Al-Waqi'a

When the Event occurs, none will be able to deny its coming.

إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلْوَاقِعَةُ لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ

Abasing, elevating — when the earth is rocked with a violent rocking, and the mountains are crushed to powder, becoming scattered dust, and you become three categories.

خَافِضَةٌۭ رَّافِعَةٌ إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ رَجًّۭا وَبُسَّتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ بَسًّۭا فَكَانَتْ هَبَآءًۭ مُّنۢبَثًّۭا وَكُنتُمْ أَزْوَٰجًۭا ثَلَٰثَةًۭ

The companions of the right side — what are the companions of the right side?

فَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ

And the companions of the left side — what are the companions of the left side?

وَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ

And the forerunners, the forerunners...

وَٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ

Those are the ones brought near, in the gardens of bliss.

أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ فِى جَنَّٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ

A multitude from the first and few from the last, on woven couches, reclining on them, face to face.

ثُلَّةٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ وَقَلِيلٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْءَاخِرِينَ عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍۢ مَّوْضُونَةٍۢ مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَٰبِلِينَ

Around them will circulate children made eternal, with goblets, ewers, and a cup of spring water — from which they will neither ache nor be intoxicated — and savoury fruit they opt for, and the flesh of birds that they desire.

يَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَٰنٌۭ مُّخَلَّدُونَ بِأَكْوَابٍۢ وَأَبَارِيقَ وَكَأْسٍۢ مِّن مَّعِينٍۢ لَّا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا وَلَا يُنزِفُونَ وَفَٰكِهَةٍۢ مِّمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ وَلَحْمِ طَيْرٍۢ مِّمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ

And companions of listening and support, like well-sheltered pearls, in recompense for what they used to do.

وَحُورٌ عِينٌۭ كَأَمْثَٰلِ ٱللُّؤْلُؤِ ٱلْمَكْنُونِ جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ

They will hear therein no idle talk and no incitement to transgression.

لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًۭا وَلَا تَأْثِيمًا

Only the saying: "Peace, peace."

إِلَّا قِيلًۭا سَلَٰمًۭا سَلَٰمًۭا

And the companions of the right — what are the companions of the right?

وَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ

Among thornless lote trees, and clustered banana trees, extended shade, flowing water, abundant savoury fruit neither cut off nor withheld, and elevated couches.

فِى سِدْرٍۢ مَّخْضُودٍۢ وَطَلْحٍۢ مَّنضُودٍۢ وَظِلٍّۢ مَّمْدُودٍۢ وَمَآءٍۢ مَّسْكُوبٍۢ وَفَٰكِهَةٍۢ كَثِيرَةٍۢ لَّا مَقْطُوعَةٍۢ وَلَا مَمْنُوعَةٍۢ وَفُرُشٍۢ مَّرْفُوعَةٍ

We brought them into being in a coming-into-being, and made them inaugural beings, loving, fertile and of shared stock, for the companions of the right.

إِنَّآ أَنشَأْنَٰهُنَّ إِنشَآءًۭ فَجَعَلْنَٰهُنَّ أَبْكَارًا عُرُبًا أَتْرَابًۭا لِّأَصْحَٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ

A multitude from the first and a multitude from the last.

ثُلَّةٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ وَثُلَّةٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْءَاخِرِينَ

And the companions of the left — what are the companions of the left?

وَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ

In torrid wind, and boiling water, and a shade of black smoke — neither cool nor generous.

فِى سَمُومٍۢ وَحَمِيمٍۢ وَظِلٍّۢ مِّن يَحْمُومٍۢ لَّا بَارِدٍۢ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ

They were before that among the affluent.

إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ

And they used to persist in the immense perjury.

وَكَانُوا۟ يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى ٱلْحِنثِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

And they used to say: "When we are dead, earth and bones, shall we really be raised? And our earliest forefathers too?"

وَكَانُوا۟ يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًۭا وَعِظَٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ

Say: "The first and the last will surely be brought together at the appointed time of a known day."

قُلْ إِنَّ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ وَٱلْءَاخِرِينَ لَمَجْمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِيقَٰتِ يَوْمٍۢ مَّعْلُومٍۢ

Then surely you, O astray, denying ones, will eat from the tree of Zaqqoum, and fill your bellies with it, and drink on top of it boiling water, drinking as thirsty camels drink.

ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبُونَ لَءَاكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرٍۢ مِّن زَقُّومٍۢ فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنْهَا ٱلْبُطُونَ فَشَٰرِبُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ ٱلْحَمِيمِ فَشَٰرِبُونَ شُرْبَ ٱلْهِيمِ

This is their welcome on the Day of the Due.

هَٰذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلدِّينِ

So why do you not declare it true?

فَلَوْلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ

Do you then see that which you emit? Is it you who create it, or are We the Creator?

أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تُمْنُونَ ءَأَنتُمْ تَخْلُقُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْخَٰلِقُونَ

It is We who have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outrun in replacing you with your likenesses and bringing you into being in that which you do not know.

نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَيْنَكُمُ ٱلْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمْثَٰلَكُمْ وَنُنشِئَكُمْ فِى مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ

So why do you not remember?

فَلَوْلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ

Do you then see that which you till? Is it you who sow it, or are We the Sower?

أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تَحْرُثُونَ ءَأَنتُمْ تَزْرَعُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلزَّٰرِعُونَ

If We willed, We could make it debris, and you would stay lamenting: "We are surely ruined! Rather, we are deprived."

لَوْ نَشَآءُ لَجَعَلْنَٰهُ حُطَٰمًۭا فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُونَ إِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُونَ بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ

Do you then see the water that you drink? Is it you who sent it down from the clouds, or are We the Sender?

أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلْمَآءَ ٱلَّذِى تَشْرَبُونَ ءَأَنتُمْ أَنزَلْتُمُوهُ مِنَ ٱلْمُزْنِ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنزِلُونَ

So why are you not grateful?

فَلَوْلَا تَشْكُرُونَ

Do you then see the fire that you kindle? Is it you who brought its tree into being, or are We the One who brings it into being?

أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِى تُورُونَ ءَأَنتُمْ أَنشَأْتُمْ شَجَرَتَهَآ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنشِـُٔونَ

We made it a reminder and a use for those who halt in the wilderness.

نَحْنُ جَعَلْنَٰهَا تَذْكِرَةًۭ وَمَتَٰعًۭا لِّلْمُقْوِينَ

So glorify in the name of your Guardian, the Immense.

فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

No! I swear by the positions of the stars — and surely, it is an immense swearing, if you but knew — surely, it is a noble Recitation, in a well-sheltered scripture, which none touch except the purified.

فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَٰقِعِ ٱلنُّجُومِ وَإِنَّهُۥ لَقَسَمٌۭ لَّوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرْءَانٌۭ كَرِيمٌۭ فِى كِتَٰبٍۢ مَّكْنُونٍۢ لَّا يَمَسُّهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلْمُطَهَّرُونَ

A descent from the Guardian of all beings.

تَنزِيلٌۭ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ

Is it this discourse that you treat with complaisance, and do you make your provision consist in denying?

أَفَبِهَٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ أَنتُم مُّدْهِنُونَ وَتَجْعَلُونَ رِزْقَكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ تُكَذِّبُونَ

Then why, when it reaches the throat, and you at that moment are looking on, and We are nearer to him than you, but you do not see clearly — then why, if you were not indebted, do you not make it return, if you are veracious?

فَلَوْلَآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلْحُلْقُومَ وَأَنتُمْ حِينَئِذٍۢ تَنظُرُونَ وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنكُمْ وَلَٰكِن لَّا تُبْصِرُونَ فَلَوْلَآ إِن كُنتُمْ غَيْرَ مَدِينِينَ تَرْجِعُونَهَآ إِن كُنتُمْ صَٰدِقِينَ

As for the one who is among those brought near: rest, and fragrance, and a garden of bliss.

فَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ فَرَوْحٌۭ وَرَيْحَانٌۭ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِيمٍۢ

And as for the one who is among the companions of the right: "Peace to you," from the companions of the right.

وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ فَسَلَٰمٌۭ لَّكَ مِنْ أَصْحَٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ

And as for the one who is among the denying, astray ones: a welcome of boiling water, and a burning in the Blaze.

وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ فَنُزُلٌۭ مِّنْ حَمِيمٍۢ وَتَصْلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ

So glorify in the name of your Guardian, the Immense.

فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
