creation?"

We have indeed given Moussa nine clear signs:

and I presume you are surely ruined, O Fir'awn."

He then wanted to shake them out of that land; but We drowned him, and all those with him.

And We said after him to the Sons of Israel: "Dwell in this land,
