Al-Anbiya
We Answered Him
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Mankind's reckoning has drawn near, while they are turned away in heedlessness.
No recent reminder comes to them from their Guardian without their listening to it while playing, their core distracted.
And those who did wrong kept their secret talk hidden: "Is this anything but a human like yourselves?
Will you then come to illusion, while you can see clearly?"
Say: "My Guardian knows what is said in the heaven and on the earth,
and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing."
They said instead: "A jumble of confused dreams! He has rather invented it! He is rather a seductive orator!
Let him then bring us a sign, just as the earlier ones were sent with."
No city that We annihilated before them had believed —
will they, then, believe?
And We sent, before you, none but men to whom We revealed: so ask the keepers of the Reminder, if you do not know.
We did not make them bodies that ate no food,
nor were they eternal.
Then We fulfilled the promise for them: We saved them and whoever We willed, and We annihilated the excessive.
We have sent down to you a Writ in which is your remembrance —
will you not then reason?
How many a city, doing wrong, have We shattered, bringing into being after it another people!
Then, when they perceived Our rigor, at once they ran off from it.
"Do not run off — return to the affluence you were given and to your dwellings, perhaps you will be questioned!"
They said: "Woe to us — we have indeed been wrongdoers!"
That cry did not cease until We made them a mown harvest, extinguished.
We did not create the heaven and the earth, and what is between them, in play.
Had We wished to take on a distraction, We would have taken it from within Ourself,
had We been ones to do so.
We hurl truth against falsehood instead, so it crushes it, and at once it vanishes.
And woe to you for what you describe!
And to Him belongs whoever is in the heavens and the earth.
Those who are with Him do not grow too proud to obey Him, nor do they grow breathless;
they glorify Him night and day, never flagging.
Or have they taken deities from the earth that themselves bring about the Deployment?
Had there been in the heavens and the earth deities other than God, both would have become corrupt.
So glory be to God, Guardian of the Edifice, above what they describe!
He is not questioned about what He does,
while they will be questioned.
Or have they taken deities besides Him?
Say: "Bring your demonstration.
This is the remembrance of those with me, and the remembrance of those before me."
But most of them do not know the truth, so they turn away.
We did not send any messenger before you without revealing to him that there is no deity but Me — so obey Me.
And they have said: "The All-Benevolent has taken a child."
Glory be to Him!
They are rather honored obedient ones,
who do not precede Him in saying, and who act by His command.
He knows what is before them and what is behind them,
and they intercede only for whom He approves, while they, dreading Him, are apprehensive.
Whoever among them were to say, "I am a deity besides Him" — that one We would recompense with Jahannam:
thus do We recompense the wrongdoers.
Have those who disowned not seen that the heavens and the earth were a joined mass, and We split them apart?
And We made every living thing from water —
will they not, then, believe?
And We placed firm anchors on the earth, lest it sway with them,
and We made in it passes and ways, perhaps they will guide themselves.
And We made the heaven a preserved roof,
while they turn away from its signs.
It is He who created the night and the day, the sun and the moon —
each swims in an orbit.
We did not grant eternity to any human before you —
so if you were to die, would they be eternal?
Every Self will taste death,
and We test you with ill and with good, as a trial;
and to Us you will be returned.
And when those who disowned see you, they take you as nothing but an object of mockery:
"Is this the one who mentions your deities?" — while they themselves disown the remembrance of the All-Benevolent.
The human being was created out of haste.
I will show you My signs, so do not ask Me to hasten them.
And they say: "When will this promise be, if you are veracious?"
If only those who disowned knew — the moment when they will not be able to keep the Fire off their faces or their backs, and will not be helped...
It will come to them instead, unexpectedly, and stun them, so that they will not be able to turn it back, nor will they be granted any respite.
Messengers before you were indeed mocked; then what they used to mock enveloped those among them who scoffed.
Say: "Who watches over you, by night and by day, from the All-Benevolent?"
Rather, they turn away from the remembrance of their Guardian.
Or do they have deities that shield them from Us?
They cannot help themselves, nor are they granted any aid from Us.
We rather gave enjoyment to these and to their ancestors, until life grew long for them.
Do they not see that We come to the earth, diminishing it from its extremities?
Are they, then, the victors?
Say: "I only warn you by the revelation" —
but the deaf do not hear the call when they are warned.
And if a whiff of your Guardian's punishment were to touch them, they would surely say: "Woe to us — we have indeed been wrongdoers!"
And We shall set up the balances of equity for the Day of Appearance, so that no Self will be wronged in the least;
and even if it be the weight of a mustard seed, We shall bring it forth — and We suffice as reckoners.
We certainly gave Moussa and Harun the Discernment, a brightness, and a remembrance for those who guard themselves, who dread their Guardian even though He escapes their senses, and are apprehensive of the Hour.
And this is a blessed remembrance that We have sent down —
will you, then, disavow it?
We certainly gave Ibrahim his rectitude before, and We knew him well.
When he said to his father and his people: "What are these statues before which you remain posted?"
They said: "We found our ancestors obeying them."
He said: "You and your ancestors were indeed in manifest error."
They said: "Have you come to us with the truth, or are you one of those who play?"
He said: "Your Guardian is rather the Guardian of the heavens and the earth, who originated them,
and of that, I am among the witnesses."
And by God, I will surely devise something against your idols after you have turned your backs and gone.
So he made them into debris, except a great one of theirs, perhaps they would return to it.
They said: "Who has done this to our deities? He is surely one of the wrongdoers!"
They said: "We heard a young man mention them; he is called Ibrahim."
They said: "Bring him, then, before the eyes of men, perhaps they will witness."
They said: "Is it you who did this to our deities, Ibrahim?"
He said: "It was rather this, their great one, who did it — ask them, if they can utter anything."
So they returned to themselves and said: "It is you, indeed, who are the wrongdoers."
Then they were turned back upon their heads:
"You know well that these utter nothing!"
He said: "Do you, then, obey besides God what neither benefits nor harms you in anything?
Fie upon you, and upon what you obey besides God!
Will you not then reason?"
They said: "Burn him, and help your deities, if you must act!"
We said: "O fire, be coolness and peace upon Ibrahim."
And they intended a scheme against him, but We made them the greatest losers.
And We saved him, and Lut, to the land that We blessed for all beings.
And We bestowed on him Ishaq,
and Yaacoub, as an addition.
And all of them We made sound.
And We made them leaders who guide by Our command,
and We revealed to them to do good deeds, to maintain the Contact, and to give pure liberality;
and to Us they were obedient ones.
And to Lut We gave judgment and knowledge,
and We saved him from the city that used to commit vile practices —
they were an evil people, oversteppers.
And We admitted him into Our benevolence,
for he was among those who are sound.
And Nuh, when he called out earlier: We answered him, and saved him and his family from the immense distress.
And We helped him against the people who denied Our signs;
they were an evil people, so We drowned them all together.
And Dawud and Sulayman, when they judged concerning the tilth into which the people's sheep had trespassed by night,
and We were witnesses to their judgment.
We granted Sulayman the understanding of it,
and to each of them We gave judgment and knowledge.
And We subjected the mountains to glorify with Dawud, and the birds as well;
and it was We who did it.
And We taught him the making of coats of mail for you, so that it might protect you from your own violence —
will you, then, be grateful?
And to Sulayman, the raging wind, running by his command to the land that We blessed,
and We had knowledge of all things.
And among the Diverters were some who dived for him and performed other tasks besides that;
and We were their preserver.
And Ayyub, when he called out to his Guardian: "Harm has touched me, and You are the most benevolent of the benevolent!"
So We answered him and removed the harm that was upon him,
and We restored his family to him, and as many again with them, as a benevolence from Us, and a remembrance for the obedient ones.
And Isma'il, and Idris, and Dhul-Kifl:
each was among the patient.
And We admitted them into Our benevolence,
for they were among those who are sound.
And Dhu'n-Nun, when he went off in anger and presumed that We would have no power over him: he called out in the darknesses: "There is no deity but You! Glory be to You! I have indeed been among the wrongdoers!"
So We answered him and saved him from anguish;
and thus do We save the believers.
And Zakariya, when he called out to his Guardian: "My Guardian, do not forsake me, alone, though You are the best of inheritors!"
So We answered him, and bestowed on him Yahya, and made his wife sound for him;
they used to speed toward good deeds, and call upon Us in yearning and in reverence, and were humble before Us.
And Maryam, who protected her intimacy: We breathed into her of Our Influx, and made her and her son a sign for all beings.
This community of yours is indeed a single community, and I am your Guardian — obey Me, then.
But they split their affair among themselves;
all will return to Us.
So whoever does sound deeds, being a believer, his effort will never be disowned —
and We are indeed recording it for him.
And it is prohibited, for a city that We have annihilated, that they should not return —
until Yajuj and Majuj are opened, and they come swarming down from every height, and the true promise draws near — then at once the sights of those who disowned are fixed: "Woe to us! We were heedless of this — we have rather been wrongdoers!"
You, and what you obey besides God, are indeed the fuel of Jahannam — you will arrive at it.
Had these been deities, they would not have arrived at it;
and all will abide in it eternally.
In it they will have rattling, and in it they will hear nothing.
As for those to whom We have already granted the best part, those will indeed be kept far from it:
they will not hear its faintest sound, and they will abide eternally in what their Self desires.
The greatest fright will not grieve them,
and the Agents will receive them: "This is your day, the one you were promised."
The day We fold up the heaven as a binder closes over the writings it holds,
just as We began the first creation, We shall remake it —
a promise incumbent upon Us:
We shall indeed do it.
We have certainly written in the Formulary, after the Remembrance, that the earth will be inherited by My sound obedient ones.
In this there is surely a transmission for a people of obedient ones.
And We did not send you except as a benevolence for all beings.
Say: "It is only revealed to me that your deity is a single deity —
will you, then, be true to Him alone?"
If they turn their backs, then say: "I have informed you all equally,
and I have no idea whether what you are promised is near or far.
He indeed knows what is said aloud, and He knows what you withhold.
And I have no idea: perhaps it is a trial for you, and an enjoyment for a time."
Say: "My Guardian, judge with truth;
and our Guardian is the All-Benevolent, whose help is sought against what you describe."
