Az-Zumar

Do Not Lose Heart

39:1

In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. The descent of the Scripture comes from God, the All-Powerful, the Wise.

39:2

We have sent down to you the Scripture in truth; so obey God, devoting the Law exclusively to Him.

39:3

Is it not so: to God belongs the refined and exclusive Law.

39:3

And those who take allies besides Him: "We only obey them so that they may bring us nearer to God, as near as can be";

God will indeed judge between them concerning that in which they differ.

39:3

God does not guide one who is a liar, a great disowner.

Had God wanted to take a child, He would have chosen what He wills from what He creates;

glory be to Him —

He is God, the One, the Subjugator.

He created the heavens and the earth in truth;

39:5

He wraps the night around the day, and wraps the day around the night;

and He has subjected the sun and the moon,

each running to an appointed term.

Is it not so: He is the All-Powerful, the Great Forgiver.

39:6

He created you from a single Self, then brought forth from it its spouse;

and He sent down for you, among the cattle, eight, in pairs;

He creates you in the bellies of your mothers, creation after creation, in three darknesses;

39:6

that is God, your Guardian; to Him belongs the dominion;

there is no deity but Him;

how then are you turned away?

39:7

If you disown, God is indeed Self-Sufficient, independent of you;

39:7

and He does not approve of disowning for His obedient ones;

but if you are grateful, He approves it for you.

And no bearer of burden shall bear the burden of another;

then to your Guardian is your return, and He will inform you of what you used to do.

39:7

He is All-Knowing of what the chests contain.

39:8

And when harm touches the human being, he calls upon his Guardian, having recourse to Him;

39:8

then, when He vouchsafes him a blessing from Himself, he forgets what he used to call upon before, and assigns equals to God, to lead astray from His way.

39:8

Say: "Enjoy your disowning a little; you are indeed among the companions of the Fire."

39:9

He who is devoted through the hours of the night, prostrating and standing, wary of the last life and hoping for the benevolence of his Guardian —

say: "Are those who know equal to those who do not know?"

Only the possessors of intelligence remember.

Say: "O My obedient ones who believe, guard yourselves toward your Guardian;

for those who do good, in the present life, there is beauty;

and God's earth is vast;

only the patient will be faithfully repaid their reward, without count."

39:11–12

Say: "I have been commanded to obey God, devoting the Law exclusively to Him, and I have been commanded to be the first of those true to Him alone."

Say: "I indeed fear, if I disobey my Guardian, the punishment of an immense day."

39:14

Say: "It is God I obey, devoting my Law exclusively to Him;

39:15

so obey whatever you will besides Him."

39:15

Say: "The losers are those who will have caused the loss of their Selves and of their families on the Day of Appearance;

is it not so: that is the manifest loss."

39:16

They will have, above them, canopies of Fire, and beneath them, likewise;

it is by this that God frightens His obedient ones:

"O My obedient ones, guard yourselves toward Me!"

39:17

And those who avoid obeying the Overreacher, and have recourse to God, to them the good tidings.

39:18

So give good news to My obedient ones who listen to the saying and follow the best of it;

those are the ones God has guided,

and those are the possessors of intelligence.

He against whom the word of punishment has proven true — will you save him who is in the Fire?

39:20

But those who guarded themselves before their Guardian will have high chambers, above which other chambers are built, beneath which rivers flow;

a promise of God —

God does not fail His promise.

Have you not seen that God sends down water from the sky, and channels it as springs in the earth, then brings forth with it crops of varying colors; then they wither, and you see them yellowed; then He turns them to debris?

There is surely in that a reminder for the possessors of intelligence.

39:22

He whose chest God has opened to being true to God alone, so that he is upon a light from his Guardian —

39:22

so woe to those whose cores are hardened against the remembrance of God!

Those are in manifest error.

39:23

God has sent down the most beautiful of discourse, a Scripture whose parts resemble one another, in couplets,

39:23

at which the skins of those who dread their Guardian shiver; then their skins and their cores soften toward the remembrance of God;

that is the guidance of God, by which He guides whom He wills;

and whoever God sends astray has no guide.

39:24

He who shields himself with his face from the worst punishment on the Day of Appearance —

and it will be said to the wrongdoers: "Taste what you used to earn."

Those before them denied, and the punishment came to them from where they did not sense;

God made them taste disgrace in the present life,

and the punishment of the last life is greater, if only they knew.

39:27–28

And We have certainly multiplied for men, in this Recitation, every kind of example, perhaps they will remember — a flawless Recitation, without any crookedness, perhaps they will guard themselves.

39:29

God multiplies an example: a man belonging to partners in disagreement, and a man belonging wholly to one man —

39:29

are they equal in example?

39:29

Praise be to God!

But most of them do not know.

39:30–31

You will die, and they will die; then, on the Day of Appearance, you will indeed quarrel before your Guardian.

Who then does more wrong than one who lies about God and denies veracity when it has come to him?

39:32

Is there not, in Jahannam, a sojourn for those who disown?

And he who came with veracity, and declared it true, those are the ones who guard themselves.

They will have whatever they will, with their Guardian;

39:35

such is the recompense of those who do good, so that God may cover for them the worst of what they did, and recompense them with their reward, according to the best of what they used to do.

39:36

Is God not sufficient for His obedient one?

39:36

And they seek to frighten you with those besides Him;

and whoever God sends astray has no guide.

And whoever God guides has no one to lead him astray;

39:37

is God not All-Powerful, possessor of vengeance?

And if you ask them who created the heavens and the earth, they will surely say: "God";

say: "Have you considered, then, what you invoke besides God? If God wanted harm for me, could they remove His harm? Or if He wanted benevolence for me, could they hold back His benevolence?"

39:38

Say: "God suffices me;

39:38

it is to Him that those who entrust themselves entrust themselves."

Say: "O my people, act according to your position; I too am acting;

you will soon know to whom a punishment will come that disgraces him, and upon whom a lasting punishment will fall."

39:41

We have sent down to you the Scripture for mankind, in truth;

whoever lets himself be guided, it is for himself;

God keeps faithfully the Selves at the time of their death, and those that have not died, during their sleep;

39:42

He retains those for whom He has decreed death, and sends back the others until an appointed term;

there are surely in that signs for a people who reflect.

Or have they taken intercessors besides God?

Say: "Even though they have no power over anything and do not reason?"

Say: "Intercession belongs entirely to God;

then to Him you will be returned."

39:45

And when God alone is remembered, the cores of those who do not believe in the last life shrink with revulsion;

but when those besides Him are remembered, at once they exult.

39:46

Say: "O God, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of what escapes the senses and of what is witnessed, You alone will judge between Your obedient ones concerning that in which they used to differ."

39:47

And if those who did wrong possessed all that is on earth, and its equivalent with it, they would offer it as ransom from the worst punishment on the Day of Appearance;

and there will appear to them, from God, what they had not accounted for.

And the evil consequences of what they earned will appear to them,

and what they used to mock will envelop them.

39:49

When harm touches the human being, he calls upon Us; then, when We vouchsafe him a blessing from Us, he says: "It has only been given to me on account of a knowledge."

39:49

Rather, it is a trial,

Those before them already said it, and what they used to earn availed them nothing.

The evil consequences of what they earned struck them;

and those among these who do wrong will be struck by the evil consequences of what they earned, and they will not be able to render Him powerless.

Do they not know that God extends provision to whom He wills, and measures it?

There are surely in that signs for a people who believe.

39:53

Say: "O My obedient ones who have been excessive against yourselves, do not lose heart regarding the benevolence of God;

39:53

God forgives all offenses;

39:53

it is indeed He, the Most-Forgiving, the Benevolent."

39:54

And have recourse to your Guardian, and be true to Him alone, before the punishment comes to you; then you will not be helped.

39:55–58

And follow the best of what has been sent down to you from your Guardian, before the punishment comes to you unexpectedly, without your sensing it — lest a Self should say: "What desolation, for what I neglected on the side of God, and for having been among the scoffers!" or should say: "Had God guided me, I would have been among those who guard themselves"; or should say, upon seeing the punishment: "If only I had a return, I would be among those who do good."

"Yes! My signs came to you, but you denied them, grew proud, and were among those who disown."

39:60

And on the Day of Appearance, you will see those who lied about God, their faces blackened.

Is there not, in Jahannam, a sojourn for the proud?

And God saves those who guarded themselves, by their triumph; no harm will touch them, and they will not grieve.

God is the Creator of all things;

39:62

and He is, over all things, a trustee.

To Him belong the charges of the heavens and the earth;

39:63

and those who disown the signs of God, those are the losers.

Say: "Do you then command me to obey other than God, O ignorant ones?"

It has certainly been revealed to you, and to those before you: "If you associate, your work will surely collapse, and you will surely be among the losers."

Rather, obey God, and be among the grateful.

39:67

They did not measure God with His true measure; the whole earth will be in His grasp on the Day of Appearance, and the heavens will be folded in His right hand.

Glory be to Him, and He is far above what they associate with Him.

And the Horn will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will be thunderstruck, except whom God wills;

then it will be blown a second time, and at once they will stand up, looking on.

39:69

And the earth will shine with the light of its Guardian; the record will be set down; the informants and the witnesses will be brought forward; it will be decided between them in truth, and they will not be wronged.

And every Self will be faithfully repaid for what it did, and He knows best what they do.

39:71

And those who disown will be driven toward Jahannam, in troops,

They will say: "Yes!" but the word of punishment will have proven true against those who disowned.

It will be said: "Enter the gates of Jahannam, to abide therein eternally."

How wretched is the sojourn of the proud!

39:73

And those who guarded themselves before their Guardian will be driven toward the Garden, in troops,

until, when they reach it, its gates being open, its custodians will say to them: "Peace be upon you, you have been wholesome — enter it, to abide therein eternally."

39:74

And they will say: "Praise be to God, who has kept His promise to us, and made us inherit the earth, settling in the Garden wherever we will; how excellent is the reward of those who work!"

39:75

And you will see the Agents surrounding the Edifice, glorifying their Guardian with praise;

39:75

and it will be decided between them in truth,

39:75

and it will be said: "Praise be to God, Guardian of all beings."
