Al-Mujadala

God has certainly heard the saying of the one who argues with you about her husband and complains to God; and God hears your exchange.

قَدْ سَمِعَ ٱللَّهُ قَوْلَ ٱلَّتِى تُجَٰدِلُكَ فِى زَوْجِهَا وَتَشْتَكِىٓ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَٱللَّهُ يَسْمَعُ تَحَاوُرَكُمَآ

Those among you who pronounce the exclusion formula against their women — they are not their mothers.

ٱلَّذِينَ يُظَٰهِرُونَ مِنكُم مِّن نِّسَآئِهِم مَّا هُنَّ أُمَّهَٰتِهِمْ

Their mothers are none but those who bore them.

إِنْ أُمَّهَٰتُهُمْ إِلَّا ٱلَّٰٓـِٔى وَلَدْنَهُمْ

And they are surely saying a disavowed saying and a falsification.

وَإِنَّهُمْ لَيَقُولُونَ مُنكَرًۭا مِّنَ ٱلْقَوْلِ وَزُورًۭا

And those who pronounce the exclusion formula against their women, then return to what they said, shall restore the independence of a person bound by a debt before they touch each other again.

وَٱلَّذِينَ يُظَٰهِرُونَ مِن نِّسَآئِهِمْ ثُمَّ يَعُودُونَ لِمَا قَالُوا۟ فَتَحْرِيرُ رَقَبَةٍۢ مِّن قَبْلِ أَن يَتَمَآسَّا

This is what you are exhorted by.

ذَٰلِكُمْ تُوعَظُونَ بِهِۦ

Whoever finds no means shall abstain two consecutive months before they touch each other again.

فَمَن لَّمْ يَجِدْ فَصِيَامُ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ مِن قَبْلِ أَن يَتَمَآسَّا

Whoever cannot shall feed sixty destitute people.

فَمَن لَّمْ يَسْتَطِعْ فَإِطْعَامُ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًۭا

This, so that you may believe in God and His messenger.

ذَٰلِكَ لِتُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ

And those are the limits of God.

وَتِلْكَ حُدُودُ ٱللَّهِ

Those who set themselves against God and His messenger will indeed be brought low, as were those before them.

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يُحَآدُّونَ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ كُبِتُوا۟ كَمَا كُبِتَ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ

Yet We have sent down clear signs.

وَقَدْ أَنزَلْنَآ ءَايَٰتٍۭ بَيِّنَٰتٍۢ

The day God raises them all and informs them of what they did.

يَوْمَ يَبْعَثُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ جَمِيعًۭا فَيُنَبِّئُهُم بِمَا عَمِلُوٓا۟

God has enumerated it, while they have forgotten it.

أَحْصَىٰهُ ٱللَّهُ وَنَسُوهُ

Have you not seen that God knows what is in the heavens and what is on the earth?

أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَعْلَمُ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ

There is no secret talk among three but He is their fourth, nor among five but He is their sixth, nor fewer nor more than that but He is with them wherever they are.

مَا يَكُونُ مِن نَّجْوَىٰ ثَلَٰثَةٍ إِلَّا هُوَ رَابِعُهُمْ وَلَا خَمْسَةٍ إِلَّا هُوَ سَادِسُهُمْ وَلَآ أَدْنَىٰ مِن ذَٰلِكَ وَلَآ أَكْثَرَ إِلَّا هُوَ مَعَهُمْ أَيْنَ مَا كَانُوا۟

Then He will inform them of what they did, on the Day of Appearance.

ثُمَّ يُنَبِّئُهُم بِمَا عَمِلُوا۟ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ

Have you not seen those who were forbidden secret talk, then go back to what they were forbidden, and hold secret talk in transgression, hostility, and disobedience to the messenger?

أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِينَ نُهُوا۟ عَنِ ٱلنَّجْوَىٰ ثُمَّ يَعُودُونَ لِمَا نُهُوا۟ عَنْهُ وَيَتَنَٰجَوْنَ بِٱلْإِثْمِ وَٱلْعُدْوَٰنِ وَمَعْصِيَتِ ٱلرَّسُولِ

And when they come to you, they greet you with a greeting God never greeted you with, and say within themselves: "Why does God not punish us for what we say?"

وَإِذَا جَآءُوكَ حَيَّوْكَ بِمَا لَمْ يُحَيِّكَ بِهِ ٱللَّهُ وَيَقُولُونَ فِىٓ أَنفُسِهِمْ لَوْلَا يُعَذِّبُنَا ٱللَّهُ بِمَا نَقُولُ

Jahannam suffices them.

حَسْبُهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ

They will burn in it.

يَصْلَوْنَهَا

O you who have believed! When you hold secret talk, do not hold it in transgression, hostility, and disobedience to the messenger.

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِذَا تَنَٰجَيْتُمْ فَلَا تَتَنَٰجَوْا۟ بِٱلْإِثْمِ وَٱلْعُدْوَٰنِ وَمَعْصِيَتِ ٱلرَّسُولِ

But hold secret talk in virtue and guardedness.

وَتَنَٰجَوْا۟ بِٱلْبِرِّ وَٱلتَّقْوَىٰ

Secret talk comes only from the Diverter, to grieve those who believe; but it cannot harm them in the least, except by God's leave.

إِنَّمَا ٱلنَّجْوَىٰ مِنَ ٱلشَّيْطَٰنِ لِيَحْزُنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَلَيْسَ بِضَآرِّهِمْ شَيْـًٔا إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ

O you who have believed! When you are told to make room in assemblies, make room; God will make room for you.

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِذَا قِيلَ لَكُمْ تَفَسَّحُوا۟ فِى ٱلْمَجَٰلِسِ فَٱفْسَحُوا۟ يَفْسَحِ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمْ

And when you are told to rise up, rise up; God will elevate in degrees those among you who believe and those given knowledge.

وَإِذَا قِيلَ ٱنشُزُوا۟ فَٱنشُزُوا۟ يَرْفَعِ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مِنكُمْ وَٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْعِلْمَ دَرَجَٰتٍۢ

O you who have believed! When you hold secret talk with the messenger, advance charity before your secret talk.

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِذَا نَٰجَيْتُمُ ٱلرَّسُولَ فَقَدِّمُوا۟ بَيْنَ يَدَىْ نَجْوَىٰكُمْ صَدَقَةًۭ

That is better for you, and cleaner.

ذَٰلِكَ خَيْرٌۭ لَّكُمْ وَأَطْهَرُ

Were you apprehensive about advancing acts of charity before your secret talks?

ءَأَشْفَقْتُمْ أَن تُقَدِّمُوا۟ بَيْنَ يَدَىْ نَجْوَىٰكُمْ صَدَقَٰتٍۢ

Since you did not do it, and God has turned toward you with clemency, maintain the Contact and give pure liberality.

فَإِذْ لَمْ تَفْعَلُوا۟ وَتَابَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَأَقِيمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتُوا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ

And defer to God and His messenger.

وَأَطِيعُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ

God has prepared for them a severe punishment.

أَعَدَّ ٱللَّهُ لَهُمْ عَذَابًۭا شَدِيدًا

Neither their goods nor their children will avail them at all against God.

لَّن تُغْنِىَ عَنْهُمْ أَمْوَٰلُهُمْ وَلَآ أَوْلَٰدُهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ شَيْـًٔا

The day God raises them all, they will take oaths to Him as they take oaths to you, thinking they stand on something.

يَوْمَ يَبْعَثُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ جَمِيعًۭا فَيَحْلِفُونَ لَهُۥ كَمَا يَحْلِفُونَ لَكُمْ وَيَحْسَبُونَ أَنَّهُمْ عَلَىٰ شَىْءٍ

The Diverter has taken hold of them and made them forget the remembrance of God.

ٱسْتَحْوَذَ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلشَّيْطَٰنُ فَأَنسَىٰهُمْ ذِكْرَ ٱللَّهِ

Those are the party of the Diverter.

أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ حِزْبُ ٱلشَّيْطَٰنِ

God has written: "I shall surely overcome, I and My messengers."

كَتَبَ ٱللَّهُ لَأَغْلِبَنَّ أَنَا۠ وَرُسُلِىٓ

You will not find a people who believe in God and the Last Day loving those who set themselves against God and His messenger, even if they be their fathers, their sons, their brothers, or their kinsmen.

لَّا تَجِدُ قَوْمًۭا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْءَاخِرِ يُوَآدُّونَ مَنْ حَآدَّ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ وَلَوْ كَانُوٓا۟ ءَابَآءَهُمْ أَوْ أَبْنَآءَهُمْ أَوْ إِخْوَٰنَهُمْ أَوْ عَشِيرَتَهُمْ

These are the ones in whose cores He has inscribed faith, and whom He has fortified with an Influx from Him, and whom He will admit into gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding there eternally.

أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ كَتَبَ فِى قُلُوبِهِمُ ٱلْإِيمَٰنَ وَأَيَّدَهُم بِرُوحٍۢ مِّنْهُ وَيُدْخِلُهُمْ جَنَّٰتٍۢ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَٰرُ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا

God is satisfied with them, and they are satisfied with Him.

رَضِىَ ٱللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ وَرَضُوا۟ عَنْهُ

Those are the party of God.

أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ حِزْبُ ٱللَّهِ
